#303 RefMasters feat. James Williams & Kane Fitzgerald | NBA Finals Officials
#303 RefMasters feat. James Williams & Kane Fitzgerald | NBA Finals Officials
We are excited to welcome 2 NBA Finals officials and the creators of Ref Masters, James Williams, and Kane Fitzgerald. James is in his 13th season as Kane recently stepped away to be Vice President of Referee Operations. These gentlemen bring a wealth of experience and knowledge that they shared with us throughout this 98-minute session. ⁣ ⁣ In this episode, we spoke about their journey to the NBA, bouncing back from failures, avoiding trying to prove their worth to anyone, and trusting your partners. We also speak about why the older generation of referees in power positions have historically frowned upon social media content and what we can do to change the culture. The fellas also tell us about the idea behind RefMasters and some of the exciting things to look out for in the future. We hope you enjoy it!⁣ ⁣ ğ˜¾ğ™¡ğ™žğ™˜ğ™  𝙗𝙚𝙡𝙤𝙬 𝙩𝙤 𝙙𝙤𝙬𝙣𝙡𝙤𝙖𝙙 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙍𝙚𝙛𝙈𝙖𝙨𝙩𝙚𝙧𝙨 𝙖𝙥𝙥⁣ https://apps.apple.com/us/app/refmasters-app/id1640142865⁣ ⁣ ğ™€ğ™¢ğ™–ğ™žğ™¡ 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙢 ğ™¬ğ™žğ™©ğ™ 𝙮𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙛𝙚𝙚𝙙𝙗𝙖𝙘𝙠⁣ kane.fitzgerald@refmasters.com⁣ james.williams@refmasters.com⁣ ⁣ ğ™…ğ™¤ğ™žğ™£ 𝙤𝙪𝙧 ğ™˜ğ™¤ğ™¢ğ™¢ğ™ªğ™£ğ™žğ™©ğ™®â£ Patreon.com/crownrefs

Welcome to the 300th episode of the Crown Refs Podcast. We can’t thank you enough for your continued support as it’s been a driving force behind us being able to hit this small milestone.⁣ ⁣ Gene Steratore is a flat-out officiating legend who’s worked in the Super Bowl, and the NCAA tournament, and is currently the CBS Rules Analyst for the NFL & College Basketball. For an official to have this type of seasoning is rare and we are super honored to have Gene share his knowledge and experience with the Crown Refs Community.⁣ ⁣ In this episode, we discuss the early tutelage Gene had growing up in a family of officials and how it impacted his long career both on and off the court/field. We went in-depth into communication and game management as Gene shared and simulated numerous ways to effectively respond to the coach. ⁣ ⁣ We also covered the superpowers of empathy, kindness, and integrity and why every official should exemplify those traits.  ⁣ ⁣ We hope you enjoy this episode and learn a ton.

Brett Coleman is a passionate 7-year official from Livingston, New Jersey who's been a part of Crown Refs Mentor since March 2021. His goal is to make Division 1 and possibly beyond. He joined Crown Refs because of the valuable content and engaging community that we have!⁣ ⁣ In this episode, we cover a lot of different topics including late game "take fouls' and intentional foul scenarios and how to proactively manage them. We also discussed this macro point that can help everyone- Don't allow previous possessions to impact the current one. Just like players we have to have a next play mentality and we are only as good as our last call. So, this serves as a reminder to stay focused and be in the moment. There are many other takeaways from this episode that we think you will find super helpful. #273 Powered by Positivity | Big Game Officials Camp
This episode is all about mindset, perspective, and the importance of finding your true inner happiness. This was a recent presentation for Sara Woods and the great people from the Big Game Officials Camp in St. Louis. ⁣ ⁣ We covered 4 key traits that can lead to happiness on and off the court: Perspective, Positivity, Passion & Patience. ⁣ ⁣ •Having a healthy perspective that is grounded in gratitude will give you the emotional stability to purely appreciate every day as the blessing that it is. ⁣ ⁣ •Leading with Positivity and optimism as your centerpiece is a winning formula for success. Having an unwavering positive attitude is a superpower that can lead to so many other wonderful things in your life. ⁣ ⁣ •If you are passionate about something, that can be the fuel and the driving force that propels you to get to the next level. Passion produces effort. Consistent effort produces results. ⁣ ⁣ •Maybe the most important and difficult trait is patience. It’s no coincidence that learning patience takes a very long time. However, patience prevents pain, and frustration, and can lead to higher levels of peace and happiness. ⁣ ⁣ We know this episode will be an UNLOCK and will help at least 1 person. We hope this person is YOU!

