#360 Down Under Dreams | feat. Kenny Widgeon | Hosted by Shawn Collenburg

#360 Down Under Dreams | feat. Kenny Widgeon | Hosted by Shawn Collenburg

𝗞𝗲𝗻 𝗪𝗶𝗱𝗴𝗲𝗼𝗻 𝗝𝗿.’𝘀 𝗯𝗼𝗹𝗱 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗡𝗖𝗔𝗔 𝘁𝗼 𝗡𝗕𝗟⁣

Ken Widgeon Jr.’s love for basketball was instilled at a young age. He inherited his passion from his father, who not only played but also refereed the game. This connection to the sport would later guide Widgeon Jr. down a similar path in the officiating world.⁣

As a college basketball player at Mount Saint Vincent in New York, he saw an opportunity to stay connected to the game from a different angle by becoming a referee during the intramural season. His decision to take up the whistle was influenced by his dad’s decade-long experience in officiating. One day he decided he was going to officiate so he took the train, stole a shirt and whistle from his dad, and headed back to campus to start officiating. He remembers making $25-$30/game, which at the time felt like millions according to him. Widgeon Jr. quickly discovered that officiating offered a unique pressure and responsibility similar to that of playing. The management aspect of the game, ensuring fairness and safety, resonated with him and became a driving force in his new role.⁣

𝗘𝗮𝗿𝗹𝘆 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗿⁣
His journey began with his certification from (NFHS), or high school basketball, a crucial first step that jump started this path. Once he was certified and had passed his test, he immersed himself in the game, working every game he got a chance to work. His relentless pursuit of experience led him to work in Men’s League games and other amateur competitions, where he quickly learned to navigate the intricacies of the game from the center of the action. He mentions having to be able to survive and figure out how to manage the game at these levels which attributed to helping him as he grew as an official.⁣

The practical experience gained from these early games was invaluable, but Widgeon wanted to learn more. Free referee camps run by the late Lee Hendrix provided an environment ripe for learning and growth. Here, he absorbed the fundamentals of officiating, from understanding the flow of the game to mastering the positioning required to make accurate calls. These camps were not just about learning the rules but about embedding the principles of the game into his normal motions in officiating.⁣

𝗠𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽⁣
As Widgeon Jr.’s skills as a referee grew, so did his network within the basketball community. He met and was mentored by seasoned professionals like Ronnie Nunn, Mike Schmidt, and Jon Levinson, who recognized his potential and dedication. These mentors provided not only advice and guidance but also opened doors to higher levels of competition, including collegiate and professional basketball.⁣

Ken’s rise through the ranks of officiating was a testament to his ability to learn and adapt. He absorbed the wisdom of his mentors, understanding that officiating at the professional level required not just a thorough knowledge of the rules but also the ability to handle the psychological and emotional aspect of the game.⁣

#358 Rapid Responses 13 | North Eastern Nevada Officials Association (NENOA)

In this 13th installment of "Rapid Responses," we focused on the importance of establishing clear pre-game discussions with coaches (if your state allows), managing in-game interactions professionally, and the critical role of effective communication in defusing potential conflicts. The session highlighted how referees should approach conversations with coaches, emphasizing the need for mutual respect and professional dialogue. The idea of using questions to guide these interactions and the strategy of admitting mistakes when necessary were also discussed.⁣ ⁣ The conversation then shifted to broader issues like the role of athletic associations and schools in promoting good sportsmanship and effective communication. There was a suggestion to involve state-level basketball coaches' associations more actively in this effort. This led to discussions about the impact of pre-game announcements on sportsmanship, the potential benefits of having student athletes deliver these messages, and the need for athletic directors to take a proactive approach in addressing spectator behavior. ⁣ ⁣ We also explored how new technologies like video boards could be used to enhance the delivery of sportsmanship messages in schools. The podcast stressed the importance of not just relying on athletic directors to manage games but also on referees taking an active role in ensuring a positive and respectful environment during basketball games.⁣ ⁣ ❤️𝗝𝗼𝗶𝗻 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆⁣ Patreon.com/crownrefs⁣ ⁣ 🎶 𝗙𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄 𝘂𝘀 𝗼𝗻 𝗧𝗶𝗸 𝗧𝗼𝗸⁣ https://www.tiktok.com/@crownrefs?_t=8cv8RyeL7ve&_r=1⁣ ⁣ 📷 𝗙𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄 𝘂𝘀 𝗼𝗻 𝗜𝗚⁣ https://instagram.com/crownrefs?igshid=OGQ5ZDc2ODk2ZA==⁣ ⁣ 𝗦𝗵𝗼𝗽 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗧𝗲𝗮𝗺 𝗦𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗲⁣ https://sideline.bsnsports.com/schools/new_york/hartsdale/crown-refs⁣

