Ira discussed the latest Generation – Alpha. In my typical searching, I found this great article in The Atlantic about Generation Alpha and the general issue of generational delineations.

We had a lengthy conversation about Generation X, so back to googling and I found many interesting articles about that generation including this one.

Sam talked about working with both John Sperling and George Soros.  I knew of Soros but did not know much about Sperling.

Sam told the story of the changing of the term “Climate Change” from “Global Warming” and credited Republican strategist Frank Luntz with the change in term.  I went hunting and found this interesting piece.

Sam provides a very detailed means of crafting emails that will demand a response especially by a unique subject line, use of the person’s name liberally throughout the email (at least three times – beginning, middle and in the call to action…which is the most important point – a call to action.

We spend a lot of time discussing 10x people and Michael does a great job of explaining it but here is a little piece of information to add to the discussion.

Michael mentioned following a non profit path and worked with a group to create The Kristin Ann Carr Fund to provide grants to research Sarcoma.

Michael and Rishon founded 10x Management to provide 10xers in tech with talent management akin to artist management for musicians.

Michael mentions going into a flow state. If you want to know more about Flow state, I recommend reading Flow: The Psychology of Optimal Experience by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi.

I had a great conversation with Anne Gannon.  Anne is the principal of the Largo Group.  I couldn’t remember where I lived so I had to remember that I lived in Middlesex County but Union County had great golf courses.

Sleepy Hollow County Club was the location of Anne’s favorite golf memory.

There were a lot of animal sounds during the recording of our conversation as Anne and her husband own a African Grey, which is a type of parrot.

Anne offers many free resources and courses for entrepreneurs and business owners on her website, under what she has dubbed The Largo Group Academy.

Hank Ingram is the proprietor of O.H. Ingram River Aged Whiskey. He brought some by for a tasting. We starting tasting his Flagship.

Hank mentioned the term white dog, the clear spirit prior to aging, so I was curious to look up a bit more.

I’m a lawyer so of course I was interested in the Supreme Court case Hank mentioned as the basis for getting his floating rickhouse approved. For the non lawyers, here is an article, and here is the real deal.

Tom has a background in NLP. Here is a brief overview of the inputs that Tom spoke of.

Tom’s favorite British Statistician of the 1700s actually turns out is George E.P. Boxof the 1900s, but no matter. The quote is “All models are wrong but some are useful.”

I mentioned the concept that it is not a lack of resources but rather a lack of resourcefulness that stops you attributed to Tony Robbins. This lead to a conversation about Self Directed Learning. Tom mentioned four components to self directed learning: 1) Being Resourceful 2) Having a Desire 3) Having Persistence and 4) Having Initiative.

Tom introduced us to the conative, the third area of the brain.

Ok, so the backpack review guy is Chase Reeves. And my backpack is the Pro Executive from Waterfield.

Tom introduced us to the Google Ngram Viewer. I went down a rabbit hole playing with it.

Tom mentioned one of my favorite reads of last year, Atomic Habits by James Clear and his exploration of habits as systems.

We went back in TV history to L.A. Law and their opening scene each week.

So Tom didn’t give me much to go on with his next tidbit…Gail something from Dominican University. I found her (Dr. Gail Mathews) and the study about writing things down.

Tom’s Daily Ritual:

Tom looks at his digital task list. His choice of digital task/idea manager is todoist.

Tom uses fountain pens to hand write one page of tasks into an analog notebook and then works out of the notebook during the day. Tom’s choice of notebooks is the Baronfig.

At the end of the day, Tom transfers his notes from the day into his digital manager.

Debbie went to USC film school and wanted to be a film critic. She did celebrity interviews that she got just by calling them. These included George Segal, Richard Dreyfuss and Henry “the Fonz” Winkler.

The Environmental Media Association, which Debbie has spent her career with was started by Norman Lear and Alan Horn.

Debbie’s good friend is Wendie Malick who starred on Just Shoot Me!

I mentioned Ed Begley Jr. who was on a documentary about the EV1, Who Killed the Electric Car. Debbie told a story about Ed riding his bicycle to the Oscars.

Debbie convinced Wendie Malick to get David Spade to host the 10thanniversary of the EMA awards ceremony with her.

Debbie helped build the brand around the EMA by recruiting Amy Smart to help out (She later set Amy up with her future husband.)

Debbie mentioned not knowing what a Step and Repeat is…in case you don’t either.

So I told Debbie I don’t love the paper straw but that I had used a straw made of pasta which we both agreed was genius. So now I know where you can get them.

Olympic National Park is where Denver took his wife for their 15th anniversary.

Denver referenced getting skewered on Saturday Night Live and the late night talk shows. I couldn’t find the episodes for the Jimmys – Kimmel and Fallon but here is Stephen Colbert. All of this proves – you really make it when the late night shows make fun of you.

I love how Denver “hugged the cactus” and embraced the disinformation two times – coming from both sides of the aisle. See this recent article in the New York Times.

Denver told the story of how they got into the distilling business and it started with a trip to oh Ben Nevis Distillery and Highland cows.

John also brought up his new found interest in all things health and wellness and I asked if he read The Omnivore's Dilemma by Michael Pollen.

He had watched a documentary series - Down to Earth on Netflix which brought him to read SuperLife by Darin Olien.  I had never heard of this one before so immediate bought it and I have the show teed up to watch.
