Ep. 129 Dan Presencer (Moar Guitars)

Ep. 129 Dan Presencer (Moar Guitars)

Dan Presencer  of Moar Guitars is building some of the most elegant guitars you'll find in the world, as far as I'm concerned, and I was very happy to get the opportunity to catch him with a little time over a recent weekend to tell me a bit about his history, what he's up to now, and what he sees himself doing in the future, possibly. If you've not seen his guitars you should do yourself a favor and go check them out at the link below. Our guest this episode is Anthony Cartinella of Black 35 Guitars out of Red Bank NJ. Anthony is a music teacher and a former drum company operator/owner and has poured tons of energy into Black 35 since starting in 2015. Recently he began building pedal boards featuring similar distressed appearances similar to his guitars and they are handsome bits of kit! Go check them out at his website and order your own. I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did!

This episode features my conversation with Keith Nelson, former guitarist and founding member of Buckcherry. Keith shares his story of diligence in the music world as we catch up and talk about his going from working at Guitar Center to having a platinum selling album and owning '59 Bursts. As of late Keith has been working with a variety of bands and artists producing and cowriting a number of songs out of his studio in LA. Need some help from a very capable and talented writer? Hit him up!  I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did. Thanks for listening!

Ep. 126 Sam Bam Koltun (Faster Pussycat/Budderside/Dorothy)

Our guest this episode is Sam Bam Koltun of Faster Pussycat, Budderside, and most recently Dorothy. Starting at an early age and encouraged by the Rockstar INXS reality tv show he picked up the guitar and hasn't rested since, moving to LA to attend Musicians Institute at 18 and staying in Hollywood after graduating. I had a great time hearing about what an encouraging environment he grew up in and hope that his story through this conversation might encourage anyone listening to nurture creative interests in their own kids. Thank you so much for listening and for your continued support!

Ep. 125 Peter Holmström (The Dandy Warhols)

Ep. 125 Peter Holmström (The Dandy Warhols)

Our conversation this episode is with Peter Holmstrom of Portland, Oregon's The Dandy Warhols. Peter is a super cool and mellow fella and I enjoyed getting to know him in this brief first meeting. We have a mutual love of Koll guitars, clearly, and he owns one of the coolest Koll I've seen, the only baritone I've seen baring the name Koll. I hope you enjoy the conversation. We did have some tech glitches so please be patient. Thanks for listening and for your continued support.

Ep. 124 : Wanz

Ep. 124 : Wanz

Our guest on this episode is Wanz who most notably was featured on Macklemore and Ryan Lewis' break out hit Thrift Shop, was featured in the song's video, and subsequently toured around the world for a few years on the back of the success of that song. Wanz has such a cool story and his willingness to say yes is a testament to what can happen when you do just that. Check out his latest video The Captain on YOUTUBE HERE and check out his other music on Soundcloud! Thanks for listening and for your continued support.

Ep. 123 Ian Moore

Ep. 123 Ian Moore

Our guest on this episode is Vashon Island by way of Austin guitar hero, Ian Moore. Ian's story is really interesting to me and I had such a great time speaking with him and learning about growing up in Austin TX around many legends of guitar music. Currently Ian is focused on getting this year's SMASH concert in order and prepping to do some more live streams, including one on Facebook Live on November 5, 2020 at 6pm (PST). Go get an eyeball on Ian and get your mind off of politics for a moment. I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did. Thank you for listening and for your continued support!

Ep. 122 Danny Newcomb (Danny Newcomb & The Sugarmakers/Goodness/The Rockfords/Shadow)

Ep. 122 Danny Newcomb (Danny Newcomb & The Sugarmakers/Goodness/The Rockfords/Shadow)

Our guest this episode is long-time Seattle guitar fixture Danny Newcomb. Danny has primarily been known for playing lead guitar in rock bands since his early teens, playing alongside Mike McCready and the brothers Friel, but for the last 5+ years Danny has been putting out about an album per year of killer, roots/Americana, song-forward guitar music and fronting his own band. In 2020 he released a mostly acoustic album called Mackerel Sky (which I forgot to ask him about the title/song) that shows off his songwriting chops and voice in a more exposed way than ever before. I definitely recommend checking it out, along with his entire back catalog of bands and solo albums. We for sure talked about a LOT more than music, including the farming he does on Vashon Island near Seattle. Thank you so much for listening and for your continued support!

