2021_November_Edition_3
A special extra November edition of the programme and an opportunity to hear the superb 3/12 Wurlitzer in the Victoria Hall at Saltaire near Shipley in West Yorkshire. Many people will know that the organ originally started life in the Gaumont Cinema in Oldham but after its removal from there in 1961 has has three additional homes across the pennines before its installation at Saltaire 22 years ago. We were lucky be able to record a concert on Remembrance Sunday presented by the COS Northern Society starring NICHOLAS MARTIN B.E.M. at the console but on this occasion our microphones were sited in the balcony to capture the nuances of what is regarded to be one the areas finest theatre organs.   If you would like to hear the ex Oldham Wurlitzer live - organist Michael Wooldridge will be entraining next month with no doubt some seasonal favourites on Sunday December 12th at 2.30pm. for details of that telephone 0845 400 2208 after 7pm or visit www.cinema-organs.co.uk/tickets.  Recording by kind permission of the artist and the COS Northern District Committee, using Zoom H4N Pro recorder, additional Rode Microphones and no post-processing or enhancements.

Welcome to the second of two September editions of the award-winning Community Keyboards - celebrating all that's best from the King of Instruments in all its guises - from theatre and classical organs to the latest in digital keyboard technology and beyond. On this programme it's concert time and an opportunity to hear part of some never-before-broadcast tour recordings undertaken in 1994 and 1997 by popular organist, former resident organist at Sandford Park in Poole, PAUL ROBERTS.  Over the years Paul has archived unique cassette recordings given to him by theatre proprietors following appearances at their venues.  These are one-off items which were provided for critical self-analysis only and as a momento of each concert.  They have largely remained unplayed and stored in cases until Paul asked me if I was able to digitise them.  The result is included in today's programme with extracts from the Riviera Theatre in Chicago and the Pittsburgh Theatre Organ Society. There is also music from ANGELA JOHNSON on Yamaha Clavinova, HARRY STONEHAM on Lowrey, the recent winners JOHN TAYLOR and DAVID HAMORY from the TDP Music Challenge, plus ANDY CARVILL joins us to help another listener with a musical dilemma in our popular "ASK ANDY" feature As always....a packed programme from the organ and keyboard world!

Welcome to "Between the Cracks" (or "the ones who got away").  Even though Community Keyboards has chatted with many organ and keyboard world celebrities, many more have avoided the probing questions of your host!  With the kind permission of THE ESSEX ORGAN MUSEUM (http://www.essexorganmuseum.com/links-Interest.html) we present an A to Z of those who never made it, for whatever reason, to the programme. Ole Erling was born Erling Axel Olsen on the 29th July 1938 at Nørrebro in Copenhagen. His early career was not in music. He worked for a period as caretaker, and trained as an electrician. He was called to the Hammond house, a large music store that specialized in organs, and while he repaired the light he saw how a big the Hammond organ would sound if it were played by a skilled musician. Erling Olsen decided that he would play the organ. However, a Hammond organ very expensive, and on apprentice wages it would take years to save up for it. That he became an Organ owner due to a happy coincidence: An Italian orchestra had run out of money, and to be able to afford the tickets home to Italy , there was no other option than to sell their instruments. Erling Olsen bought a portable Hohner organ from the orchestra. He began performing at weddings and confirmations, and eventually became a sought banquet musician. His career gained momentum when Ole Erling began recording fun music as well as the more lively repertoire. He extended the business with his own record label - Popular Music later PM Music - and with several recordings in the charts was making rapid progress in his musical career. In the early 1980s the interest in organ music was waning, and there were longer breaks between both record releases and performances. There were two events that led to Ole Erling returned to the musical scene: First the introduction of a new Wersi organ on the market which was a minor revolution, which gave Ole Erling the will to perform again. Then there was suddenly a nostalgic interest in music. Then for several years he performed at the Langeland Festival , where he played for a new generation of music lovers, much to the surprise of many - not least himself. Ole Erling died 20th February 2016 in Smørum. Extract and translation from the Ole Erling WIKIPEDIA page Ole Erling died 20th February 2016 Ole Erling plays HALLELUJAH on Hammo

