#11 Tamzin Merchant on creating her acting career, writing a children's book and what creativity means to her

#11 Tamzin Merchant on creating her acting career, writing a children's book and what creativity means to her

Today on the podcast, we have a very special guest, Tamzin Merchant! She’s an English actress, best known for starring roles in Pride & Prejudice, The Tudors, Salem and Carnival Row, which we loved! She also does lots of other creative things and is releasing her first children’s book in mid-February called the Hatmakers - it sounds magical. You can pre-order here before it sells out.

We felt like we were in Hollywood! We’re very excited to share with you how Tamzin got started (she took her career into her own hands, like a true creative entrepreneur), what the film and TV business is like, any tips she has for anyone looking to get into those businesses and what creativity means to her.

Her 3 recommends were:

  1. Women who Run with the Wolves: Myths and Stories of the Wild Woman Archetype by Clarissa Pinkola Estés. The book is huge, but magical apparently. The audio book was recommended too.
  2. Ted talks - Brene Brown - the power of vulnerability was a firm favourite.
  3. Quote from Martha Graham - have a read about it here. It is beautiful. Tamzin says it in the episode too.

*This is the last episode in the series (booo) - be sure to listen to the previous ones if you haven’t*

We have a lovely guest on the podcast today, Emily Canino! She set up Doodle Moo over 5 years ago and it’s an award winning lifestyle brand that makes art, stationary, jewellery and gifts for playful souls! Check out Doodlemoo.com and @Doodle_Moo on Instagram.

Emily creates a world of playfulness through design and typography. David Bowie is heavily featured! Her work has been on Channel 4, tattoo fixer on E4 (excited to hear about that!) and her Creative Planner was listed in the Top 10 Planners for 2020 by Stylist Magazine! She also runs her own graphic design studio.

This is a really lovely chat with a female indie business owner, trying to make her mark on the world. We talk about how she got started, her creative process, marketing, networking, balancing creative time & business time (a constant dilemma for any creative!) and hear a funny story about a dog at the end!

Emily recommended 3 great podcasts too.

How I Built This by Guy Raz - Diana and I love this!

The Me & Orla podcast from Sara Tasker - she has a lovely voice apparently and lots of social media tips

Girl Boss with Sophia Amoruso, as it's all about powerful women - WAPOW!

#8 Jo Cruickshanks on the power of breathwork on creativity, wellbeing and finding your story

#8 Jo Cruickshanks on the power of breathwork on creativity, wellbeing and finding your story

So excited to have Jo Cruickshanks on the podcast!

She is currently on a mission to create a movement of change powered by breathwork and is a creative strategist. She runs a business called the Breathery, which is a gateway for people to find out what truly makes them say ‘Hell-yes!’ and be their true selves. She’s been on a journey from running her own branding agencies, helping to build websites, brand stories and marketing campaigns for big brands like Liam Gallagher's Pretty Green, to burning out, twice, along the way. But the Breathery was founded upon the discoveries of the joys of breathwork and its benefits, something which Sam and I both enjoy doing too!

We chat through breathwork, branding, burn out, building a community, what creativity means to her and lots more!

If you're in a little bit of a quandary on what your purpose in life is, breathwork may help you see some light.

There is a little bit of barking in the background from Jo's dogs Rosie and Bruno, but don't worry, they were just really pumped that Jo's story was being shared!

Check out Jo's instagram @thebreathery and if you'd like to give breathwork a try, she does a free online class every Friday at 10.30am at the moment, sign up for details via her newsletter on her website or go straight to her newsletter sign up here.

Jo also mentions a couple of times the story telling framework (The hero's journey) from Joseph Campbell, you can find out more about that here

#3: Alex Chisnall on re-inventing yourself and creating the life you want

#3: Alex Chisnall on re-inventing yourself and creating the life you want

In the 3rd podcast from Creative Jungle Company, Diana and Sam get through quite a lot with podcast guru Alex Chisnall!

