MOVING TO THAILAND/HOW TO BUILD A PERSONAL BRAND/WHY LATE BLOOMERS WIN
new episode. new gems. esketit. I recorded this a few hours before heading back to chiang mai for the fall. listened to some LIFE CHANGING podcasts this past week and i’m stoked to share the takeaways with y’all. the takeaways and episodes learned this week: Noah Kagan interview -don’t think about how to create a subscription business. think about what you could offer people they’d be excited to pay you money for -keep it simple. how can you test your idea and start making money now? Social Media Marketing World on Personal Branding -find your uniqueness and exploit it for the service of others -find the middle ground. what the world needs you to be vs who you were designed to be -who you seek to serve is who you once were -different is better than better Rich Roll podcast with David Epstein -continue to experiment, you don’t have to only be good at one thing -coaches don’t tell. they help you reflect on your own weaknesses -van gogh died and only sold one painting in his life. his work has now sold over $1 billion going to give this style a shot, if you dig it let me know! you can email me (kia@kiaorion.com) or slide in the DM. i’m @kiaorion everywhere.  thanks for being a part of this process with your boy.

DEALING WITH FEAR/YOUR UNTAPPED SUPERPOWER/GETTING MY ASS KICKED
WHATUP! Your boy is back in action, comin in hot with another episode of the new podcast. I’m bringing you a life update and the top 4 most helpful/interesting things I learned over the last week. The show starts with personal Kia adventures: last week in Vietnam, getting my ass kicked by my trainer, being grateful af, and…writing a book? Then we dive in headfirst. Topics on the episode this week are: 14:25: Some strategies to help with fear/your inner critic 22:28: Your focus is your superpower (and how you fuckin it up) 30:23: Sleep tips from Why we Sleep by Dr. Matthew Walker 32:00: Jack Conte CEO of Patreon on how to execute on decisions. Ideas don’t matter nearly as much as execution. Thank you for tuning in, means more than you know. If you've got any interesting content you want to send my way I'm all ears! LET'S GET IT

One star reviews, grit or quit, and becoming superhuman.
OK y’all. it’s time to switch shit up. i’ve been on a real mission lately to re-evaluate where i’m at in my life and where i’m going. because of this i’ve been learning a LOT. and in order to make the most out of these shows i thought it would be cool to synthesize the top 4 things i learned this last week into one place for you. These are the three interviews I heard this last week that were a game changer: Dr. Joe Dispenza on mindset Tom Bilyeu on Short story long Seth Godin interview going to give this style a shot, if you dig it let me know! you can email me (kia@kiaorion.com) or slide in the DM. i’m @kiaorion everywhere. thanks for being a part of this process with your boy.

WE BACK B*TCHES
ooweeooo! it has been a minute. your boy took a hiatus from the podcast for a bit. but we diving back in. i'm still in SE asia so it won't be as interview based. i recently made the decision to pursue my career as an artist more full time. so this will be an outlet to document that journey. i'm capturing it in video for youtube and figured i'd give folks the option to listen to if they'd rather not have to see my scruffy mug. so i'll be uploading again weekly. it might even take a new direction that i haven't even thought of yet. who knows. life is messy. why not have some fun with it?  alright here goes. i've been posting weekly about the journey but this weeks is especially in depth. . not so much a weekly update as a psychological review. been digging deep lately. questioning my true intentions, long-held beliefs, and doing an overall re-evaluation of where we’re taking this thing. maybe it’s because i’m pushing 30, maybe it’s because being out here has bought me time to think. but working through some shit and felt compelled to share the process with you. still going to be making beats (you already know. if you need music hit the batphone) but switching my focus toward my own joints. think i’ve been working on the beats because it’s much more lucrative and less vulnerable. in this episode i share some of my past failures (we’ll call them lessons) struggling to be an independent artist, and some of the left over residue i’m still working through. there’s a lot to unpack there in terms of identity, but realize the only way to get through that fear is just to do it more. i keep trying to build businesses so that i have time to work on my own tracks. i think i’m guilty of doing that a lot. maybe we all do. “first i’ll do this and THEN i’ll be able to do what i really want”. it’s like...why not just do what you want to do...now? i felt the same about traveling. “i’ll have my career first, retire, and THEN i can go travel”. instead, let’s find a way to engineer this thing so we can cut to the chase. before you know it life happens. and the shit goes hella fast. Ferris Bueller ain’t playin. i realize that i don’t need to build a biz to have the time, because i already have the time. the teaching isn’t going anywhere. if i can do that indefinitely, what am i waiting for? i’m at a point where i can make beats i dig. my vocal mixing is far from perfect but constantly working on it and seeing progress. so going to try and write more jams. get back in the habit of using those other music muscles. hopefully with some creativity and elbow grease i can get momentum going. appreciate all of you who have supported and continue to share your perspective on this adventure. taking it one day at a time. grateful to have the opportunity to even do the damn thing 🙏