William Arthur Davies was born at Bolton, Lancashire, on June 25 1921. At the age of seven he began taking piano lessons, and by the time he was 11 he was learning the organ with his uncle, who played at the local Methodist Chapel. William was soon to be found practicing on the local Lido and Odeon cinema organs. At the age of 18 he joined the RAF, and served in Ceylon. Davies's professional career began at the Gaumont cinema, Wolverhampton, in 1946. By late 1947 he was playing at the Gaumont, Finchley. He then moved to the West End of London. There, after a short spell at the Metropole, Victoria, he spent 18 months at the Dominion in Tottenham Court Road. In 1950 he moved towards arranging and composition, and began writing for the BBC Light Music Unit. He then embarked on his long association with the popular radio program, Friday Night is Music Night, as conductor, arranger and featured piano soloist. In 1956 Davies joined British Lion at Shepperton Studios and scored several films for them. By the 1960s he was Musical Director for Southern Television, and in 1972 he provided the music for Alistair Cooke's epic radio series Letter from America. In 1975 Davies worked with Alan Bennett on his television play Sunset Across the Bay, and three years later wrote the score for the film The Last Tasmanian. Throughout this time Davies could be heard on the BBC Theatre organ in London. He also played at various cinemas including, in 1960, the first organ broadcast in stereo, from the Trocadero at Elephant & Castle. In the 1970s Davies provided the backing for Gracie Fields. He later did a series of 15-minute programs for BBC Radio 2, At the Piano. He was still working in the 1990s, and in 1992 he wrote a completely new score for Ernst Lubitsch's German film from 1919, The Oyster Princess. Davies played the organ in his local church, first at Stoke Poges, and then at Sutton, Surrey. He was also connected with the Carmelite Priory in Kensington, where he played the organ for special Sunday services, religious holidays and at Christmas. Bill Davies married Eileen Watts in 1943. The marriage ended in 1987. In 1991 Davies married Felicity White. William Arthur Davies died 2nd March 2006. Bill Davies plays a selection of tunes M-R on the Compton Organ

