Sol Soils...Time for Repotting

Sol Soils...Time for Repotting

It's time to try new and different things! It's the first day of March. The freshness and newness of a new season feel great! The Camellia buds are swelling, daffodils are opening up, and the crocus lift their heads to welcome us back into the garden.

I took a break from podcasting. After a moment to gather my thoughts, I had a few speaking engagements here and there, traveled to some exciting places, and promoted my books. I am easing back into the podcast and the garden as well.

I recently chatted with the two guys Travis and John of Sol Soils. March is the perfect time to begin transplanting plants that need more rooting space. Listen in to see why Sol Soils might be a resource to consider trying. Precious was pulling me as she shared how exciting it is to try a new product for our indoor jungle - Thank goodness there was no squeaky toy nearby.

The world has changed, my life has changed, the garden has changed and there is so much to see, do, and chat about. Why not pour a cup of tea and join me?

Happy Mothers Day !

Master Gardeners are everywhere! Planting seeds of wisdom along the way. Tea is something to be celebrated. Growing a tea garden is easy and there are a few new plants which can be used for tea, that is worth investigating. Adding a native plant should be on everyone's mind this year - consider it!

Believing in the Garden

Believing in the Garden

Change in the garden will happen. Plants will die, lighting will change, and Mother Nature will certainly have her way. After a period of mourning, we adapt. It's simply life. However, there is always something left behind that gives us hope.
Believing in the garden is simply an act of survival.

Snow, Faux Spring and The Garden Electric

Snow, Faux Spring and The Garden Electric

Snow, crocus, daffodils, and more. Spring has been plugged in and I can feel the electricity of the season. I had the honor of speaking with the Creative Director of The Philadelphia Flower Show, Seth Pearsoll. As you know, it doesn't take much for me to get excited about anything flower related. After speaking with Seth, I am really plugged in and ready for The Philadelphia Flower Show.  I hope you attend this year as it is back indoors with a new design and more fun!

I am speaking at a private event for the Charlotte Garden Club this week about gardening in urban environments. You can garden in any size space you have.

I am also speaking at Wing Haven I am pinching myself). I have wanted to visit this garden for quite a while and now I AM SPEAKING THERE.  My topic - The Garden is the Elixir We Need. With so much happening in the world today, the garden touches all of our senses and is often a place of healing.

Gathering, Gleaning, and Grateful

The garden invokes conversation when we gather. If we listen, we can glean how the garden finds us and how grateful we are. I am grateful when others share their garden experience. I am also ready to explore more gardens and garden experiences along the way.

We will begin to focus on people, places, and plants to keep the interest going.I hope you continue to join me. There will also be small group workshops - stay tuned. The silence has been for a reason!

Episode 8 - Valerie Crisostomo, Black Girl Florists - Finding Comfort In Community

Episode 8 - Valerie Crisostomo, Black Girl Florists - Finding Comfort In Community

There is an organization specifically focused on Black women who are in floristry. It provides space to grow their businesses, increase their skill set, and collaborate. Black Girl Florists, founded by Valerie Crisostomo, is based in Atlanta. The Board of Directors has members from around the country. This year, Black Girl Florists is hosting its first conference. March 25 - 27th the Westin Peachtree Plaza Hotel will provide a place for anyone who loves flowers and is interested in supporting Black women in floristry.

Black Flora has arrived. This book means so much to me. Long overdue, the complied stories of choices made, healing, and simply pivoting in place is a gift to my community. Seeing others who look like you and are enjoying what they do can be quite meaningful. As the journey continues, I have found many other Black entrepreneurs that are floral farmers, florists, events specialists, and more. It is not hard to take the additional step and seek out a small Black flower farmer and support them. Taking a longer look and identifying a Black florist to use at any event would help sustain a small budding business. Black Flora has opened my eyes as an author and future flower farmer, to simply imagine the possibilities and allow nothing to get in my way.

You can order Black Flora here. I am proud of the diverse communities that will benefit from this book, as well as the other books that enlighten all of us to embrace diversity, equity, and inclusion in all walks of life.

I also co-authored another book, The Urban  Garden - 101 Ways to Grow Food and Beauty in the City. Kathy Jentz and I compiled the concepts we have seen or experienced in our collective years of gardening in urban settings. We are grateful to offer tips to inspire or at least cause you to think about the possibilities of beautifying your space. The garden is ever-evolving, which keeps it interesting. As we celebrate Women's History month, consider supporting two local women who love to share the joys of gardening. As a native Washingtonian, I am happy that most of these ideas can be utilized from the inner city to the suburban areas. Urban gardens are everywhere, this book is a great tool for any gardener. Interested in a journey to see small urban gardens? Consider meeting me and Mrs. Know It All in Buffalo! We are planning a garden experience in Buffalo, New York for the 2022 Buffalo Garden Walk. If you are in the DMV - Meet me there! We have a talented tour guide, Sally Cunningham who is taking care of all the details for this small group garden experience. Episode 4 - Garden Clubs, Friendship, and Ethel Day with Abra Lee

