Connected To The Land Podcast

By The Village Soundcast Network

The Connected To The Land Podcast is a bi-weekly podcast that explores what it means to be meaningfully connected to the land in a 21st century Canada. We are all connected to the land – through the food and crops we grow, the resources we dig for, the places we call home, and the travels we embark upon. Join host and traveling musician, Ian Sherwood on his mission to learn more. In each episode, Ian talks to homesteaders, farmers, gardeners, and many others, to discover how each of us interacts with the natural world and how he can tap back into the essence of where we all came from.

Wilderstead: Where The Land Meets The Wilderness

Wilderstead: Where The Land Meets The Wilderness

Welcome to the Connected To The Land podcast, sponsored by Peavey Mart.

On this latest episode, Ian chats with Dave and Amanda. Situated in the hills of Algoma, Northern Ontario, Dave and Amanda are building their homestead by embracing the surrounding wilderness. Working sustainably with what is seasonally available on and around the Wilderstead, they use their website, Facebook, Instagram, and Youtube channel to document their adventures while becoming self-reliant with one full time and one part time “Wildersteader”. They add a different perspective to the existing community of similar websites and Youtube channels. They differ from most homesteading websites and Youtubers, because they supplement what they can grow and raise theirselves with what we can forage and catch in nature. They differ from most outdoor adventure and bushcraft blogs because this is their lifestyle and not their hobby. They hope their website and videos will be useful to people that also want to be more self-reliant, in particular, in colder climates like northern Ontario.

Gentleman's Farm: Winter's Begun

Gentleman's Farm: Winter's Begun

Welcome to the Connected To The Land podcast, sponsored by Peavey Mart.

On this latest episode, Ian chats with Mallorie and Ben, fulltime homesteaders, trying to revive a neglected 1800's 200 acre homestead. Located in cold zone 3 Quebec, they have to deal with the challenges of a very short growing season and deep deep snow in the winter. Due to a serious accident in Afghanistan with the Canadian Forces in 2007, Ben suffers from chronic back pain and PTSD. In turn, Mallorie and Ben rely heavily on a lot of machinery to help out with the heavy lifting on the farm: a skidder to harvest the wood from their beautiful mixed wood forest, farm tractors, a Kubota Excavator, and a saw mill to make all of their building materials. They are also big on reusing and recycling, so sometimes their buildings may be a bit unconventional, but it works for them.

Homesteading: From City To Acreage

Homesteading: From City To Acreage

Welcome to the Connected To The Land podcast, sponsored by Peavey Mart. On this latest episode, Ian chats with Gareth Martin. Over the last 10 years, Gareth and family embarked on a journey to grow more of their food in a sustainable way in the big city of Edmonton, Alberta. They started by tearing up their grass and planting a large garden and food forest, then added some chickens for eggs. They loved it but yearned for more growing space and larger animals. In June 2021, they decided to leave both of their careers and build a homestead on an island in Ontario. They moved to a 180 year old limestone house with 10 acres to try their hands at creating a homestead and continuing their love of growing their own food, building a relationship with this land and building a community rooted in sustainable and regenerative farming. Here they are today with fifteen chickens, lots of work to do and some big plans for the future.

 Sheep: Joining The Flock

Sheep: Joining The Flock

Welcome to the Connected To The Land podcast, sponsored by Peavey Mart. On this latest episode, Ian chats with Lynn McKay of Ewetopia Farms. Lynn was born and raised a "city girl" until her acquisition of a small farm in Alberta in 2000 when she purchased her first Shetland sheep. Since then, she moved to London, Ontario where she became heavily involved in breeding and showing Shetland sheep. As the niche market for Shetlands became saturated, Lynn changed her focus from wool sheep to meat sheep and purchased her first Dorper sheep. She sold these as breeding stock and placed well in the show ring at major events such as Toronto's Royal Winter Agricultural Fair for several years.

After another move and a divorce, the Dorpers had to be sold and she only kept a pet-flock of Shetland sheep. However, now Lynn is back in the sheep industry with Suffolk sheep. In 2006, Lynn partnered with Arnie Droogh and in 2010 they purchased their first Suffolks and together established Ewetopia Farms.

