Season 9: Episode 08: Calum Franklin
I am overjoyed to have Calum Franklin on this podcast this week! For those not in the food world, you may not know him by name but you may have been lucky to have tried his food – particularly, his pies!! Coined as the King of Pies by Jamie Oliver, Calum is the ex-executive chef of Holborn Dining Rooms at the Rosewood Hotel in London, as well as the man who started up The Pie Room; an entire concept totally dedicated to pie making; hot, steaming, delicious pockets of meat and veg and pastry.
He has since left The Pie Room and is out in the big wide world planning some exciting new projects, coming soon.

Season 9: Episode 06: Anna Friel & Gracie Friel *100th Special Episode!!*
Today calls for a celebration! Today marks the 100th episode!!!! I cannot believe we have some so far!
It only felt right to get a fabulous guest, or shall I say, two guests, on to commemorate such a milestone. And so, this week I welcome the fabulous and gorgeous Anna Friel and her daughter Gracie. This is my first mother-daughter duo; they’re super close just like my mum and I and so it felt right to get these wonderful ladies on!
Anna has been acting since the age of 13 and became a household name when she appeared in Brookside. Since then she has gone on to work across film, TV, theatre and won even won an Emmy for her role in Marcella. She’s the real epitome of the brilliant British talent we have grown to love over the years, and being joined by her 17 year old daughter made the episode even more special. Gracie has just finished school and is about to embark on adulthood.
We cover it all; food and catering on set, Anna’s favourite home comforts, why ketchup should be banned and Gracie’s growing interest in nutrition and eating well. We also bond over my favourite snack of all time – the humble crisps (just wait until you hear Anna’s answer)!!

This week I have a true Italian food maestro, Gennaro Contaldo. He’s been on our screens, pairing up with his late, dear friend and another Italian food leader, Antonio Carluccio. He’s the man who taught Jamie Oliver the secret of Italian cooking and he’s the author of several cookbooks and the face of many a TV show.
His new cookbook, out now, Gennaro’s Cucina, focuses on the heart and soul of Italian cookery; the basics, the simple yet classic dishes, and really highlights food waste and how to cook with all ingredients and all parts of the fruit, veg, meat and fish.

This week, New York is in the house!!! I have the King of the Slurp, Ivan Orkin, over to chat all things ramen, Japan, Chef’s Table and what a proper noodle slurp actually is.
Ivan found himself in Japan, as a New Yorker and did the thing most of us wouldn’t; he went and opened a ramen joint in Tokyo. Ramen and especially noodles are a Japanese delicacy. I wanted to find out the challenges he faced, the reception he received and how it overcame judgement to eventually win the locals over.
We touch on his time on Chef’s Table, which allowed him to become a global face of ramen and the plans he has for the future.

I am finally joined by Hollywood royalty!! It only took 8 seasons to get there! Paul Feig popped over for a chat, and a couple cocktails to talk all about directing Bridesmaids (my fav film ever!), what the life of a director is really like and why he prefers his martinis stirred NOT shaken.
Paul Feig has been a main player in the entertainment industry for years, and has put his hand to the likes of the aforementioned film, the Ghostbusters remake, The Heat, Spy and Freaks and Geeks to name but a few. He is also a master cocktail maker and recently released his first cocktail book; Paul Feig’s Cocktail Time.

It was so interesting getting into the mind of a chef; how she approaches her work, how she supports her staff and the food she creates.
I was incredibly lucky to get to her restaurant, Core, after filming this episode and I can honestly tell you it was one of the most memorable and delicious food experiences of my entire life. The woman is a maestro and I am a huge fan!

Season 7: Episode 12: Susan Young

I felt like after 7 seasons it was time to introduce the queen in my life, my best friend, my “momager”, my disco diva!
Mum delves into her incredible childhood between Iran, Norfolk and London and how it set her up for life. She goes back to when her mother met her Iranian father at a dance in the 1950s in England, and subsequently moved back to Iran where my mother became quite ill. She was brought back to the UK, had her identity changed and didn’t meet her real father until she was 17!
She reminisces about coming down to London aged 18 to become a Bunny Girl at the original Playboy Club in the 70s, meeting her first Iranian boyfriend and embarking on a career in the antiques and jewellery business.
We cover her whole life in food; how she was taught to make Iranian food, where her ethos comes from when thinking about cooking and making delicious meals. We reminisce about the best dishes of my childhood, her gourmet packed lunches and what makes a great home cook.
I love my mum so much, and she really is the foundation to my knowledge of food, taste, flavour and cooking. I owe so much to her, particularly my appreciation of eating. And for that, I will be forever grateful.

