Now, 28 years later, Conrad is teaching 2nd generation students at his swim school, Swim to Me, changing how adults and children feel about the water and providing a safe space for them to feel confident in their skills. The 1955 Cannon Street All Stars with John Rivers
This powerful story is finally getting the recognition it deserves as Mr. Rivers shares the impact of the oppressive Jim Crow laws during a time when he and his teammates had nothing but a burning desire to play ball.
Rivers graduated in 1965 from Hampton Institute with a degree in Art and went on to Columbia University Graduate School of Architecture for one year from 1968 to 1969. He became a licensed architect in 1990; a profession that even today out of the over 100,000 architects nationally, only approximately 2,500 are African American.

Remember You Must Evolve with Tauska Trusaun-Kennedy
Being an interior designer you learn how to start over, rip off the old paint, strip down the walls, and replace broken ceilings to provide a safe space and create new memories. This takes on a deeper meaning for Tauksa Trusaun-Kennedy.
At an early age, she discovered art was an escape for her. As a young girl, Tauska lived with her grandmother who worked as a famous cook for a prominent and wealthy family.ย The wife of that family loved to redesign her house often and would hire an interior designer to bring her vision to life. This was Tauskaโs first experience seeing how interior designers worked and looked. But she wouldnโt step into that world just yet.
Several years later, Tauska experienced an unexpected tragedy after losing her only child. Now in her 40s and not wanting to live anymore, she had nowhere to turn. Tauska sought out a life coach for guidance and would soon find out it was time for a fresh start.
She was encouraged to explore her interest in interior design and at 47, moved to New York City and enrolled in Pratt Institute, an interior design school, and later graduate at the top of her class.
Tauska is a Los Angeles-based principal interior designer, who has been practicing as a professional interior designer for over a decade. She comes from a background in high-end residential, specializing in biophilic design.
Her business, RUME by Tauska, is a dynamic, engaging, and caring design group passionate about the transformative effects of design, always seeking new and sustainable ways to improve environments by adding more appeal with beautiful form and better function.

Exactly 10 years ago in 2012, I joined a class to help me write my one-person show, Stamp of Approval. Renรฉ Peรฑa, a former guest on this podcast, was also part of this class.
Kimleigh Smith, our amazing teacher in this class also played the roles of our producer, director, marketer, counsellor and so much more. To say we were grateful would be a huge understatement.
That's why it's so exciting to finally have her on the show in this episode, where she talked about her background, and what drove her to start the class, among other things.
Apart from being a one-person show coach, Kimleigh is also an actress, best-selling author, producer, Sexual Assault Awareness Speaker, philanthropist, and founder of Embrace Your Cape.

"I come from a family of people who know how to figure it out and make it work."~ Meryl Johnson
"There is something unique, even spiritual, when you have a grandmother, daughter and grandchild under one roof."~ Curtis Burke
For most people, Mother's Day is a day of celebrating and loving on our mothers and mother figures in our lives. Not so much for Meryl Johnson, our guest in this episode. For her, it is a reminder of the two women that were so integral to her life for many years, but are now not part of it anymore. It is a painful reminder of how terribly she misses them.
Meryl has worked at Warner Brothers Entertainment Group, Country Music Association (CMA) and as Vice President of digital marketing at The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences.
In this episode, Meryl shares about her grandmother and mother's unique relationship, her experience living with both of them since she was 12, and how their love and mutual respect for each other impacted Meryl's life.
The impact her mother and grandmother have imprinted on her life will never change, only guiding her as she now creates her own family legacy.