Agriculture: Dry fields and Silver Linings

Welcome to the Connected To The Land podcast, sponsored by Kodiak Boots and Peavey Mart

On this latest episode, Ian chats with Quick Dick McDick (Dickson Delorme), who is part of a 4000 acre/350 head mixed farming operation near Tuffnell, SK. Dickson grew up just North of Tuffnell, SK on a PFRA community pasture as the son of a working cowboy family where he learned to ride, rope and care for livestock.
Life after school took him out to the oil and gas industry where he worked in the commercial transportation side of well completions for 19 years.  This career took him all across AB, BC and the Territories.
Dickson came back home to Tuffnell in the fall of 2019 and accidentally created a social media persona named Quick Dick McDick.
Now when he is not busy on the farm, Dickson spends his time trying to inspire and inform people of the many things that happen here in Canada that keep us fed, watered and sheltered – all while trying to keep people laughing.
“I’m passionate about agriculture because it, like every other industry, depends on all of us doing our part and working together to keep not just Canada,  but the world fed.”

Welcome to the Connected To The Land podcast, sponsored by Peavey Mart

On this episode, Ian has a chat with Willoughby Arevalo, who is passionate about the ecology of fungi, the ways they shape our world and the ways we shape theirs. His lifelong friendship with fleshy fungi has led him down a mycelial pathway – from a start in field identification and mushroom hunting, branching into cuisine, DIY cultivation, farming, education, writing and eco-arts. In his over thirty year relationship with fungi, he has spent the last decade sharing mycology with people in communities across North America. This has manifested in numerous presentations, art projects, teaching tours, collaborations, gatherings, and his book, DIY Mushroom Cultivation, published by New Society Publishers.

Originally from Arcata, California (Traditional Wiyot and Yurok Territory), he lives as a grateful guest on Unceded Coast Salish Territory in Vancouver, BC.

Exploring The Back Road: Jeep Life

Exploring The Back Road: Jeep Life

Welcome to the Connected To The Land podcast, sponsored by Peavey Mart

In this episode, our host Ian Sherwood has a chat with Aldo and Darsh, who moved to Canada from India in 2017. After living and working in Toronto for over 2 years, they realized that they didn’t know a lot about the country they called home. So they gathered their savings, quit their jobs and started exploring Canada in their Jeep Wrangler JL. Their journey began February of 2020, but was cut short by the pandemic in April (only 2 months into their trip). With no sign of travel restrictions being lifted, they put the Jeep into park and shifted their sense of adventure to building an off-the-grid cabin in Nova Scotia. Several months, lots of tough decisions, blood, sweat and tears later, their off-grid cabin by the lake was complete. They now sneak off on weekend adventures, exploring the backroads of Nova Scotia. They share their experiences on PROJECT JEEPLIFE (Instagram, YouTube & Facebook) and aim to continue living a life filled with Travel-Overlanding-Off-Grid Living and anything else life throws at them.

They loaded their lives into their 2006 30-foot Carriage fifth wheel and headed out for the great outdoors where they found a level of adventure, tranquility and  community that has largely been lost to the fast-paced hectic world we all  live in.

The Urban Farmer: Winter Growing

Welcome to the Connected To The Land podcast, sponsored by Peavey Mart.

In this episode, Ian sits down and talks to Curtis Stone, a farmer, author, speaker and consultant. His area of expertise is in quick growing, high value annual vegetables for direct consumer market streams. His book, The Urban Farmer demonstrates organic intensive techniques with a focus on business and systems to streamline labour and production. He offers a new way to think about farming. One where quality of life and profitability coexist.  Curtis’ farm, Green City Acres is located in Kelowna, BC, Canada and was established in 2010. In an eight month growing season, the farm generates over $75,000 per year on only one third of an acre. This is done by specializing in a select group of high value, quick growing crops that allow for multiple plantings in the same beds as well as calculated intercropping strategies. The farm has been recognized internationally, as flag ship example of how profitable and productive urban agriculture can be.

Luckett Vineyards: Wine and Agritourism

Luckett Vineyards: Wine and Agritourism

Welcome to the Connected To The Land Podcast, sponsored by AMSOIL

On this episode, Ian has a chat with the amazing Pete Luckett

Like many business adventurers, Pete’s early success encouraged him to push the boundaries and test the waters. He crossed the Atlantic in 1979, spending several years exploring culinary experiences. With a new global perspective he was ready to settle down and take Atlantic Canada by storm. He grew from a single retail outlet in New Brunswick in 1982, to one of Atlantic Canada’s best known and loved brands...Pete’s Frootique. Landing in Nova Scotia in 1992, Pete grew his grocery business, now known as "Pete’s Fine Foods” , a multi-million dollar retail with locations in Halifax and Bedford, Nova Scotia.

