Episode 125 True Crime: The Story of James Joseph Robinson
This week we are going to do it a little differently and we are going to tell you how Danielle connects this story to the Bachelor at the end of the episode. Just know, it is connected to all the Brenden / Pieper, relationships before the beach, and drama. Danielle tells the story of James Joseph Robinson who was accused of killing his 7 children in Arcadia, Florida. Episode 124 Bachelor in Paradise: A Harem of Disgruntled Females (Season 7, Week 5)
We are joined by one of our faves… It’s Amanda from Drinking the Kool-Aid Podcast! This week we see the conclusion of the Brendan and Pieper drama and it ends in a pretty epic disrespectful fashion. We also get our third rose ceremony of the season, with a special rose going to Natasha. We get two new arrivals, who both have their own date card; Blake Monar (who we don’t know) goes on a date with Tia (aka Someone Who Shall Not Be Named) and Dr. Joe Park goes on a date with Natasha. Dr. Joe and Natasha’s date does not end well. We also see some love exchanged between Serena P. and Joe. This week’s episode was full of ups and downs for the BIPOC points. We saw Natasha and Dr. Joe on a date. We heard from Jessenia, Pieper, Deandra, Maurissa, Riley, Thomas, Tammy, Aaron, and Serena P. We also, briefly, saw Mari, Ivan, and Abigail. Danielle gave 3 points each, for special guests Lil Jon and Tituss Burgess. She takes away 5 points for the over-sexualization of Riley and Maurissa, again. She gives 10 points for Natasha receiving that bonus rose from Paula and Wells, but then takes away 10 points for Brenden still getting between the Natasha / Dr. Joe date. Lastly, she takes away 10 points for the Ivan swerve. We know if Megan and Amanda had their way, the total BIPOC points would be 0 for the Ivan shade! All in all, the total is 59 points in regards to diversity. Episode 123 True Crime: The Murder of Paige Birgfield
Megan wanted to base a story on how Brendan was leading a double life, but this story twisted in a way that Megan was not expecting, so she went with it. Paige Birgfield was a loving single mother of three young kids who disappeared on June 28, 2007. She was missing for five years before her remains were located, and during the investigation, information comes out that surprises her family and friends… Paige is leading a double life… (Story Starts at: 7:11) Links discussed in this episode: ABC 20/20 S43 E26 If I Can't Have You… You can always connect with us at: linktr.ee/CrimeandRoses. Episode 122 True Crime: The Murder of Vicky Rose Miller
We are playing a little catch-up since Danielle has been sick. A couple of weeks ago, we saw two very problematic Victoria’s on our Bachelor in Paradise screen, with Victoria Paul and Victoria Larson. Thankfully they are both gone. Danielle decides to tell the story of an amazing Victoria that was taken from this life too soon, Vicky Rose Miller. Vicky was a bright and loved young woman, who was trying to find herself and navigate life. She was murdered in May of 1996 in Boynton Beach, Florida and her killer has never been caught. The Boynton Beach Police Department is using new technology, in the form of a podcast, to try to gain leads to catch Vicky’s Killer. Episode 121 Bachelor in Paradise: For the Clou-T (Season 7, Week 4)
We are joined tonight by a special guest, it’s Renise, one of the Black Bachelor Babes! Follow them on Instagram, IMMEDIATELY. There was so much that happened in these four hours. The main focus of our conversation, and the conversation on social media, is the triangle between our Queen Natasha, Pieper, and Brendan. The way that Brendan treated Natasha is incredibly hurtful and manipulative. Both Megan and Danielle admit they were wrong and make public apologies. Megan’s apology is to Natasha herself, and Danielle’s to the listeners about her former stanning of Brendan (Megan also joins in this apology). AND THEN to watch a very similar triangle play out between Chris, Jessenia, and Alana… where everyone runs to Jessenia’s side, really makes us want to hug Natasha. We also chat about Joe and Kendall, plus the Kenny, Demi, Tia, and Mari square. Monday's episode gets 40 BIPOC points. We saw Pieper on a date, heard from Serena P., Abigail, Mari, Jessenia, and Natasha. We also saw Deandra, Thomas, Maurissa, Riley, and Ivan. On Tuesday we saw Chris, Chelsea, Aaron, and Thomas go on dates. We heard from Mari, Tammy, Maurissa, and Riley. We also saw Ivan, Serena P., Abigail, Deandra, and Natasha. Danielle gave bonus points for our new host, Tituss Burgess, and bonus points for the BIPOC contestants invited to the VIP group date. The total for Tuesday is 87. The Assassination of John F. Kennedy: September 2021 True Crime Patreon Exclusive
This is a sneak peek of our September 2021 True Crime Patreon Exclusive content. You can hear the full episode here, starting at the $3 level of our Patreon membership! Content Warning: Discussion of child death and stillborn child This month, Megan tells the prequel to the Trial of Jacob Rubenstein; this is the story of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. While his assassination is one of the most widely covered stories in the history of true crime, there are so many conspiracy theories that surround it. We dive into some of them. There are also many tangentially related true crime stories that, in all honesty, could be their own full story… Maybe we’ll cover them someday?