Knowing where you start in life does not determine the finish line. Raised in what he refers to as a broken two-parent home by a very hard-working mother and an alcoholic father who worked in the Jamaican police force, Dr. Ryan Wiggan's is not your typical everyday childhood story. The context itself alone sets the scene for plenty of unexpected twists. All that combined with growing up in the "Garrison" โa term used to refer to gang-ridden and volatile neighbourhoodsโ in Kingston, Jamaica, inevitably led to a very unstable and abusive childhood for Dr. Ryan. Thankfully, those experiences, along with witnessing a dramatically contrasting world as he visited his peers' families growing up ignited a burning desire within Dr. Ryan to break this detrimental cycle that had been handed down and unquestioned for far too long. And if you meet him today, you can clearly see that everything that he faced was building him up and preparing him to use his voice as a powerful tool; and subsequently, help others uncover their own legacy. The challenges and cultural shock they experienced during their integration into the South were the driving force behind her father's dedication to helping people by fighting hate, teaching tolerance and seeking justice. These principles of tolerance and acceptance shaped Lara's worldview.โฃ

That was David's mantra through college and University.
David also shared a bit about his work as a Cerebral Palsy advocate & children's awareness educator, and so much more.

By shining a light on uplifting stories in the media, the narrative of how our community, culture, race along with social bias will only bring more jobs, better schools and safer environments for us. This is something that Jason Lewis believes to his core, and he has chosen to brightly shine that light, one photograph and story at a time.
Join me in this follow-up episode from the West Adams Legacy as I interview Jason Lewis.
The Lewis family has been in Los Angeles for over a hundred years. Jason Lewis grew up near Crenshaw on Washington Boulevard. He is a graduate of Fairfax High School and received a bachelor's from UCLA.
Undeterred by the sad demise of the South Los Angeles Legacy, Jason chose to shine a positive light on the underserved remnants of that community with the best tools he had; photography and storytelling. Tune in to find out how it all unfolded.

This a story of triumph, where our guest Andrea Mack chose not to allow the past to determine who she has become today.
Andrea is the owner of One Word at a Time Coaching, where she specializes in trauma and recovery coaching. She is a certified life coach with years of business experience. She is also a speaker, volunteer, mentor and advocate for help groups, single mothers and various women's facilities.
Andrea shared her tragic story of trauma, which started at the very early age of 5. The horrors she faced from then on went on to shape her childhood and young adult life in heartbreaking ways until she hit rock bottom and turned her life around.
Andrea has shown a beautiful balance of how you can turn a life of pain, shame and regret around to become a beacon of hope and light. She is now helping others release the shame from their past to know their self-worth.
My conversation with Andrea answers questions like:
- Is finding Christ the only route to getting sober?
- Do I need to have gone through the same experience to be able to help or coach someone?
- What would present-day Andrea tell the young Andrea now?

โWe have this inherent power as journalists because when people tell us a story, we are the ones that get to decide how itโs processed and distributed. Thatโs a huge responsibility and I take it really seriously.โ ~ Sarah Venture
Thatโs the spirit with which Sarah Ventre does her work, because finding truth and perspective is her mission.
Raised in Phoenix by an interfaith family, Sarah always wanted to be an archaeologist, until she later realized that studying the living was more her drive and heartbeat.
In this episode, Sarah shares the ups and downs of doing all that she possibly could to pursue her passion of storytelling. Get transported back in time to discover the untold stories and roots of a railroad town called Clinton, in South Carolina...as told by our guest in this episode, Albert "Vision" Williams.
A passionate historian, ancestry hobbyist, and amazing artist, Albert brought Clinton to life in our imaginations, revealing the untold stories of its history through the lens of his family's legacy. A legacy that we share to an extent because he also happens to be a cousin that I discovered via ancestry.com.
Through heart-warming memories of his childhood, poignantly painful stories of loss, and spine-tingling stories of new ancestral discoveries, Albert in his deeply informed and passionate style painted a beautiful tapestry of the stories of the African-American community whose roots can be traced all the way back to the start of the slave trade route in West Africa.
Please be warned that some of the stories shared in this episode may be quite triggering for some listeners.

Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) have existed since before the Civil Rights Act of 1964, but for many years, only a select few have been widely known. And to Nicole Ford-Miller, our guest in this episode, that was an unfortunate oversight that had to be corrected.
Being an Altadena - California native, it was quite a shock when one of her friends discovered that Nicole had never stepped foot onto the University of Southern California campus. And no wonder. Nicole's passion for HBCUs was kindled by her family since childhood, both through her parents and her aunt. So there was never a question as to what kind of university she would attend. After her incredibly welcoming and amazing experience at an HBCU (Bethune-Cookman University), Nicole started an organization, Stepping in the Right Direction (STRD), to spread the word about these little-known options for the African-American community.
Tune in to find out more about Nicole's outstanding work in creating awareness about these universities. Maybe you might be one of those people who needs her support in taking that first step in the right direction.