Season 7: Episode 11: Chris Baber
I met Chris Baber over food - of course - at an amazing party at Nobu full of the best canapes! We positioned ourselves right by the kitchen doors – in the firing line, and now it was time to get him over for a chat!
Chris reminisces being a child cooking in Northumberland with his granddad; he was influenced by the greats like Ainsley, Gordon and Rick! He went on to win a cooking competition on the BBC and went to work under Atul Kochhar, the Michelin starred chef in London. He talks about being in a professional kitchen from wearing chef’s whites to prepping food and serving beautiful dishes.
Chris really wanted to create a community showcasing his easy and accessible recipes. He wanted to make people comfortable in the kitchen. And we bond over the thinking that food doesn’t need to be complicated. We’re inundated with such a plethora of recipes, particularly on social media, that we have lost the essence of simple home cooking.
His debut cookbook, Easy, demonstrates just how simple but delicious food can be!

I’ve followed Sabrina Ghayour’s career for a while now, and so it was a huge pleasure to finally have her on the podcast.
She’s just launched her new cookbook, Persiana Everyday, which was a tough process to write as she wrote it through lockdown, whilst dealing with all the things complexities that have come with the last 2 years. It was also challenging to actually write down the recipes she was creating from her head, and working out measurements but she focuses on simple and delicious recipes that are quick in this book and I can tell you it’s a must buy!
She’s not the biggest fan of podcasts so it’s a real honour for her to entrust me with her words and time! She opened up about her childhood and coming to the UK at a young age during the Iranian Revolution and explains that she actually comes from a family of women who did not cook!
We dissectPersian food and it’s fundamental flavours and dishes. The influences of the cuisine come from all over to make a unique, delicious and aromatic taste. We talk about the political topic of Tahdig – the crispy rice created in a Persian rice cooker. It can get very tense at the dinner table; people fight over it!

Clodagh reminisces about her idyllic childhood in Ireland running around on the family farm, picking potatoes and we bond over eating raw pastry and pasta as kids – I suggest you don’t try this at home!
She dissects how she writes a cookbook, how she creates recipes, the recipe testing process and shooting the book. I don’t think I’ll look at a cookbook in the same way again!

As the founder of Jo Malone London and Jo Loves, she is the queen of fragrance with her sixth sense of knowing how scents work, and putting different notes together to create some of the best smells in the world.
This was an incredibly open and honest conversation, and at times emotional. It was also thought provoking and a lesson into seeing the world in a different way.

I sat down with one of my childhood culinary heroes (and my dad’s!), Ken Hom. He recorded from his gorgeous house in France, where he splits his time between there and Thailand.
Ken is one of the most celebrated TV chefs of our generation, bringing the flavours of Chinese cooking to our homes. We cover his life in food; how he got into the culinary scene and why he’s still traumatised from his first ever show on the BBC in the 80s!
We both bond over the issues with food waste, how much we love the chilli oil in Chinese restaurants and I think he loves crisps as much as I do – he couldn’t even let me get the whole question out!
He dissects Chinese food and explains the different regions, where he eats Chinese food and how it’s evolved over the years and he tells a great anecdote about cooking for Tina Turner! What a guy Ken is! I can’t wait to meet him in person and share some Chinese food with him (he’s ordering).

What an honour to have Asma Khan on this week’s podcast. The star – and only British and female chef to be featured on Chef’s Table on Netflix! Asma is a leader in the culinary world; speaking up about women in food, putting women in the kitchen and making space for us!

I absolutely loved sitting down with my good friend, Eric Lanlard, the French pâtissier extraordinaire. We recorded from his baking school in South West London, Cake Boy, which is the cake emporium you need to know about!
Growing up in North West France, Eric knew what he wanted to do since he was 5 years old and signed up to his local patisserie to make sure he was taken on as an apprentice as a teenager.
He regales incredible anecdotes from his time working for the French Navy on the battleships, his time in London with The Roux brothers, and he explains the intricacies of patisserie and the scientific nature of baking.
Eric is a true artist, his cakes and bakes are not just visually pleasing, but sensational in taste and texture. He really is the king of baking!

Season 7: Episode 03: Shiza Shahid
It was a pleasure to host Shiza Shahid at my home, the co-founder and owner of Our Place – the cookware brand taking the world by storm.
But Our Place is a mere fraction of what this incredible woman stands for. She also co-founded the Malala Fund in 2013, and has fought for women’s rights and the right for education for young girls since she was a teenager.
She is completely in line with my ethos when it comes to food and sharing moments together; the table is for everyone, regardless of who you are or where you’re from.
We talk about her childhood growing up in Pakistan during a time where it was becoming very politically turbulent and she opens up about her friendship with Malala and how they have worked together to create and change in the world.
Our Place is a beautiful brand that isn’t just aesthetically pleasing, but stands for community and inclusion and Shiza’s path has only just begun. Mark my words; she’s going to make a serious impact on this world!

