Ep. 145: The Art of Storytelling (Part 2) with Ric Couchman - Fiction vs. Non-Fiction
As we continue our conversation with Guyanese author Ric Couchman, he encourages aspiring authors to focus on the story first. You can get help with the writing later on.
Ric reminds us to not let the perception of our writing ability hinder us from telling our stories and publishing a book.
In this episode Ric talks about the story behind "The Little Boy from Water Street," his plans for this book and his upcoming works (Requiem for Shira) and "From Faith to Faith"). He speaks about how retirement gave him the time to write.

Narrative poetry. Yes, it's a thing. In this episode, our guest sheds more light on it.

I sat with him to discuss his writing journey and the art of storytelling. In this part one of this conversation, Ric shares his journey into writing and publishing poetry and how this art form is vehicle for storytelling. Ric was born in Georgetown, Guyana. His background is in Theology, Literature, and Philosophy, and is the former dean at the Robert Louis Stevenson School in New York City where he worked for twenty-six years before retiring. Ep. 143: The Million-Dollar Retirement Book Challenge
Today is the course launch of "Write and Retire Right" and I am sharing an abridged version of a digital seminar on how to retire right with books.
It's a very practical seminar and part of the course itself.
If you are 40 and over, don't miss this! We are continuing the series on writing and retirement.
An article by AIHR states, “With people living longer than ever before, many retirees will spend more time out of work than in their entire careers. This poses significant challenges, particularly from a pension perspective.”
This means the course I have created is important in meeting this need. It gives retirees something meaningful to do in retirement and is an added income source.

Ep. 142: Life After Work - Writing in Retirement
If you are 40 and over, don't miss this! We are continuing the series on writing and retirement. In preparing this episode, I did a little research on ageism and challenges associated with ageing.
An article by AIHR states, “With people living longer than ever before, many retirees will spend more time out of work than in their entire careers. This poses significant challenges, particularly from a pension perspective.” That’s much food for thought.
This means the course I have created is important in meeting this needed. It gives retirees something meaningful to do in retirement and is an added income source.
In today’s episode I'll make a case for writing in retirement and include an excerpt from the book, “Write and Retire Right,” it is chapter 4, titled, “Retiring Right," to encourage you to sign up for the course, Write and Retire Right.

Ep. 140: Why Should You Bother with Print Books
Why should you bother with print books?
My recent experiences with "Karissa’s Second Chance" validate the need for print and based on a recent communication from Draft2Digital, there are more print readers than digital readers.
They based their conclusion on a 2022 Pew Research report that examined the reading habits of Americans:
· Of the 75% of respondents who read at least one book in the prior year, just 13.8% said they read only digital books (ebooks and audio).
· Three times as many (49%) read only print books. An additional 37.2% read both print and digital.
· Digital-only publishers may be missing out on 86% of the potential readership for their books.
In the Caribbean, we too, have more print readers than digital readers. It’s been the preference in my experience since embarking on this writing and publishing path over the last 10 years.
I also share two more reasons why print books matter: higher profitability and the pleasure and need for presenting the book to others, whether as a speaker or just to show to friends and family.

Ep. 138: Writing & Publishing My Debut Novella in 10 Days
Have you ever done something that you thought you could never do?
Well, this has been my experience. I was adamant that I could not write fiction. I rarely buy fiction books. I lost my passion for novels about 20 years ago, although it was my first love.
Yet I promised two authors to one day give it a try and I thought about a second chance romance. Well, without any goal of doing it this year, I wrote a short novel and published it in 10 days (February 2-11, 2024).
The book of 16, 125 words was not only published but launched online on February 14, 2024 (Valentine's Day).
I wrote this book to give me hope for a future I desired.
I was surprised by the delight and joy I felt in writing and publishing this book. And like it happened with my first book, two words reverberated in my mind: "Endless Possibilities."
If this is possible, what else is possible?
So, I invite you to take a read. May it give you hope too.
The Blurb
In a world where second chances are rare and redemption is hard-won, does Karissa dare to dream again?
Shattered by the betrayal of a best friend and the infidelity of her fiancé, 33-year-old author Karissa Barclay thought she’d lost it all. But just when she is about to give up on love, fate intervenes.
Hope flickers anew when she is reintroduced to the dashingly handsome, seasoned author and educator, Dario Croft, whom she had met many years ago. His warmth, wisdom, and tenderness ignite a spark in Karissa's weary heart, rekindling her belief in second chances.
But Dario is a divorcee with two adult children, and Karissa is part of a community that frowns upon divorce. Does she dare to dream again; to believe that the promise of a happily ever after will be fulfilled by this unlikely suitor, old enough to be her father?
With the odds completely tacked against them, will their love story end in heartbreak?

