34. The RFI Blockchain
Eddie talks about one of his favorite history topics, The Civil War, and how that relates to the construction industry. Also we establish why Blockchain could help us answer RFI quicker! He has made the connection and walks us through how the changes and advancements in technology can cause gaps in our tactics. He shows some examples from the Civil War on how educated people can make poor decisions because technology has passed them by. Don’t let technology make what you are doing obsolete. 33. Keeping Glass & Glazing Contractors Safe (feat Steven Brooks)
Let’s make the robots do the hard work. Why do we expect glass and glazing contractors to lift heavy sheets of glass into place, and we don’t expect steelworkers to carry around beams and columns? This week, we talk to Steven Brooks about the Smart Lift. The Smart Lift can increase longevity for glaziers in the glass industry and decrease injuries on the job site. We also chat about autonomy in the glass and glazing industry, and why it won’t be replacing people any time soon. Also, Eddie shows us what the Amish do when they need to move something heavy. This week, we are joined by Mark Fly the "BidCoach"; he reminds us of where technology in construction started, where we are today, how we got there, and where we are going. We discuss how information silos are being connected and what we need to do to continue that process. Data access is important to be able to ensure the smoothest processes on site. Somehow we end up off track (not shocking) and talk about platform loyalty and the hidden cost and trade offs of choosing the cheapest bid. 9. Virtual Design and Construction Reality Check (feat. Benjamin Crosby)
This week Eddie and Tyler sit down with Benjamin Crosby of Yates Construction to talk about VDC (Virtual Design and Construction) and BIM (Building Information Modeling). Since Eddie and Tyler both make their living in the BIM/VDC world, it's good to have a reality check every once in a while. Benjamin provides that insight! Benjamin's focus is to build a unified team to complete a successful project. He believes that a high level of communication and cooperation are produced with VDC, which brings all the players together to focus on the project as a whole.  As Director of BIM (Building Information Modeling), Benjamin is responsible for all the BIM projects Yates is currently completing.  He is also educating Yates' management in the general application of BIM policies, techniques, and benefits. As Yates is fully embracing BIM, they have seen that there are greater benefits to be gained the more other team members join in the process.   As a result, Benjamin spends much of his time teaching VDC/BIM classes,  hosting online education, and traveling to projects to help not only Yates but all the project team to gain the benefits that result from a collaborative BIM process.  Related Links Yates Website Benajmin’s LinkedIn Guy blowing up his backyard Thanks for listening! 8. Mani Golparvar & John Jurewicz - Reconstruct
This week Eddie and Tyler sit down with Mani Golparvar of Reconstruct and John Jurewicz of Wallbridge. Reconstruct is a platform that allows its users to easily combine data from various sources. All of your 3D models, point clouds and 360 videos can be put into the same platform and stitched together using artificial intelligence. One of the key benefits of doing this is the transparency it can provide in progress monitoring. Scans can be done more often since the process can be as simple as walking around with a 360 camera. Since they’re using AI to get the heavy lifting done, the result is a quick turnaround so you can use those 3D files before the job site has changed making the scans obsolete. John dives into his real real-world experience and gives us a good perspective on where Reconstruct has improved his projects and where he’s excited to see more development done.