PARENTING GEMS FROM MY MOST ELUSIVE GUEST (aka my mom)
I don’t even know where to start with these show notes… This is the hardest I’ve ever worked to get someone on the podcast. I am so stoked to finally drop this joint. In honor of Mother’s day this was one of the rare moments I’ve been able to record with my mom. It’s crazy that I’m almost 30 and I’m just now beginning to understand how much this woman sacrificed for me and my big bro. When I take the time to reflect on it I can now start to see how her parenting continues to affect me even at this stage in my life. I’ve always felt loved, which I now understand is so incredibly rare. And I attribute that to the way she raised us.  My folks brought the two of us up in an old farm house in upstate NY. It was an eye-sore they paid $300 a year for, but it was surrounded by woods and had a pond with a dock, which is why I’m sure I remember it more regal than it was.  In this episode ma shares stories (and some serious parenting gems) about that beginning chapter and what followed. We talk about how she used to create boardgames when we couldn’t afford ‘em, me terrorizing my older brother in our youth, and what it was like being a mom to a knucklehead who was trying to play Halo 2 professionally (still haven’t given up on this dream tbh).  I still don’t know how I got so lucky to have my mom as my best friend, but I thank my lucky stars every god damn day.  Happy Mother’s Day, Ma.  P.S. If you enjoy this episode PLEASE send my mom a DM on instagram (@jaa17) and say so. I’m going to try and get a part 2 down the line, and I’m pretty sure the only way she’ll let me record her again is if we’re able to rally some support/guilt her into it.

NEW ONLINE COURSE/NEW HAT
if you’ve ever tried to teach yourself any audio or video editing software you understand the learning curve can be steep af. i know the feeling. i’ve been making beats now damn near a decade and still learn new shit everyday. but that’s the beauty of it. if you’re able to stay curious and inspired it’s half the battle. i’ve been hinting not so subtly about this new course on music production i’m putting together, and in today’s podcast i talk about everything that goes into it, what it covers, and my overall vision for it. it’s also a typical Kia podcast so i spew plenty of nonsensical shit as well...but OH. YEAH. THATS. RIGHT. IM DOING MEEEE. IM DOING MEEEE. WHAT AM I D...okay i’m done. if you want to learn my three step system for putting together beats i talk about it a bit on the episode what you can expect to learn. get at me. KO

When two men from upstate link up across the world you know it’s gonna be something special. I had the pleasure of sitting down with @christopherwchiu this week for the podcast, and when i say we GOT one? Bruh. Y’all don’t even know. If you don’t know about Chris you’re about to. I’ve been a fan of this man for about 8 months and I’m so stoked I finally had a chance to chop it up with him. This man has lived about 7 different lives at this point. What an adventure. We get into all the crazy shit that’s happened to this man in the past, but these days Chris leads groups on transformative retreats in South America, and has been holding men’s circles in Chiang Mai over the past month. I was fortunate to attend and it’s an incredible blend between masculinity and vulnerability. I am so stoked to share this story with y’all. THE LEGEND RETURNS: With Modern Philosopher Ian Lewis
If you haven't heard my first interview with Ian, peep episode number #3 of this podcast. yup. you heard (err...read) that right. my third podcast ever was with this man. he had just returned from coaching basketball in bangkok. and now we're in chiang mai. life is a mind fuck. Ian came back out to Thailand on a new life adventure and we were able to chop it up on my rooftop. Ian shares how he was on the fast track to getting a Masters and being a teacher. until he jumped into those philly schools! man, i wish i could explain what that shit is actually like. i have so much more respect for teachers now. when you in the trenches, it’s too real. makes me reflect on those nearly two years going to war everyday. life is so different now. i truly can’t explain it. if you’re thinking of taking a leap of faith, no matter what it is, i can’t encourage you enough to do it. this podcast episode was an absolute blast. we chop it up about Ian coming face to face with a King Cobra, getting punched in the face and then escaping from some thugs at a night club in Bangkok, and his decision to make a career pivot to become a visual storyteller/modern philosopher. yeah. we take it everywhere on this one. appreciate my man coming out all the way from Philly. i think it opened his eyes to the way i’m living out here, and we had an absolute blast. BTG: Nomad Summit Recap/Why You're Holding Yourself Back
