Curious Pavel - History meets Travel

By Curious Pavel

Welcome to the Curious Pavel Podcast Sessions, hosted by the most positive person you will ever meet.

We get in touch with tour guides or knowledgeable locals and ask them about their area, so you don't have to. We speak about food, drinks, accommodation, prices, and sightseeing.

That way you can:

1) Travel remotely in the comfort of your chair
2) Have a guide book when you decide to visit the destination in person

Occasionally, we throw a curious travel story 😉

Learn something new with every episode 📚

The show is running weekly. New episode every Sunday, 2 PM (UK)

HOW TO MAKE MONEY WHILE TRAVELING * Tips From a Digital Nomad * S02E16

Making money while travelling around the world has always been a question mark for many. For this interview, I sat down with Rhonda who has been a digital nomad since 2013 and has been making a living through different sources. I am a believer in this and it is the way I prefer it, too. Two are my main reasons: 1) if you get cut off from one source of income due to reasons like a pandemic, then you are in a bit of a pickle; 2) this adds variety which is something I love.  We discussed different options with Rhonda. And the beauty is that you can do these even if you are staying in your place, and not travelling much.

► About the guest:

"Hi, I’m Rambling Rhonda Effron Brown, a sixty and sassy full-time global nomad since 2013, in love with life and the world.  I’ve learned to follow my spirit that’s taught me how to live rootless and unafraid, create income streams out of hobbies and fully embrace my love of helping others.  Proud mom of 3 wonderful creative and self-confident humans (CharlaVail, Tanner, and Connor) who recognize their individual gifts and are doing their parts to help leave this world a better place.  Blessed 16 years ago by finding a soul mate in my sweet man Ryan.  A musical artist, he’s been happy to follow my lead as we’ve done several laps around the US and the globe making friends and memories everywhere we go.  I invite anyone who’s interested to travel along with us virtually and let me know if I can help with my life wisdom or nomadic know-how. #RamblingRhonda"

Travel to Malaga, Spain * Malaga Travel Guide | S01E15

Travel to Malaga, Spain * Malaga Travel Guide | S01E15

Travel to Malaga, Spain! A walking tour with a guide in the Spanish city ► The Phoenicians first colonized the city of Malaga in 1000 B.C. and named it Malaka. The name of the city probably came from the Phoenician word 'Malac' which means 'to salt'.  The Phoenicians settled along the river, which was the fish-salting center.

The beautiful city of Malaga offers around 330 sunny days in the year!

*Alcazaba*

Malaga was under Moorish rule for over 7 centuries. It is not a surprise that you can find an Alcazaba here. The word Alcazaba means a Moorish fortification in Spain and Portugal. It literally translates as a walled fortification in a city and this particular Alcazaba is the best-preserved Alcazaba in the whole of Spain!

Cathedrals can be found all around the world but that's not the case with Alcazabas. This is probably the most important landmark in Malaga.  Curious Fact: This Alcazaba was never taken by force throughout history!  Once, 7 000 Malagueños defended the castle against 80 000 Christians.

What is it like to be a travel nomad at the age of 60 * S02E15

When people hear about "travel nomads" usually think of people in their early 20s. Well, I am excited to meet you with Rhonda. If you ask her about her age she will say "I am sixty and sassy", and I can guarantee you the sassy part is more than true! In fact, I am sure you will find that by yourself if you listen to this episode even for a while.

WHY WE CHANGE TIME - Daylight Saving Time Explained in 4 min (DST) * S01E13

WHY WE CHANGE TIME - Daylight Saving Time Explained in 4 min (DST) * S01E13

Why do we change to DST or Daylight Saving Time? History is happy to explain this to us. It goes back to Benjamin Franklin who only mentioned it in an essay in the 18th century. George Hudson, who was born in New Zealand, introduced it for the first time almost 100 years later. But the first countries to implement it were the German Empire and Austro-Hungary in 1916 in order to save money from electricity and put them into war production. DST was used in WWI & WWII by other countries as well, following these two. It was a bit confusing at times as every country (and sometimes region) was choosing for itself. Nowadays it is a bit more standardized.

Life on a CRUISE SHIP as an employee - PROS & CONS * S02E14 - What is it like to work and travel on a cruise ship

Cruise ships: getting on a cruise might be nice but what is the case when it comes to living on a cruise ship. I used to live on an anchored ship so I have a slight idea of what it is to live on a ship but it was interesting to hear what is the case with the cruise ships. So I invited a girl that used to live on one.

A Stranger in Havana Asked Me To MEET HIS SISTER | Travel Podcast S02E13

Last week on the show we talked about travelling as a solo traveller. When you travel by yourself you can expand your horizon, make new friends, and be alone with your thoughts. Those are just some of the benefits of travelling by yourself but as you can imagine, there are downsides to it as well. You are a little bit more likely to have awkward situations and conversations.

Dealing With Loneliness as a Solo Traveller | Ideas For Making Friends on The Road S02E12

Dealing With Loneliness as a Solo Traveller | Ideas For Making Friends on The Road S02E12

I tried solo travelling myself and found that it is not something that really fits me. I was very keen on hearing what Juleen has to say on the subject and we ended up discussing ways to meet people and make friends while travelling solo.

