#78 - Are You "Strong Enough"?

#78 - Are You "Strong Enough"?

From time to time I hear clients, potential clients, or family and friends say, “I don’t need to go to the gym. I’m strong enough.” Or they might say, “What’s the point in lifting heavy weights. Why would I need to be able to lift anything that heavy.”
Both seem like very valid and understandable points. At first, if you haven’t thought about it, you might even agree and be tempted to back off your training for a while. But I’m going to attempt to convince you why strength training is a worthwhile investment. I’m going to try and demonstrate why strength is crucial to not only optimal health, but normal human existence. As Mark Rippetoe once said, “Humans are not physically normal in the absence of hard physical effort.”

In case you haven’t noticed, the world is riddled with all sorts of diseases and illness born out of modern life due to ease and convenience. Of course we had old fashioned diseases that killed mankind prematurely due largely to poor sanitation, and primitive medical knowledge. But today we have several diseases that are largely due to our modern easy living thanks to sedentariness, and our diets which are high in refined carbohydrates and processed sugar. Type 2 diabetes, various cancers, heart disease, osteoporosis, obesity, infertility, anxiety, depression are all either caused by or are exacerbated by our modern lifestyles.

Investing in our strength now and putting some in the bank for a rainy day can go a long way when life happens and illness or injury strikes.

#77 - Influencers For Chronic Disease

#77 - Influencers For Chronic Disease

You might not have noticed, but over the last number of years as "influencing" on the internet has become an industry, dietitians, doctors, personal trainers and others have jumped into it. There is a concerning trend recently which involves some of them encouraging you to eat refined carbohydrates and processed sugar and to include it in your daily diet. They'll even post pictures of them eating junk food and telling you to as well. There are even some who tell you to eat whatever you want because as long as you're in a calorie deficit you'll still be able to lose weight. But what about chronic diseases such as cancers, cardiovascular disease, strokes and type 2 diabetes? We know these diseases start decades before we're aware of them in many cases. So why are these influencers so keen to tell us what we want to hear as sugar addicted westerners, instead of what we NEED to hear?

Warren Nugent is back and we discuss his ACL surgery and rehab this past year. Are you looking for a useful set of weighing scales? Many of you know by now that scale weight, while an interesting metric, cannot provide an accurate representation of our health on it's own! It simply reflects our relationship with gravity. With FitTrack's Body Composition Monitor, you can measure and track your progress in a much more comprehensive way. The scale uses Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA) to measure body composition. This means that a weak electric current flows through the body, and the voltage is measured to calculate the body's impedance. It's accurate within 3% of a DEXA scan for bone density measurements, making it the most accurate smart scale in its class! The best part is that FitTrack syncs with the Myhume health app using Bluetooth, where you can track 17 unique body metrics and monitor your progress on a weekly and monthly basis. Metrics like bone density, visceral fat index, subcutaneous fat percentage, muscle mass, Basal Metabolic Rate and body water percentage. The app even converts your health data into a score you can track, and provides recommendations on how to achieve you goals and better your score. FitTrack has given me more tools and data to try and become healthier. It's comprehensive, personalised to my body and health, and I can see over time where I’m improving and what I need to work on. If you want to join me and start taking measurable steps towards better health you can get a massive discount on their website, plus extra chunk of % off with our code (CROSSFUNCTIONAL). #fittrack #partner Hit the link to find out how the FitTrack can benefit you and to take advantage of the discount: https://uk.fittrack.com/?rfsn=7244042.eb93b91&utm_source=refersion&utm_medium=affiliates&utm_campaign=stuart_thompson&fbclid=PAAab1U_xkd3BwkenZECOaDJjc_FAn3BLgIvI06PRUJ8A4qIgi3aq5UiFTjpM

#75 - Is Protein Making Us Fat?

#75 - Is Protein Making Us Fat?

This episode disects an interview by Steven Bartlett and Dr Tim Spector on Diary of a CEO.

Many sensational claims were made in this episode and I was asked for my thoughts on it by one of our clients. I intended to write a post about it, but in the end I had so many thoughts on it I decided to make it a podcast episode.

We look at claims made around the following:

-Does protein make us fat?
- Are we getting more than enough protein?
- Processed v Non processed food
- We don't need 8 glasses of water per day.
- Should we just eat "a little meat"?
- What about Ozempic?
- Should we take any supplements?