When Black women gather, there is bound to be some fun and giggles. With Abra Lee, there is a bond that allows us to know we are doing what we do for a reason. As we unearth some lesser-known horticultural truths as it pertains to African Americans in horticulture, we are essentially sowing seeds to educate and inspire. Horticulture is a field that we know and it offers endless opportunities for anyone - even minority youth - to excel. As I always say, #wegrowmorethancollards and we really do. You can find out more about Abra by clicking here. While we look forward to her book, we know that being a full-time caretaker for her mom is her priority at the moment.

Episode 2 - The Healthy Garden with Mary-Kate Mackey

As garden communicators, we meet a lot of like-minded people along the way. Some of those very people often are on a similar road and it takes reaching out to know that you are not alone. It has been like that for Mary Kate and myself. Co-authoring a book and have to buckle down and make it happen.

The book, The Healthy Garden - Simple Steps for a Greener World by Kathleen Brenzel and Mary Kate Mackey shares diverse perspectives of how we can enhance how we garden. Mary-Kate is originally from the Mid-Atlantic, however, she now resides in Oregon and she writes for Hartley Botanic.

Her column - Rooting for You - covers many topics from roses to extreme container gardening and more.

Episode 50 - Digging and Delighted with Carol Michel

Episode 50 - Digging and Delighted with Carol Michel

Need a reason to laugh? Might I suggest reading the work of an author by the name of Carol J. Michel? A fellow garden writer with a mid-western sense of humor that allows one to think all while giggling as you realize it simply makes sense. You can find other wonderful books by Carol on her website, https://caroljmichel.com/. As Carol promised, a copy of The Christmas Cottontail arrived in the mail and I cannot wait to read it to listeners everywhere! Stay tuned!!

In the meantime, practice saying Thank you to those who have sown seeds of joy as you continue on your garden journey. Encouraging reconnecting with the earth is a beautiful act of kindness. It is one of the best gifts to share with someone who is simply thinking about gardening as a hobby or even a profession.

Thank you for continuing to follow me - even after a hiatus as I wrote two books in 2021. Available for preorder now is The Urban Garden - 101 Ways to Grow Food and Beauty in the City. A collaboration between myself and Kathy Jentz where we share ideas and information to help gardeners enjoy their urban gardens.

My second book, Black Flora is a work of love and respect for flower farmers, florists, and floral designers who just happen to be Black. There is something about how we are familiar with this earth of urs and how #wegrowmorthancollards. More about this book soon.

I ask that you continue to follow me:

Happy Thanksgiving!!

Happy Thanksgiving!!

It has been quite the year. Writing a book -two books - was a lot harder than I thought. However, as I finish my second book, I would be remiss to not say Thank you for the opportunities. Thank you Quarto Books for supporting a book written by Kathy Jentz and myself. Our book is, The Urban Garden: 101 Ways to Grow Food and Beauty In The City. This book shares our experiences and ideas about making the most of your garden.  You can pre-order this book for gifting, as it is not available until Spring 2022.

My second book, Black Flora, will also be available in the Spring of 2022. It will introduce you to people who share their passion for flowers from growers to floral designers...and they just happen to be Black. I found such joy in meeting the unknown and well-known members of the flower-loving family that know the meaning of having flowers in your world. More about that later.

Today I am simply Thankful and wanted to share my joy, as I return to the airways!

Happy Thanksgiving!

Around this time of the season, we are enjoying the green - yet waiting for autumn. The rain or lack thereof allows us to notice what flowers are the true soldiers of the garden with or without rain. I chose the poem "The Source" by Isla Paschal Richardson, as it speaks to what many gardens share with us right now.

Jamaica Kincaid is an author whose writings are a part of my book family. One of my favorites is My Garden (Book). The excerpt I read truly struck a cord and tugged at my heartstrings. Certain authors really help center my thoughts.

Kathy Jentz, Washington Gardener Magazine, and I co-authored a book that is available for pre-sale ordering. The book, The Urban Garden: 101 Ways to Grow Food and Beauty In the City has truly been a labor of love and quite the learning experience. I hope those who read it find useful ideas to incorporate into their small to average space gardens.

If you find passion in a favored flower, consider joining a plant society or even a garden club. Visit places that will feed this passion because we only go around this way one time...as far as I know.

If you love other Victorian plants, a book I reviewed and recommend is All About Flowers, by Thomas J. Mickey. Here is the review from my blog

The poem shared is from The World Will Follow Joy by Alice Walker - the poem " This Human Journey". I love the writing of Alice Walker..it feeds my soul.