Episode 120: Bachelor in Paradise: Danielle Woke up to Violence (Season 7, Week 3)
Danielle is not feeling great this week, and when she fell asleep, she woke up to straight violence on the beach. This week is so chaotic, all the couples that you thought were strong are decidedly NOT strong. Mari wants to be able to go on dates with other people, which Kenny doesn’t really like, but then seems to hit it off with Demi. Chris Conran and Chasen enter, they have a double date card and they take Jessenia and Deandra. Grocery Store Joe and Serena P have a one-on-one date. Demi gave Kenny a cake for his birthday, Mari is not a fan of this and throws the cake in the fire, which very much upsets Riley, because he just wanted to eat the cake, damn. Aaron and Tammy are not doing well either, especially not after she chooses Thomas over Aaron. Karl gives Deandra a bracelet so Chasen has to one-up him and give her a necklace, which leads to a confrontation. Tre self-eliminates, then Tahzjuan self-eliminates. And then Becca Kufrin walks in. Noah and Abigail may be just friends? Someone, who may also be known as Tia Booth, comes in and she takes Kenny on a date which neither Mari nor Demi appreciate. And finally, Kendall arrives and makes a beeline to talk to Joe. Pure chaos this week! OH, MAN. You can always connect with us at: linktr.ee/CrimeandRoses. Episode 119 True Crime: The Murder of Deborah Gardner
Last week was the premiere of Season 7 of Bachelor in Paradise! So this week, Megan talks about a murder in Paradise. Deborah Gardner was a stunningly beautiful Peace Corps Volunteer, who was assigned to teach high school science and home economics in the Polynesian Kingdom of Tonga. While there, Deborah was harassed, stalked, and murdered by a fellow Peace Corps Volunteer. (Story starts at: 8:06) We also chat about why the workweek is the way it is, 9 to 5 and 5 days a week, hint: it's from the Industrial Revolution and it’s due for a change. Danielle also has a new podcast recommendation (Algorithm), and a new tv show (The Chair on Netflix) recommendation for all of us to check out. Episode 118 Bachelor in Paradise: Sad Boi Summer (Season 7, Week 2)
We are joined by special guests Abi and Aaron of Say Your Goodbyes Podcast! Buckle up because there are FOUR HOURS of content to discuss. We see our new host from *NSYNC, Lance Bass! We see Demi and Brendan on a date and he swerves her HARD. Jessenia and Ivan basically fall in love. Serena P and Thomas go on a date - which causes lots of Sad Boi Grocery Store Joe content. We also see a date for Riley and Maurissa, which causes a lot of Sad Boi Cat Man Connor content. Lastly, we get pure comedic gold from Queen Tahzjuan! Please don’t hate Danielle, she lost her paper with the points for Monday’s episode! For that episode, she did give 3 bonus points to Pieper, since she wasn’t even on the beach but everyone was talking about her. For Tuesday night we had a total of 64 points! We saw 4 BIPOC dates with Thomas and Sarena P., plus Riley and Maurissa. We heard from Aaron, Tre, Tahzjuan, Tammy, Karl, Abigail, Jessenia, and Natasha. We only saw Mari, Deandra, Brendan (let’s face it, he didn’t say much), and Ivan. Danielle took away 10 points for the Riley and Maurissa date. We have concerns about the way the date was depicted. We feel that they were hypersexualized for no real reason; between the questions that were asked on a first date, and the rare “boom boom room” sighting. The food choices were depicted as “nasty” or “gross,” but these foods are eaten around the world, in many communities of color. We definitely felt that there were microaggressions displayed in the interaction. You can always connect with us at: linktr.ee/CrimeandRoses. Episode 117 True Crime: The Murder of Gladys Ricart
Last week, we saw the conclusion of the Bachelorette Season 17 with Katie Thurston as the lead. During the After the Final Rose (ATFR) we saw a heated conversation between Katie and Greg, it was the talk of Twitter. Some said that Katie seemed to still be angry to be over Greg and engaged to Blake. This week Danielle covers the story of an angry ex that turned to murder. Gladys Ricart was from the Dominican Republic, coming to find the American dream in Washington Heights, New York. She started a relationship with Agustin Garcia, a successful Dominican businessman, that turned dangerous. Once Gladys moved on from Agustin, her wedding day, planned with a new man, turned deadly. (Story starts at 13:03). CONTENT WARNING: Domestic Violence We also chat about hard words provided by our friends Maria, Arielle and People Are Wild Podcast. Hummus, Hemorrhoids, and Form/From! Episode 116 Bachelor in Paradise: Fiesta Flutters (Season 7, Week 1)