i had a blast at the nomad summit this past weekend. your boy hit some major breakthroughs. in this episode of the podcast i reflect on my takeaways and the new direction i’m taking the biz. - i left the weekend feeling hella inspired to teach what i’m passionate about. i never have gotten super into it before because it felt like a huge task to put together a course. but it doesn’t have to be. the beauty of teaching online is that it doesn’t have to appeal to everyone. you can get granular with it. so instead of one huge inclusive course im going to start making smaller more niche classes i’m actually interested in. you could be a teacher too, that was one of the biggest lessons. it doesn’t have to be some technical shit. the crazy part is we all have so many skills we aren’t aware of because we take them for granted. what are you already really good at? chess? talking to girls? cooking? finding flight deals? i think so often with this we’re our own worst enemy. you don’t realize how much you have to offer until you see what other people want to learn. so take a leap, make something, and put it out there. why the hell not? for all my homies that want to learn to make beats or understand the production software just know the boy is cooking. if you want to learn Ableton let me know! i’ll hit you with the free course coupons when they’re done.

BEHIND THE GRIND: Back in Chiang Mai/Travel Stories/Why Being Broke Is A Blessing
we back in studio for the podcast! one of the big lessons i’ve learned and share in this show is the power of being broke. because it forces you to get crafty, and in doing so you learn how to do a lot of shit yourself. i harp on that point a lot, and i truly believe in it. but another aspect of it i touch on is how much DIY projects also feed you some humble pie. because when you’re doing shit yourself it will probably lack more quality than if a paid professional did it. but that’s also part of the process. learning what you can live with and can’t live without. it helps you break down your art/content and focus on which parts you have to have. it’s taught me a lot about how little i need perfection these days. and at the same time how much i appreciate people’s work that does deliver high quality. most of our resistance to creating content consistently i believe is fear that it’s “not good enough”. but who is that for? not good enough for you? or are you afraid of people’s judgement? take the time to understand what your boundaries are with your work and what you can live with. chances are you’re your own worst critic. you’re stressing out over something that probably doesn’t matter anyway, so put it out into the world and see what happens. what do you have to lose? BEHIND THE GRIND: education, the importance of autonomy, and hats.
this week i get a little worked up this week talking about the business and how little school prepared me for life. especially because i felt so personally invested in/frustrated by my education. it’s crazy how our system in the states is still set up to make you a good worker for someone else. and probably saddle you with a shit ton of loans in the process. oh those dreams you were after? yeah, have fun chasing those. here’s $150,000 of debt you’ve gotta start paying in a year. good luck. the best skills i’ve learned for work have come from working. the most i’ve learned about business has come from starting one. you gotta get dirty and try shit. i know i’m a cornball, but i really wish our education system was set up to help people pursue their passion rather than being “realistic” and/or putting an emphasis on more traditional jobs held in high esteem. i’ve met too many rich miserable people to know that well paying and powerful gigs ain’t gonna make you happy on their own. you either need some mixture of autonomy and purpose, which i feel most folks are severely lacking. you get one of these bitches. for real. you really gonna spend it trying to make somebody else happy? fuck outta here. how do you feel about all this? do you agree? violently disagree? let me know: @kiaorion on everything. BEHIND THE GRIND: Episode 3