Season 7: Episode 01: Grace Dent
I’M BACKKKK!!!!! And it feels so good! Thank you for sticking around this long! How are we onto Season 7 already?!
I thought I’d treat you all and kick the season off in style, with the sultry tones of Grace Dent, the restaurant critic, broadcaster and author! I have officially given her the title of National Treasure; a name she is beyond excited to receive.
She discusses her show with Ainsley Harriott, Best of Britain by the Sea. They had the best time travelling around the country finding the best seaside resorts, hotels and food; but we do agree it’s difficult to eat fish and chips in London; you have to be by the sea.
Grace eloquently talks about her childhood in Carlisle. It was the world of processed, beige food and we reminisce about her time at More! Magazine… those were the days!
She really does have the best job! She breaks down what makes a great restaurant; the nuances, what she bases her opinions on but admits that she spends most of her time at Pret a Manger! And we love the same sandwich – posh cheddar and pickle!!
We end the chat with the ULTIMATE crisps conversation – we will be friends for life!!! You know what time it is!!

For the month run up to this year’s festival (15-19th June!) I will be sitting down with some of the famous faces of Taste.

I can’t believe we’ve come to the end of Season 6! Thank you again for joining me on this incredible journey, continuously supporting and listening to me. Don’t worry – I’ll be back sooner than you think for another bigger and better season!
To finish things off, I’m joined by Judy Joo, the Korean chef behind shows such as Iron Chef and restaurants JinJuu and Seoul Bird.
She opens up about her childhood in New Jersey, growing up in a Korean household with her mum fermenting kimchi in the family garage and drying chillis on top of the fridge. She discusses the frustration with people trying to understand Korean food, with critics trying to compare it to Thai food in the early days (!) and she explains the difference in chopsticks per each Asian cuisine. My mind is blown!

Season 6: Episode 10: Jack Savoretti
What a charming chap musician Jack Savoretti is! It had been a long time coming but we finally sat down to talk all about his Italian heritage, childhood family dinners and some of his naughty food vices!
He’s currently on tour so we talk all about finally being out there performing live, his new album, Europiana and he opens up about the music industry; the difficulties he overcame, the time he was asked to change his name as it wasn’t “British” enough (!) and he discusses stepping away from the industry.
This conversation felt very full circle to me – I was first introduced to Jack in 2012 when I was taken to his concert in Shepherds Bush – close to where I live now! We end the chat realising we may be soulmates – but you’ll need to listen to find out!!

Season 6: Episode 08: Nobu Matsuhisa
When I started Crazy Sexy Food, I wrote a list of dream guests I’d love to have on. If you’d seen it, you would have laughed and told me “Yeah Right!”.
So, when I got the call a couple weeks ago that Nobu Matsuhisa was in town to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Nobu London Park Lane, and he was doing a select number of interviews and that CSF was in the running I could not believe it!
But here we are. And here I was, in this episode, sitting down with the man himself discussing his life in food, dealing with childhood trauma, setting up his business 50 years ago and his meeting with Robert De Niro.
Nobu is a gentle but very fun man. He was so incredibly open and hospitable; this really has been the greatest honour. He eloquently discussed the hardships in his life, namely when one of his restaurants burnt down and he lost everything. This in turn lead to depression and suicidal thoughts.
He managed to use his inner strength and family support to start again, and here we are, all these years later, and he’s still at the helm of the global empire!
This was an honour of the highest level, and being in Nobu’s presence is something I will never forget.

Crystelle Pereira is the rising star we all need to know about. If you’re an avid GBBO then you’ll know exactly who she is!
Not only is she my first ever GBBO contestant, but she came over for baclava and a glass water (!) and gave me in inside scoop of how the show works, what it’s like to film in secret for 6 weeks and her favourite bakes from the season.

Season 6: Episode 06: Lawrence Okolie
I am FINALLY joined by my first world champion boxer this week! Lawrence Okolie sat down with me just after retaining his WBO Cruiserweight title (well, not literally straight after, but you know what I mean!).
He may have zoomed in from his bed (!), but the champion spoke all about growing up in a Nigerian household and how he STILL doesn’t know how to make jollof rice, his unique success story and his book, Dare to Change Your Life.
He opens up about his relationship with food as a child; he was overweight and bullied and sought comfort in food and we bond over the fact we both used to skive of off school sports.
As an athlete, he explains how he structures his time in the lead up to a fight, sparring with Anthony Joshua and why he decided to become vegan!