It’s Paradise! It’s what we’ve been waiting for, for TWO YEARS. We have a feeling this season is going to get messy, very quickly. People are already starting to couple up and we see the first kisses of the season. Abigail gets her first date card ever, love that for her. As a reminder, we are an Abigail stan podcast and we will accept no haters. Our BIPOC Points for this episode is 22! Reminder: 1 point for screen time, 5 points for talking on screen, and 10 points for BIPOC dates! This episode we see Deandra and Aaron on our screen, but not anything substantive. We also see some chats with Natasha, Brendan, Ivan, Jessenia, Sarena P., Tammy, Tahzjuan, Tre, Karl, and Maurissa. We also see a date with our BIPOC queen and America’s sweetheart, Abigail. Danielle also deducts points for the fact that Mari, Maurissa, Tre, and Deandra had no chyron or introduction when coming to the screen, the fact that Tammy called David Spade Dave Chappelle (blasphemy), and the fact that David Spade and wells could not pronounce Tahzjuan’s name correctly. We also give 1 point for getting a glimpse of Chelsea and Riley in the promo for the season. We made it, y’all! We don’t know what to say about this season or this finale. Congrats to Katie and Blake! If Katie likes it, we love it! Kaitlyn and Tayshia were definitely the hostesses with the mostest. We see a recap of the season (lame), more of the Greg and Katie breakup (lame) and the final engagement between Blake and Katie (more lame, but happy for you). Poor Justin. Episode 114 True Crime: The 1984 South Pasadena Arson Murders of Ada Deal, Matthew Troidl, Carolyn Kraus, and Jimmy Cetina
Last week at the Men Tell All, we saw one firefighter trainee just light it up on the stage. It felt like he got more air time at the MTA than all season long, so this one’s for you, Brendan. Megan tells the story of the 1984 Pasadena fire at a hardware store that sadly took the lives of four people- two employees, and two customers. During the investigation, they believe that this fire was committed by a serial arsonist, and was even committed by an arson investigator. (Story starts at 10:03). CONTENT WARNING: child murders We also discuss the Olympics again - it feels incredibly difficult to watch from a logistics perspective. Congratulations to Suni Lee of Team USA Gymnastics for her gold medal in the Women’s individual all-around. And of course, we will always stan the GOAT, Simone Biles and her leadership. We also discuss our excitement for Bachelor in Paradise, premiering on August 19! On that note, we will not have a true crime episode released on August 12th in preparation for the premiere. Episode 113 The Bachelorette: Hometowns Heartbreak Hotel (Season 17, Week 9)
It’s Hometowns! In a COVID Bubble! We travel nowhere, but we also travel to Canada with Blake, Baltimore with Justin and New Jersey with Greg in the span of 40 minutes. And then s***t hits the fan. Greg is not getting the response and validation he needs from Katie, which Katie may not know to give, and their relationship hits a wall. But is Katie telling him what he wants to hear, in code? We have differing opinions on Greg and Katie's relationship, which we passionately debate. Make sure to give us your thoughts on social media @crimeandroses on Instagram and Twitter. Our BIPOC highlight goes to Justin Glaze. We adore his facial expressions! We also see him deal with the fact that his family won’t be coming to hometowns. However, we get genuine and real reactions to Katie and Justin’s relationship from Herb and Tommy. CONTENT WARNING: child sexual assault and child murder Danielle tells the story of Kimberly Diane Leach. Kim was a kind, beautiful, and much-loved 12-year-old girl. She was walking from class to class at her middle school when she was kidnapped, raped, and murdered by a monster by the name of Ted Bundy. Danielle tells the story of children victims of Ted Bundy. She also talks about how white supremacy and misogyny led to the media glamorizing Ted as a sophisticated serial killer, where in reality, he was really just a mediocre white man and child predator.

Episode 112 True Crime: The Aum Shinrikyo Cult and the 1995 Tokyo Subway Attack
Last week on The Bachelor, we saw a very strange date between the virgin, Mikey P. and Katie. They lay in the woods and are instructed to get intimate by a Cuddle Queen. Mikey P. and Katie are wearing all white in a weird cult-ish Midsommar vibe. Mikey P. then whispers in Katie’s ear “you remind me of my mom.” Danielle couldn’t pass up an opportunity to talk about cults! Plus Megan wouldn’t let her talk about mommy issues murders. Danielle covers the Aum Shinrikyo cult that started with a charismatic and psychopathic leader. It started with yoga and comics and ended with terrorism. The cult committed a horrific mass murder that killed 14 and injured over 5,000 people, attacking subways in the heart of Tokyo, Japan in March of 1995. (story starts at 13:55). We also talk about the 2020 Olympics and Danielle’s experience in a relaxing float, which proved to be not relaxing AT ALL. It’s time for the Men Tell All! And thankfully, we are joined this week by some of our favorite babes Liv and Bix of In the Moment with Liv and Bix. We see Michael A. break up with Katie. We see the men bicker. Question: where is David, Thomas, and John Hershey?!?! Connor B. kisses a producer plant from the audience. We also see Andrew S. and Michael A. take the hot seat. BIPOC highlight goes to the producer that held Michael A in her arms when he left. We loved the embrace and the show breaking the 4th wall for that moment. Episode 109 The Bachelorette: Messy and Aggressively Colorful (Season 17, Week 7)