Ep. 121 : Billy Gould (Faith No More)

Ep. 121 : Billy Gould (Faith No More)

My guest on this episode is Bill Gould of Faith No More. This guy is largely responsible for my taste for the left-of-center music, now that I think back on it (after having this conversation) and I had such a great time speaking with him and learning about his early years in music and development, stories along the way, and what he's up to as of late. Please go check out his newest releases on the KoolArrow record label including Talking Book II (one of his own co-creations) and if you have a taste for fancy and exotic liquor keep your eyes peeled for his latest venture, importing Yebiga which is a Balkan Rakija. I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did. Thank you for listening and for your continued support!

Our guest this episode is Katie Cole, Australian musician relocated to Nashville by way of LA. She's an Americana singer and songwriter as well as a Smashing Pumpkins contributor and former Glen Campbell side-person. Currently in the pandemic she is performing $1 live stream shows with fun themes and runs a great YouTube channel that you should go visit. She released a new single, Hands Tied, the day after this conversation was recorded and as of our publish date its been out just a few days. Go give a listen here! Ep. 119 Kristian Bush (Sugarland/Billy Pilgrim/Dark Water)

Ep. 119 Kristian Bush (Sugarland/Billy Pilgrim/Dark Water)

Our guest this episode is Kristian Bush, one half of the Grammy winning country duo, Sugarland. Kristian was such a great hang and a fun story teller. 2020 has seen Kristian working on what he's best known for as well as re-releasing the long-though lost album by his 90s band, Billy Pilgrim. And, his band Dark Water along with his younger brother Brandon,  has been releasing and working on new material over the last year. He recently sang My Prerogative in a Couch Riffs performance video, as well. We had a great time speaking with him and hope that you enjoy this conversation as much as we did. We were cut a little short by a fire call, unfortunately.

Ep. 118 : Nels Cline (Wilco/Nels Cline Singers)

Ep. 118 : Nels Cline (Wilco/Nels Cline Singers)

Our guest on this episode is the incredible Nels Cline. As a longtime fan of Nels, he was listed among the first names on the wishlist I created when this podcast began. Our good friends at Fretboard Journal introduced us and this episode was happening! Over the years I was too intimidated to speak with Nels when I was within arm's length, even. It turns out he's one of the easiest folks you could ever hope to speak with. The Nels Cline Singers have a new album coming out (PREORDER HERE) which I have ordered and highly recommend you do, too. I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did. Thank you for listening and for your continued support!

Ep. 117 : David Knudson (Minus The Bear/Botch)

Ep. 117 : David Knudson (Minus The Bear/Botch)

Our guest this episode is David Knudson, former guitarist of Minus the Bear and the now legendary Tacoma band, Botch. David has one of the most intense, unique, and identifiable guitar styles around and is known for his extensive use of the Line 6 DL4 delay pedal to create and trigger loops and samples live during shows. But, he's certainly not one to use effects as a crutch. David is a monster player and I'm very much looking forward to hearing the solo album that he is currently working on. I thoroughly enjoyed this conversation, our first ever, and I hope you do, too! Thanks for listening and for your continued support.

Ep. 116 : Clint Lowery (Sevendust)

Ep. 116 : Clint Lowery (Sevendust)

Our guest this episode is Clint Lowery of Sevendust. You know, sometimes you speak with someone for the first time ever and you have such a good time that you can't believe that you haven't ever met before. That's essentially the story of this podcast episode. Clint and I fired off immediately about Jake E. Lee and it just kept on rolling on talking guitars and music, growing up poor, and being sober today among many topics. Clint released an album, God Bless The Renegades, AND an EP, Grief & Distance, in 2020 already and Sevendust is releasing a new album 10/23/20. They'll be live streaming a record release show that day and you can buy tix to enjoy that performance HERE. I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did!