In the seventh episode of "Coaching in Qatar," titled "FIBA Signal School," recorded at the Doha International Referee Camp in conjunction with the Qatar Basketball Federation, this episode emphasizes the importance of precision and clarity in hand signals for FIBA officiating. We walk you through various signals such as "stop the clock," "three-point attempt," "traveling," and "hand check," demonstrating each with clear instructions. #352 Coaching in Qatar | Episode 6 | 3 mins on Emotional Control

In the latest installment of the "Coaching in Qatar" series, we jump into the pivotal role of emotional control as this episode features a candid one-on-one conversation with a Saudi Arabian official at the Doha International Referee Camp, addressing the intense pressure, scrutiny, and the barrage of challenges officials face. The core message focuses on the mental fortitude required off the court, advocating for consistent expressions of gratitude, deep-seated humility, and the cultivation of a positive daily outlook as foundational elements for mental strength.⁣

This installment emphasizes the need to solidify one's emotional and mental base—rebuilding the "foundations" before attempting to fix the superficial aspects, metaphorically referred to as the "kitchen sink." The guidance provided seeks to bolster the official's resilience and performance, ensuring they are well-equipped to handle the inherent stresses of their role with poise and confidence. The episode serves as a valuable resource, not just for the official in question but for all referees aiming to enhance their mental game and serve the sport with excellence.⁣

#351 Coaching in Qatar | Episode 5 | Managing ANY type of Coach

#351 Coaching in Qatar | Episode 5 | Managing ANY type of Coach

Welcome back to the 5th installment of "Coaching in Qatar" series, as this episode zeroes in on the art of communication for basketball officials, presenting the 'Rapid Responses' system to enhance dialogue with coaches. A significant takeaway is the differentiation between responding to genuine inquiries about plays and deflecting mere questioning of an official's judgment. The episode advocates for officials to approach player interactions as an opportunity to educate and clarify rather than just enforce, promoting an environment where players view referees as approachable and informative. The importance of proactive officiating is highlighted, guiding players with verbal cues to preempt potential infractions and maintain the flow of the game.⁣

The discussion also delves into the nuances of managing coaches, emphasizing the necessity of establishing a professional yet assertive presence. Officials are encouraged to use discretion in conversations, opting for factual, rule-based dialogue over emotional exchanges. Techniques such as employing the 'three voices' strategy—authority, normal, and diffusing—are recommended for different in-game scenarios, allowing officials to assert control, offer clarity, and deescalate tensions effectively. Ultimately, the episode reinforces the concept that referees must navigate the game with confidence and impartiality, always serving the game with the utmost respect for its integrity.⁣

#350 Coaching in Qatar | Episode 4 | A Universal Approach to Referee Communication

#350 Coaching in Qatar | Episode 4 | A Universal Approach to Referee Communication

Welcome back to the 4th installment of "Coaching in Qatar," as this episode delivers essential strategies for effective communication between basketball officials and players, as well as insightful methods for managing interactions with coaches. The key takeaways emphasize the importance of being approachable to players, guiding them on rules they may not fully understand, and using proactive officiating to prevent 'game interrupters' – those unnecessary stoppages that disrupt the flow of the game. Officials are encouraged to use their voice strategically to deescalate tensions, employing techniques such as repeating calming words and offering explanations that players can understand.⁣

The episode also tackles the often challenging communication with coaches, advocating for a firm yet respectful dialogue. It introduces the concept of 'Rapid Responses,' a Crown Refs training series designed to equip officials with the tools to handle even the most difficult coaching personalities confidently. Key advice includes establishing a professional relationship, avoiding judgment based on past interactions, and recognizing the difference between a coach genuinely seeking to understand a call and one merely questioning the official’s judgment. Officials are advised to maintain strong eye contact, use the three voices (authority, normal, diffusing), and understand when to play 'offense' in conversations, asserting the need to stand firm against unsporting behavior. The episode concludes with the recommendation to avoid over-explaining technical fouls to coaches, emphasizing that grown adults should recognize their misbehavior without the need for extensive justification. Ultimately, Episode 4 of "Coaching in Qatar" empowers officials to serve the game with confidence, clarity, and control.⁣