This week Katie gives Greg and SECOND one on one. We have very different opinions on Greg, so PLEASE listeners, tell us your thoughts. We also see a group date that is art based and for the second Bachelorette season in a row,  someone makes something that gets the black box. #ReleasetheMoynesCanvas We also see an INCREDIBLY uncomfortable one on one date with Mikey P. They cuddle in cult clothing and he needs to talk to someone about his Oedipus issues. We address the fact that Katie blocked us on social media, Andrew S and Justin tweets, and the Spade and Sparrows recent drama. For more info on the Spade and Sparrows drama, check out our friends at Say Your Goodbyes Podcast’s Instagram post. (There was a big storm rolling through while we were recording, the sound is off at some points, but hang in there with us) We also have a guest hop on for a quick second, towards the end. Episode 108 True Crime: The Life and Death of Empress Elisabeth of Austria-Hungary
Last week we saw a one-on-one between Andrew S. and Katie (the blocker). The Bachelor wants us to believe that Andrew S. is from Vienna, Austria; when we know he is in fact from Chicago, Illinois. Danielle says “let’s keep it international” and tells a story based in Vienna. Danielle talks about the life and assassination (which she says weirdly, words are hard) of Empress Elisabeth aka “Sisi”. Elisabeth enjoyed her informal upbringing and struggled with the royal life. She had incredible highs and lows in her life before it was taken in an incident of inconvenience in 1898. Her life and death is written like a movie, so come and take a listen, as we catch up and tell a story. Episode 107 The Bachelorette: Operation WOWO… Woah (Season 17, Week 6)
Like the episode, Danielle feels so much chaotic energy today, she had too much sugar and rode the Peloton, she may crash at any moment. But anyway. The Bachelorette. We see a one on one wedding date with Justin that gets really deep, really quick. No surprise here, we hate the wedding dates. A group date that should’ve been and could’ve been messy boots BUT SADLY WASN’T.  We also saw a one on one that doesn’t go as well. Our BIPOC highlight goes to A-aron aka Aaron Clancy. Mainly because he should have shined bright like a star at the Great Royal Debate and fell like an ass-teroid. Also, because we are sure he would give the BIPOC highlight to his damn self, because he is the only person he likes. Episode 106 True Crime: The Great Train Robbery of 1963
There were so many Thomas the Tank Engine memes after last week’s episode, after Thomas Jacobs' exit, that Megan had to base a story on trains. Megan tells the story of the Great Train Robbery of 1963 in England. The robbery crew of 17 people stole £2.6 million (the 2020 equivalent of approximately 76 million US Dollars) in a very organized operation. One man was on the run after the robbery for five years before he was captured. Two of the men escaped prison after conviction and one was a fugitive for THIRTY-SIX YEARS. (Story starts at 12:04). Episode 105 The Bachelorette: This Episode Was Dry as the Desert (Season 17, Week 5)
Our lady lawyer friend Kelcee joins us again and gives life to this very dry episode. We see Blake arrive into the house (he pretends to care what the other guys think), he gets a one-on-one date, there’s a very violent group date, which is a mix of rugby and basketball with wrestling outfits. We also see a sweet one-on-on with Andrew S. Our BIPOC highlight goes to Andrew S., everyone swoon in sync, please! We really appreciate his important conversation about race, and interracial dating, with Katie (who doesn’t know 4 countries in Africa). We also say goodbye to BIPOC contestants Quartney, Andrew M. (the prosecutie), and Joshua Tylerbest. If you want to hear more of Kelcee you can catch her on Episode 85, Episode 69, Episode 43, and Episode 19! Episode 104 True Crime: Night of Shame in Cologne, Germany 2016
Last week, Katie told her survivor story, from an incident on New Year’s Eve where she said consent was not involved. This week Danielle tells the story of the Night of Shame in Cologne, Germany, New Year’s Eve 2015/2016. As days and months go by, the nation would be shocked to learn of roughly 1,200 women who are sexually assaulted by mobs of men in the city Square. From this one night, an entire classification of people were targeted, cultures were blamed and laws were changed that should have been updated long before 2016. This story is sure to make you as angry and we were. CONTENT WARNING: SEXUAL ASSAULT. Episode 103 The Bachelorette: Get Out (Right Now) (Season 17, Week 4)
It may be hard to believe, but this week’s episode is ONE date. It’s a recycled truth or dare group date from the #Clayshia2020 season. More hot peppers and fake proposals *insert eye roll here*. The rest of the episode continues to focus on the Thomas the Trainwreck drama. We also see a returning contestant arrive - they’ve hyped it up all season, but he’s finally here. It’s Blake Moynes from #Clayshia2020. Just like Heather Martin, from Matt’s season, we want him to exit stage left immediately. This week’s BIPOC highlight goes to David Scott. He is fine as f*uck and did not get enough time on our screen. Please provide an email to someone at ABC where we can lodge a complaint, cause this is some bulls*hit. Episode 102 True Crime: The Story of the Harlem Kevorkian: The Murder of Jeffrey Locker
