Defending Your Life

Defending Your Life

Rachel and Conrado talk about DEFENDING YOUR LIFE: written, directed and starring the great Albert Brooks. In this fantasy rom-com, a neurotic man dies and finds himself in "Judgment City", where he will have to mount a legal defense for having lived a good and worthy life. Also starring Meryl Streep, Lee Grant, and a hilarious Rip Torn as the protagonist's defense attorney.

The Yards with Collin Brinkmann

Conrado and Rachel are joined by Collin Brinkmann, author of Intimate Impressions: The Cinema of James Gray — the first monograph / critical biography on James Gray in English - to talk about Gray's second feature THE YARDS, a mournful crime saga starring Mark Wahlberg, Joaquin Phoenix and Charlize Theron. We talk about what makes Gray special, why he's so underrated as a filmmaker, and the problem-filled history of this movie's release.

Meet John Doe

Meet John Doe

Happy New Year! We're back with a regular episode of the podcast, with a forgotten Christmas gem from Frank Capra. MEET JOHN DOE was meant to be the "Mr. Deeds of 1941", but instead is a much more fascinating movie in which Barbara Stanwyck inadvertently molds Gary Cooper into the most popular and inspiring man in America.

S5 E1: The Spirit of the Beehive

We start the fifth season of The Criterion Project by talking about The Spirit of the Beehive (1973), one of the most acclaimed movies in the history of Spanish cinema. Set in the aftermath of the Spanish Civil War, the movie follows a small girl named Ana who becomes fascinated with the mysteries of life and death after attending a screening of James Whale's Frankenstein. This was the debut feature by director Victor Erice, who after directing a trio of beloved classics, is finally returning to the big screen this year with 'Close Your Eyes,' his first movie in more than 30 years.

S4 E24: Things to Come with Iggy Cortez and Ian Fleishman

Iggy Cortez and Ian Fleishman are the editors of 'Performative Opacity in the Work of Isabelle Huppert', an essay collection about the iconic French actress and her enigmatic performance style. They join Rachel and Conrado to talk about THINGS TO COME, an unassumingly profound movie, written and directed by Mia Hansen-Love, that finds Huppert giving a brilliant and unusually warm performance. She plays a philosophy professor who must deal with a series of events, including the end of her marriage, that make her consider her past, present, and future.

Conrado and Rachel are joined by Eric McDonough (of The Movie Shelf podcast) to talk about Jean Renoir's GRAND ILLUSION, a War World I prison escape movie that was, for a long time, considered one of the best movies ever made. Its status seems to have receded considerably in the last couple decades, but that doesn't make it any less influential, or any less entertaining.

S4 E20: Black Girl with Murtada Elfadl

We are joined by culture writer and critic Murtada Elfadl to talk about BLACK GIRL, the breakthrough film for director Ousmane Sembene, who is widely regarded as the "father of African cinema." Being the first Sub-Saharan African film to make a splash on the world stage, the movie was also a breakthrough for African cinema as a whole. This radical tale of a young Senegalese woman who immigrates to France to have her dreams of a better life quickly shatter before her eyes is one of only two African films to have been included in the most recent Sight and Sound poll of the best films ever made, and one of the most influential movies of our time.

S4 E18: To Be or Not to Be (1942)

Conrado and Rachel are both surprised and bowled over by TO BE OR NOT TO BE (1942), a screwball comedy satire from master director Ernst Lubitsch, whose famous touch extends to pulling off setting one of the most intricate and funny farces of classic Hollywood in Nazi-occupied Poland - in a movie released at the height of World War II nonetheless! Starring the wonderful Carole Lombard in her last screen performance and radio comedy legend Jack Benny.

Louis Gaudio, our good friend and host of the wonderful Robots vs. Dinosaurs podcast joins us to talk about Terry Gilliam's BRAZIL, a retro-futurist satire about an office worker trapped in an oppressive world of bureaucratic nonsense. Inspired by Franz Kafka, George Orwell, and with a good dose of Monty Python-esque comedy, the movie had a lot of trouble getting released in theaters, but ended up becoming one of the most influential pieces of science fiction filmmaking of the last couple decades.

We continue or tradition of using Halloween as an excuse to talk about the classic Universal Horror movies. This time we go back to the movie that started it all! We are talking about DRACULA, starring Bela Lugosi in his star-making role, as well as the Spanish version of the same movie, which was made using the same script, sets and was filmed during the night shift, when the crew of the English-language version went home at night. How do these two seemingly identical movies compare and contrast? Listen to find out!

S4 E10: Gertrud with Dylan Cuellar

Conrado and Rachel are joined by Dylan Cuellar, co-host of the Great Movies podcast, to talk about GERTRUD, the final film by legendary Danish filmmaker Carl Theodor Dreyer. We talk about impenetrable performances, impeccable camera movements, transcendental ways of looking at love, and great last films.

The 10 Best Movies According to Criterion Project!

The 10 Best Movies According to Criterion Project!

We're doing something a little different this episode! The prestigious Sight and Sound poll of the Best Movies of All Time is conducted every ten years, with the results to be revealed later this year. We didn't get a ballot to vote on the poll itself, but that's never stopped us in the past! We are creating a communal ballot of the ten best movies ever - according to us! Some of the movies discussed in this episode include: The Wizard of Oz, The Gold Rush, Mulholland Drive, and more!

S4 E5: Senso with Manish Mathur

We are joined by Manish Mathur fom the It Pod to Be You podcast to talk about the sweeping historical melodrama SENSO, which comes courtesy of Luchino Visconti, one of the most fascinating Italian directors. In this tale of doomed romance set during the time of Italian unification, a Venetian Countess falls in love with an (enemy) Austrian officer. It's grand, sweeping, operatic - it's cinema!

S4 E4: Slacker

S4 E4: Slacker

We revisit Richard Linklater, one of our personal favorites, and go back to the very beginning: when he broke through with his low budget, talky, and sprawling vision of outsider life in Austin. SLACKER - with its conversations about weird dreams, conspiracy theories, and the monetary value of Madonna's pap smear - was instrumental in kicking off the boom in American independent cinema in the 90s, which makes it a fascinating movie to revisit thirty years later.