Ep. 115 : Zuri Appleby (Lizzo/Adam Lambert/Nick Jonas)

My guest this episode is bassist Zuri Appleby, a massive talent from Buffalo NY and currently living in LA. I thoroughly enjoyed connecting on our mutual experience of being Marine veterans and musicians and her perspective and experience was great to learn about. She is an incredible bassist and is currently offering online bass lessons. Click this link to get in touch with her. I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did! Ep. 114 : Jack O'Shea (Bayside)

Our guest on this episode is Jack O’Shea, lead guitarist of the NY Punk band Bayside. I was introduced to him by a couple of friends who toured with him way back in the day but had never spoke before this conversation. What a crazy story he has and what a good time I had speaking with him. Even if you enjoy this conversation half as much as I did you’re going to love it!

Ep. 113: Dweezil Zappa

Ep. 113: Dweezil Zappa

Our guest on this episode of Couch Riffs podcast is Dweezil Zappa. Dweezil has kept Frank Zappa's music alive on stage for the last 14 years or so with Zappa Plays Zappa, celebrating different eras of Frank's catalog and absolutely nailing the spirit of his father's intensely original music and distinct guitar style. On the day that this podcast episode will publish Dweezil will launch a new web platform called Reward Music which enables artists to connect more directly with fans and supporters without the taxing middleman model that has historically hindered musicians' ability to earn a sustainable and livable wage. This episode features Kyle Shutt, the mighty guitarist of Texan crushers The Sword. Kyle is a down to earth guy who humbly bounces back and forth from the biggest stages on earth to a working family guy life in Austin, TX. He's currently working on funding a book project called, Written In Stoned, at Kickstarter and PLEASE GO VISIT THAT LINK HERE. The project sounds super fun and amazing. Ep. 110 : Dave Rude (Tesla)

This episode features our friend and special guest Dave Rude who, after 14 years, is still the new guy in Tesla. A phenomenal guitarist and sweet guy, he's an easy hang a very casual conversationalist. He was also one of the earliest guests on the first version of what Couch Riffs used to exist as and absolutely shredded the Slash solo on Always On The Run by Lenny Kravitz. Dave Rude teaches guitar lessons online and if you're interested in speaking to him about distance learning with him you can reach him HERE. I hope you enjoy this conversation as much I did. Ep. 108 : Brian Nutter (Nutter Guitars / Keith Urban)

Our guest this episode is Brian Nutter, former first-call Nashville studio and touring ace guitar player who most notably worked with Keith Urban for years. He's also toured with Dierks Bentley, Taylor Swift, and a list longer than my house improvements to-do list. These days Brian is building Nutter Guitars in his shop outside of Nashville and teaching building skills at the Musician's Institute Guitar Craft Academy, an accredited luthier training school. 2020 has been difficult for most all of us but Brian has had a particularly rough road and he chronicles his near-death experience with a sunflower seed shell in our conversation. He's on the mend now and we're glad to see him back in action. I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did. Thank you for listening and for your continued support!

Ep. 104 : Doug Kauer of Kauer Guitars

Our guest for this episode is Doug Kauer of Kauer Guitars out of Sacramento CA. Doug's embrace of technology to help him create and build consistent and great guitars is something we admire greatly at Couch Riffs. Did we mention that they're beautiful, too? And, if that wasn't enough Doug has a heart of gold and has done a number of charity guitars this year during a time when it would be very easy to adopt a more selfish attitude. Thank you Doug! I hope you all enjoy this conversation as much as I enjoyed having it.