He enjoys the physical and mental challenges that being an official presents on a daily and weekly basis. #253 Rapid Responses 8 | feat. Coach Sheldon | [Full Episode available on PATREON]
This episode is the 8th installment of our Rapid Response series, which is designed to help arm your tool belt with ready and effective responses for ANYTHING a coach throws at you.  In this session, we hit on some powerful themes like:⁣ ⁣ 𝟭. It's more important to establish respectful communication guidelines than it is to provide a good explanation about a play.⁣ ⁣ 𝟮. Hence, be sure to prioritize the most important topics during your conversations (ex. if they're screaming about a block/charge play, we need to address the scream before the block/charge)⁣ ⁣ 𝟯. The Power of Complimenting the coach when they are speaking respectful is a great way to stroke their ego while indirectly setting professional expectations⁣ ⁣ 𝟰. The Power of Complimenting your partner over a call while you're near the coach's bench is a way of showing unity while providing assurance and reinforcement that the call was correct⁣ ⁣ 𝟱. Officials need to get out of their comfort zone and realize that if the coach is yelling at any member of the CREW, then they are yelling at YOU. ⁣ ⁣ 𝟲. Many officials will not address the coach unless they are speaking directly to them.  Being a great partner can be uncomfortable sometimes but having your teammates back through thick and thin is always the right thing to do.⁣ ⁣ 𝟳. It's imperative that the table side official act as a de-escalator if the coach is shouting across the court.  Many times, the closest official to the bench can play a pivotal role in properly managing the coach's behavior⁣ ⁣ We touch on all of these topics and much more on during this 100-minute communication session. We hope you grow from this!⁣

#241 Agent Zero | Gilbert Arenas | 3-time NBA All-Star | The No Chill Podcast
Gilbert Arenas was a prolific offensive player during his 12-year NBA career playing for a total of 4 teams. He was the 2003 NBA’s most improved player and averaged over 20 ppg and 5 assists including over 29 ppg in 2006. He joins the CR podcast to talk about some common things that players dislike about officials and what's eating at him about NBA referees. Our topics include trash-talking, respect for the game, what he appreciates about officials, and what the NBA players thought of the Tim Donaghy scandal. This was a very entertaining and insightful discussion between a player and a ref as we tried to iron out some of our differences and find a common ground. Special thanks to Gilbert for his contributions to our program.

In our 3rd film session with Crown Refs Mentor, we break down one of my recent games from the 21-22 season. We discuss how and when to use our 3 different voices-Command presence, normal, diffusing. ⁣ ⁣ We also speak about why we talk ourselves out of upgrading fouls and why we shouldn't ignore unsportsmanlike conduct just because our partner does. Some other plays we look at involve pass/crash criteria and a monster time and distance play from Carmela Garcia.⁣ ⁣ 𝙏𝙤 𝙗𝙚𝙘𝙤𝙢𝙚 𝙖 𝙥𝙖𝙩𝙧𝙤𝙣 𝙤𝙛 𝘾𝙧𝙤𝙬𝙣 𝙍𝙚𝙛𝙨⁣ 𝗣𝗮𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗼𝗻.𝗰𝗼𝗺/𝗰𝗿𝗼𝘄𝗻𝗿𝗲𝗳𝘀

