#72: Kara Powell - Characteristics of Churches Reaching Millennials

ABOUT KARA

Kara Powell, PhD, is the Executive Director of the Fuller Youth Institute (FYI) and a faculty member at Fuller Theological Seminary. As a youth ministry veteran of over 20 years, she serves as an Advisor to Youth Specialties. Named by Christianity Today as one of "50 Women You Should Know", Kara is the author or co-author of a number of books including Sticky Faith, Essential Leadership, Deep Justice Journeys, Deep Justice in a Broken World, Deep Ministry in a Shallow World, and the Good Sex Youth Ministry Curriculum.

CHARACTERISTICS OF CHURCHES REACHING MILLENNIALS:

The Issue:

“The first job of leaders is to define reality.”

The best research indicates that almost half of youth group grads are leaving the church after they graduate.

The young adult population is grossly underrepresented in most churches.

The vast majority of churches are aging and shrinking.

Kara and the team at Fuller Youth Institute have been researching churches that are beating the odds and “gr

CHURCH PLANTING

God will never promote you beyond what your character can sustain.

Church Planting

Birthing a church is like birthing a child.

Pregnancy- this stage is the planting and growth of God’s vision for the church that He wants to birth through you. It is so important that this “pregnancy” is taken full-term, not birthed prematurely. During this time, it is important to trust the leaders in your life and their wisdom for timing.

It’s one thing to stand next to a leader and feel like you are carrying the weight of that leadership, but you won’t know the full weight of leadership until you get there yourself.

Building a Team

It is important to surround yourself with people that can come alongside you and lift your hands, not hang off your hands. People that bring solutions, not just problems, are critical to supporting a lead pastor.

It’s a privilege to get close to the “spiritual nakedness” of your leader. It’s in our brokenness that the light of Jesus shines thr

#70: Dan Matlock - Be The Church

ABOUT DAN

Dan and Kelly Matlock grew up in the Midwest but fell in love with Texas when they moved there in 2003. In 2011 they felt called to start a church in Hays County. Dan loves spending time with his family, being outdoors, playing sports, and driving his motorcycle. He’s an avid football fan in general but a diehard fan of the Green Bay Packers and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish.

BE THE CHURCH

Be The Church:

Build an awesome team around you.

Before you “have” church, you have to BE the church.

When you look at the life of Jesus, he was not surrounded by “Christians” all the time. How can we get in people’s worlds and be the church outside the walls of a church?

Get involved in the community. The church is here to serve people.

The church exists to show the community what God is like.

Serving the community with no strings attached will open doors for relationships later on.

Be intentionally close to others churches. When the church wins, the kingdom wins.

#69: Kyle Turner - Church Planting & Seeking God's Calling

ABOUT KYLE Kyle Turner is the lead pastor of The Cause: A Jesus Church, which he launched in September 2010 with his wife, Liz, in the heart of Kansas City, MO. Kyle and Liz have two children: Blaire and Graham, as well as a furry one named Cub. Kyle is an all-around sports fan, played a mean game of high school basketball, and loves riding motorcycles. He is also surprisingly good at free-styling fresh rap lyrics. SERVANT LEADERSHIP Recognizing Staff Abuse: Staff Abuse: the idea that you can treat people who work for you however you want in the name of serving God. Common Characteristics of Staff Abuse: demanding, disrespectful leader belittles staff from platform micromanaging & lack of trust failure to delegate not communicating or building relationships with staff not giving appropriate affirmation This is not what Jesus modeled to us. #59: Jim Wideman - Leadership in the Home

A leader points the way and sets the pace of the home.
It’s critical to have goals for yourself and for your family.

In Your Marriage:
Never quit dating your spouse.
Let your kids see you in love with your spouse.
Three areas that need intentional attention in marriage:
Prayer life/ spiritual life
Money
Intimacy
If you're not working on these 3 areas intentionally, the relationship will struggle.

Parenting:
Deuteronomy 6 was written for parents.
Often times, parents want better for their kids in most areas, but spirituality can be neglected. It’s easy to settle for “just don't be bad.”
Parents are responsible for setting the pace and having a vision for the home.
If you have a vision for kids at the church, you should have a vision for the kids in your home.
If you don't have a plan or goals to aim at, it won't happen.
Be intentional.

Positional vs. Relational Leadership:
Positional leadership is the lowest form of leadership.
Anybody can be a father. Strive to be a daddy;

#34: Oneka McClellan - How women's ministry is having a BIG effect on Shoreline Church in Dallas.

In the summer of 2010, Oneka and her husband, Earl, sold their home, packed up their two sons, and moved to Dallas, TX. A short while later, they sat in a living room in Dallas and shared the vision of Shoreline with 17 courageous people. They started with a bible study in a nursing home. The bible study kept growing and they began meeting at the Angelika movie theater. They had their grand opening January 22, 2012 and saw over 500 people in attendance. In 2012, they moved into their current home off of Northwest Highway. God kept sending families, students, single people, and couples to be a part of their new church. Now with over 1,000 people who call Shoreline Dallas "home," they are moving to a new facility off of Garland Road. They are also so excited to announce that in 2016, they will be launching a church in Antigua, Guatemala.

In this episode, Oneka discusses the heart and vision of Sisterhood, the women’s ministry of Shoreline, Dallas, a ministry that believes in the gather

#33: Peter Haas - Broken Escalators

While working in a nightclub as a rave-dj, Peter challenged the God of the Universe to “reveal himself” in an unmistakable way. Only seconds later, God responded to him with a jaw-dropping Gospel encounter that shook the foundation of his life. Since converting to Christianity on the spot, Peter has traveled the world, sharing his radical story and calling others to experience the same joy and power. Within a few short years, Peter was sucked into full-time ministry. After pastoring in Wisconsin for a decade, Peter relocated to Minneapolis, Minnesota in 2004 to plant an arts-oriented church called Substance. #29: Willie George - 40+ years of ministry

At age 20, Pastor Willie George began an outreach with Sunday School buses and quickly learned how to hold the attention of rowdy, unchurched kids. In the decade that followed, his groundbreaking techniques brought him to national prominence as an authority on children's ministry. In 1982, he created a wildly successful, nationally broadcast kid's television program, The Gospel Bill Show.

In spite of his success as a traveling minister, he longed to build a local church where youth and children's ministries would be showcased. Since 1987, Church on the Move in Tulsa, OK has been a leader in effective ministry for children and teenagers, with outreaches like Dry Gulch, U.S.A. and Oneighty.

Today, the effectiveness of his vision is revealed in the amazing second-generation leadership team at Church on the Move. The same communicative skills that marked Pastor Willie George as a children's minister have positioned him as the Senior Pastor of one of America's most innovative churches.

#28: Joshua Gagnon - Training Leaders for Growth

In 2008, Josh launched Next Level Church in New England with a desire to be relevant, loving, and life-giving. He claims to have made tons of mistakes and have been making it up as he goes, trusting God for wisdom beyond my years and experience. Today Next Level Church has 7 locations throughout the Northeast in 4 different states with thousands of people each weekend in attendance, and best of all, thousands of people have said, "Yes" to a relationship with Jesus.

God-willing, NLC will launch dozens of relevant, loving, and life-giving locations all over America and beyond. As people look at what God is doing at NLC, my hope is that they will be amazed by God because clearly only God could write this story!

Josh is married to his best friend and the love of his life, Jennifer. They have two boys named Malachi and Nehemiah.