#332 Camp Clips 19 | Having all of your partners back | Join our Community

Use these responses when a coach criticizes our partners or just use it anytime that you want to evoke an empathetic response from the coach after they let off steam. How do you respond when a coach calls your partner horrible? What about awful? What about terrible? Many officials that we've polled on this topic say they would NOT give a technical foul if they were in this situation.⁣ ⁣ We think officials need to adopt the philosophy that if something happens to someone in the crew then it happens to everyone in the crew. No matter who you work with, have EVERYONE's back the SAME. That means having a first time partner's back the same way you would with your closest referee friend. After calling a technical foul, avoid pointing at a player or coach as it can be seen as an irritant or antagonistic. Instead, have the patience to report it to the table so they can help notify everyone. #331 Camp Clips 18 | JC2 Officials Camp

J.B. Caldwell has been one of the officiating industry's top educators for quite some time now and is still as motivated as ever. More impressively, he's been able to build a loyal community of highly-skilled and dedicated officials who've been able to seasonally grow their game under his guidance and tutelage. It was an absolute pleasure. Remember to close down in the lead position when the ball travels across the basket line to the weak side. We are noticing that some officials are positioned too wide and disconnected from the matchup by trying to ref it from across the paint while looking through players. When we properly explain our calls using rule-based terminology we stand as the experts and can avoid trying to "sell the call" and using debate language. If you can't explain it then don't call it. Replacing "on the floor" with "before the shot" when waving off a shot attempt and Ree-in Knysch sticks around for a little extra signal work after the game.⁣ ⁣ When a player begins to trash talk we have to instantly respond whether that's with our words or by applying the rules as written. We've all experienced the feeling of an overwhelming moment and a lack of game control. Usually, these moments can occur during confrontations between opponents with multiple players involved. Being a great partner comes in so many different ways! Bringing in 100% information is one of the many.⁣ ⁣ ❤️𝗝𝗼𝗶𝗻 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆⁣ Patreon.com/crownrefs⁣ ⁣ 🎶 𝗙𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄 𝘂𝘀 𝗼𝗻 𝗧𝗶𝗸 𝗧𝗼𝗸⁣ https://www.tiktok.com/@crownrefs?_t=8cv8RyeL7ve&_r=1⁣ ⁣ 📷 𝗙𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄 𝘂𝘀 𝗼𝗻 𝗜𝗚⁣ https://instagram.com/crownrefs?igshid=OGQ5ZDc2ODk2ZA==⁣ ⁣ 📖 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗸𝗹𝘆 𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗹𝗲⁣ https://medium.com/@crownrefs/sundayswish3-491fad98f57b⁣ ⁣ ⁣💌 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗻𝗲𝘄𝘀𝗹𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿⁣ https://conta.cc/3C7gVt8⁣ ⁣ 𝗦𝗵𝗼𝗽 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗧𝗲𝗮𝗺 𝗦𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗲⁣ https://sideline.bsnsports.com/schools/new_york/hartsdale/crown-refs⁣ ⁣ 𝟭𝟱% 𝗼𝗳𝗳 𝗥𝗲𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝗚𝗲𝗮𝗿⁣ (Enter CROWN15)⁣ Refereestore.com

