The Reluctant Entrepreneur - Tarot

The Reluctant Entrepreneur - Tarot

How can our Reluctant Entrepreneur keep learning?

As we wrap up episode 18 and the 4th season, we announce the next iteration of the project for our Reluctant Entrepreneur: A Tarot deck. If you’re not into Tarot, these cards can be used as small micro-learning moments on a couple dozen of the best lessons, reflections, considerations, and insights we’ve covered in the past year on the podcast.

If you are familiar with Tarot, they can be used just like the Major Arcana of a traditional deck for inspiration.

Diana explains how the project evolved into this format, and how she was inspired to map her own experiences and concepts into something tactile.

If you’ve enjoyed the series, you can pre-order the Tarot Card kit here: Reluctant Entrepreneur Tarot - Hawthorne Union

In this episode we referenced:

-  The Fool’s Journey is what makes up the first 22 cards in a Tarot deck, also called the Major Arcana. The cards in sequence tell a story, and it’s a commonly cited metaphor for growth and transformational change in one’s life.

- Listen! Mentor Coaching for Coaches is Diana and I’s first collaboration,  similar bite-size lessons on coaching in a coffee table book format. This is where we tried a similar concept of reading cover to cover, or being able to open a single page and get value from a quick lesson.

- The Extended Mind: The Power of Thinking Outside the Brain is a book by Annie Murphy Paul that explores how the brain works differently based on the activities we’re doing, and utilizes our body, environment, and the people we’re connected to.

- Positive Psychology is a branch of psychology that tries to hone in on what is going right in someone’s life and capitalize on that to build a meaningful and purposeful life.

The Reluctant Entrepreneur - Drive

The Reluctant Entrepreneur - Drive

Does having a drive mean non-stop energy in your business?

Diana and I turned the mics back on at the end of last year and caught some thoughts about the Reluctant Entrepreneur project after a Hawthorne Union coach gathering. We discuss the difference between the expectation that commitment and drive to starting a business equate to having non-stop energy and focus. That there can be a way we wish or are told to operate with drive in our business that may not be realistic or sustainable for our reluctant entrepreneurs.

Passion can also be a double-edged sword to blindly march into a business venture, regardless of being viable or not. Jacen considers it a force that needs to be renewed often. Diana sees it as a starting point, but not enough to carry you through running a business.

In this episode we referenced the following:

- The Disney bumper cars are in reference to Disneyland’s Autopia, also known as Tomorrowland Speedway in Disney World.

- Here is a snippet of Stephen King talking about his daily word count, in pages. Jacen is a big fan of the Dark Tower series, the first book is The Gunslinger. (Affiliate Link)

- Jacen heard Neil Gaiman talk about his writing process and limiting his daily word count on the Tim Ferris podcast. Have you heard the audio drama version of The Sandman? (Affiliate Link)

- The Infinite Game is the latest book from leadership speaker and writer, Simon Sinek.

- “If you realize that you have enough, you are truly rich.” This is a quote from Lao Tzu, a classic Chinese philosopher who founded Taoism. (Affiliate Link)

- Stephen Covey’s 2nd habit from The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People is “Begin with the End in Mind.” (Affiliate Link).

- DRiV is a behavioral assessment and 360 leadership report tool.

He tells us about his venture from being an employee, to partnering with entrepreneur services to start his LLC.  We discuss how edges and limits bring up emotion, become a catalyst for developing skillsets, or translate into possibility.

Joseph Castro Jr. is an Associate Certified Coach with experience in diversity, inclusion, racial equity and belonging. He is a first-generation university graduate with a Bachelor's degree in Psychology from Cal Poly University, and infuses these values in his coaching practice. He is also bilingual in Spanish. In this episode we referenced:

- Dharma is a concept in eastern religion, which can be translated as “duty,” “law,” or reality.” In Hinduism, dharma is the moral law that governs individual conduct and is necessary for the maintenance of order in the universe. Each person's dharma is unique and is influenced by factors such as their class, age, and gender.