He is host of the number 1 ranked entrepreneurial podcast - Screw it, Just do it - and runs his own podcast agency, along with being a mentor to many startups. It felt like an honour to have a podcast guru on our show so early on and we know Alex from when we used to do work together with Virgin StartUp, Richard Branson’s not-for-profit entrepreneurial arm, which supports founders with advice, funding and mentoring. He’s had the likes of Holly Tucker from NOTHS, Richard Reed from Innocent, Jamie Laing from Made in Chelsea & Candy Kittens sweets and the inspirational Lewis Howes from the US, who Diana loves, on his own podcast.

Alex has had quite the journey through life and we reckon you can learn a lot from it! From being a journalist with BBC Radio Wales, to nearly 16 years as cabin crew with Virgin Atlantic flying all over the world before taking redundancy when he was 39, to re-inventing himself numerous times and setting up his own sports injury clinic, to supporting startups and finally, inhale, having his own inspiring podcast and podcast agency.

We’re excited for what’s coming up, to learn how Alex has basically re-invented himself so many times and how he has lead such a unique life so far.

We run through:

- Finding what you want to do and re-inventing yourself

- Podcasting and why it is so popular

- Setting up a business and connecting with others

- Life hacks, to help you get to the lifestyle you want

- The future for Alex and where people can find out more about him

To find out more about Alex, search for Alex Chisnall on Linkedin.

#2: INxSANIxTY on finding your creative calling and the power of art

On episode 2 of the Creative Jungle Podcast we are very excited to have Sani, known by the name INxSANIxTY, on the podcast, with the theme of finding your creative calling and the power of art! This episode really taps into the mind of a full-time artist and what it is like to create for a living.

He is a contemporary visual artist and all round, self-taught creative, with painting, digital illustration and sculpting being his specialities. He is based in Peckham and we got to know him when we had a neighbouring studio. His dedication to his craft and what he produces always amazed Diana & I. Check out @INxSANIxTY on Instagram before you have a listen, to get a sense for the amazing art he creates.

Sani chats through how he thinks about creating, how he makes his art, how he felt he was always meant to be an artist, how he ended up being a full-time creative and found his calling, where his inspiration comes from, his Nigerian roots, what it’s like being a full time creative and the compromises he doesn’t make. He also chats through how creativity can be used for good and how he feels about Black Lives Matter, along with some advice for aspiring creatives and so much of his thinking. His energy and passion for being creative is brilliant.

We hope that it is helpful in making you think more creatively in your life and business and how once you have a clear vision, you should stick to it.

Creative Jungle Trailer

Creative Jungle Trailer

In this trailer episode of the Creative Jungle Podcast, Diana and Sam, a couple, quickly bring you through what the podcast is hoping to achieve and how it will bring creativity to your life and business, in the hope it is of benefit to you.  They quickly run through their creative business (see www.MYO.Place and below) which they set up, then the reason for the podcast, which is that they have become fascinated by how guests get creative in the studio, but also the fact that everyone is creative, yet we know so little about creativity. You have a creative superpower, but you many not know how to use it or how it works. Creative thinking impacts the launch of ideas, products, services and movements - it's the fabric of every day life.  You are invited to come on a creative journey with them, where they will speak with creative entrepreneurs and makers, along with creative doers and thinkers, who have launched successful startups, products, services, innovations and much more - so that you can bring some more creativity to your life and maybe, just maybe, help you think just that little bit differently, so that new opportunities and possibilities arise in your life. M.Y.O is a creative studio for adults, that he set up with his girlfriend Diana in 2017. M.Y.O has helped 10,000s of guests get creative in their Central London studio, but also off-site at events, festivals and brand launches. They host 14+ creative classes from lino printing to embroidery to pottery, in a relaxed and inspiring environment. Diana and Sam have also recently launched the Creative Jungle Company (www.CreativeJungleCompany.com), whose mission, linked to the podcast, is to bring creativity to life and business - initially starting with a podcast, creative kits and thoughs on creativity and creative thinking.