Team A is in control in the front court when A2 and B2 intentionally pull each other to the ground. What's the correct NFHS ruling? Reporting the correct foul type shows that you are self-aware and have full clarity on the play. Don't rush any of the steps and always be thorough. With so much screening activity in today's game, illegal screens are fouls that we ponder calling many times throughout a contest. Getting them wrong can be game interruptions, so it's important to let them call themselves and make sure we are 1000% when we blow the whistle. During the first free throw, will you cross half court to speak with a coach or is it unfair to the game to be that far out of position.⁣ ⁣ Avoid being reactionary to contact especially when it's initiated by the offense, having a lack of patience leads to reactionary decisions and incorrect calls. Just because players hit the floor doesn't mean that we need to always have a whistle on that play. Avoid speaking in absolutes as every play is different. Whenever opponents are talking to one another it should be an automatic trigger to be proactive and use our voices to de-escalate the situation.⁣ ⁣ ❤️𝗝𝗼𝗶𝗻 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆⁣ Patreon.com/crownrefs⁣ ⁣ 🎶 𝗙𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄 𝘂𝘀 𝗼𝗻 𝗧𝗶𝗸 𝗧𝗼𝗸⁣ https://www.tiktok.com/@crownrefs?_t=8cv8RyeL7ve&_r=1⁣ ⁣ 📷 𝗙𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄 𝘂𝘀 𝗼𝗻 𝗜𝗚⁣ https://instagram.com/crownrefs?igshid=OGQ5ZDc2ODk2ZA==⁣ ⁣ 📖 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗸𝗹𝘆 𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗹𝗲⁣ https://medium.com/@crownrefs/sundayswish3-491fad98f57b⁣ ⁣ ⁣💌 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗻𝗲𝘄𝘀𝗹𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿⁣ https://conta.cc/3C7gVt8⁣ ⁣ 𝗦𝗵𝗼𝗽 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗧𝗲𝗮𝗺 𝗦𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗲⁣ https://sideline.bsnsports.com/schools/new_york/hartsdale/crown-refs⁣ ⁣ 𝟭𝟱% 𝗼𝗳𝗳 𝗥𝗲𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝗚𝗲𝗮𝗿⁣ (Enter CROWN15)⁣ Refereestore.com

Getting together on time-outs is a great way to show chemistry & improve the dynamics of the crew. Be mindful when getting together to not judge previous plays or dwell on perceived mistakes. Next play mentality. Eliminating the unnecessary signals only simplifies things for us and can help us stay out of "trouble". Don't anticipate a foul when and where the contact might take place. This tip was in response to a trapping play in the corner with multiple defenders but can be applied across all lines.⁣ ⁣ We also cover the importance of not penalizing the defense on offensive-initiated contact plays. Be ready to help out on rebounding plays in trail, especially on jump shots which can create long rebounds and extended coverage. Surprise comment from a coach during postgame, stay even-keeled and don't let positive affirmation gas you up nor let criticism bring you down.⁣ ⁣ ⁣ ❤️𝗝𝗼𝗶𝗻 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆⁣ Patreon.com/crownrefs⁣ ⁣ 🎶 𝗙𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄 𝘂𝘀 𝗼𝗻 𝗧𝗶𝗸 𝗧𝗼𝗸⁣ https://www.tiktok.com/@crownrefs?_t=8cv8RyeL7ve&_r=1⁣ ⁣ 📷 𝗙𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄 𝘂𝘀 𝗼𝗻 𝗜𝗚⁣ https://instagram.com/crownrefs?igshid=OGQ5ZDc2ODk2ZA==⁣ ⁣ 📖 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗸𝗹𝘆 𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗹𝗲⁣ https://medium.com/@crownrefs/sundayswish3-491fad98f57b⁣ ⁣ ⁣💌 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗻𝗲𝘄𝘀𝗹𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿⁣ https://conta.cc/3C7gVt8⁣ ⁣ 𝗦𝗵𝗼𝗽 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗧𝗲𝗮𝗺 𝗦𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗲⁣ https://sideline.bsnsports.com/schools/new_york/hartsdale/crown-refs⁣ ⁣ 𝟭𝟱% 𝗼𝗳𝗳 𝗥𝗲𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝗚𝗲𝗮𝗿⁣ (Enter CROWN15)⁣ Refereestore.com