The Reluctant Entrepreneur - Reluctance w/ Michele Rempel

How can we remain open to learning while navigating market disruptions?

Michele Rempel (https://www.linkedin.com/in/michelerempel/) of Westvyne allows Diana and I to come on site to her studio and talk to her about her reluctant entrepreneur journey that stated in education and landed in digital marketing. A few life changes and a customer request really jumpstarted her journey into the career field that she is still in today, but her roots and passion from that educational background is a part of what has made her approach unique to her customers.

She also explores while her family background is not in starting businesses, but she found that once she started one, she was able to start other businesses, such as a creative art side project. What it was like navigating both the recent pandemic and the economic downturn from 2007 – 2009 and what she’s learned after remaining in business after both events.

In this episode we referenced:

- The enneagramis a strength-based personality assessment.

The Reluctant Entrepreneur - Health

The Reluctant Entrepreneur - Health

What does personal health have to do with business?

Health is wealth. In this episode, we break down some of the overlooked corners of entrepreneurship, which is your health, because of how dependent your business is on your ability to perform. If you’re sick, unless you have some alternate funding source, it’s impacting your bottom line in some way.

We all know a steady diet of fast food will eventually take its toll on you, s when we talk about getting sick, that’s not the cold, we talk about the whole spectrum of wellbeing that can impact your output. That can include nutrition, spiritual wellbeing, time, or stress management.

In this episode we referenced:

·  The PTSD study Jacen referenced is comprised of two parts, a study specific to healthcare workers here: https://www.theguardian.com/world/2022/jan/19/healthcare-workers-post-traumatic-stress-disorder-pandemic-covidand this 2013 study which cited other industries, such as firefighters, transportation, journalists and industrial workers: https://academic.oup.com/occmed/article/63/3/175/1413569

· Atomic Habits is an often-cited book by James Clear, and extremely recommended by Jacen! (affiliate link)

· Atlas Orthogonal (AO) is a specialized type of chiropractic service without popping and cracking the neck.

· The quote, “Give your body an hour a day,” that Diana referenced is from Coming Home to Myself: Reflections for Nurturing a Woman's Body and Soul by Marion Woodman, Ph.D and Jill Mellic (affiliate link)

· Words That Change Minds: The 14 Patterns for Mastering the Language of Influence is a book by language expertShelle Rose Charvet (affiliate link)

· The Knockout Mechanisms a from a monologue in Million Dollar Baby. a  2004 movie directed by Clint Eastwood.

The Reluctant Entrepreneur - Balance

The Reluctant Entrepreneur - Balance

Are we getting a bit too judgey about work-life balance?

Jacen gets fired up about the misconceptions of work-life balance becoming an achievable state and Diana points out some of the judgments that can come along with overanalyzing misuse of the term.

We break apart the term to look holistically at what this balance means for our entrepreneurs who tend to put a high percentage of their time into work. Use reflection to track satisfaction with your allocations over time. What one person may classify as over-working, maybe someone else’s norm.

In this episode we referenced:

·  The Life Wheel is a common life coaching exercise.

· The Todoist has a great breakdown of Time Blocking, a calendar management technique.

· “Have you ever been too busy driving to stop for gas?” is a familiar Stephen Covey idiom.

· GSD is a phrase to step into gear, but what Jacen really meant was the GTD method, which is a productivity methodology by David Allen. (Affiliate Link)

· Bullet Journaling is a type of quick note-taking and organization by Ryder Carroll.

The Reluctant Entrepreneur - Sales w/ David Malizia

How can facing fears help you with selling your business?

Jacen and Diana ran into fellow Hawthorne Union member David Malizia in Boston, and we turned on the mics to get his take on The Reluctant Entrepreneur. David is our resident sales expert and coach, and he shares some of his knowledge about the perception of sales to non-sales-minded business owners, how to price/value your product, and confidence building.

You can read more about David on the About page on Hawthorne Union’s website, and more about our Sales coaching and training programs here.

In this episode we referenced:

· David Malizia’s first appearance on Cross Street Coaching, Episode 11

· Sales may be considered one of the oldest professions, but what exactly was being sold is up for debate.