Ep. 102 : Paul Gilbert (Racer X/Mr. Big)

Ep. 102 : Paul Gilbert (Racer X/Mr. Big)

Our guest on this episode is the infinitely impressive and equally humble Paul Gilbert. Paul was in to the spotlight at a young age as a hyper-technical shred guitarist, GIT instructor, and leader of Racer X and later Mr Big. Over the years Paul's playing has evolved, matured, and continues to impress players and music fans all over the world. He continues to be a huge inspiration to me and it was a pleasure to host him on the podcast. He is an excellent story teller and I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did! Go check out his online guitar school HERE

Ep. 101 : Kirk Douglas (The Roots)

Ep. 101 : Kirk Douglas (The Roots)

Our guest for this episode is Kirk Douglas of The Roots. Kirk has probably found himself in more extraordinary musical situations than any of our guests before him. In addition to holding down the guitar position in The Roots and on Jimmy Fallon's Late Night Show he released an album last year by the name of Hundred Watt Heart. If you're a fan of nasty guitar riffs and tones, Gibson's through Marshalls, and vocals that meet eye to eye with outstanding guitar performances you should check this album out. We talked about the musicians that have influenced him throughout his career, how he landed in The Roots, his connection to Vernon Reid, and of course the infamous Prince incident. I couldn't help myself, we were already half way there in natural conversation! I hope you enjoy this conversation as much I did.

If you like the Couch Riffs podcast and/or our videos please let the world know by leaving a 5-star rating and positive review for us! It helps us stay in the algorithm and get recommended to other folks to listen. And, that is what allows us to continue to get great guests for you. Ep. 99 : Ben Weinman (Dillinger Escape Plan/Suicidal Tendencies/Giraffe Tongue Orchestra/Party Smasher Inc)

Our guest this episode is Ben Weinman, founding member and leader of the incredible but defunct band The Dillinger Escape Plan. As of late he has been managing artists, raising a family, and managing a farm of rescue animals in rural New Jersey. A TON of energy goes in to maintaining this rescue and I would recommend checking out a little about that HERE. You can support the efforts of this rescue, as well. I love this conversation and we covered a lot of things parallel to lives in music. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!

Our guest for this episode is the multi-instrumentalist member of The Decemberists, Chris Funk. Chris knows his way around a studio and has recorded and produced albums by Red Fang, The Builders and The Butchers, and Langhorne Slim and also puts his dobro talents to good use in Black Prairie, an eclectic and dreamy band with a blend of bluegrass, klezmer, and soundtrack-oriented vibes. Ep. 96 : Barrett Jones (Producer/Musician)

Ep. 96 : Barrett Jones (Producer/Musician)

Our guest on this episode is Barrett Jones, owner and operator of Laundry Room Studio. Barrett has been involved in some of the most important recordings you've heard! AND, he's got a really interesting history going all the way back to DC in his teens, recording bands out of his parents' home and later group houses where he lived. From the very word go he was recording some noteworthy and historically significant bands and he continues to do that as well as produce a video series, Landry Room Live, which broadcasts live and also posts to his YouTube channel post-performance. Go check them out! They're great.

Ep. 95 : Myles Kennedy (Alter Bridge/Slash & The Conspirators/Mayfield 4)

Ep. 95 : Myles Kennedy (Alter Bridge/Slash & The Conspirators/Mayfield 4)

Our guest this episode is the incredibly multi-talented Myles Kennedy (Slash feat. Myles Kennedy and The Conspirators, Alter Bridge, The Mayfield 4). This is one of the sweetest, most genuine folks you'll meet and he has a true passion for music that is clear and evident in this conversation. It has been a pleasure for me to get to know him a little over the years but this conversation was certainly the longest that I've had with him and the most deep and varied. I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did. Thank you so much for listening and for your continued support!

Ep. 93 : Don Gunn (Drummer/Studio Engineer/Producer/Mixer)

Ep. 93 : Don Gunn (Drummer/Studio Engineer/Producer/Mixer)

I was very happy to have Don Gunn on the podcast this episode. Don is responsible for a lot of great sounding recordings and mixes (some that we've worked on together, even) including some Couch Riffs performance videos as of late. He's also one of the most entertaining folks to work with in a studio environment and is always down for a laugh. Did I mention he is a great drummer? It shouldn't come as a surprise. Many of my favorite studio folks are drummers. I hope you enjoy our conversation as much as I enjoyed having it! It takes us a little while to get up to speed but there are some pretty golden nuggets sprinkled all throughout!