This audio is an exclusive interview with former 32-year NBA official Bill Spooner. Bill has worked over 1500 regular-season games and 100 NBA playoff games in his amazing tenure. ⁣ ⁣ In this episode, we spoke about having mental toughness and list specific ways that officials can re-apply the pressure back on the coaches and players. This is a concept that is foreign to most referees but is something we are leaning heavily into at Crown Refs. We thank Bill for displaying the type of grit that more officials need to embody.⁣ ⁣ Other topics include Kobe’s 81 performance, why we shouldn't sell, what to do when your partner calls a technical foul and the bond that he shares with his son Drew through officiating.⁣ ⁣ 𝗧𝗼 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗮 𝗣𝗮𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗖𝗿𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝗥𝗲𝗳𝘀⁣ 𝗣𝗮𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗼𝗻.𝗰𝗼𝗺/𝗰𝗿𝗼𝘄𝗻𝗿𝗲𝗳𝘀

In this session, we practice 4 different signals to improve our form and presentation during our games including the “stay here” signal, the wave off, hit to the head and chucking. ⁣ ⁣ We recommend utilizing the stay here signal as a highly effective way to communicate that it's a non-shooting foul in the frontcourt (post, rebounding, cutting fouls).⁣ ⁣ Thank you to all of the officials who participated in this session as it takes a high level of confidence and humility.⁣ ⁣ 𝙏𝙤 𝙗𝙚𝙘𝙤𝙢𝙚 𝙖 𝙋𝙖𝙩𝙧𝙤𝙣 𝙤𝙛 𝘾𝙧𝙤𝙬𝙣 𝙍𝙚𝙛𝙨 𝗣𝗮𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗼𝗻.𝗰𝗼𝗺/𝗰𝗿𝗼𝘄𝗻𝗿𝗲𝗳𝘀

#229 7 Qualities of a Great Official | The Real Coach D 3
#229 7 Qualities of a Great Official | The Real Coach D 3
The Real Coach D, Phil Diasparra, is back for his 3rd installment as he gives us 7 Qualities of a Great Official. We hope you enjoy! Integrity – great officials are the guardians of honesty in athletics. He must maintain a complete absence of bias. An official holds the position in the world of sports not unlike a judge in a court of law. If you aspire to be a great official you never put yourself in a position where your integrity could be questioned. The integrity of the game must always be upheld.⁣ Hustle- Officiating is a game of angles and positioning, officiating hustle describes movement and court position. There is no connection to speed and meaningless motion. Every great official moves efficiently to be in the right place at the right time. It’s the only way to see the entire play and make the correct call.⁣ Judgment- Great judgment is a byproduct of effort and experience. It goes beyond the rule book and includes an almost instinctive ability to apply the critical principle of advantage/disadvantage. This is at the heart of officiating that no team or player gets an unfair advantage or is placed at an unfair disadvantage.⁣ Communication-90% of officiating is being a people person, know how to deal with people. Listening is important that’s why we have two ears and one mouth, listen twice as much as we speak.⁣ Communication means “can you deal with people?” Can you deal with coaches, players during a game? Communication can be accomplished in many ways and in most cases, the situation will dictate your appropriate response. Sometimes a simple response to the question, a one-word answer, or a look can communicate what is needed at a particular time. Saying the right thing to the right person at the right time can help one avoid potential problems in a game. Communication is also the knowledge of when it’s best not to say anything.⁣ Consistency- Young officials have more difficulty with consistency than any other quality, mainly because they lack the experience to realize when their decisions are inconsistent. Everyone has some difficulty in this regard, but the great officials are unrelenting in their judgment. They see and call a game better than their colleagues. The key is to make the same call on the same kind of play whether it’s the first minute of the game or the score is tied with one minute left to play. If they believe an official is consistent, coaches and players will adjust accordingly. Inconsistent decisions on similar plays trigger negative behavior and poor sportsmanship among players and invite criticism from coaches. If you try and fail it’s a mistake, if you repeat the mistake it’s a decision.⁣ Confidence- There is a fine line between confidence and arrogance. Regardless of the situation, personalities involved, pressures from the crowd, or possible repercussions, great officials place fairness above all other concerns. They act confidently and according to the dictates of that value. You should hold yourself to a Higher than normal ethical standard. Be a legacy leader.⁣ Common Sense - I’ve saved this one for last. Of the qualities listed, common sense is the most important. That which is fair and right must take precedence throughout each game. Common sense ensures that fairness, understanding, and the best interests of the game are foremost in the mind of a great official. If you truly understand the spirit and intent of the rules, common sense will guide you well.⁣ To join our Patreon/Discord/Zoom community patreon.com/crownrefs