For Dr. Issac Hatley, seeing his vivacious, strong, and fiercely independent wife so weakened by chemo that she needed help for even the most basic self-care was utterly heart-breaking. But this brave and admirably loyal husband's attitude and approach to her suffering is a beacon of light and a beautiful example of what it looks like to truly love someone.
In this follow-up episode to Kiana Hatley's last week, I had the privilege of interviewing her husband Issac, along with a brief interview of their 14-year-old daughter Reagan Hatley.
Issac and Reaghan shared their insights into what it felt like to be a carer for someone you love, and also divulged some precious gems for anyone going through what they did as a family.
Their perspectives of breast cancer's far-reaching effects will both warm your heart and reduce you to tears...in a good way! You'll definitely walk away with so much more hope in humanity.ย

To our guest in this episode, breast cancer awareness month took on a whole new, not-so-glamorous meaning.
"...you know, when you see breast cancer stuff, you see like October the month of pink and it's so girly and it's beautiful and it's such a positive thing, but breast cancer is ugly and it's harsh and it's brutal and it is painful. It robs people of their family members and it robs people of themselves." ~Kiana
A mom, wife, and licensed marriage family therapist, Kiana shared her deeply moving story about her struggle with cancer not just once but two times. First with low-grade Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma in her 20's, and then 10 years later with aggressive Triple Negative Breast Cancer, a direct result of her radiation therapy treatment for lymphoma 10 years prior.
A strong, plain-spoken survivor with a big heart for people, Kiana had a lot of wisdom to share from her experience. From trusting your own instincts about your body to knowing how to be persistent in getting the help and treatment you need, you will walk away with a lot of food for thought...and encouragement.
Tune in to get a candid but compassionate view of the reality of fighting breast cancer through the eyes of someone who has walked the journey.
And look out for the sequel next week as I interview Kiana's husband, Isaac Hatley, along with a mini-interview of their daughter.

!Warning: This episode contains discussions of suicide and abuse!
The blows we're dealt in life have the capacity to make us or break us, and what we do with those agonizingly painful situations is what sets us apart.
For Latisha Russell, pain and trauma have been a common thread since before the age of 6. Having been separated from her estranged biological dad at a very early age, her mom's new marriage landed them all in an even worse situation - with a verbally and physically abusive husband/stepdad - and he went as far as to sexually abuse Latisha for years.
In a pivotal moment of despair, instead of letting the pain of these horrendous traumatic childhood experiences snuff her life out, Latisha chose to use her experience to help others.

There's a lot that goes into launching and producing a podcast, and sometimes as listeners, we don't get to know about the Host's thoughts, doubts, fears, and moments of joy during that process.
This episode is your chance to be that proverbial fly on the wall. Join me as I share some behind-the-scenes tidbits from Season 1 with special guest host, Erin Abelon.
You will hear my thoughts on what went right, what didn't go exactly as planned, and those beautiful moments where the outcome far exceeded my expectations.
And if you have some more feedback to add to what Erin and I discussed, I would really love to hear your thoughts. So please leave me a voice message in the link provided below.
Don't forget to leave us a review while you're there. Your ratings are really crucial in helping new listeners find us on Apple, Spotify, and other platforms.

"Just do it afraid. Do it with the insecurities. Do it with all of the things that could be hindering you. Do it with your heart beating out of your chest." And that is exactly what our guest in this episode, Dr. DeVonna Gatlin, did with her career as a chemist.
Now living her dream, with a Ph.D. acquired from the University of Cincinnati, Dr. DeVonna struggled, adapted, and survived through most of her education with an undiagnosed learning disability.ย
She could have stopped at any time and thrown in the towel. Having a learning disability, growing up in south-central Los Angeles, and faced with family sickness and death. But when pushed to the limit, she excelled - making a path in life for the next generation of scientists to come.
Every black girl who dreams of being a scientist will be inspired by her story.