Last week we saw the start of Karl as the villain and all his mess with the motivational speech about being the best lover for Katie and him gaslighting Katie with some non-existent tea. This week Danielle tells the story of Jeffrey Locker who was a motivational speaker in New York. Jeffrey found himself in hard times after losing a lot of money to a Ponzi Scheme. He hosts a group date where everyone shares very personal stories about themselves. Katie shares her journey to becoming the confident sex-positive woman she is now and shares her experience with non-consensual sex (TRIGGER WARNING: SEXUAL ASSAULT- conversation begins at 35:04). Episode 100 True Crime: The Padre Island Beach Camper Murders of James and Michelle Butler
Holy crap we cannot believe we have recorded 100 episodes! Thank you so much for your support over the last year-ish. We so very much appreciate you. And of course, we love you and definitely mean it. Last week was the Bachelorette Season 17 premiere, with Katie Thurston as the lead! Jeff, the skin salesman (you read that right), arrived in an old, dusty Breaking Bad RV as his entrance. It did nothing but creep us and Katie out. He may (allegedly) be a murderer. (10:19) James and Michelle Butler seem like a truly cool couple, full of life, laughter, and adventure. Originally from New Hampshire, they set out on a trip across the country. They were camping in their RV on the beach in Padre Island, Texas when two creeps (allegedly) murdered them to steal their truck and trailer and headed to Mexico. Episode 99 The Bachelorette: Sufferkating through Karl (Season 17, Week 2)
Friendly reminder that this is in fact a Tayshia Adams Stan podcast, Tay and KB are doing a great job as hosts this season. However, we would not want to stand next to her if we were the Bachelorette lead, she would put us to shame. This week we saw two group dates and a one on one date. The first group date was heavily sex-themed, and included a virgin arc, of course. The first one on one date of the season goes to Greg, Danielle’s absolute favorite. And then, we get a mud wrestling group date - Danielle loves it, Megan hates it (for good reason). We are not Karl fans. He’s gotta go. Point. Blank. Period. We do not say goodbye to any BIPOC contestants. Although we would like to have seen Aaron and Karl say their goodbyes in this episode. Episode 98 True Crime: The Murder of Amanda “Mandy” Stavik
The Bachelorette is back! Danielle covers a story in the state of Washington, where Katie is from. If this is triggering for you, and not something you can listen to, we completely understand. You can fast forward to the true crime story at 21:54. CONTENT WARNING: DOMESTIC VIOLENCE, MISCARRIAGE (21:54) Mandy Stavik was a woman who enjoyed everything and everyone enjoyed her. When she was murdered in the small town of Acme, Washington, the community began searching for her high and low. Mandy’s case went cold until 2013 when two women chatting about true crime made a connection about who Mandy’s killer might be. Episode 96 True Crime: The Murder of Mark Carson
Welcome to our last, off season, true crime stories covering Taylor Nolan’s tweets. Danielle recaps all the stories we’ve covered, gives an announcement about the next Bachelor / True Crime schedule for the pod and covers a story from West Village, New York (with a little help from our friend Bix from In The Moment with Liv and Bix podcast). Danielle covers the LGBTQ+ hate crime murder of Mark Carson. Mark was gunned down after being attacked with homophobic slurs as he walked down the street with his friend minding his own business. Elliot Morales then pulled several stunts at trial that shocked us and the media. We have covered some very sensitive and triggering topics. We did this to highlight all the marginalized communities that were affected by what Taylor tweeted. It is NOT a victimless crime. We will continue to cover these important topics and highlight underrepresented stories. Episode 87 True Crime: The Crime of Cultural Appropriation: The story of Race Faker, Rachel Dolezal
This week we are connecting our true crime story to The Bachelor finale and After the Final Rose (ATFR). This season we saw a lot of problematic white women and racism all up and through this franchise. It all ended with Rachael Kirkconnell receiving the final rose and forcing everyone to focus on her racially ignorant ass, rather than the love story we wanted for Matt James. Danielle covers the story of another problematic white woman, Rachel Dolezal. Rachel, also known as NKechi Amare Diallo, was exposed in 2015 after news broke that she was pretending to be black, when she was actually born to two white parents in Montana. The story made national headlines and had the world talking, so we had to tell you about it. Episode 86 True Crime: The West Nickel Mines School Shooting
This week is fantasy suites! Michelle’s date is a spa date that is themed after Pennsylvania Dutch Country, and Megan wanted to learn more about the Pennsylvania Dutch People, so she does just that. Megan tells the story of the West Nickel Mines School shooting in October 2006. This was the one-room Amish schoolhouse in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, where a man walked in and shot five young girls, and injured five more. Episode 85 The Bachelor: Flip the Switch - Finale & ATFR (Season 25, Week 11 with special guest Kelcee!)
