Remember when choosing a beverage that sparkling water counts towards your daily water intake and can make a great refreshing choice when you are choosing to abstain from alcohol. A nice cold sparkling water with some line is a great substitute for a gin and tonic with ZERO calories. Check out a little machine called the SODASTREAM. You can carbonate your very own filtered tap water in reusable bottles for maximum savings and very little environmental impact. Here on the checklist: http://bit.ly/GuudChecklist
The federal government does not mandate that bottled water be any safer than tap water – the chemical pollution standards are nearly identical (EWG 2008). In fact, bottled water is less regulated than tap water.
GET THIS: Companies producing bottled water are not legally require to note the source of their water NOR have to list how the water is treated (if at all).
Listen in for this and more...
If you checked out the link yesterday for your tap water report card you’ll know what’s lurking in your water that you need to filter out. Listen up for the different types of affordable filters. We have our 2 favorites on the Wellness Warrior Checklist here: http://bit.ly/GuudChecklist
When most people get thirsty, they go to their tap or refrigerator for a drink of water without giving it a second thought. But what if you discovered that what was in the tap water you used every day for drinking, cooking, and washing could potentially harm you? Sadly, studies have found that potential cancer-causing agents are in almost every municipal water system in the US.
check out the EWG Tap water database, search by zip code and get the report card for your tap water: http://bit.ly/GuudTapWaterReport
It's self-care Sunday...today round up all of your Sunscreens...from your beachbag or knapsack, from the medicine cabinet or the pool. Carefully look at the ingredients. If you see ANYTHING other than Titanium Dioxide or Zinc Oxide in the list of active ingredients this is not good for you. Remember that just because it says it is made for and safe for kids and babies doesn't make it so.
No one is looking out for you friends...we need to do it ourselves.
Pitch the products that aren't healthy and make better choices.
A few of our favorites are over here: http://bit.ly/GuudChecklist
Please visit our Facebook page where we have a few recent articles about the dangers of Sunscreen.
From what we have learned this week we need exposure without sunscreen around noon each day in order to produce adequate levels of Vitamin D but this is about all the exposure we should get. So what to do if you are longing for that golden tan? Self tanner might be the answer. Many are very chemical laden
Understand that self tanners can tout their use of organic ingredients and still have up to 30% synthetic materials, even the ones labeled “organic” or “made with organic ingredients.”
The only way to be sure that the product you are purchasing is, in fact, organic is to look for the USDA Organic Seal on the label. This seal guarantees that every ingredient is organically produced, which bans the use of harmful pesticides and synthetic fertilizers.
Our pick is on our Wellness Warrior Checklist: http://bit.ly/GuudChecklist
Light tells the brain it is time to wake up. But did you know that exposure to in the early morning, can actually help you sleep at night. The timing of exposure is crucial; the body clock is most responsive to sunlight in the early morning, between 6 and 8:30 a.m. Exposure to sunlight later does not provide the same benefit. The type of light also matters, as does the length of exposure. Direct sunlight outdoors for at least one-half hour produces the most benefit. HOWEVER,
Overexposure to the sun's ultraviolet (UV) radiation can cause a variety of eye problems, including cataracts, macular degeneration, non-cancerous growths on the surface of the eye) and even cancer of the eye and eyelids. Therefore, to protect your eyes from harmful solar radiation you should ALWAYS wear sunglasses when you are outdoors except when you are getting that early morning light. AND never look directly at the sun.
A Cool milk compress
Its is one of the quickest, simplest and low-cost ways to treat sunburn. It doesn’t get much easier than just heading to the refrigerator The initial coolness of the milk will ease the heat, while it also creates a layer of protein to protect your skin, help it heal, and further soothe discomfort.
Also, the after-sun products we like are here: http://bit.ly/GuudChecklist
More over on the audio!
Our goal should be to limit exposure to the sun, wear protective clothing when we need to be in the sun for longer periods and if we are going to plan a day at the beach or some fishing or hiking in less clothes than cover our bodies, we will need to invest in a
natural mineral based sunscreen with with Zinc Oxide or Titanium Dioxide or a blend of the two.
Read this: https://www.ewg.org/sunscreen/report/the-trouble-with-sunscreen-chemicals/#.Ww21KkgvxPY
Then share this information with the ones you love.