#227 Rapid Responses 4 | Dictatating the Terms of the Dialogue | w/special guest coach Arjan Perovic
In our 4th Rapid Response session, we hit on some big picture points and talk about having the right perspective before we even enter the encounter. ⁣ ⁣ This included the major mindset theme of not trying to convince the coach that you got the call correct or prove to them that our way of thinking is better. ⁣ ⁣ Too many times officials get into debates and try to sell ideas to coaches which causes us to lose the leverage by lowering down to their level. ⁣ ⁣ This episode also featured ways how we can control the conversation and stressed the importance and the ability to dictate the terms of the dialogue. ⁣ ⁣ A special thank you to Arjan Perovic for joining us to role play and bring his coach's perspective to the conversation.⁣ ⁣ To join our private community⁣ Patreon.com/crownrefs

Scott retired from officiating due to a knee injury in 2011 and is currently the Head of Referees for the NBL. ⁣ ⁣ In this episode, we recall some of Scott’s classic FIBA games from the mid-2000s in an era that featured some highly competitive teams for the U.S. including Argentina, Spain, Greece, & more. #208 Mentor Sessions 1 | Adam Zohni | Richmond Hill, Ontario
We are excited to launch our new private community for officials and our developmental training program called Crown Refs MENTOR. ⁣ ⁣ Adam Zohni is a long-time supporter and passionate 5th-year official from Toronto, CN, who was one of the first officials to sign up for our MENTOR tier.  So after a few years of exchanging messages online, we finally had the opportunity to sit down and meet for our first mentor session.⁣ ⁣ In this episode, we discuss why he decided to join Crown Refs MENTOR and some of the things that he's looking to gain from being part of the new community.  We also reviewed his referee profile, where he listed his biggest areas of growth that he's looking to improve on.  ⁣ ⁣ His most difficult plays are calling flagrant fouls and managing unsportsmanlike technical fouls with players and coaches.  He's focused on slowing down and being emotionless to have a greater sense of control in those hostile moments.  We also go over some differences between FIBA and NFHS, proper time-out mechanics, and tips for calling double fouls.⁣ ⁣ Special thanks to Adam, Zack, Carmela, Pedro, Ryan, Lance, Will, Ken, Aaron, Joseph, Josiah, Chris, Tony, John, William, Alice, Jon, Justin, Luke, Jason, Scott, James, Korbin, Corbin, Isaiah, and every other official who has joined us for this next chapter of Crown Refs content.  #servethegame