In the spirit of the holidays and being thankful i wanted to try fasting for a few days. I like to do these small experiments to check myself. I find it helps me appreciate what I’ve got, I think it can be easy to lose track of that. So, after finishing an 84 hour fast I wanted to dive into the details. This episode of the podcast is almost exclusively about preparing for the fast, the effects of it, and recommendations if you’re planning your own. A lot of folks say that fasting is a bit of a spiritual experience, and I can see why. This was a baby fast because I wanted to get my feet wet, but I can definitely see myself doing more of these in the future. Hope y’all are enjoying the holidays back home. Y’all better BODY some pumpkin pie for me! Got some fun music projects coming your way soon too! If you got questions you know where to find me. WHATUP! Your boy somehow caught the flu in one of the hottest places on earth. smh. so it was a bit of a rough week, but a good week. apologize for the sniffles. Spent most of it building out the new online beatstore which is now up and at 'em! www.orionbeats.com if you want to peep it. I'm currently testing a ton of different elements of the site, so if you want to check it out and give me feedback I'm all ears. The biz is going well, making a steady growth of sales each month. My customers are super dope. I've found my music resonates with a certain type of person, and that's really what I'm trying to do. Find people who fuck with the sound and then doubling down on it. In the tail end of the episode I also reflect on my 6th month mark out here in Thailand. I know I sound sappy but still incredibly grateful to be out here chasing the dream. I'm making it a thing that I'm going to pay my rent this month in beat sales, so hold me to it! If you need music or just want to bullshit you know where to find me. Let's WORK! BEHIND THE GRIND: Episode 1
Ay! This is something I've been doing for a while but finally found a name for it. These will be weekly episodes that I do on weeks I don't have guests, where I take you behind the scenes building out the online biz and talk about what's going on personally. I'll also be filming these episodes as much as possible so if that's more your thing you can watch 'em on what my dad would say "the Youtube". The episodes will cover what I'm learning in terms of marketing/business, fitness, travel shenanigans, and everything in between. If you know me then you already have a pretty good idea how these play out. It's a lot of life philosophy and some well deserved self-deprecating humor. This week I talk about how dope the community is out here in CM, what I'm focusing on (spoiler alert, it's music), and why I believe I'll be able to win in the end.
If you need music or just want to bullshit you know where to find me. Let's WORK! Connect with the boy: www.orionbeats.com social everything: @kiaorion kia@orionbeats.com

FINDING HAPPINESS: Teaching Mindfulness Around The World With Jeremy Lipkowitz
"will i ever be happy?" Jeremy Lipkowitz was at the peak of his career and couldn't find happiness. on the surface it looked like everything was working out perfectly, but behind closed doors, it couldn't have been farther from the truth. only a few years ago Jeremy was struggling daily with addiction while earning his PhD in Genetics at Duke. he ended up leaving the university and a potential fancy degree to pursue his true passion. Jeremy is now an educator who teaches mindfulness around the world. he offers simple and easy guided mindfulness meditations to help people reduce stress and anxiety, and ultimately feel more joy and happiness. he helps people find acceptance. but not like you might think. he comes at spirituality from a place of science and practicality, trading in the mood crystals for a more pragmatic approach. one that you can apply to your day to day life. in this episode we talk about life growing up in california, traveling around the world, going from a dishwasher to PhD student, and our favorite pokemon. we also get into some deep shit around addiction and Jeremy was willing to be completely honest about his own journey with it. i feel blessed that he was open to sharing his story, and i'm excited for you to hear it. for anyone that is currently battling their own demons, this one is for you. you can connect with Jeremy and checkout his online course below (50% off with the code "KIAORION" woop!) ART>EVERYTHING: Stories From The Heart With Singer/Songwriter Dylan Owen
the man. the myth. the legend. i can't tell you how long i've been waiting for this episode. one of my best friends and dopest artists/songwriters i know blessed me with this interview right before i came to thailand. he's the last friendly face i saw before taking the leap abroad, and there's a reason why. Dylan Owen has been one of my best friends since I was 19 years old. it's absolutely crazy to think about, i can still remember the day we met. you might say i have a bit of a man crush. and i'd say you're right. Dylan gave me my first chance at a real performance when he brought me on as his hypeman back in 2010. we opened for Mac Miller (RIP), Chris Webby, and did countless open mics together. we played everywhere from Webster Hall in NYC to the lunchroom in the dining hall at college. He is preparing to drop his most authentic and well crafted album to date, and i came to NYC to hear about it. in this episode we talk about growing up in Orange County, life at cornell, rap battles, his inspiration behind the new music, and what it takes to be this vulnerable as an artist in 2018. i can't wait for you all to hear this one, and i'm already excited for part 2. grab a coffee, prep for your road trip, or find a comfy seat in the subway and come have a blast with us on the LES. TRAVELING THE WORLD FOR SIX YEARS STRAIGHT: Filmmaker & Photographer Ermo Egberts
