John Schoonover and Louise Smith

John Schoonover and Louise Smith

Today we are joined by John Schoonover and Louise Smith, Grandchildren to Frank E. Schoonover: painter, illustrator, and photographer, whose artwork can now be viewed in SAMFA’s Gallery 1. Our exhibition: N.C Wyeth and the Golden Age of American Illustration will be on display until March 31st, 2024. We are featuring works from Frank Schoonover, right alongside the work of N.C. Wyeth and teacher Howard Pyle, whom Schoonover and Wyeth studied with.

Frank E. Schoonover produced thousands of paintings throughout his long career, many as illustrations for written works that ran the gamut from science fiction to magazine articles. He also was a teacher, a designer, and a landscape painter, and helped organize what is now the Delaware Art Museum.

You can read more about Frank Schoonover here: (https://www.frankschoonover.org)

Microscape

Microscape

Gabriel and Bailey are talking about one of SAMFA's Current Exhibits: Microscape: A Studio Art Quilt Associates Global Exhibition
January 19 – March 31, 2024

"Our known world stretches far beyond what we can see with the unaided eye. Microscopes, magnifying glasses, and virtual imaging techniques reveal a world of great beauty and complexity. That world contains the smallest particles, tiniest organisms, smallest landscape, or natural details and provides us with an abundance of artistic inspiration. The art quilts in the exhibit explore a corner of the world at high magnification, capturing tiny wonders at the microscopic level, or by zooming in on a larger object to show its smallest details."

If you want to see these pieces on display, check out SAMFA's galleries! Open Tuesdays - Saturdays 10 am - 4 pm, and Sundays 1 pm - 4 pm.

You can also see pictures of these pieces, along with information about each artist online at (https://www.saqa.com/art/exhibitions/microscape)

Gabriel and Bailey sit down with artist Dana Younger!

Dana Younger uses a wide variety of sculptural mediums to call attention to cultural heritage that warrants reexamination. The Peacemakers

The Peacemakers

Gabriel and Bailey talk about SAMFA's Exhibit: "The Peacemakers: Works by Felice House and Dana Younger" “For more than a century the West has occupied a special place in the imagination of Americans, with perhaps only one foot in reality,” the artists write. “By subverting expectations, House and Younger are questioning a genre, not only in its historical context, but as a contemporary fantasy with roots so deep in American culture that they are quite possibly inexorable.” Through painting and sculpture, artists Felice House and Dana Younger are asking the audience to reevaluate the archetypes, mythology, and values of “The West” while reveling in its rich visual language. Felice House is a figurative painter who strives, through her portrayals of women, to provide a counterpoint to the passive female representations found in art historical tradition. She projects contemporary women into iconic roles formerly played by western movie icons such as John Wayne, James Dean and Gary Cooper. By placing women in these roles, she points a finger at the limited access of women to power in culture. House is an Associate Professor in the School of Performance, Visualization and Fine Arts at Texas A&M. Dana Younger uses a wide variety of sculptural mediums to call attention to cultural heritage that warrants reexamination. His work juxtaposes romanticized Western conventions with real people and damage associated with westward expansion. Humor, beauty, and biting commentary combine in his work and invite the viewer to take another look. Simultaneously playful and incisive, Younger and House come together to offer a new look at the Old West. “The Peacemakers: Works by Felice House and Dana Younger” exhibit views “The West” through a post-modern lens that both challenges and honors this most American of genres. The exhibit will be shown at the San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts in Gallery Verde (417 S. Oakes Street) from July 20-October 8, 2023.

McKay Otto

McKay Otto

Gabriel and Bailey sit down for a beautiful and enlightening conversation with McKay Otto. McKay was a featured artist in SAMFA's recent exhibit: Take a Closer Look: Orna Feinstein and McKay Otto

McKay Otto is a Texas-based artist whose work continues to transcend time and space, reaching into the depths of what we all hope will grace our existences: light. Light hovers and bounces around the soft shadows that live among veils of delicately tenuous shades of color. The sculptures reveal themselves differently in the daytime versus in the nighttime, retaining their glow and adding another intriguing layer to the work. Reveling in the beauty of the possibilities of the artistic expression, Otto says, "The work is obsessed with the expression of color, light, and the way we perceive these things."