But her rise to the top did not happen overnight as she steadily grinder her way for 15 years to get to this point.⁣ ⁣ She worked 3 years as a high school official before catapulting directly into the NCAA Division 1 ranks where she spent 10 years honing her craft at the collegiate level. ⁣ ⁣ She was also a part of the NFL developmental training program for 7 years receiving guidance on the differences between pro vs. college rules and being mentored by some of the NFL’s best teachers. ⁣ ⁣ Her breakthrough as a football official happened when she became a certified basketball official learning from NBA legends Leroy Richardson and Tony Brothers. #140 Game Notes 016 | with Korbin Cruea | 2-Year Official | Swayzee, IN
Korbin Cruea grew up in Swayzee, Indiana (a smalltown an hour north of Indianapolis) where he fell in love with the game of basketball at a very young age. From a young age he got an inside look at an official's lifestyle traveling with his father on Friday and Saturday nights as he was an official back in the day. Ever since those days, Korbin knew he wanted to follow in his father's footsteps and become an official himself. He turned those dreams into a reality in 2019 when Korbin became an official and jumped in head first and started officiating all levels of basketball. ⁣ ⁣ Now in year 2, Korbin loves perfecting his craft and game in hopes to become the best official he can be and achieve success at the highest of levels he can. Currently in the process of jumping from JV to Varsity in the state of Indiana, Korbin is all in and ready to take a deep dive into his craft with the IPR service. ⁣ ⁣ “I love the value that Crown Refs has added to my game in terms of listening to the podcast and hearing all of the experienced officials shine light on lots of different aspects of the game. I am very eager to see where the IPR service can take me in terms of growth and continued improvement of my craft.”⁣ ⁣ In this episode of Game Notes, we discuss the importance of having good pain tolerance and patience as an official. These 2 qualities allow us to see more information about the play. This episode also includes great discussion on difficult play types and more signal school to help improve Korbin’s table reporting and confidence.

𝗖𝗿𝗼𝘀𝘀𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗱𝘀 𝗢𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹𝘀 𝗔𝘀𝘀𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 (COA) is the 2nd largest officials association in the great basketball state of Indiana. Currently, they have 174 licensed basketball officials and the leadership is committed to recruiting, training & retaining basketball officials. ⁣ Mark Sexton, an 8-year official, is in his first season as basketball chair of the association and grateful for the opportunity to follow in the footsteps of his mentor Tracy Black.⁣ ⁣ “𝗜 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸 𝗶𝘁’𝘀 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗱𝘂𝘁𝘆 to give the game our absolute best. Our best is more than just showing up and running back and forth. Our best means we’re rule book strong, mentally prepared, physically ready and passionate about our craft. We focus our meetings around watching film, discussing rules and RELATIONSHIPS. We have incredible officials in Indiana... not just in Crossroads, but throughout the state.”⁣ ⁣ We recently had the opportunity to speak at a zoom meeting with the (COA) and here are some topics we discussed:⁣ -Advice for when working with a new official. -Working as many possible games that you can the right way. ⁣ -Being unemotional about rule changes.⁣ -You’re only as good as your love for the game.⁣

#136 Game Notes 015 | with Isaiah Langlois | 5-Year Official | Dubuque, IA
𝗜𝘀𝗮𝗶𝗮𝗵 𝗟𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗹𝗼𝗶𝘀, is a dedicated 5-year Official from Dubuque, IA looking to continuously evolve at his craft. Recently, he began to wonder if the officiating industry had any film review services available for referees to send their game tape in and get high-quality instructional feedback in return. About a day later he stumbled upon the Crown Refs content and quickly realized that we provide the exact service that he was seeking.⁣ ⁣ In this episode of Game Notes, we talk about providing rule-based explanations rather than over-explaining our calls, giving our partners a good pass vs. slapping the ball away, and not allowing coaches to influence, alter, or manipulate our decision-making process.

⁣𝗥𝘆𝗮𝗻 𝗖𝗲𝗴𝗹𝗶𝗲𝘀𝗸𝗶 is a 19-year old freshman at Texas A & M who dreams about one day becoming an NBA official. He's made his goals very clear from early on but he understands the importance of patience and falling in love with the PROCESS first. ⁣ ⁣ Ryan is a die-hard Houston Rockets fan who became interested in becoming an official after his displeasure with Scott Foster one game. He thought he could do a better job than him (lol) so he decided to get certified and give it a shot. He would soon quickly realize how difficult officiating is and that he might not be better than Foster just yet. Funny thing is, he became a big fan of his after hearing Scott speak on The Crown Refs Podcast #49.⁣ ⁣ In this episode of Game Notes, we talk about the importance of having a next-play mentality just like good players do and not judging yourself or your partners during the game. This episode also features over 10 minutes of signal school where we break down Ryan’s table reporting to add more strength and confidence. https://youtu.be/IDTx5eEFHvw