Postgame feedback, we discuss staying wide in the lead when the ball is on the strong side but readjusting when it swings to the weak side. We also discuss how over-rotating can hurt the entire crew. The difficulties that officials have when switching back and forth from pro rules to college and high school. Passion and patience are contrasting flavors that can be paired together to create a delicious dish. Be a chef.⁣ ⁣ JC2 Officials postgame feedback where we discuss strategies for de-escalating trash talk, putting out the spark before it becomes a fire. We discuss the importance of repetition and consistency as the way to grow, make sure to tuck all of your fingers when pointing as we don't want our points to resemble a handgun. Keeping your signals even, straight, and not rushing the 5-second count. We focus on presenting the numbers to the table by having our hand's shoulder width while at face level and maintaining good posture.⁣ ⁣ Remember to always be big and stay big. Here's another unapproved signal we should ALL use to clearly narrate the type of foul that occurred. You can also indicate this at the spot of the foul before reporting it to the table. It's interesting how most of us say hit and fail to report the proper "illegal use of hands" foul. Why do you think this is? This NCAA-M signal is best to use when a defender jumps A to B, jumps side to side or jumps diagonally into the shooter.⁣ ⁣ ❤️𝗝𝗼𝗶𝗻 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆⁣ Patreon.com/crownrefs⁣ ⁣ 🎶 𝗙𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄 𝘂𝘀 𝗼𝗻 𝗧𝗶𝗸 𝗧𝗼𝗸⁣ https://www.tiktok.com/@crownrefs?_t=8cv8RyeL7ve&_r=1⁣ ⁣ 📷 𝗙𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄 𝘂𝘀 𝗼𝗻 𝗜𝗚⁣ https://instagram.com/crownrefs?igshid=OGQ5ZDc2ODk2ZA==⁣ ⁣ 📖 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗸𝗹𝘆 𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗹𝗲⁣ https://medium.com/@crownrefs/sundayswish3-491fad98f57b⁣ ⁣ ⁣💌 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗻𝗲𝘄𝘀𝗹𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿⁣ https://conta.cc/3C7gVt8⁣ ⁣ 𝗦𝗵𝗼𝗽 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗧𝗲𝗮𝗺 𝗦𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗲⁣ https://sideline.bsnsports.com/schools/new_york/hartsdale/crown-refs⁣ ⁣ 𝟭𝟱% 𝗼𝗳𝗳 𝗥𝗲𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝗚𝗲𝗮𝗿⁣ (Enter CROWN15)⁣ Refereestore.com

The 13th installment of our Camp Clips series, Crown Refs is always looking for more high character individuals like Brandon who love officiating and would appreciate being a part of a special community of referees. Our program was built to get stronger with each new member we add. Montrell talks about why he enjoys being a part of the Crown Refs Mentor Community and how the program has developed him as an official. Jake was an official that we worked with long before ⁣ ⁣ Crown Refs and we appreciate his continued support and engagement in our community. He continues to greatly devlop each year and we ar excited for his ascension up the industry ladder. Roger Ayers talks about what a dream come true it was to officiate the Final Four game between Duke & UNC. Then we are back to signal school for tips on adding an additional layer of information on new directional points. As well as covering the best way to change your partner out of bounds call and also the best way to ask for help on an out-of-bounds play. We've all experienced the feeling of moving too fast on the basketball court both mentally and physically. Rushing only leads to mistakes in all walks of life and that's why it's essential to try and master the skills of patience and poise. In such a wildly emotional game we have to be the emotionally mature ones who are capable of being the bigger person at ALL times. ⁣ ⁣ 𝗝𝗼𝗶𝗻 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆⁣ Patreon.com/crownrefs⁣ ⁣ 𝗦𝗵𝗼𝗽 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗧𝗲𝗮𝗺 𝗦𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗲⁣ https://sideline.bsnsports.com/schools/new_york/hartsdale/crown-refs⁣ ⁣ 𝗕𝘂𝘆 𝗥𝗲𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝗚𝗲𝗮𝗿⁣ Refereestore.com

#313 Camp Clips 12 | Positive Self-Talk Only

The 12th installment of our Camp Clips series, Paul describes what the origin of signal school and demonstrates all of the different signals in the workout. Paul provides a couple cues that will help add strength and polish such as - PUNCH THE SKY and Copy & Paste. How many of us have incorrectly called a 5-second violation because we succumbed to the pressure of everyone yelling for 5 seconds and anticipated the call? Practice your hand count with a visible timer to build that automatic muscle memory. One of the benefits of signal school is fine-tuning all of the things that you may not realize. We provide the 3-step technique when presenting the block signal and we discuss the subtle differences between on the spot vs at the table. Just like players who work on their left hand to expand their skill set, as officials we should have that same approach. I hope this conversation can help at least one person who's felt the same way that Taylor has and realize that our weaknesses have the opportunity to become our greatest strength. Remember to build yourself up with positive self-talk and eliminate the language that has insecurity in it. Thank you to tiktok for all your feedback as we appreciate you taking time out of your day to share your thoughts on our content and thanks to Montrell Cade for attending signal school and being kind enough to give his reaction about the routine.