Publishing is expensive! It is said 95% of authors lose on their first publication. Ruth knows this first hand after being greatly indebted from her first publication.
The pain of this experience and lessons learnt pushed her to find solutions so that more manuscripts don’t die in the minds of their authors.
In 2020, she discovered the secrets which led her to publish 16 books for less than what her first publication cost.
With this knowledge as well as her discoveries on how to create multiple income streams from a book, Ruth gives Caribbean authors the opportunity to publish their books and profit without breaking the bank (for a limited time period each year through the ASA membership group).

Ep. 128: How Many Books Should You Expect to Sell
How many books should you expect to sell as an author?
Most self-published authors sell 250 books or less, regardless of how many different books they write. Traditionally published books sell around 3,000 copies on average, with only 250 of those sales in the first year.
It’s rare that books sell over 100,000 copies and even rarer to sell more than a million.[1]
If this is the case, how should we measure success as Indie authors? Let’s discuss on this episode of The Authorpreneur Secret$ podcast.

Why is 2030 significant?
How do books or authorpreneurship facilitate sustainable development?
The Caribbean Authorpreneur Summit in January 2024 will shed light on this and today’s podcast is a teaser.
The year 2030 is a significant year internationally. With regards to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the centerpiece is the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, adopted by the United Nations Sustainable Development Summit in September 2015.
To catalyze cooperative, transformative action at the international scale, the 2030 Agenda includes a set of 17 universally applicable, integrated objectives for sustainable development. These objectives are officially referred to as the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).[1]
Chief among these 17 goals is ending poverty in all its forms everywhere along with ensuring healthy lives and promoting wellbeing for all at all ages, and promoting sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment, and decent work for all.[2]
The model of Authorpreneurship proposed on this show helps in the achievement of at least three of the 17 goals.

Ep. 123: Celebrating Jamaican Heritage and Building Connection with Dawn Forrester Price
How can you help children of Caribbean parentage in the Diaspora to become familiar with their Caribbean heritage?
How about writing Caribbean stories and sharing it with them?
This is exactly what Dawn Forrester Price did in her historical fiction adventure series, “Run to Freedom.”
"Run to Freedom" is a trilogy set on an 18th century Jamaican plantation about an enslaved family’s quest for freedom. Dawn began writing "Run to Freedom" for her children, who have been raised in the USA. She was concerned that they were going to grow up in a society where they had to think of their ethnic make-up as being a defining and sometimes limiting factor in their lives.
In Jamaica, she grew up without needing to identify herself by race but being very proud of her nationality. She wanted to show her children pictures of her own national heroes, people who, though enslaved, were not servile...
Learn more about Dawn Forrester Price and this exciting family saga in this episode of the Authorpreneur Secret$ podcast.

The new edition has been signficantly revised and renamed with a new mission and focus.
Its purpose to help women move from heartbreak to wholeness, to move past the pains of the past and walk in their greatness.
The name of the book will also be used to form a community of empowerment and the building of her new YouTube channel by the same name.
This community will be launched on her birthday on May 9, 2023, in the 10th year that the first manuscript was written.
Join the community for weekly teaching, inspirational stories, and transformational insights to enable women to fulfil their purpose.

How could you creatively capture the history and culture of the Caribbean?
A great way to do that is through writing and Dale Mahfood has done that well.
Dale Mahfood, a native-born Jamaican, is the author and independent publisher of "When Trees Fall," the first in a series of Caribbean historical fiction family sagas called Wood and Water. He also published his mother’s poetic memoir titled, "A Simple Smile," through his own publishing imprint, Rockstone Publishing House. Besides writing and publishing his own work, he has advised other authors through the publishing process—from manuscript to market. Dale graduated from Florida International University with a Master’s degree in English Education and is in his thirtieth year of teaching both secondary and college level English courses.
