Understanding How Gender Impacts Our Perceptions | Jay Pryor
Is what's on the on the surface the full version of the truth or are you making assumptions based on your experiences and understanding? For the people on your team who are saying "I'm fine. Everything's okay." Do you think that's true? Or are they just out of energy from constantly trying to be seen or included and its easier to give a safe, generic answer? It's time to talk about where in your life it might be possible that looks can be deceiving and how making assumptions is impacting productivity and engagement of your team. Lisa invites her guest, Jay Pryor, to help all of us test those assumptions, question what we might think to be true and ultimately, live a more conscious life, with the ability to be fully present at work and in our lives. Jay shares a unique perspective on their experience living as a woman, a man, and now as a non-binary person. After a lifetime of experiencing bias and gender stereotyping from several different angles, they offer a solemn piece of truth about sexism and the extra work and energy required just be seen if you don't fit into whatever mold our society deems as “male.” This episode of CTRL+ALT+DELETE with Lisa Duerre is the definition of a "No BS conversation", that unpacks the definition of gender, pushes the listener to re-think stereotypes, start inclusive conversations about gender roles, and create environments where all genders can have equal opportunities for success and empowerment. How to Improve Your Team's Mental Health During COVID-19 | Ctrl+Alt+Delete with Lisa Duerre: For Leaders In Tech Escaping Burnout and Rebooting Their Identity
Do you have trouble sleeping? Are you having poor appetite or overeating? Are you having more frequent headaches or more frequent stomach aches? Are you increasing your alcohol or drug use? Have you been losing your temper more? Or are you overall feeling any chronic conditions worsening? These are the questions that were asked in a recent health survey published by KFF and these are the symptoms that are showing up every day for the people that you lead and love. What's astonishing to me is how widespread the impact of the coronavirus is on those teams that you're leading. When I look back at the data and I have it in front of me, in March, 32% of people said they were having one or more of those symptoms. Now, in August 53% of respondents said that. That's dramatic. That is dramatic and I bet you're having these too. I know I am, right? So between sleep, appetite or overeating, headache or stomach ache, alcohol or drug use, temper, having difficulty controlling your temper and also chronic conditions being worsened, that's what's happening right now. As a leader in your organization, I want to come to you today with a couple of things you can do right now, actually three things you can do right now to help your team. The first is very simple and it gets missed a lot and I'm noticing it really has a profound impact on mental health, and it's as simple as being clear when the camera needs to be on and when the camera can be off when it comes to the meetings that you're having. It's almost as if overnight everyone went to Zoom and all of a sudden you had to be on all the time to make up for not being in the room together. The reality is, people have been working remotely for a long time and they were never always on a video. They could take a walk and get some fresh air. They might throw a load of laundry in while they're on an all hands call. They had the freedom to be able to get some stuff done in the background that didn't take away from the day job, which helped with peace of mind and stress and overwhelm. So I think it's important. My message to leaders today is it's important to think about when the camera needs to be on and when it can be not mandatory, but perhaps voluntary at a minimum. Your people need the break. This is what's going on, and as you are leading your companies and your organizations, you set the tone. So taking a look at your cadence of meetings, how often you're meeting with people and making sure that you can even put in the meeting proposal or agenda camera's on or camera's off, whether it's voluntary or not, that would go a long way when it comes to the mental health of your entire employee base. The second thing to think about that will help with mental health right now is revisiting priorities. So listen, as leaders in companies and organizations, I know you have to close the year out strong. I know there's a lot of budget planning for next year. I know that head count and resource planning is always critical. Right now, it's essential that you're crystal clear on the non-negotiables and where there's wiggle room. So taking a look at the priorities that you cascade down into your organization and then empowering your VPs, directors and frontline managers to actually take action on the things that are most important, and also to put other things on hold. What's Getting In the Way of Performance at Work for Tech Teams | Ctrl+Alt+Delete with Lisa Duerre: For Leaders In Tech Escaping Burnout and Rebooting Their Identity
