How Musician Etana is Surviving the Quarantine | BHL's Quarantine Conversations

Singer, songwriter, and humanitarian Etana is a powerhouse vocalist and Grammy Award, nominee. More than a decade after her debut as a reggae artist, she is now a recognized and respected entertainer in her native Jamaica and becoming more famous worldwide. Born Shauna McKenzie, the young talent migrated to the United States for the opportunity and briefly pursued a pop music career before rediscovering her roots as an adult and adopting the moniker Etana, “The Strong One” in Swahili. The return home spurred the evolution of her sound and is evident in her body of work expressed as the fusion of folk, soul, jazz, and reggae. Etana taps into the likes of Marcia Griffiths, Etta James, and Miriam Makeba for harnessing a deeply emotional sound and she is the modern embodiment of their influence. In 2008 Etana debuted the album The Strong One featuring various musicians and producers. The project reached the #12 spot on the Reggae Billboard chart, and consecutively released singles released by VP Records helped to introduce the spirited singer to the world. Lyrical hits “Warrior Love” and “I Am Not Afraid” made a lasting impression, as did “Free” and “Happy Heart” from the second album Free Expressions, notably a repeat Reggae Billboard chart climber. Not to be outdone, she released her fourth album I Rise to much acclaim, nabbing the #1 spot on the iconic chart, marking the first female artist out of Jamaica to earn such a designation seventeen years. Fast forward to 2018, Etana was nominated for the 61st Annual Grammy Awards for Reggae Forever in the Best Reggae Album category. The project was co-produced by Etana and the distinction by The Recording Academy marked the first time in over twenty years that a woman was designated that bracket. In 2019 she released the eight-track EP Dimensions, her latest full-length album Gemini is scheduled for a Summer 2020 debut, with multiple singles dropping leading up to the main event.

Talking with the cast of Funny Married Stuff | BHL's Conversations

Black Hollywood Live host Takira Shabrae interviews the cost of Funny Married Stuff today on Conversations.

Funny Married Stuff is a comedic web series about Lony’e and Peyton Perrine poking fun at one another while navigating through the confusing world of marriage and parenthood!

The show is a parody on their daily lives, as they try not to drive each other crazy dealing with topics of image, sex, communication, and parenting.

In the series, the cast of friends and extended family are just as crazy as Lony’e & Peyton, as they navigate their own issues and relationships while playing parodies of themselves.

Funny Married Stuff was created to inspire those looking to get married and to remind married couples that although marriage is hard, it’s worth figuring out.  The show combines improv humor and relatable situations with a touch of marital lessons. At the end of the day it’s all about living, learning, and laughing with the one you love.

Interview w/ Chloe Mondesir | BHL's Conversations

Interview w/ Chloe Mondesir | BHL's Conversations

Black Hollywood live host Lem Gonsalves interviews Chloe Mondesir today on Conversations.

Chloe Mondesir is an American Actress. She was born and raised in Oak Cliff, a borough of Dallas, Texas. Chloe graduated from Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts where she was able to attend advanced placement courses in both academics and the arts. Chloe attended Newman University on a soccer scholarship. After a year of College in Wichita, Kansas, she decided to join the United States Marine Corps. Chloe served 4 years in the Marines as an Ammunition Technician. She spent 2 years in Okinawa, Japan at the Ammunition Supply Point, 1 year at the School of Infantry in North Carolina, and she completed a tour of duty in Fallujah, Iraq. Chloe was awarded a Certificate of Accommodation for her part in successfully transporting 300,000 tons of ammunition during her deployment.

After completing a 4 year contract with the Marines, a failed marriage, and becoming a single mother, Chloe found herself back in Dallas, TX homeless. For a year she lived in her car and took her daughter to “visit” family members to avoid the feeling of shame and failure. Eventually she was able to get back on her feet and decided that she would return to her first love; the arts. Chloe saved her money from a temporary job she had been working, packed her and her daughters clothes, and drove to Los Angeles to chase her dreams of becoming a working actress.

After studying Theatre at Los Angeles City College, she landed an internship at Station Film as a production assistant. Chloe used her position to learn as much about the industry as possible. She soon found herself going on auditions on a regular basis. Auditioning proved to be a challenge for the young actress as she was forced to bring her (then) 3 year old daughter along. Though completing the audition process with a small child was a challenge, it ended up landing Chloe’s daughter in a national Super Bowl Commercial and eventually a contract with a well known agency. As she managed her daughter’s acting career, Chloe completed her Business degree with a concentration in Marketing online.

With more time on her hands, Chloe hit the ground running after making her debut in the film “A Race against Time: The Sharla Butler Story.” She also appeared in BET''s hit comedy "Real Husbands of Hollywood." Chloe's counterparts say, “Her vibrant, energetic, and incredibly positive spirit is contagious!" Chloe has also taken classes taught by influential individuals and groups including Robert Townsend, Hawthorne James, and The Groundlings. Chloe credits her acting ability to her great teachers and life experiences, as she is able to bring a little of her past experiences into her characters
Outside of acting, Chloe donates her time to a non-profit organization called Pin-Ups for Vets . Pin-Ups for Vets is a non-profit organization that raises money for underfunded Veteran Affairs Programs as well as equipment for Veterans Hospitals. Chloe, along with many other volunteers, dress in 1920’s style PinUp and visit hospitalized Veterans around the country. She’s also associated with The Vet Hunters Project, an organization that helps to reunite homeless Veterans with their loved ones. In addition to working and volunteering, Chloe works regularly with the Department of Children and Family Services in the Emergency Response Unit.

JAMAICA HOUSE, “the studio 54 of rap,” was LA’s biggest urban nightspot of the 90s, lasting over a decade. Venture behind the velvet rope of Hollywood, with reggae & hip-hop’s golden-era royalty. Founded by four boyhood friends, the club was a flashpoint in cultural history, surviving gangs, drugs, the L.A. Riots, plus growing violence in the music and culture. This chronicle is also a coming of age story for its boyhood founders, and for rap itself. As the music changed, the club ‘blew-up’ beyond it’s original underground roots.