WHATUP DOE. Its been a while since the last episode, but I'm making it up to you with an ESPECIALLY dope guest this time around. My man Ermo Egberts is a photographer/videographer/documentary filmmaker who has been traveling the world for the past six years. If you're curious what life as a digital nomad is like, this is the one for you. We talk about life in India, Australia, New Zealand, Cambodia, Portugal, Switzerland, Chiang Mai...you get the point. After working in factories and other odd jobs while traveling to make ends meet, Ermo decided to go all in on his visual art. He has some incredible advice for aspiring artists (traveling or rooted) when it comes to setting goals, having confidence, and why it's important to do gigs for free when you're starting out. So many good things to say about this guy. The only issue with the podcast is that you can't see him. Even if you don't listen to the whole podcast AT LEAST peep the gram to see this man's perfect hair. Trust me, it's worth it. Hope you enjoy this manbun...err...episode as much as we did. WHO WHAT WOLF: Philly Musician/Producer/Performer Gabe Wolf
An incredibly sentimental episode, this was the very final episode of Orion Radio before it became Creative Contact. The good news is we closed out the old brand with a bang. This weeks guest is one of THE most electric performers I've ever seen. Gabe Wolf is a Philadelphia native who is one of the city's most promising upcoming musicians. I met Gabe on his rooftop during a house party and we bonded immediately over the self-doubt, ego, and the absolute mindfuck that comes along with being an artist. Whether he's throwing a show or self-producing his newest project, G is one of those guys who's always working on something. We chopped it up in my kitchen over sparkling water and college stories. Come hang and learn what being an independent musician is all about. LIVE YOUR TRUTH: Traveler, Creator, and Connector Deborah Charmelus
For close to a year Deb Charmelus has been working as a Princeton Teaching Fellow in Penang, Malaysia. But before traveling the world, she spent her time growing up and finding herself in Philly. Deb is one of those people who always seems to know what's cool. Even when I think I'm up on some shit she's lightyears ahead of me. As an avid music lover we've always had a lot to talk about, and in this episode, we dive into her life growing up in a Haitian family, how she ended up managing her brother's band, and what life is like in South East Asia. D was nice enough to host me for a week when I was visiting Penang. We did this interview in her living room on a beautiful morning while her friends were still asleep. I swear this woman is going to end up someone important in media down the line, so I want to have proof that I called it...cause I'm petty like that. It was a pleasure to have her on, and I hope you enjoy the conversation as much as I did. A WEEK AT HOG HEAVEN: Rick Rogers (aka my dad) Pt: 4
If you missed the other chapters with my dad check those here first: https://soundcloud.com/creativecontact/catch-22-childrens-author-rick-rogers-aka-my-dad-pt-1 Before coming to Thailand I spent a month at home prepping for the trip. I spent a lot of that time with my dad, and he was nice enough to let me bust the mics out for part of it. This is part 4 of my dad's journey. However, this chapter is less about my dad and more about re-uniting with his childhood friend, Critter. They ride motorcycles. They get into bar fights. And someone may or may not get an ear bitten off. That's what happens when you spend a week at Hog Heaven. There was actually a place called Hog Heaven. I'm not joking. What happens next? Well you'll have to listen to find out! I mean it this time. Grab your drink of choice and come kick it with us outside on the deck. This is a fun one. THE BEAUTY OF A SIMPLE LIFE: World Traveler Vadym Yavych
Vadym Yavych has spent the past 7 months on the road. I met Vadym at a club meeting for travelers in Chiang Mai Thailand last week and he was nice enough to let me talk to him about his life growing up in the Ukraine. We met up in a busy mall on Sunday afternoon (pardon the noise) before going to the movies to see Deadpool. He drops some gems on traveling, his summer waiting tables at iHop, and how to live life with intention. This man has great stories about finding happiness and is wise beyond his years. It was a pleasure to have him on, and I hope you enjoy the conversation as much as I did. This man has played an incredibly important role in my life. Efrain Hernandez aka Big E aka Mr. Gift of Gab has been a dear mentor and friend of mine for the past five years. We met up in Central Park (pardon the background noise) hours before my flight to Thailand. Street Hustler, Ball-Player, and now the Co-Founder of the non-profit Reconnect Brooklyn - this man has done it all. He has no phone, no computer, and no social media so if you want to get in contact good