I just read an article today that made me sad and also inspired me to speak out today. So I'm here today to talk to you about what's really going on behind the scenes. It's not like I don't know this, I know this, but putting it in print and reading it stirred something up for me today. And so for those of you that are leading teams and organizations, this message is for you. And for those of you that don't manage people and are doing your best to show up at work every day, I have some tips for you too. So the McKinsey report just came out in conjunction with the Lean In organization. Basically, what they were talking about is the burden that's being felt by everyone, including and most felt by working parents and working moms in particular. I'm a working mom, I know this. Excuse me, my throat is raspy a bit. So I'm a little bit coming to you from my personal stance as well as the stance of the employees and organizations that I help in tech. I'm Lisa Duerre, and I'm the founder and executive coach at RLD Group, and we help leaders in tech get kick ass results at work, build high-performing teams, and be present for the moments that matter. That tagline, that is really about the work that we do and why we do it, and I can tell you, it's really hard for people right now. I've been speaking a lot about burnout lately, and burnout is one of the things that's keeping employees up at night and it's in the way of productivity. The truth of the matter is, we can't keep doing things the way we've been doing them. It's not working. The world has changed, and for you as a leader, to be aware of these six things that are keeping employees up at night, it's going to help arm you and equip you to be able to get the high performing teams, to get the kick-ass results, and to be present for the moments that matter for you and for those you lead and love. My husband is here right now because this is real life and he's bringing me lunch because he's amazing. Thank you, honey. So this is exactly what's happening for your employees right now. I didn't plan this, okay? But what's happening is, everyone's working together to get things done. Okay, so your employees, here's the six things they're worried about according to the McKinsey report with Lean In; anxiety over layoffs, burnout, mental health, childcare, homeschooling, distance learning responsibilities, physical and mental health worries of themselves and their loved ones, and financial insecurity. Now, you want to think about an employee who is trying to do the best they can for your next tape-out, your next product launch, your next virtual customer engagement, your next closing of a sale. With all of that, one or more of those things running in the background all the time for your employees, it's no wonder that things are getting even harder. I personally, as you just saw, I'm blessed that my husband and I can both be home while my daughter distance learned. I am hashtag grateful, as I say, every day that we can do this together. And let me tell you, it's bumpy. So one of the things that's worked for me as a business owner, a coach, and a mom is to really plan out the schedule with my husband and my daughter and take a look every day and figure that out. As a leader, one of the things you can do right now for anyone who is caring for a loved one or helping with distance learning or running the distance learning in their house is to be very flexible with the schedule. Talk to your employees about what they're up against, where that sweet spot is. (Transcript continues...) ----- Hey, leader in tech! What to Do When Those You Lead and Love are Burning Out | Ctrl+Alt+Delete with Lisa Duerre: For Leaders In Tech Escaping Burnout and Rebooting Their Identity
I just finished an awesome two-hour team session with a group in tech and I wanted to share with you something that I found inspirational and scary. We spent a lot of time talking about high performing teams and optimizing how they work together, it was amazing. One of the things that kept showing up was, and I know this to be true, you know this to be true, people are burning out, right? The conversation was around, I take such pride in my work. I take such pride in my team results. I like supporting my customers and helping our customers and I also have people that I love outside of work. How do you get it all done? I had to come here and I might even rant a little bit right now, but I want to share what to do when you're feeling like that, because it feels hopeless. I have burnt out. I have been in the emergency room thinking I'm having a heart attack, and instead it was allergic reaction to antibiotics that I had taken for the third, I had switched my antibiotics the third time, because I had this chronic bronchitis. Well, I had bronchitis because I was tired, because I was taking care of everything at work and doing my best at home, always. I wasn't taking care of myself and I wasn't honest with myself or reflecting enough back about what was compelling this to happen. Burnout is like a virus. It doesn't just impact the person burning out. It impacts the organization they're in, the people that they love, the people that they lead. It's a big damn deal, and mental health and priorities, it's essential right now, you guys. This is what's going on in the world today. What was shared today in that session while we did so much amazing stuff, there was absolutely a request for help me figure out how to manage my own self better so I don't burn out. So I wanted to come to you today with three things you can do today for those that you lead and love to help them as we all navigate what I'm honestly feeling as a collective burnout, right? So the first thing is as much as you want to help everybody else, you have to start with yourself. I learned this the hard way. I know this with the execs that I coach and the trainings that I run and the friends that I have, right? If you're not okay, you can't help anybody else. So the advice I'm going to give to help others applies to you too, and I want to speak to you from my heart, and the first thing is you need to take a look at your definition of balance. Take a look at your definition of priorities and take a look at if your mindset is everything's important, because it's not. We are, as a society, conditioned to always look at things how to improve, look at things to lead better, look at