Although we’ve come to the end of the road … we still need to recap this last episode! This week are again joined by our hilarious lady lawyer friend Kelcee, to talk about all that happened in this 3 hour, Chris Harrisonless, last episode of the season. We see Michelle meet Matt’s family (and listen to Kelcee swoon over John James), the final dates and Matt give the final rose to the last problematic white woman left in the season. Our BIPOC highlight of the week goes to our new hostess with the mostest, Emmanuel Acho! Emmanuel did an amazing job having the difficult conversations about race during ATFR and answering all the questions about Racist Rachael that we needed answers to. If you want to hear more of Kelcee you can catch her on Episode 69, Episode 43 and Episode 19! What a season! Thank you all, from the bottom of our hearts, for listening to us week after week! Episode 83 The Bachelor: Macaroni in a Pot (Season 25, Week 10 with Special Guests Alex and Loren from the Basic Bitch Podcast)
It’s fantasy suites week, and we are joined by our beautifully basic friends, Alex and Loren, from the Basic Bitch Podcast! To start things out, we see Matt have a difficult conversation with his father, who has not been around for most of Matt’s life. We see Michelle’s Pennsylvania Dutch-inspired spa date, Bri’s hiking date, and Rachael’s pottery date. The three fantasy suites definitely are not all on the same level, and Rachael gets a whole house for her suite AND fireworks. The Producers are making their biases known, and known loudly. We hate it. Our BIPOC highlight goes to Bri Springs (of course), we also say goodbye to Bri as well. Bri is the 25-year-old communications manager from San Francisco, California. Bri has been serving us LEWKS all season and left her job to continue on the show. Bri, if Matt didn’t appreciate you, we sure did! Promo: This episode is sponsored by LW Creations. Episode 82 True Crime: The Unique and Mysterious Death of Stephen Hilder
Week 8 of The Bachelor, we saw Rachael Kirkconnell have a skydiving hometown date (that told us nothing about her being from Georgia). Rachael did not have the softest landing, we are glad that she is ok, but think our BIPOC ancestors had a hand in that and we thank them! Danielle covers the 2003 mysterious death in Lincolnshire, United Kingdom, of Stephen Hilder. Stephen was a young, but experienced, skydiver that plummeted to his death during a national competition. Stephen’s death was immediately suspicious based on the way his parachute was tampered with. The question still lingers as to whether Stephen’s death was murder or suicide. Episode 81 The Bachelor: Women Tell None (Season 25, Week 9 with Special Guests Liv and Bix, of ITM with Liv and Bix)
It’s time for the Women Tell All and we are joined by our amazing friends Liv and Bix, of ITM with Liv and Bix! But, before we can get into any of that, we spend some time addressing the most recent Bachelor Nation controversy, the past tweets of Taylor Nolan. These tweets are incredibly hurtful, disgusting, and harmful to almost every marginalized community that you can think of. We do not read any of the tweets, as many contain slurs and violent language, but we do discuss recent events surrounding them. CONTENT WARNING for this discussion. At the Women Tell All, it’s very much a rehash of the same drama we’ve been talking about all season. We don't even see Victoria get grilled in the hot seat. We also see deleted footage of several group dates and, of course, bloopers! There is a lot of screen time for the man who should be fired, and just a sweet reminder, #FIRECHRISHARRISON. Our POC highlight of the week goes to Khalyah Epps! She is the 28 year old healthcare advocate, from Durham, North Carolina. We loved to see Khaylah back on our screen, as she had dropped some words of wisdom that the ladies and Bachelor Nation needed to hear! Will she be heading to the sandy BIP beach? It is hometown date week, and our final four women are: Michelle, Bri, Serena P, and Rachael. Michelle’s hometown gave us all the feels, it included her students and dad (who is our dad now). We saw Rachael fall for Matt … LITERALLY. Bri’s mom is a saint and a BADDIE. We learn about Canadian culture and tasty food things from Serena P, before she sends herself home. Episode 77 True Crime: The Fires of Paul Kenneth Keller, the Pyromaniac
On week 5 of The Bachelor, Sarena C. called Katie out for all the drama she seemed to be inserting herself in. Sarena called Katie an arsonist and says she is setting little fires everywhere. Danielle tells the twisted story of another person setting actual fires all over the Seattle, Washington area (where Katie is from). Paul Kenneth Keller was obsessed with setting fires since he was 8 years old. The criminal profile, created by John Douglas, is right on the money. Paul’s fires did take the lives of thee people at the Four Freedoms Retirement Home and he is a possible suspect in many more fire-related deaths. Episode 76 The Bachelor: The Colossal Chris Harrison Kerfuffle (Season 25, Week 7)