· We refer to elbow patches on blazers as elbow pads and shoulder pads, however, the rumor of it being back in style for 2022 is unconfirmed.

· Zig Ziglar’s quote, which we referenced in the last episode as well -- “Sales is the transfer of enthusiasm.”

· HubSpot’s Buyer Persona tools.

· The World’s Greatest Showman is a movie released in 2017.

The Reluctant Entrepreneur - Money

The Reluctant Entrepreneur - Money

Money

We have a strange relationship with money, and there are plenty of factors that contribute to that including socially or culturally, on top of the usual suspects of gender and family history. Diana references a 2021 study on the current Gender Gap (The Gender Gap in Self-Promotion), and we talk about how confidence and the ability to ask for concessions could play a factor in the Reluctant Entrepreneur’s journey.

From the emotional ties that we have to the implications and narratives with amounts, often this holds us back from even analyzing base needs or a financial break-even number.  The second layer is looking beyond base needs, but the sustainment of the lifestyle that we want or currently have.

In this episode we referenced:

· The Gender Gap in Self-Promotion- Christine L. Exley & Judd B. Kessler

· Hawthorne Union Resources

· Diana’s episode of Money Talks – Authentic Coaching Academy (Youtube)

· Prince Charming Isn’t Coming – Barbara Stanny

· Eclectic Co, and the founders were on a previous Cross Street Coaching episode: Growth - Season 3, Episode 7.

Leadership: Growth w/ Ani Trejo Barrington + Peri Bolts

How do you grow and expand a collaborative-based artistic community?

I was able to have two strong female small business owners, Peri Bolts and Ani Trejo Barrington co-owners of Eclectic CO. (https://shopeclecticco.com/), come on the show to talk about their leadership journey as they expand into their third retail location in Colorado. They both share their journey into becoming a leader duo in this space, empowering artists and makers to thrive in a collaborative retail space and using servant leadership as fuel to make the system work without directly managing each contributor.

Eclectic CO. was founded in 2018 by Peri Bolts, who has a background in corporate operations but a passion for social impact left her feeling like there was a better way to do business than the grind of pop-up life that most artisans experience. Ani Trejo Barrington is the owner of Two Wolves Vintage (https://www.instagram.com/twowolvesvintage/) has been an Eclectic CO. vendor since day one. In the fall of 2020, the two of them decided to take their partnership and their dreams to the next level and become true business partners. Compass

Compass

What does New Year's mean while we are still stuck at home?

I turned on the mic and recorded some of my thoughts as we lazy slide into 2021. Despite what your advertisement emails tell you, we can’t fully say goodbye to this year as pieces still come with us. The people and the things we’ve lost are still gone. So what is it that we can do?

I talk about my experience with processing using a free tool, the Year Compass (https://yearcompass.com) to try to wrap my head around the frustrations, the failures, the lessons, and even some of the wins.

If you have a reflection process or a way to set up yourself for success next year, let me know!

No one listens like coaches listen.

Diana from Hawthorne Union (www.hawthorneunion.com) comes back on the show to talk about the book she and I co-created. It’s a short format, visually heavy book of mentor coaching techniques, and thought-provoking reflections to improve your listening as a coach. We talk about the evolution of the book, who it is for, and how we were very intentional in making it a tactile experience that can be consumed “fortune-cookie” style.

Service w/ Dez Stephens, CHC, ACC

How can the craft of coaching become something we can give back to our community and to others?

Dez Stephens, CHC, ACC, founder and CEO of Radiant Health Institute (https://radiantcoachesacademy.com/), comes on the show to talk about her journey into coaching, which was initially to expand her skillet in her current career of non-profit work by improving listening rather than diving straight into coaching as her dedicated path.  This ended up being her driver as she was lead to help other people become coaches with a coach training. She combined her former world of marketing and non-profit to create a holistic training model that challenges the current notions of service. She started this work when she brought her process and methods international to Honduras.