#74 - Body Positive Movement - Positive or Negative?

#74 - Body Positive Movement - Positive or Negative?

Controversial to even ask this question perhaps in today's day and age. Thankfully we aren't big or important enough to be cancelled so we'll say it like it is. The body positive movement has gained a large following in recent years. It has been in response to the unhelpful narrative which has been propagated by the media and fitness industry for decades regarding our bodies, what they should look like and how we should feel about them. But is this movement helpful or harmful? Has it gone too far? Is it the lesser of two evils? We discuss all of this and much more in this episode. Order your healthy, calorie controlled nutrient dense meals straight to your door from CFF Fuel: https://crossfunctionalfitnessfuel.co.uk/ If you're looking for weighing scales that will tell you more than just your relationship with gravity, but important metrics like your bodyfat percentage, muscle mass and bone density, check out thr FitTrack Dara 2.0 at the link below. Warren Nugent dropped by again to bring some festive cheer. He shared about his exploits this year, doing the Jungle Run with us, completing Fan Dance in Wales back in the summer, and then unfortunately rupturing his ACL playing rugby a couple of months ago. We talked about bodybuilding and how it has negatively impacted many people's understanding of weight training. We chatted about the importance of sleep for health and staying in shape, busted some gym myths and shared some tips to get through Christmas without sabotaging yourself.

#67 - Why You Always Quit!

#67 - Why You Always Quit!

Do you ever wonder why you can't stick to training? Are you trying to go it alone to get results? It's so obvious in 2022 that training on your own or outside of a community isn't for most people. Especially those of us who struggle to stay disciplined or consistent in the first place. You could do plenty of great, free training programmes you could find online, but this doesn't work for most people. Chances are, you're "most people." So what is the answer?

#61 - We're On A Cliff Edge!

#61 - We're On A Cliff Edge!

We're heading for a cliff edge - an obesity cliff edge! According to the UK government statistics, almost 2/3 of the UK adult population are overweight or obese. But I suspect that the latest statistics aren't up to date with what is actually happening. But either way, it's very worrying. Our society is on a cliff edge. We know that carrying excess bodyfat and not enough muscle contributes to, and exacerbates almost every illness and disease. This includes the flu, diabetes, various cancers, heart disease and respiratory illnesses like what we've had in the last 2 years. If you're reading this and you know your carrying more fat tissue than you should, you need to listen to this episode. This isn't about do a crash diet or to aspire to get a 6 pack - It's simply to start doing something meaningful about your current condition to prevent something much worse inevitably happening to you. Whether that means lifting weights 3x per week for you. Whether that means reducing processed food intake, or cutting out takeaways. Maybe for you, it means tracking your calorie intake or increasing your daily activity. Maybe it's a combination of things. Whatever it is, I really hope you will do what it takes to get to a healthy weight and stay there. This isn't sensationalism like the media specialises in. This is serious! If the last two years scared you enough to wear a mask and take several brand new drugs, then what is it going to take to get you to start making the changes necessary to get your waist down to a healthy level? Maybe this is the turning point where you take back control of your body and your life. Please share this on your social media outlets. It could save someone's life. We provide you with lots of important nutritional tactics, tips and info that will set you up for success. That's got to be a good thing!

#60 - Training - The Antidote to Modern Living

Modern life is great, isn't it? Or is it? While advances in hygiene and medicine have been massive blessings for humanity, there are so many downsides to modern living that are slowly but surely contributing to our aches, pains, sickness, disease and premature deaths.

#59 - With Tom Morrison - Mobility Master

The man, the myth, the legend, Tom Morrison stopped by for a great chat. I've been following Tom and Jenni's work for years so it was great to be able to sit down and discuss all things mobility. If you don't know who Tom Morrison is, you're missing out on some hilarious content for one thing, but you're probably also suffering needlessly from aches and niggles.

Tom and Jenni met in 2014 when Jenni moved to Northern Ireland and joined the gym Tom coached at - they instantly clicked. They both knew what it was like to be so worn out with constant injuries when you just wanted to train and have fun.  Jenni got Tom his first ever article submission with the online magazine Boxrox and then started joining in with Tom’s video content online - no one can demonstrate a bad rep like Jenni can, which is invaluable for helping people to learn! They went on to submit articles for the likes of T-Nation and Breaking Muscle, building a worldwide following.

You can follow Tom and Jenni on social media as well as their website.