► About the guest:

Juleen is a Jamaican lover of travel, wine, and the beach. Although she always had a desire to travel, it wasn't until she left Jamaica to attend college in the United States that her dream was actually realised. During her junior year, she spent a year living and studying in Europe (Italy and Hungary), while visiting other countries. It was during this time that her love of solo travel grew strongest. These days, Juleen hosts carnival- and wine-related group trips for solo travellers through her business Jump & Wine Travel. She also hosts weekly wine reviews on her social media accounts.

=====

► Mentions in the Podcast:

- Use dating apps to meet locals and other travellers. I usually change my dating app bio to state that I'm visiting the city until a certain date and that I'm looking for people to meet up with or someone to show me around.

- Join travel Facebook groups. Before and during a trip, I usually, post in my travel groups asking for recommendations of things to do and ask if anyone else is in the area and would like to meet up for a meal or to do an activity.

- Be willing to get out of your comfort zone and talk to strangers. If you are out and see another person by themself, try to strike up a conversation.  - Staying in hostels is great for meeting other travellers. That means, from the get-go, you have something in common, you love to travel and are exploring the same city. From there, you might meet people to go grab a meal with or go do an activity you are both interested in.

- Participate in group activities. Walking tours or activities hosted by hostels, for example, are great places to meet others. During a walking tour, when the tour guide isn't talking, you can interact with the people around you. Even if you don't meet people you want to hang out with afterwards, you get in some social time.

Tim's goal is to visit all 50 US states by he's 50. His deadline is Feb 2023!

Travel anywhere with only 5 KG of luggage ft @the5kilotraveller | EP VIII

Travel anywhere with only 5 KG of luggage ft @the5kilotraveller | EP VIII

Everybody I know travels with a lot of luggage! Most people actually travel with more stuff that will be needed! But now I am proud to say I know somebody who travels with 5 kilos only. Anywhere! No matter a long or a short trip. Her name is Katherine and she shares some really interesting tips on the subject. Also, how she started travelling with only hand luggage, why she keeps doing it and what she learned from it!

=====

Katherine is a 5 Kilo Traveller from New Zealand. She loves to travel, and her passion is teaching people to travel with less luggage (not necessarily 5 kilos or 11 pounds - just less), so people stop struggling with heavy bags.   " I initially travelled with a small bag as I was a solo female traveller and needed to feel safe and confident. Travelling with a small carry-on bag gave me this confidence and security. It also gave me the convenience of sightseeing and not having to lock my bag up somewhere or check-in early. My bag was able to be with me at all times, so I didn’t have to wait for it getting off planes or trains. I could get around very easily on local transport – in China, I got a ride on a scooter to my accommodation - try that with a suitcase!"  "Travelling light makes travel easy and liberating. I have fewer decisions to make. I don’t lose things. Packing and unpacking is easy."

I’m Jack, I grew up in Essex and London has always been a fascinating and exhilarating place to me. I was delighted to move to London properly in July 2020 after living in Bristol where I studied history at university.

I love history. I am a big fan of museums and books but, even more so, I am interested in the tangible, liveable, and breathable history we are surrounded by as we go about our everyday lives.

I started my blog: Living London History so that I can share my journey of discovering London’s fascinating and vibrant past by walking its streets and delving into its hidden corners and encouraging others to do the same! Living London History includes hidden gems and self-guided themed historical walks to help Londoners and visitors explore this wonderful city.

Mentions in the podcast:

1. Somerset House- a palatial government building to live up to Britain's new found wealth and position as the centre of global trade. In the Palladian style, influenced by Ancient Greece and Rome. See the statue of George III dressed as a Roman emperor.

2. Rules restaurant- 1798 set up and still independently owned. Indicative of the rise of the middle class with a disposable income. This is where the future King Edward VII met his mistress Lily Langtry for clandestine meet-ups. Also features in my Hidden History of Covent Garden self-guided walk!

3. Burlington House and Arcade- house one of the first examples of Palladian style, remodeled in 1717. The arcade was constructed in 1819 to stop people from throwing rubbish over his wall.

4. Pickering Place- London's smallest square! (I have a reel about it on my Insta)- notorious back in the day for gambling dens and as a location for duels.

5. Spitalfields- specifically the French Huguenot weaver's house's on Fournier street

6. St Martin in the Fields- a great example of the Palladian style of building in a church!

I got blind for 3 days! ft Sally Bunnell #VI

It was just the last episode when we had Sally over, telling us about her travel app - a great concept that can start make you money straight away. But I also liked Sally's personality, not just her app. That is why I asked her if she has some interesting stories to share. To my surprise, she came back to me with a whole list :D I picked this one as it sounded really curious and I hope we can all learn from it (that is the idea of these travel stories that are shared every once in a while).

Enjoy!

The travel app that pays you cash - NaviSavi ft Sally Bunnell #V

Not so long ago I was networking on LinkedIn when a lady invited me to join an app because of a few travel pieces that I posted on that platform. I downloaded the app, played with it a bit, and the concept seemed quite simple: share raw videos - get money for them. I ended up sharing my feedback on how the app can be improved which got me meeting with a few team members, and eventually, I ended up talking to Sally on Instagram. I am excited to share this opportunity with you, my fellow curious friends :)

She writes about her adventures at Hole in the Donut Cultural Travel (https://holeinthedonut.com)."