luck. Let me know and I'll send the carrier pigeon. An incredible dude with an even more compelling story. I hope you dig! P.S. Still figuring out the new mics so pardon the strange phasing issues. It's not you. If you missed part 1 with my dad check it here first: https://soundcloud.com/creativecontact/catch-22-childrens-author-rick-rogers-aka-my-dad-pt-1 You might not realize it but Colin Kaepernick is actually taking moves from dad's playbook. You'll know what I mean when you peep the show. Had a chance to sit down again with pops and got part 2 of his life story pre-Kia. This is a real homegrown episode. You get to hear the family cat in the background, the rice cooker beeping, and a special story if you stick around till the end. I feel blessed I'm able to have this type of a relationship with my old man. I realize that's a privilege. Thought it would be an interesting experiment to record our hangouts and get his life story on tape. Grab a cold beverage and come kick it with us at the kitchen table. Enjoy! GRINDMODE: Philly Rapper ToNe Wiley
I don't know how he does it. This man is a dad AND an artist. ToNe Wiley is a Philadelphia native with an incredible story. ToNe was willing to chop it up with the boy in the kitchen a few weeks back. He came out to West Philly and we talked about what it's like being an artist while balancing a family. You can't wait for the hand of god to come down from the sky and give it to you. If you've got dreams you have to take action. ToNe drops some great gems on how to do just that. Peep the episode and get ready for his album "Black Sheep Winter" coming soon! CATCH 22: Children's Author Rick Rogers (aka my dad) PT 1
What to even put here... I INTERVIEW MY DAD JUST LISTEN TO IT, OKAY? If you know anything about me you know how dope my parents are. That's nothing against your parents...and it's not a competition but...mine are just... better? Sidebar: please DM my mom https://www.instagram.com/jaa17/ and tell her to stop being a baby and do the podcast already... I was fortunate enough to sit down with my old man, Rick Rogers, and dive deep into life pre-Kia. (God knows I came along and ruined everything.) Pops has been working on an autobiography since 2012 and just finished it last week. It's over 1000 pages. This man got STORIES Y'ALL. I thought I'd release this in honor of the fact he finished that sucker, and give you a little taste of what will be in the book. We don't quite make it to the glory years, but we get a taste of what life was like growing up in Miami, getting drafted into the Vietnam War, and much much more. Pop was a storyteller and children's author for most of his professional career. He self-published three books and traveled around the US telling stories for school programs. He continues to tell stories in schools (he lands more paid gigs than i do. i'm not joking) and recently with the help of his more handsome son created his first website. You can check out the website below, and if you'd like to get in touch you can use either email, smoke signal, or carrier pigeon. I love this man. And you will too. Enjoy! I NEVER HAD A PLAN B: Artistic Genius & Educator Marcus Branch
BRUH. This man really does it all. When I say multi-dimensional it doesn't even come close to an accurate description. Photographer, director, dancer, model, the list goes on... I met up with Marcus a few weeks ago at a cozy little cafe on Pine Street. He dropped some CRAZY gems on the boy and was hands down one of the dopest artists I've ever had the chance to meet. We talk about what it's like growing up in the "country hood" of Norristown, going to UArts in Philly, and how he manages all of his creative pursuits at the same time. Marcus has such an incredible and compelling story, I hope you learn as much from him as I did. (Frfr, I listened back to the entire episode again this morning because there was so much I missed the first time...) Marcus is currently holding a Casting Call in Philadelphia, March 24th 9am-1pm for multiple projects and creative ventures: "Follow these steps to the T if you want in: (18+ Only) Email 1 headshot + 1 full-body shot minimum (phone pics are ok), name, age, location, height, weight, talents + skills to BRANCH.CASTINGS@gmail.com with CASTING in the subject line, DEADLINE MARCH 21ST for submission." LEARN TO LET GO: Creator Zeek Burse & Manager Paralee Knight
I don't know if there's anything I can put here that will come even remotely close to how dope this interview was. But a man can try. I met up with creator Zeek Burse and his writing partner/manager Paralee Knight at a coffee shop out in old city last week. We agreed the interview would be from 10:30-11:30. We talked from 10:30-1:30. I couldn't squeeze the whole thing into one episode but I got as much fire in as possible. I didn't even realize we spoke for that long because I was having so much fun. They drop some GEMS in here. Zeek talks about what it's like taking the leap to being a musician full-time, playing shows around the world, and Paralee gives some incredible insight on what it's like supporting an artist from the manager's side. Don't take my word for it. Listen to this one. Seriously, you can thank me later. Zeek is currently at SXSW, and you can connect/check out his upcoming shows below. Enjoy! Also, are strangers in the apartment? Maybe. But this was recently posted so obviously he made it out okay. (Yes, it's still me typing this copy and I'm talking about myself in third person. Deal with it.) Short and sweet this episode gives you an update on what's going on behind the scenes of the recent content, and a peek at Kia's consistent mental decline and imminent slide toward self immolation... LEARN YOURSELF. A Candid Conversation w/ Rap Artist Claude Forte