things to be optimized always. You guys, it's just not possible right now. One thing I can say for sure, for yourself and those that you lead and love, is to have a real conversation about how you're feeling. I know, feelings at work don't always feel good, right? People don't want to talk about feelings, but as a leader, I'm not going to say but, and, as a leader, you owe it to those that you lead and love to check in and ask them how they're doing. How are you holding up? How are you feeling? What's weighing you down? What are you concerned about? You owe it to yourself to have the same conversation with yourself, whether it's in a journal, with a good friend, typing it up in a notebook, right? Being clear on how it's going is the essential first step. You have to reflect and create the space for that honesty. (Transcript continues...) ----- Hey, leader in tech! What I Learned Prepping for Evacuation from Wildfires | Ctrl+Alt+Delete with Lisa Duerre: For Leaders In Tech Escaping Burnout and Rebooting Their Identity
I'm Lisa Duerre. I'm the CEO of RLD Group, and I'm here today because I want to say thank you. I hope you can feel my energy coming through. My family and I were on notice to evacuate last week, and with that, we got an outpouring of messages of concern, and care, and love, through LinkedIn, through Facebook, text messaging. It was amazing, and I've been thinking a lot about the blessings that we have because the good news for our family right now is that we do not have to evacuate. The whirlwind of the last, I'm going to say five days, lots of lessons and real awareness showing up for me, not only as we navigate our home life, but also our business, our community, our world. And I just wanted to free-flow it a bit today to share some lessons I learned real time in case you're feeling what we were feeling whether or not you're surrounded by fires. Okay? If you're on the West Coast, it's quite possible you absolutely relate. But I also know if you're dealing with natural disasters of any kind, if you're dealing with COVID, which we all are, where there's so much uncertainty for all. I always want to bring forward what's showing up with my clients. Today I want to bring forward what's showing up for me and my clients, right, and what goes on in the work that I do with leaders in tech, and getting kick-ass results at work, building high-performing teams, and being present for the moments that matter. The being present for the moments that matter piece is really a highlight for me right now, because when you get that alert on your phone that says you are now going up a notch, be prepared to evacuate, well for me, my heart stood still. I knew it was possible, and I had been thinking about what we would do, and then it hit. What happened for us was we had had enough conversations ahead of time that we basically went into action and we started packing the things that mattered most. You know, precious things for my daughter, paperwork that my husband and I knew we needed, et cetera, and then the conversation, do we take one car or two? We're blessed to have two cars in our family, so do we stay together or separate? Where will we go? Where will we sleep? Who do we tell? What do we do? I started thinking about this just like anything at work, any project that could go awry, any uncertainty and stress that shows up, and I made some mistakes. We had some bumps along the way, and what I know is, sharing mistakes just as well as sharing wins is what connects us all and helps us all be our best selves. So today I'm going to share some lessons learned, lessons learned from preparing to evacuate. Some of you may know I recently was interviewed by Authority Magazine and I shared my passion, a lot of my own personal experience being a woman in tech, and I talked about burnout, and how I rebooted, and what I did to basically wake up from burnout, and then change, well honestly, my whole life. I told the story about being in the emergency room, where they were ruling out a heart attack. I honestly had radiating pain up my arm. It was late at night. I had a presentation that was very important to me the next day, so I thought I'd just drive myself to the urgent care emergency room and just make sure I'm not having a heart attack. Am I Burning Out? 3 Steps to Reclaiming Your Joy and Energy | Ctrl+Alt+Delete with Lisa Duerre: For Leaders In Tech Escaping Burnout and Rebooting Their Identity
I just want to lift your energy a bit. I want to raise the vibration and yet acknowledge how much you're dealing with right now. Throughout this week, I've been working with clients and fundamentally the pull through has been, how to get it all done, how to be okay. And honestly, who's okay, right now? I think everybody has the tremendous compounding pressures of work and home, California is on fire, we've got a pandemic. I don't even have to lay it all out there, you guys know what's going on. And throughout the coaching sessions I've done, I was just even interviewed on a podcast before coming on here today and the question is, what to do with all of it. How to be okay when you're not okay. And one of the questions that keeps showing up is, am I burnt out? Am I burning out? How can I run this marathon right now with so many pressures going on? And I actually took some notes when I was answering the question and pulled some themes through to give you a micro step you can do. I'm not here to tell you how to change everything overnight and give you more work to do. What I do want to do today is tell you, you're not alone. Tell you that the fact that you're even asking this question is a good sign. And I want to give you a couple of insights that I've shared with clients and I've shared on the podcast today with regards to what I