Edwin LeMar Cole, known as Buddy Cole was a jazz pianist and orchestra leader. Buddy Cole was born in Irving, Illinois, and started his musical career in the theater playing between movies. He moved to Hollywood and played with a couple of bands, including the Alvino Rey big band, before becoming a studio musician. He played piano for Bing Crosby and toured with Rosemary Clooney. Although primarily known as a pianist, he had an abiding love for the organ, both Hammond and theatre organ. He worked extensively with Henry Mancini, who used his distinctive Hammond organ sound for the sound track to the TV series "Mr. Lucky". He also recorded several albums for Warner Brothers records on piano, Hammond organ and theatre pipe organ. He married Yvonne King, member of the King Sisters, They had two daughters, actress Tina Cole and Cathy Cole Green. He later married Clare Cole. George Blackmore was born in 1921 in Rochester, Kent. He commenced his musical studies as a chorister, attending the Cathedral Choir School. At the age of 12 he became the youngest ever to win the organ scholarship at King's School, Rochester. George developed an interest in the theatre organ and after playing the Compton at the Palace, Chatham he began occasional deputy work at the Compton in the Majestic, Rochester where he finally became organist in 1939 and made his first broadcast in 1941. In 1946 he took up the post of organist at the Gaumont, Birmingham. However, the Rank Organisation who now ran Gaumont and Odeon theatres began to make cuts in the numbers of circuit organists and in February 1950 George found himself out of a job. George spent seven years in Aberdeen as organist at the Astoria and the Capitol, broadcasting frequently and also acting as Musical Director for Donalds' other live entertainments. He also held the post of organist at St John's Episcopal Church. Finally in 1957, concerned at the general downturn in cinema-going, George left to become editor and arranger at Soon he returned to full-time organ playing, initially as demonstrator for manufacturers of electronic instruments (In 1968 he joined the Hammond Organ Co.) and then as one of Britons foremost freelance performers on both pipes and electronics, his concert tours taking him to the USA and Australia His death in 1994 robbed the organ world of one of its most popular and talented figures. Ena Rosina Baga was born in Clerkenwell London on January 5th 1906, her father, Constantine, was Italian and her mother, Charlotte, was Irish. Her father conducted a cinema orchestra at the Angel, Islington. The family moved to Southend on Sea for the good of Ena's health. Aged 12 she became the organist at the Roman Catholic church. Ena Baga had three sisters, all musical - two of them, Florence (De Jong) and Celeste, became cinema organists, the fourth sister, Beatrice, played violin and saxophone.   When the sisters played together they formed an ensemble called Bagatrix. Between 1925 and 1928 Ena played for silent movies, with the 'talkies' not requiring an organist Ena Baga changed direction to entertainer. From 1940 to 1945 Ena Baga replaced Reginald Dixon at the Tower Ballroom while he completed his 'National Service'. With many cinemas, including their organs, destroyed during the war and 'Talkies' taking over Ena changed direction again and embraced the new electronic 'Hammond' organ. Changing her repertoire to match the modern technology. Ena Baga Married Elliot Turnbull in 1929 and Thomas J Hamilton Brown in 1936. Ena Baga died 15th July 2004. Concurrently, she maintained a weekly radio show, The Rosemary Bailey Show, broadcast from Chicago. In 1970 she played a key role in the launch of the new Hammond 'Piper' keyboard with the first automatic rhythm accompaniment. Rosemary has performed with many name artists including Victor Borge and Pete Nero as well as the Duke Ellington Orchestra. Happy Birthday Dave Nicholas
Today, Monday 29th June marks the 85th birthday of Merseyside organist DAVE NICHOLAS Dave was born on June 29th 1935, very aptly, opposite the Plaza Cinema in Birkenhead, Merseyside, that had a 3/12 Compton Theatre organ. His parents moved in 1938 to Tranmere, Birkenhead, where, at the age of nineteen, he started playing organ professionally at the Plaza Cinema during the ice cream intervals. He played there for five months but as the organ was sadly fading at that time he had to finish. Dave had organ playing lessons from Ian Hamilton and Frank Gordon at the Ritz Cinema in Birkenhead in 1956. Dave started playing at the Sandon Hotel Liverpool in 1957 and at The Knot Hotel in Ellesmere Port, and The Charing Cross Club in Birkenhead in 1960. He played in local clubs and also played at Butlins in 1961 and in 1964 at Clacton Park Dance Festival where he played ‘Fun Jenja’ which became known as ‘March of the Mods’. Then after a break in September 1967 he played at the Regent Hotel Blackburn. Then next came, Woods Bolton and demonstrating Conn organs he played the first three manual Organ at the Frankfurt show. Dave also performed a couple of duets with none other than Blackpool’s very own, Reginald Dixon, at Kingston upon Thames. Dave went back to Butlins in June 1969 till 1973. During the Butlin years he was at the Metropole during the winter playing at Skegness , Filey, and then Clacton for three years in 1974 also touring for Yamaha. During the summer, Dave played at Scarborough and also for Robinson Cleaver. Having had to stay at home because his father was ill he started with Rushworths Music Store from 1976 until 1977. Then after many varied venues he played for Lord Lichfield at the Philharmonic Hall in Liverpool. From that time in June 1987 and onwards Dave has had solo residency at the Philharmonic hall and has been in this unique situation with the oldest orchestra in the world. The original hall unfortunately burnt down in 1933. However the new hall, built in 1938, has a unique rising cinema screen and is the only surviving one of its kind. This screen is just the job for projecting on to it vintage silent movies that Dave can accompany on the organ as used to happen in cinemas across the country early in the twentieth century. The orchestra was given Royal Patronage in 1957.   Dave is unique in being the only resident solo organist in a concert hall in the country. Dave has recorded 4 LPs, cassettes and CD at the Philharmonic Hall between 1987 and 1997. May we all wish our distinguished group member, a very, very, happy birthday, good health, and many more years ahead in his wonderful career. (Thanks to Keith Adamson from Home Organist & Keyboard Players Facebook Group for these notes)

Lockdown_Listen_A Lancashire Afternoon_January_1996
Warning!  Today's Lockdown Listen is bit narcissistic.  It's also the last for now as things hopefully return to a little normality. Someone asked me recently. If I'd ever been interviewed. I had to think about it, and first reaction was to say no - I wouldn't be brave enough.  But then,  I remembered, an afternoon in Blackburn, back in 1996, which was to all intents and purposes, the start of a three year connection with BBC Radio Lancashire.   I genuinely cannot recall why I was asked to appear on the station's daily afternoon magazine programme but, one Tuesday afternoon in January 1996, I parked outside the Darwen Street studios and unloaded my Technics EX30 organ from the back of the Citroen ZX into the reception area and was asked to go and park in the nearby shopping precinct.  Duly obliging, I walked back to the building only to find that the organ had vanished from the foyer!  Luckily, the station engineer George, had "kindly" removed it into the broadcast studio, had taken the back off and was poking and prodding around inside "the workings" to ensure it wouldn't blow up during the the show and take the BBC off the air!  I wonder how many organists have a free service of their instrument by Auntie Beeb! The presenter, Alison Brown, soon put me at my ease and as the 2.00pm news jingle faded...IAN WOLSTENHOLME went live to Lancashire! Very ironically, that same evening, a BBC regional forum meeting had been scheduled in nearby Preston.   I decided to go along, just to be nosey!  The meeting, which was well attended, became somewhat rowdy when one Lancashire chap stood up and commented that he had been listening earlier today to “some bloke playing his organ” and why couldn’t the BBC put more of that on the radio!  The poor panel, comprising BBC Northwest managers and other more senior luminaries had quite a struggle on their hands as shouts of “here here” and “well said” came from all quarters.  I could feel myself shrinking into my seat when (and I’ve never known quite why) I jumped up and said “I was that man”!!  The result was a return visit on the station’s Arts programme.  The presenter was a lovely lass who taught me to use the “desk” and equipment and I spent a very happy three years until 1999 producing and hosting KEYView on BBC Radio Lancashire from the very same studio that my good friend the late ERIC LORD used to present his popular "Organ Showcase" for many years.