This week I have a true showbiz superstar joining me, Mr Martin Kemp! He’s done it all; music, TV, film and even GBBO!
He popped over and talked all about his time in Spandau Ballet, and the huge success they had overnight. He commends his time on Eastenders, where he played bad boy Steve Owen as saving his life after a very traumatic experience with a brain tumour.
The man is still as gorgeous as he was when he first entered the limelight, and is showing no signs of stopping! He discusses how he loves working with his family; namely his son Roman, a successful presenter, and his wife Shirley (who he adores!), who was part of Wham!

Season 6: Episode 04: Marcus Wareing
It was an absolute honour (and somewhat nerve wracking) to have Marcus Wareing join me in my kitchen for a chat this week.
He came in, saw my stew bubbling away on the stove, gave me some lifechanging tips and then sat down with a cuppa and spoke to me all about his life growing up in Southport, his boxing days, and his experience coming to London to work at The Savoy and Le Gavroche.
He discusses the difference between the chefs of his day to present day and how the training has changed, producing a different kind of chef. And we talk all about receiving his first Michelin star at 26!
Marcus released his ninth cookbook last year – Marcus’ Kitchen and has a new TV show starting called Tales from a Kitchen Garden. It’s a new concept for him; all about his place in East Sussex, it’s garden, growing produce and rearing animals and all the bits inbetween!

Season 6: Episode 03: Adjoa Andoh
It had been a long time coming to get this brilliant woman onto the podcast, and we finally did it after months of planning!
Adjoa Andoh has been on our screens and stages for years, and currently plays the incredible Lady Danbury in a little-known show called Bridgerton!
She talks about her wonderful upbringing with a real mixture of food and cuisines being around her English mother and Ghanaian father and she dissects what Ghanaian food is and her memories of it. We also had an interesting conversation about the state of the food and farming industry. How bad cheap food (namely meat) and factory farming is.
She discusses the different mediums of acting and we obviously touch on Bridgerton; it’s global success, Shonda Rhimes and the character of Lady Danbury
I discover the shocking food available on film sets, and she explains how she works around it. But to make a sad story happy, I find out just how much she loves sherry trifle!!

Season 6: Episode 02: Five
What a special episode this was, getting to sit down with one of my favourite childhood boybands, Five! They’re back with a new album after 20 years and I got to chat to them all about it!
The three of them, Scott, Ritchie and Sean, all admitted they’re much healthier than they used to be; in fact, none of them had eaten breakfast as they’re all intermittent fasting!!
We cover everything: Scott’s bizarre food phobias, Ritchie’s childhood nickname and Sean’s love of anything spicy!
They also reflect on the early days of their career, how lonely it was, the crazy world of fame and how food had very little importance!
What a bunch of lovely lads, my younger self was pinching myself during this chat! I even asked them what their favourite Five song was!

I’m back! Season 6 is here!!! I am soooo excited to be back on the airwaves doing what I love. This season is going to be so much fun, I hope you enjoy it as much as I do making it!
I’m joined by ex-NFL star, Jason Bell. We thought we’d honour the biggest sporting event in the world – The Super Bowl – which is played this Sunday and what better way that getting the ex-New York Giants, The Dallas Cowboys and Houston Texans player on to talk all things American Football, the relationship between food and sport, as well as the effect on players mental health.
This was such an interesting, eye opening conversation and I really appreciated Jason’s honesty.
We obviously talk all about the Super Bowl – who he predicts will be in the final, and most importantly – what he eats on Super Bowl Weekend!! It’s serious business!!

Season 5: Episode 11: Francesco Mazzei
I hate goodbyes!! What a season it’s been, thank you so much for continuing to support and listen to the podcast; I can’t tell you how much joy doing all of this brings me.
Before I leave you for a couple months, I sit down with well-known chef and probably one of the most successful Italian imports, Mr Francesco Mazzei.
You may recognise him from his many TV stints, or you may have frequented one of this 3 fabulous restaurants in London.
We recorded this episode from Sartoria in Mayfair a couple months ago and we were visited by his Truffle Pusher before recording so the aroma whilst recording was sublime!
He gave me a delicious tiramisu to eat whilst we recorded and discussed his childhood in Calabria, seasonal cooking, how he made nduja sexy and how he auditions the chefs that want to come and work for him.
I left with one of his homemade chilli jams and a new found respect for regional Italian cooking!