Dez is a humanitarian coach, social entrepreneur, peoples advocate and planetary activist. She has coached professionally since 2005, and in 2012, founded Radiant Coaches Academy and has trained and certified nearly 500 students in 10 countries. In 2014, her training school earned the prestigious status of offering accredited hours through the International Coach Federation (ICF). In 2017, ICF of Tennessee honored her and her institute with the PRISM Award for the advancement of the coaching profession. Dez received her life coach certification from Guiding Mindful Change in 2005 and also holds an Associate Certified Coach credential through ICF.

What matters most to you?

In this continued discussion, I brought Becky Morrison (https://www.linkedin.com/in/beckymorrisonbfs/) back on the show to continue our discussion of coaching frameworks and methodology. We dive into her coach training from a division of UC Berkeley and then unpack her concept of “seasons,” the different chapter in our lives where we may need different skillsets as our needs and wants evolve. If you didn’t catch our previous episode SUBTRACT, I’d highly recommend giving that a listen to appreciate the full conversation on Becky’s development of this coaching methodology.

You can access her free content and framework we talk about at https://www.grantleycoaching.com/podcasts.

Becky is a graduate of Wellesley College and Georgetown University Law Center and a member of the Maryland and DC Bars. She has worked both as a litigator and administrator in large law firms, managed hundreds of people in complex, high-stakes, and high-stress environments, and has seen firsthand the impact of having the right people, in the right process at the right time. More recently, she was the Chief Operating Officer of an entrepreneurial investment firm. Now, she has taken her experience and passion for enabling success and works with individuals and companies looking to the future with her consulting firm, Grantley Solutions, LLC (https://www.grantleycoaching.com).

How do we want our lives to look?

Becky Morrison (https://www.linkedin.com/in/beckymorrisonbfs/), a UC Berkeley Certified Executive Coach, comes on the show to talk about two major career changes that ultimately led to her current passion for leadership coaching. She took a personal inventory of what she wanted her professional life to look like by removing the things that needed to come off her plate. Becky believes that the willingness to be coached in the only pre-request for her ideal client.

Survive

Survive

What do you do when you revert to your old ways?

In this episode, I share some of my thoughts as I unpack what it was like to become out of sync and lose motivation in the past few months. I read a couple of quotes from Ralph Marston (https://greatday.com) that helped me start taking the first steps back into a positive direction.

It would be nice to thrive in this environment, but you have to survive first. Reconnect with your values, your purpose, and the communities that support you.

Is Coaching the same as Therapy?

A fellow member of Hawthorne Union, Rusty Mask, MS, PCC (https://www.linkedin.com/in/rusty-mask-ms-pcc-a16438a8/), joins me on the show to unpack his class, The Therapeutic Roots of Coaching starting October 28th (https://www.hawthorneunion.com/product-page/therapeutic-roots-of-coaching). This ICF approved CCE class takes a deep dive into the birth of Coaching and how it emerged from Therapy. Coaches who have a deep understanding of therapy can strengthen their own practice, and serve their clients to the fullest potential. The next

Rusty talks about his path from counseling and the academic world, into corporate life and coaching. He has found that both of those worlds require leaders taking care of themselves before they take care of their people, and that most of these industries thrive on effective communication.

We also discuss an article on coaching regulation from the perspective of a psychiatrist titled: “Life coaching is unregulated and growing rapidly. Should it be reined in?” from Pysche magazine (https://psyche.co/ideas/life-coaching-is-unregulated-and-growing-rapidly-should-it-be-reined-in).

Meg talks about what happens internally and emotionally when moving away from a 20 years in psychotherapy and into a new career in coaching. Meg Rentschler is a Professional Certified Coach and Clinical Social Worker. At a Focus on Results Executive Coaching, Meg partners with leaders to function in a way that promotes the health and well-being of themselves, their teams and their organizations while increasing productive communication. Prior to transitioning to executive coaching over a decade ago, Meg spent over 20 years as a psychotherapist working with individuals, couples, families and groups to create positive change in her client’s relationships and lives. Her extensive experience in working with others gives her a rich perspective on human dynamics and leadership principles as well as understanding the elements of productive communication.