Lockdown_Listen_Tony Back_March_2005
Today's Lockdown Listen first of all brings back many memories of a great organist and musician TONY BACK.  I little realised at the time that my conversation with the artiste at the old Bolton & District Organ Society in 2005, that this must have been extremely difficult for his to do.  It's only listening back after 15 years that there are certain words where he is quite emotional.  Had I known that just a few months after this recording, Tony was to leave us far too soon, I would have approached things completely differently.  Hindsight is a wonderful thing they say.  I apologise for the distortion on the interview and music which, in itself, is puzzling, since the other tracks on the CD are completely intact, as was the item when it was originally broadcast.  It's almost as though it shouldn't be played again.  Nonetheless, a much-missed talented entertainer. Following on Today's we feature someone who has (almost) written an entire book of witty and funny stories every day since the lockdown began on Facebook.  Mrs Dale's Diary has nothing on this!  It's interesting to follow the career of a successful organist and, I for one, can't remember him being this age.  I interviewed a rather nervous BRETT WALES at Trafford & District Organ Society in 1999.  Who would have thought that, 21 years later, he would be a successful organ festival producer, recording artist, loving husband and father and a hairy biker!

Lockdown_Listen_Howard Beaumont_June_2020
A first on today's Lockdown Listen as I'm joined from lockdown by one of the country's most popular organ stars - HOWARD BEAUMONT - our conversation being recorded only last week.  Howard has appeared on the programmes I've presented during the past four decades many many times.  His LP (if memory serves me right) on Wurlitzer electronic, was the very first track I ever played on the first edition of the first series and I seem to think he was the first artist I saw in concert at Huddersfield Town Hall in the early 1980's but was too scared to interview!  Anyway, grab a pen and paper for details of his latest musical venture.

My special guest on today's Lockdown Listen  tells me that, by all accounts, it's been more than 30 years since he made an appearance on the BBC Northwest radio programme Pedal, Percussion and Pipes presented by our good friend Alan Ashton.  Nonetheless, Norman Scott has maintained a hugely popular profile in the region, playing theatres, halls and electronic organ clubs. Well we met after a concert in Llandudno, North Wales in 2005. And the first question I asked was in what ways had his craft changed over the years.

Today's Lockdown Listen - not one but two guests.  The first is Ukranian accordion supremo ALEXANDER KORBAKOV whom I met at Stockport Accordion Club in 2005 - quite possibly the shortest interview I ever conducted! He plays an arrangement of "Tiko Tiko" (sic) like you've never heard before and an equally dazzling "Fiddle Faddle" from the pen of Leroy Anderson.  Even if you are not a fan of the accordion - trust me - you will be after this.  My second guest is DAVID HARRILD who appeared on the programme in 2018.  High Street retailers were having a bit of a tough time then but no-one could have predicted the greater blow to come with the coronavirus.  Hopefully, by the time this is broadcast, shops will be opened and trading again but with a "new norm" to become used to.

Today's "bumper" Lockdown Listen is a snapshot of the electronic organ in the 1980's as I visited the Slough HQ of Panasonic Technics for a "fly-on-the-wall" mini documentary for "Sounds Organised".  The first voice you will hear is that of KEITH EVANS, followed by PHIL LEADER, TONY PEGLER and ANDY SMITH - all popular names and together forming the EMID (Electronic Musical Instrument Division) of the once-great brand in the UK.  You will hear music performed by Tony and Andy on Technics G7 and there's no truth in the rumour that I still have sleepless nights from the incessant practical jokes and gaffs which (in those days of reel-to-reel recording) were too much trouble to edit out.  Actually, with hindsight - I'm pretty glad I didn't.  Wonderful memories, warts and all, of a great era in our organ world.  Enjoy!