WOW. It has been a week for the history books in Bachelor Nation. There is so much going on, and honestly have to talk about it. We discuss recent events with friends Ash from Ash Talks Bach and Julia from Bachelor Theory. Megan created a summary guide for those interested, with many links to sources and further listening, watching, or reading. This guide is specifically to help white listeners to grow in their Allyship of the BIPOC community. That guide is available HERE and below, under “Links discussed in the episode.” (Conversation starts at 33:42). Given these recent events, and a call for a boycott of this episode, we did not want Matt’s season’s ratings to be affected and the franchise to use that as an excuse to not have another Black male lead. We also wanted to focus on the amazing women of color contestants that have been cast on this season. With that in mind, we have decided to only talk about the POC in this episode. We see a one on one with Serena P, a group date, and a one on one with Jessenia. Our POC highlight of the week go to BOTH Chelsea and Abigail, who both go home. Other POC going home include: Serena C, Jessinia, and Pieper. Forsyth County has a long history of racial tensions, including running approximately 1,100 black people out of the county. Episode 74 True Crime: The Crime of Interracial Marriage, Loving vs. Virginia
One week 5 of The Bachelor we saw Matt, our first black male lead, go on dates with racist Rachael and Kit. In reflecting on Black History Month, and the “progress” the ABC franchise has made with a POC lead, Danielle covers the case of Loving v. Virginia. Mildred and Richard lived in Virginia and wanted one simple thing, to get married under the law. But that wasn’t possible and they found themselves in jail and pleading guilty to criminal miscegenation laws. Anti-inbreeding laws that brought them all the way to the United States Supreme Court of the United States, defending their right to be lawfully married and paved the way for many to marry those who they love. Episode 73 The Bachelor: Little Fires Everywhere (Season 25, Week 6)
There’s honestly so much that happens in this episode. We get the resolution of the Jessenia/MEREDITH 2-on-1 date, a one-on-one date for Katie, a bowling group date, and a one-on-one date for Pieper! We spend a lot of time discussing Katie, her edit, and a confrontation between her and Serena C. We agree that the toxicity in the house needed to be addressed, but we also fully believe that Katie was complicit in a lot of the bad things happening in the house. Also, a cast member from Colton’s season returns and demands to speak with the manager, it’s Karen time! (the contestant formerly known as Heather Martin) Our POC Highlight of the week is Magi! On last week’s episode, we saw the theft of a true Queen’s crown. It was a crime in it of itself. Episode 70 True Crime: The Murder of Helen Bailey… and Presumed Murder of Diane Stewart and the Death of Amy Joyner-Francis
On week 2’s group date, the women wrote their own romance stories of their love story with Matt. Each story was HEAVY on the erotica, I might add. Because of that, Megan covers the story of a murdered author, Helen Bailey. Helen was a young adult author in England who went missing and was discovered in a septic tank, three months later. Her murder may be connected to the seemingly natural death of Diane Stewart. Content Warning: Animal Cruelty (Story starts at: 1:43). We also saw Sarah interrupt time Katie was having with Matt during the group date cocktail party. Sarah was not even on that date. Katie told the women about the intrusion and they confronted Sarah, which Bachelor Nation had a lot to say about it and, In true Bachelor fashion, the words bully and attack were used. Danielle covers the story of Amy Joyner-Francis who was bullied and attacked by fellow high school classmates, which ultimately led to her death. (Story starts at: 29:41). On this date, the women have to write a romance (er, mainly sex) story for Matt and perform this story in front of everyone.  We also see a 1-on-1 date with Serena P, and they go horseback riding and have a picnic. But unfortunately, most of this episode is focused on drama. Last week the focus was Queen Victoria. This week’s drama is focused on Sarah, who interrupted the group date. Like we said, we’re exhausted.  Our POC highlight of the week goes to Kristin Hopkins! She’s a fellow attorney and practical queen (she wore a shower cap during last week’s date with the paint throwing!) She did not get enough screen time this season, and we hope to see you on a beach soon, Kristin!  Promo: Pink Ivy (Use promo code CRIMEANDROSES for 15% off!) Episode 66 True Crime: The Murder of Faith Hedgepeth and the Story of the Most Hated Woman in America
This week we cover stories based on Matt James’ premiere episode! Bachelor Matt James is originally from North Carolina, so Megan covers the story of the unsolved murder of Faith Hedgepeth. Faith was an Indigenous college student at the University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill. We also talk about the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIWG) crisis that both the United States and Canada are currently facing. This case is unsolved, there is a $40,000 reward available for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person(s) responsible for the murder of Faith Hedgepeth. If you have information about this case, call the Chapel Hill Police Department (919) 969-2001, or the N.C. State Bureau of Investigation, (800) 334-3000. (Story starts at 14:27). During the premiere of The Bachelor, we saw Matt James lead his opening speech to the women with a prayer. Bachelor Nation had mixed feelings about the forced religious participation. This week we cover a case that starts with a prayer and ends with murder. Madalyn Murray O'hair is known as the most hated woman in America after she sued Baltimore Public Schools for forcing her son to recite the Lord’s Prayer in school. Madalyn went on to form the Atheists of America, gaining fame and money, money that someone else wanted to take from her and her family. (Story starts at 51:05). We also address the acts of domestic terrorism taken out on the US Capitol building on January 6, 2021. Links discussed in the episode: Episode 20 - Peaches and Cherries Doe (More info on Parabon NanoLabs) Chapel Hill, North Carolina Crime Stoppers (If you have info on Faith Hedgepeth's Murder)  Urban Indian Health Institute Toolkit - More info on MMIWG Crime and Crime Again Podcast (she covers many MMIWG cases!) This week we see the first dates of the season! The first one on one date goes to Bri Springs, who we are both already in love with. The entire world’s population attends the first group date and there’s wedding dresses and paint. Queen Victoria’s reign of terror continues and interrupts everything we WANT to see (insert eye roll). We also see a one on one date with Sarah Trott. Our POC highlight of the week goes to Marylynn. She is the 28 year old event coordinator and environment enthusiast from Studio City, California. Episode 64 The Bachelor: We’re Cautiously Optimistic (Season 25, Week 1)