West Philadelphia native Claude Forte doesn't pretend to have it all figured out. But he doesn't need to. After switching his focus from playing ball to making music he's confident it's just a matter of time. And I don't blame him. When I first heard his songs I could tell there was something unique about this dude. His voice carries a certain weight that only comes with years in the game. After losing his dad at a young age Claude realized how important it was to take his craft seriously. He has recently become a father as well, and that fueled the fire even more for him to make this work. There are some great stories in here as well as advice for artists still trying to find their voice. Interview starts around 6:30. Enjoy! Branding & Strategy GEMS w/ Will Toms Co-Founder of RECPhilly
They don't call it the city of brotherly love for nothing. Will Toms is a young entrepreneur from Philly who is creating a new way for artists to collaborate. Growing up in and around the city Will saw how often artists were competing for the same shine. RECPhilly, a company he co-founded with his high school best friend Dave Silver, is one of the most prominent start-ups in the city. The goal for RECPhilly was to create a space that could be a one stop shop for artists to find everything under one roof. A recording studio? Check. A visual arts space for music videos? Check. A chill spot for your boys to hangout and play ping-pong? Check. What originally started as a one room operation in an old North Philadelphia window factory has quickly become a sought after collaborative environment. Will and I chopped it up at the studio and he gave me a tour of the whole operation. We talk about learning his hustle from his grandma, starting out as a show promoter for college parties, and living on the floor at RECPhilly for a year to get the business off the ground. There are some incredible take aways about branding and strategy as an emerging artist in this one. I hope you learn as much as I did. If you would like to connect with Will or learn more about the free thinkers program the info and links are below.
A Conversation w/ Philly Living LEGEND Spade-O
This man needs no introduction. You can't talk about Philly Hip-Hop without bringing him or his group into the conversation. Spade-O from the legendary rap crew Major Figgas was generous enough to sit down and chop it up with the boy about his come-up and rap career. We talk about what it was like growing up hustling in North Philly, signing to a major label in raps golden era, hearing his song played out of car radios for the first time, smoking cigars with Jay-Z, and much more. Spade is currently working on the finishing touches for numerous upcoming projects, and can be contacted on his social media below. Music for the Revolution w/ Bets from Ill Fated Natives
If y'all from Philly then you've probably (see: definitely) heard of Ill Fated Natives. They were featured recently as one of the city's top 19 young people making noise and I was lucky enough to kick it with their bassist, Bets, for this weeks podcast. https://billypenn.com/2017/08/29/whos-next-music-19-young-pros-creating-the-new-philadelphia-sound/ Bets and IFN are creating the soundtrack for the revolution. Bets and I talk about his experience growing up Haitian-American in NYC/Philly, the history of the band, and why it's important to make music that's meaningful. Bets also gives me advice on how to take part in hip-hop as a white boy without causing more harm than good. Interview starts around 6:30 and we have way too much fun in this one. Stories of a Born Hustler w/ Hip-Hop Artist Rowlan
Tommy Rowland is a Born Hustler. You might know him as the hip-hop artist "Rowlan" who has been hitting more than a million streams a month and is working every day on being one of the biggest names in music. Rowlan gave me an afternoon in New York last week to drop some knowledge about what it's like chasing the dream and how much work it takes to get there. We talk about his time selling phones at Verizon, his advice to up-and-coming musicians on management, and of course, his pet pig Leila. I listened to every Rowlan interview and podcast I could find before our meeting so that we didn't talk about the same 'ol shit. Interview starts around 2 minutes and we get DEEP. A Lot of $$$ Between 0 and A Million Dollars w/ Jerame Hawkins