Today's Lockdown Listen could arguably be described as one of those "family album" editions - since it tracks the musical career of JOHN BOWDLER, one of the longstanding resident organists at the Tower Ballroom in Blackpool.  In 1987, then 16 year old John made a debut appearance at my local organ society and I spoke to him for the old hospital radio "Sounds Organised" programme.   The next couple of times we caught up in 1999 and 2002, he was well-established with a career playing at the prestigious seaside landmark.  He has now completed 33 years, having started straight from school.  Have a look at some videos on John's website http://www.johnbowdler.com.

Lockdown_Listen_Walt Strony_Troxy_2019
Today's Lockdown Listen is a fairly recent "Community Keyboards" extract from March last year when we sent our microphones down to the Troxy in the Limehouse district of London for a special concert featuring American supremo Walt Strony.  It was a bit of a gamble this one!  I had been unable to pre-arrange a meeting with the artist, was completely unfamiliar with the venue or organ (apart from recordings in its previous home at the Troc E&C).  I had arrived way too early (Sunday trains from Manchester to Euston, then tube and DLR uncertainty) so decided to grab a bit to eat at the "local" McDonalds.  It's surprising how close these things look on an iPhone map screen!  I walked and walked...and walked for about a couple of miles, little realising that I was passing through some very dubious areas, where earlier that week there had been shootings and stabbings, got to McD's and realised that there was about 40 mins to curtain up!  Needless to say, I opted for the take out burger and fries!  Luckily a bus stop was right outside just as a bus was approaching.  I jumped on, hastily devoured the food and alighted outside the Troxy.  As I entered the beautiful Art Deco foyer, a familiar "Who's Who" of organists were assembled.  I walked into the auditorium, having stopped for a word or two of "hello's" and just happened to turn around to (literally) bump into Walt, dressed in raincoat and carrying a music bag.  We both said "excuse me" at the same time.   I decided to "grab the bull by the horns", quickly introduced myself and was staggered when he graciously invited me backstage to record the interview before the start of the concert.  This is usually a definite "no-no", particularly with about 20 mins to showtime but the deal was that we would stand up/sit down whilst Walt got dressed into concert gear!  A very memorable day for many different reasons.

Today's Lockdown Listen features organist RUSSELL HOLMES.  I cannot for the life of me think of the reason or circumstances as to why I asked Russell the opening question in this 1999 telephone interview/conversation.  At the time he had just released a recording on the 3/18 ex Ritz Luton Wyton House Wurlitzer with an interesting background story.  What I do remember is the level of research and preparation that the artist did for the programme and, to this day, have rarely met anyone who was so eloquent in his answers to questions.

Today's Lockdown Listen features music and conversation with JOHN MANN and SARAH BRYANT.  Even though "His Eminents" John has retired recently and published his memoirs, you will no doubt have seen his spontaneous performances at the piano for "Clapping for Carers" - Mr Showman as ever!  Similarly, at these times of being somewhat housebound, it's been great to see the hugely talented Sarah playing and presenting little Facebook jewels on social media.  It's little known that John often shy's away from interviews with the media and I've been lucky to be an exception since the early 80's so enjoy this chat from 2017.

If, like me, you've accepted the 10 albums in 10 days challenge, you'll know that you're not allowed to say anything - just to post the picture of the album cover.   Well, I couldn't resist explanations - not on Facebook - but via this special edition of Community Keyboards which I hope you'll enjoy!

Lockdown_Listen_Pete Shaw_April_2017
Today's Lockdown Listen features PETE SHAW - multi keyboard performer extraordinaire.  Pete first made a lasting impression at one of the early Morecambe organ festivals presented by his old company Dawson’s (who thankfully have just avoided going into administration recently). Pete decided to go it alone and has made a tremendous success of entertaining over four decades these days presenting Korg Keyboards.

Lockdown_Listen_Phil Kelsall_1983_2017
Blackpool Tower’s Ballroom is home to what must be the most famous and most played Wurlitzer in the world and Phil Kelsall has amazingly now completed more than 40 years at the Tower, having been appointed in 1975, initially as organist in the Tower Circus band with occasional appearances in the Ballroom. In 1977 Ernest Broadbent the then Tower organist, retired through ill-health and Phil was the obvious choice as the new principal resident organist, a position he has held ever since.  My two featured conversations with Phil on today's Lockdown Listen were recorded at the Tower and at the Paramount Cinema, Penistone, 34 years apart.  It would not surprise me in the least if there's another chat in the next 30 years - I'll get the zimmer frame oiled up ready!