know worked for me when I was burning out. And what I know and have seen working with my clients, giving them just that dose of energy, that dose of inspiration and just a moment to breathe, to actually get clear on what really matters. So if you're feeling that today, this is for you. And I'm actually going to reference my notes to be very succinct. Sometimes I just riff and I talk but this is a flow that I know works. That will not overwhelm you, will give you more energy and clarity. So the first thing that I want to highlight for you is, even asking the question is critical right now. Am I burning out? Am I myself? So the first step is to ask, it's to look inside and to just see what your gut says. Now for me, when I was burning out, I was so busy being busy and less productive and more resentful and coping through sugar. I don't think I would have answered the question for myself that clearly. So, one way to do that is ask the question and then what you really want to do is, figure out how you're feeling because how you're feeling is going to be an indicator. This week I had clients tell me everything is a certain way or it always happens this way, or nobody cares. Or these words around compartmentalizing everything and making black or white thinking can be a sign of burnout. And it's at least a sign of high stress where you're basically looking at this through a lens, that's honestly, not true. It's never everything or always or everybody. So if you're feeling that way and noticing that language, jot down what that is for you and then look for areas where that's not true, to try and get your perspective back. Talk to a friend, talk to a colleague, journal about it. Somehow, even when my clients are talking to me, we find ways where not everything is as it appears. That alone will give you perspective to then take the next right step. Another sign is if you're feeling angry or resentful. (Transcript continues...) ----- Hey, leader in tech! 3 Ways to Communicate Better as a Leader in Tech | Ctrl+Alt+Delete with Lisa Duerre: For Leaders In Tech Escaping Burnout and Rebooting Their Identity
Hey everybody, I wanted to come to you today because for the last two weeks, I've held multiple executive coaching sessions and two training webinars with cohorts, and this conversation continues to show up and weave into the different discussions I'm having. I think it's worth bringing to you today because the reality is, people are tired. People are super tired. Leaders are tired. Employees are tired, families are tired and what's happening in the conversations I'm having with my clients is they're trying to figure out where this breakdown in communication is happening. People are missing some of the communication key points. In some cases, people are off working on deliverables they think they're supposed to be doing, and that's not even what was intended. What's been happening is I've been coaching and guiding leaders in tech specifically on how to increase your leadership effectiveness as a leader in tech in these unprecedented times. So I'm here today to share with you three things you can do to increase your effectiveness while you're remote with the world coming down on you and everything happening for your teams too. So let me start with just a little bit of context for you and say, what worked for you when you were in the office, and what worked for you pre-pandemic, and what worked for you before all of the racial unrest that is going on and all of this energy that's happening. Those things aren't working right now. I think we need to call that first. I think it's very important to just know that things have changed and you're going to have to, as the leader get really clear and very intentional with how you want to be received as a leader right now and the impact you want to have in this time. I'm Lisa Duerre. I am the CEO and Co-founder of RLD Group, and I help leaders in tech get kick ass results at work, build, and lead high performing teams and be present for the moments that matter. So what I'm going to share with you today, actually pull through and every one of the things that I work on and I've broken it down. I even have some notes here so I don't miss one thing that's important. What I'd like to say to you right off the bat is how lucky is your team? How lucky is your team that they work for you, and that you're watching this right now, so that you can be an even better communicator to those that you are leading? The first thing to know right away, you're going to need to be more explicit and direct and intentional than you've ever been before. Explicit, direct, and intentional are important because people aren't in the room with you. It's not easy for them to circle back to your desk and ask you a followup question or watch your mannerisms as you finish a meeting. Perhaps even run into you in the parking lot. What's happening now is people are seeing you in very micro moments, very focused moments in your meetings and such and they're not able to read the larger things going on. So you're going to need to be very direct and explicit and intentional. So the first thing I want to say with this around intentions, is what do you want your team to know, do and have in each of the conversations that you're having? It's very important, and I wrote my notes here. So I don't want to miss this. It's really important for you to know that ahead of time. This isn't something you can wing right now and just make it up on the fly. Even five minutes before your meetings, your team meetings, or your one-on-ones, think about your intention. What is the goal of the meeting and what is it you want your employee to know, to do, to have, and to even feel? Okay? (Transcript continues...) ----- Hey, leader in tech!