Ep. 92 : William DuVall of Alice In Chains

Ep. 92 : William DuVall of Alice In Chains

This episode features my guest William DuVall, most famously known as the lead singer of Alice in Chains but who had a long musical career leading up to that eventual position. We cover a ton of William's punk roots very candidly in this episode and I had an absolute Bl'ast (heh, heh) hearing him tell some great stories. There is a tiny bit of audio drop in this episode when William leaves home and gets in his car but it passes pretty quickly and painlessly. Thanks as always for listening and for your continued support!

Ep. 91 : Bob Balch (Fu Manchu, Big Scenic Nowhere, Play This Riff)

Ep. 91 : Bob Balch (Fu Manchu, Big Scenic Nowhere, Play This Riff)

My guest on this episode is Bob Balch of the mighty Fu Manchu. This band came on my radar so many years ago and I had the pleasure of opening for them and seeing them on a few occasions. This band, and Bob, always deliver the goods! Be sure to check out one or all of Bob's other projects which include his online teaching website PlayThisRiffs.com, his online lessons, and Big Scenic Nowhere. I hope you enjoy this episode as much I enjoyed having the conversation!

Ep. 90 : Ace Von Johnson (LA Guns/Faster Pussycat/US Bombs/Murphy's Law)

My guest on this episode has had a number of killer gigs over the last 3 decades across all kinds of punk and rock bands including Murphy's Law, Faster Pussycat, US Bombs, and most recently LA Guns. As all Couch Riffs podcast episodes go we covered a TON of ground in this candid conversation about life, music, horror movies, dogs, and even managed to talk about guitars a little bit. I hope you enjoy this as much as I did!

Ep. 89 : Kurt Bloch (The Fastbacks, The Minus 5)

Ep. 89 : Kurt Bloch (The Fastbacks, The Minus 5)

Our guest on Episode 89 is a living legend in Seattle, the Pacific Northwest, and beyond. Mr Kurt Bloch has been blazing the guitar since the 70s and also happens to have one of the craziest guitar collections around Seattle. This conversation was a blast and we covered everything from his deep interest and knowledge of Coronets/Wilshires/Crestwoods to his seeing Van Halen and Judas Priest separately on the same night in 1979. I feel like I could listen to Kurt tell stories for another 3 hours and not even bat an eye. I hope you enjoy this one as much as I did!

Ep. 88 : Brandon Ethridge (pianist/keyboardist, Marc Martel, Rock of Ages, School of Rock)

Ep. 88 : Brandon Ethridge (pianist/keyboardist, Marc Martel, Rock of Ages, School of Rock)

This episode features guest Brandon Ethridge who is, unless I'm mistaken, our first pianist/keyboardist. At least, our first with this as their primary instrument. Brandon has had such an interesting path to becoming a rock musician and such a great career once he was on that path. He's currently in Wichita KS rehabbing a home he bought during the pandemic gig-drought and will be appearing in a Couch Riffs video in the VERY near future. I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did.

Ep. 87 : Dennis Leeflang (Drummer/Engineer)

Ep. 87 : Dennis Leeflang (Drummer/Engineer)

Dennis Leeflang is a Dutch drummer living in the states now for many years first in NY and now LA. We met 10 or so years ago in Seattle while he was touring with Ron "Bumblefoot" Thal and stayed in touch through social media. Dennis is another resourceful musician who has found a way to make Covid-era life actually work for him by continuing to record drums for many folks who are using their time effectively. I admire drummers who indulge this pursuit more than other musicians perhaps because tracking drums is a much more nuanced thing than any other instrument. Anyway, he's great at it and if you're not following him and hitting him up to do work for your recordings you're really missing out. I hope you enjoy our conversation as much as I did!