For 14 years Pete also appeared on the national television program, Midday, where he extolled the flavour and health virtues of exotic fruits and vegetables. His weekly newspaper column and books feature exciting recipes. His food adventure television series, The Food Hunter, aired internationally for 3 seasons and enticed consumers from the comfort of their armchairs.

In 2011 Pete launched Luckett Vineyards. Nestled in the hillsides of Nova Scotia’s enchanting Gaspereau Valley, the vineyard offers stunning views of the Minas Basin and Blomidon and is beautifully positioned to take advantage of a fertile terroir. Luckett Vineyards produces wines true to the maritime climate and showcase the local grape varietals that truly are worth phoning home about.

Inspired to build the Luckett Vineyard brand, Pete announced the sale of his grocery retail and wholesale business to Sobeys in 2015. The move from a perishable business to a product that only grows better with age, Luckett Vineyards is Pete’s new calling.

But he’ll always have a Tooodleeedooo!! for anyone that passes by!

Indoor Growing: Year-Round Sustenance

Indoor Growing: Year-Round Sustenance

Welcome to the Connected To The Land Podcast, sponsored by AMSOIL

On this episode, Ian has a chat with Anna Esau, founder of Northern Homestead, an amazing blog about cold climate urban homesteading!

The Esau family moved to Alberta, Canada in the fall of 2007. Little did they know how long Canadian winters are. By March, they were sure that green grass was just around the corner. We all know, it was not. Instead it snowed some more. In late May spring finally arrived followed by a short, cool summer. Nevertheless, Anna decided to take the plunge into gardening in cold climate, and did not stop when snow and ice covered the ground in any of the summer months. Her husband Jakob played a significant role in growing food, from preparing their first raised bed at a rented house to building a Geodesic Dome greenhouse and installing south-facing windows for a winter garden. Anna is the writer and gardener at Northern Homestead, a personal blog about year round growing, preserving and preparing plant food in cold climate:

Community Gardens: Growing Connections

Community Gardens: Growing Connections

Welcome to the Connected To The Land Podcast, sponsored by Peavey Mart.

On this week's show, Ian learns all about the Butler Urban Farm Project from his very special guests Chris Torres and Bonnie Klohn. Chris is the Urban Farm Manager and Bonnie is the Finance and Policy Lead of the Kamloops Food Policy Council.

Started in 2015, the Butler Urban Farm Project’s goals have been to grow as much food as possible in their modest urban garden, and also to provide opportunities for people in the community to engage in the food growing process. Currently run by the Kamloops Food Policy Council, the project has increased community interest in growing food and self-sufficiency. Everything they grow is organic, and they draw from principles of permaculture and regenerative agriculture to create rich, productive soil that can produce nutrient-rich vegetables. In 2020, the Kamloops Food Policy Council was awarded the annual Community Agricultural Grant from Peavey Industries for the project.

Yellow Brick Road Farms: A Generational Hobby

Welcome to the Connected To The Land Podcast, sponsored by Mr. Heater.

In this episode, host Ian Sherwood talks to Jennifer Spencer, a 'too-many-generations-to-count' homesteader/farmer. She loves advocating for the good things in life: self-sufficiency, inspiration, and purpose. Her Yellow Brick Road Farm is on an acre of land on Cape Sable Island (not the one with the horses….well they do have horses but it's not THAT Sable Island). Cape Sable Island is located on the very Southwest tip of Nova Scotia, Canada and it is very MUCH a fishing village.  Jennifer and her husband Trevor, the reluctant farmer, raised their four children there: Courtney, married to Big Luke and living on their own with grandsons Owen and Oliver ; Logan, 19 living on his own as he finishes up becoming an Electrician; Charlize 16; and Little Luke 12.

She was born in Auckland, New Zealand, raised in Toronto and currently lives in Pickering. She has been slowly taking over her entire backyard, front yard and even down the side of her house to grow food.
