Ku'uipo Kumukahi - Hawaiian Musician and Cultural Practitioner

Ku'uipo Kumukahi - Hawaiian Musician and Cultural Practitioner

I am from the island of Hawaiʻi.  Raised on family ʻāina that was given to my great great grandfather through a Royal Patent Land Grant in 1850.  I am the 5th generation to be raised on family land with all of our kupuna, including my parents, buried on the property. My father was a manaleo, native Hawaiian speaker and chose not to teach me ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi as he reflected on his time of being punished in school for speaking Hawaiian.  Growing up, I intently watched and learned from my parents. My mother, a nurse, loved working with adults with mental illness who needed someone in their lives to see them through their issues - she used the art of inclusion to build their purpose in life. My fatherʻs knew how to deal in a western space at the same time being true to his ancestral knowledge and protective of all things Hawaiian - kind yet a force to reckon with.

These features led me to do what I am doing today in a heavily cultivated western non-Hawaiian space.

I have a kuleana that requires me to mālama with aloha with an end goal of pono.

Iʻve been a musician in Waikīkī for 3 decades, recorded several recordings, garnered several awards for music and a couple for community engagement. I worked at a non-profit organization for near;y 20 years serving adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Iʻve been at the Hyatt Regency for 7 years as their Director of Hawaiian Culture and Community Relations.  Along with some friends we created a small community organization called The Hawaiian Music Perpetuation Society - preserve, promote, perpetuate Mele Hawaiʻi.

Culture with Ka Mahina Project - Sharing mo’olelo that deepen our ‘ike with the Mahina (moon)

Culture with Ka Mahina Project - Sharing mo’olelo that deepen our ‘ike with the Mahina (moon)

A lifelong learner, Hiʻilani Shibata has spent the last 20 years in the field of education, both formal and informal. Born and raised in Hilo, Hawaiʻi, she moved to the island of Oʻahu to attend the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa where she graduated with a BA in ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi. While finishing her last year in college she was also teaching ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi at Kailua Intermediate school part time and realized that formal education was not her calling. She then joined the education department of the Bishop Museum where she blossomed in informal education in which sharing the Hawaiian culture through the kūpuna was the mission and she was able to travel all over Hawaiʻi and the United States to share the aloha of our kanaka ʻoiwi. Hiʻilani dedicated 12 years of her life as the Education Operations Manager at the Bishop Museum and ended that chapter of her life to start a family. Today she still does contract work as a Hawaiian Culture trainer and consultant, she is a full time kumu a Hawaiian focused Charter School, Ka Waihona o ka Naʻauao in Nānākuli, and her small ʻohana mālama ʻāina in Waiāhole. She is the co-founder of Ka Mahina Project, a mission driven Hina led Native Hawaiian healing project and she is the mother of 4 keiki.

Consuelo Gouveia & Trevor Atkins of Hālau Kū Māna Charter School

Consuelo Gouveia & Trevor Atkins of Hālau Kū Māna Charter School

Consuelo Gouveia was born and raised on the island of Lāna'i. This is the start of her 20th year as a teacher and her 14th year at HKM.  She started my career in the DOE and was wanting something different.  HKM holds a special place for her as she spent majority of her career here.  The teachings and pedagogy of this school was the means and ways of how she learned growing up on the tiny island of Lāna'i. She started at HKM as Program Director and moved back to the classroom to teach grade 6 and then helped open up the elementary division of the school to include grades 4 and 5. From 4th through 6th grade, students learn about the ahupuaʻa system of land management and how changes in that system over time have impacted the people and culture of Hawaiʻi. She currently teaches grades 4 and 5 Papa Kīhāpai.

Culture of Big Island and Family Business, Fish Flags

Culture of Big Island and Family Business, Fish Flags

In January 2017 Sun Dot changed ownership and was passed down to Viv's niece, Christina Henline. Tina was born in Kailua, O'ahu and raised in Hilo on the Big Island of Hawai'i. After high school, she moved to Noosa Heads, Australia to attend college and ended up staying in Australia for 13 years, focusing on building her knowledge in business, tourism and teaching. She recently returned to Hawaii and began substitute teaching at schools across the island.  Tina has expanded the business to include a range of Kids and Men's T-shirts, Hats, Pouches and other ocean-related accessories. She enjoys collaborating with other local businesses and in April 2018 launched the first line of Sundot Swimwear with Veronica Hill, owner of Cherry Blossom Bottoms.  What originally began as a hobby for Dorsey has now become a world-renowned and recognized business in the fishing industry. We are proud of our roots and foundation in Hawaii and aim to perpetuate our culture through our high-quality products, friendly service and support of local non-profit businesses and events.  Our family is still deeply rooted in a variety of ocean-related sports and activities and regularly enjoy sunsets together.

Micronesian Culture with Ozeky Orphin

Micronesian Culture with Ozeky Orphin

OZEKY is the name everyone knows me by . I am just an ordinary island boy , struggling and trying  to live life to its fullest here on Hawaii to support and provide for my small family.   I was born in chuuk and was relocated to Guam for better education in 1990’s . From Guam to Seattle and Seattle to Honolulu.   With an undeniable passion for music I started playing keyboard at a young age . Growing up Music was always my run to hobby. I play for my Elementary school choir, for churches & lastly for fun.   I started releasing albums year after year until it finally captured the whole FSM ears .   Music has been an Integral part of my life , that whenever I don’t find the time or the opportunity to create beats, make music , I don’t feel whole , as if something is missing until I come home from work , sit down by my keyboard and relax myself with some sweet melody.   I am now busy with Other projects through work which I do catering and partnered with Da Spot Health and Juices servicing the whole Local community here in Hawaii. I am also involved with the Chuukese community ( Micronesian ) to better educate our young youth.   “Notable past performance gave me the courage to sway by the wave of what TODAY brings, for I know yesterday is past and tomorrow never comes” - Ozeky   Always put your trust in Gods hands for he has the key to your future and the light of your path to guide you through it all.