It’s time for Matt James! Matt is a 28-year-old commercial real estate broker living in NYC who has never before been a part of the franchise. Matt is the first black Bachelor in 19 years and 25 seasons. Since it’s premiere night, get ready for all the limo entrances, everyone saying they’re excited for this journey, and all the sparkly gowns. We’re cautiously optimistic about this season so far. Our POC Highlight of the week goes to Emani Curl from Albuquerque, New Mexico. Unfortunately, we also say goodbye to several other POC this week: Carolyn, Cassandra, and Kimberly. Celia a Slave v. Missouri January 2021 True Crime Patreon Exclusive
This is a sneak peek of our January 2021 True Crime Patreon Exclusive content. You can hear the full episode starting at the $3 level of our Patreon page, link here. This episode we have our MOST favorite guests of all time on the pod … our moms! Danielle’s mom prefers stories from the way back machine, so that’s exactly what we did! Our moms also don’t like it when we swear (same for the person who left us a 1 star review on Apple) so this will be our first curse-free episode! Celia was a slave that was sold to Robert Newsom when she was 14 years old. The day she returned to the property, was the first day she was sexually assaulted by the slave owner. For years she endured the abuse until one day she fought back. Celia was then put on trial for killing Mr. Newsom. The trial started the conversation of how slaves were only considered property until they were criminals and then could be found guilty of breaking the law. Content Warning: Slavery, Discussion of Lynching, and Sexual Assault.

Megan tells the story of Tillie and the Joes: Tillie Klimek was a woman in Chicago, who frequently had dreams and premonitions about people getting sick and dying. She was pretty accurate too! Except, she may be more murderer than psychic. She is known today as Chicago’s most prolific female serial killer.

Episode 63 True Crime: The Crimes of John Michael Musbach and The Amityville Horror (With Special Guest Abi)
We have a special guest this week! It’s Abi from Portal 8 Podcast! Megan bases her story on Tayshia’s brand new fiancee, Zac Clark! Zac is originally from Haddonfield, New Jersey, and Megan found a story of an attempted murder for hire plot that sounds like creepypasta come to life. John Michael Musbach went on the dark web and tried to hire a hitman to kill a 13 year old! (Content warning: child victim, mention of child pornography) (Story starts at 5:26). Abi also bases her true crime / paranormal story on Zac Clark! Episode 60 True Crime: The Murder of Christopher Ross and The Life, Legacy, and Murder of Elvira Manahan
Megan is STILL so upset about the fact that Riley did not receive a rose, so she based her story on him for the week! Riley is an attorney in New York, who went to law school at Syracuse University. Megan found a story from the Syracuse area of a murder that did not have to happen. Like Riley, Christopher Ross, the victim in this case, was a big sports fan and seemed like a really cool guy who unfortunately was taken far too soon. (Story starts at: 1:39) This week we also saw “hometown” dates and got to know Ivan Hall’s family even more! I know what you are thinking, is Crime and Roses an Ivan Hall stan account? The answer is … YES! Ivan has talked about being biracial with Tayshia; his dad is black and his mother is Filipino. Danielle covers the high profile murder of the Filipino socialite, Elvira Manahan, who shaped fashion and television in the Philippines. Episode 59 The Bachelor: The Emotional Rollercoaster on this Righteous Endeavor (Season 16, Week 10)
It’s hometown time! Well, as hometown-y as we can be in the middle of a global pandemic. We see Brendan, Tayshia and Brendan’s niece hit a cute little carnival. We get to meet his brother and sister in law. Zac and Tayshia “go to” New York City. Tayshia sits down with Zac’s parents and Zac’s older brother. Zac’s brother gets to some serious questions QUICK. Ivan and Tayshia do some Filipino cooking, and later we get to meet Ivan’s brother! He’s talked so much about him through this season! Seeing a formerly incarcerated person with face and neck tattoos on our TV screens was AMAZING and relatable. We also see Ben and Tayshia “go to” the Venice Beach, CA Boardwalk. Tayshia gets to meet Ben’s sister, who he says, saved his life. It’s also the Men Tell All, full of bickering and pettiness. Megan bases her story on Ben Smith, who is from the Indianapolis area originally. This case, in Fishers, Indiana, was only the second in the town's history, and unfortunately ended the life of Connor Shockley, who had just recently graduated from high school. Content Warning: young victim. Story starts at: 9:08. Content Warning: suicide, sexual assault. Danielle also bases her story on Ben Smith’s conversation surrounding his attempts to take his life. David Ritcheson was sexually assaulted by two friends from high school and subsequently completed suicide.