Ep. 86 : Steve Hall (Investor/Musician/Film Producer)

Ep. 86 : Steve Hall (Investor/Musician/Film Producer)

Every time I think I can't possibly enjoy doing this podcast more something like this episode happens. My guest is Steve Hall who has a very different day job than most musicians. He's venture capital investor and has spent many years managing the financial investments of Paul Allen. In the last few years Steve has relaxed himself some and started pursue some more creative ventures like partnering in McSwain Guitars, consulting for Magnatone Amplifiers, and most recently producing films. Not bad, Steve. Not bad. I had a great time talking with him and, even though I know he'll always be the smartest guy in the room (certainly if I'm in that room with him), he has such a down to earth way of talking things out. I hope you enjoy this as much as I did.

Ep. 85 : Dejha (Solo Artist, The Union Gospel, The Rotten Apples)

Ep. 85 : Dejha (Solo Artist, The Union Gospel, The Rotten Apples)

My guest this episode is Dejha who possesses one of my absolute favorite singing voices. After being a fan and knowing each other for years, playing together here and there, we started co-writing songs at a time when we lived completely across the country from one another which is very similar to how folks are making music during the pandemic isolation now. Dejha has fronted and led many bands that I have loved over the years and The Union Gospel project is selfishly my favorite. The Union Gospel album was released digitally in 2019 and had a vinyl release in early 2020. You can stream it here and purchase the LP here

Ep. 84 : Toby Fresh aka DV One of Rock Steady Crew

Ep. 84 : Toby Fresh aka DV One of Rock Steady Crew

Toby Fresh, aka DV One, is a member of the Rock Steady Crew and an old-school b-boy and fixture in the Seattle hip hop scene, though he resides in Hawaii now. We met while we both had gigs at a casino north of Seattle and after a conversation we decided we'd trade guitar lessons for DJ lessons. Toby is also a very active jiu jitsu and fight trainer and the former DJ for the Seattle Seahawks which earned him a Super Bowl ring (almost two, you know......). I had a great time catching up with him and I hope you enjoy listening to this conversation as much as I did. Thanks for listening and for your continued support!

Ep. 83 : Mike Doughty (Soul Coughing)

Mike Doughty is an accomplished singer and songwriter with nearly 20 albums in his catalog. After forming and fronting NYC's Soul Coughing in the 90s Mike went on to carve out his own way as a solo artist in a completely new and uncharted environment where he continues to this day. Patreon contributors play a huge role in Mike's current world and he currently maintains and contributes to a supportive Patreon fanbase while he's not touring. He currently lives and creates out of Memphis TN.

Ep. 82 : Mike Gurnari (Madball)

Our guest on this episode is Mike Gurnari of the legendary NYHC band, Madball. Mike has been with the band for just over 2 years as of the publishing of this podcast and has a very simple and immediate story of how that came to be. I thoroughly enjoyed talking with him about playing, tattoo shop life, and guitars. I hope you enjoy this episode as much as I enjoyed having it.

Ep. 81 : Wayne Kramer (MC5)

Ep. 81 : Wayne Kramer (MC5)

Our guest on this episode is the legendary Wayne Kramer of MC5. But, there is much more to Wayne's story than simply being the guitarist and leader of one of the most important bands of all time. I cheated some before this conversation and listened to Wayne narrate the audio book recording of his 2018 published, The Hard Stuff. I highly recommend picking up the book and/or listening to him personally read his story. It is wonderful. And, I am very much looking forward to the project that Wayne hints at coming up for his next project. I hope you enjoy this as much as I did!

Ep. 80 : Blag Dahlia (The Dwarves)

Ep. 80 : Blag Dahlia (The Dwarves)

Blag Dahlia, aka Blag The Ripper, is the leader of legendary punk band The Dwarves who have been pushing boundaries and melting brains since the mid-80s. Blag, it turns out, is quite well spoken which I was expecting. I wasn't really expecting him to be so nice, honestly. Funny, sure. But, I had a great time learning about some of his and the Dwarves' history and his plans for.a new Blag album. And, potentially got a commitment in a Couch Riffs video! I hope you enjoy this episode. It was a pleasure speaking with Blag.

If you're enjoying Couch Riffs and/or our videos please leave a rating and review wherever you listen in. And, you can become a pledge supporter of Couch Riffs for as little as .99/month.