ONE OF DEM ONES. This episode is mostly me laughing with one of my biggest mentors and dearest friends, Jerame Hawkins aka Hawkeye Productions. J is the Director of the Youth Advocate Program in Ithaca and also runs multiple online businesses. If you're into old school hip-hop and what it means to be an artist in this day and age this is the one for you. We talk about the definition of success, making 26gs off a Blues Clues commercial, and why persistence beats passion. I also fumble my way through the story of how we met when I was 19 wearing cut off jorts and a floppy hat. Interview starts around 7 minutes. If you dig this one I have a feeling a part II and III will happen in the future. Peep it and let me know what you think! P.S. J and I kicked it in Ithaca when I was home for the holiday, and he was generous enough to let me intrude on his family time. I want to shout out his little girl and fiancé for letting me steal him for a couple minutes and who were hanging with us throughout the interview. P.S. Fighting the Good Fight w/ Maryam Elarbi
Maryam is easily one of the most woke/articulate people I know. If she's not at a rally fighting the patriarchy she's posting ridiculously good looking pictures on social. She's one of those people that just kicks ass at everything. I'm not bitter about it (maybe a little...) Maryam came by the kitchen to talk about growing up Muslim-American and how she has been able to find a balance between the two cultures. We go DEEP on this one. She helps me understand how privilege plays into white artistry and what I can do as an aspiring musician to make a difference. We also talk about upcoming UK acts you don't want to miss, Leonardo DiCaprio not aging well, and the importance of seeing yourself reflected in media. I know this one runs a little long but give it a listen but I promise it's worth it. P.S. If I sound desperate for her validation throughout the interview it's because I am. I just wanted her to like me and I'm not sure if I accomplished that or not. You'll have to listen and find out. Let me know what you think of the episode and if you'd like to continue the conversation with her on social you can find all of her info below. P.P.S. I'm Here For A Reason w/ Spiz The Prophet
This man has seen it all. A young man growing up in North Philadelphia Spiz The Prophet has a perspective unlike anyone I've ever met. Sharing his incredible journey to Hell and back I was lucky enough to sit down with Spiz a few weeks ago during a snow storm in the city. We spoke for close to 3 hours. Behind the Scenes of VICE News Tonight on HBO w/ Dexter Thomas
There's so much I admire about this man I don't know where to start. Dexter Thomas has worked for the LA Times and is currently a correspondent at VICE News Tonight on HBO. If you've ever wondered what it's like behind the scenes of a news company this is the one for you. He was at the Williamsburg hotel for work and was kind enough to give me some time. He also bought me breakfast. We spoke for close to three hours and he said very nice things about me, none of which made it in the episode. What we do talk about are how he chooses the stories he pursues, BTS of a VICE story, and what it's like to interview Keenan Thompson from SNL. The interview with Dex starts around 4:18. Why Music Matters//Tales From The Crypt with Founder of NuBlack Music Group KC
Hands down one of my favorite interviews I've ever done. I traveled to Jersey City to get this man on the mic. KC is the founder and manager of NuBlack Music Group, a management company established in 2011 that is abandoning the sanctity of convention in life & in sound. I met KC in college soon after he had a career-ending football injury. He turned that same focus he had for sports into creating a platform for artists with incredible voices to share their unique stories. We talk about how he established the label, his Nigerian parent's Romeo & Juliet love story, and chop it up about crazy rap battles back in the glory days. The interview with KC starts around 4:45. Joe Kleanest also makes a guest appearance. Come sit down with me and Randall as we talk about creating an alter-ego, the Boston punk scene, and how important it is to find your voice creatively. Randall is a singer/producer/engineer/all around creative dude who used to tour the world as a drummer and is now making hip-hop/r&b jams in philly. He's fresh off the release of his new song "Bruise" which you can find below. At some point we end up talking about our most influential books and couldn't remember the name of one. Get at me if you make it that far and I'll tell you which one it was... WE OUT HERE w/ illustrator & artistic genius Dave Proch
Yeah. We're doing a podcast. It's going to be experimental and about promoting my guests but secretly for me to steal their creative inspirations and take them for my own. Dave Proch stops by to talk about growing up in Philadelphia, Vanilla Ice's hair, and what it's like trying to make a living as a cartoonist. Interview with Dave starts at 9 minutes. I also review the new album Sonder Son by Brent Faiyaz. Welcome to Orion Radio Become a supporter of this podcast: https://anchor.fm/creativecontact/support