Lockdown_Listen_Jim Vogelman_May 2001
On a previous "from the archives" programme, I have included my conversation with Lowrey USA star JIM VOGELMAN, in the immediate aftermath of 9/11.  This earlier conversation took place in May of 2001,  just four months before those tragic events in New York.  Here, Jim chats to me about the popularity of Lowrey organs and there's music from the Lowrey Majesty captured by our microphones at the OKC festival event that year.

Lockdown_Listen_Graeme Wright_1984
One of the most un-nerving interviews I ever did was with one of the nicest guys in the business - the late Graeme Wright.  Listening back to this conversation in 1984, you can tell that I inadvertently caused offence when talking about Farfisa and Bontempi organs.  I don't think he ever forgave me!  Graeme sadly passed away in 2015 and my broadcasting colleague Alan Ashton recorded a special tribute programme on Organ1st Radio (http://organradio.com/archive/) in Show 96 August 2015.  As someone cited on a tribute website: "The guy that taught me to play always maintained Graeme Wright was the best British organist of his generation on the basis of being peerless when it came to making cheap organs sound expensive".  How right he was.

Community Keyboards with Ian Wolstenholme

Lockdown_Listen_Peter Hayward_1999
Today's Lockdown Listen guest Peter Hayward continues to be one of the most popular organists particularly on You Tube where he regularly performs on a variety of instruments including Oral Ringway and Technics digital piano.  He has been a demonstrator/presenter for many well-known companies across the years.  A professional musician for over forty years in the UK, before emigrating (and semi-retiring) to be near to his daughter and grandchildren, Peter has been a regular monthly contributor to Organ and Keyboard Cavalcade since its conception, his popular article covering all aspects of keyboard music. He has indeed written many successful books on music : his motto being “Professional Tips - Just for Fun - All explained in plain English - No Jargon”. It is this down to earth philosophy that has made him a popular figure at the Organ and Keyboard Cavalcade Festivals, where he is always happy to share his musical knowledge, gathered over a lifetime.  Peter now lives in Spain. This conversation was recorded at the Keyboard Cavalcade Festival in Blackpool in 1999

Lockdown_Listen_Trevor Bolshaw_1986
Today's Lockdown Listen features a 1986 conversation I had with Devon-based organist Trevor Bolshaw.  Trevor has lived for over thirty years in Devon where he is involved in teaching, recording and playing concerts, either as a soloist or in an accompaniment capacity. He has visited the U.S.A. many times as a soloist performing concerts in Los Angeles, Phoenix and Atlanta, Georgia where he has appeared twice at the famous Fox Theatre. He has also played concerts at various venues in Holland.  On the occasion of this archive recording, Trevor was guest organist of the Lancastrian Theatre Organ Trust at the Oldham Bluecoat School Christie organ.

Lockdown_Listen_Nigel Ogden_1982
Today's Lockdown Listen features arguably the man who did more to raise the profile of the organ than anyone, largely thanks to his almost four-decade tenure as host of the national BBC radio programme until its demise in 2018.  Over the years I've chatted several times with Nigel Ogden and, on these three occasions recorded in 1982 at Oldham Bluecoat School, 2003 at a Methodist Church in Oldham and 2018 at Stockport Town Hall just as the news broke that "The Organist Entertains" was coming off-air, if nothing else, it demonstrates how our voices have changed!

Today's Lockdown Listen is an opportunity to hear again my conversation with "Lovely Lady" Miss Frieda Hall.  The "Queen of the Keys" (version 1!) appeared towards the end of her musical career at the Paramount Organ Studios in Darcy Lever, Bolton, Lancashire.  I sat down for a chat with, quite possibly, the "poshest" guest ever to appear on the show!

Way back in 1984 I joined the crowds (literally) of enthusiasts who could often be found attending one of the many "dealer demonstration" events held up and down the country in "posh" hotels.  On this occasion, the company was Technics and the artist - the one and only "clown prince" of the organ world TONY PEGLER, who joined me on what was a series called "Sounds Organised" on the Radio Cavell Oldham Hospital network.  The recording was mostly unedited, recorded very late in the evening after one such successful demonstration of Technics organs.  Enjoy the second part of the chat!