PS. A tube or 2 of natural sunscreen makes a great hostess gift if you are visiting friends this summer. Our picks are here: http://bit.ly/GuudChecklist
If you are going to out in the mid-day sun for a longer period of time, like for a hike, fishing, a trip to the beach or gardening…you’ll want to think about sun protection and an easy way to do this is with clothing. Light colored, loose fitting, breathable fabrics work best and will provide an UltraViolet Protection Factor (UPF) of anywhere from 3-50 according to SKINCANCER.ORG Listen up for ways to protect yourself with out chemicals.
There seems to be much confusion over Sun Exposure.
To tan or not to tan. Are there toxins in our sunscreens? If we don’t get sun how do we synthesize VitaminD? How to prevent too much sun exposure? How to treat a sunburn? Protecting your eyes from the sun? Or should we just skip the sun and go for a self tanner?
These questions and more will be answered this week.
The book we mention today is by Dr. Michael Holick called "The Vitamin D Solution" and as always you can find it on our Wellness Warrior Checklist here: http://bit.ly/GuudChecklist
Can you believe that the United States has not passed a major federal law to regulate the safety of ingredients used in personal care products since 1938. But In Europe things are much different. Over the past two decades, the European Union has banned close to 1,400 chemicals in personal care products and restricted the levels of over 250 more. The United States has only partially banned 30 to date. This is unacceptable.
Parabens, Phthalates, Polyethylene Glycols, Dyes, Fragrances....the same chemicals we have been talking about all week are lurking in your makeup bag. If you have bought mainstream brands like CoverGirl, Loreal, or Maybelline you are using toxic products.
There are great brands out there that are all natural and perform as well as the bad stuff.
Our three favorites:
Check them out. Get those toxins our of your personal care products for a healthier you!
As always, please share this podcast with someone you love.
As I started research personal care products I wasn’t only interested in products that I use but products that I buy for my boys and my husband. I was really surprised that almost all commerically available shaving gels and creams are super toxic.
Your skin is vulnerable during shaving. You’ve applied warm water to soften the hairs, which opens your pores, allowing more of whatever is resting on the surface of your skin to sink deeper into it. Then you shave, exfoliating the outer layer and revealing new, fresh skin underneath that is more tender and vulnerable to the elements outside—including your shaving cream and aftershave lotions.
Many chemicals to be avoided at all costs. Instead, choose a shave soap, perhaps something that contains coconut oil which will give you a little lather. Please do your research. Here is the medline article I mention: http://medlineplus.gov/ency/article/002717.htm
And safer products here: http://bit.ly/GuudChecklist
Everybody knows there are dangerous-sounding chemicals in nail polish, but many of us think our limited contact with wet polish is too minimal to cause much risk. After all, we’re not putting it on our skin or drinking it.
But, a study led by Duke University suggests that we absorb at least one potentially hormone-disrupting chemical every time we get a polish. While the impact of this chemical on our health is still unclear, the fact that our body can absorb chemicals through nail polish is cause for concern.
There are safe choices out there and you can find them at Whole Foods Markets or your local health food stores. Brands we like include Zoya, Smith+Cult and Deborah Lippman. A few of these are available on Amazon.com and on our Wellness Warrior Checklist here: http://bit.ly/GuudChecklist
Perfumes are concoctions of many different toxic chemicals. “The average fragrance product tested contained 14 secret chemicals not listed on the label,” reports EWG
Fragrances commonly contain parabens, phthalates, and synthetic musks that may cause hormone disruption, reproductive problems, or possibly cancer. The exact ingredients in synthetic fragrances are protected as “trade secrets” and therefore do not have to be disclosed on the label.
Always a great choice to choose Fragrance Free products especially for babies and children and anyone with sensitive skin.

Who would think that many commercially available toothpastes contain toxins. With the lining of the mouth being so very thin it is prone to irritation and even infection when coming into contact with toxins. Plus, the nature of scrubbing teeth with a toothbrush can irritate your gums causing even more absorption. Please take a minute to check your toothpaste for any of these toxic ingredients:
Saccharin & Aspartame
You can check out the Environmental Working Group to see how your current toothpaste measures up here: https://www.ewg.org/
As always, products we love and approve are on our Amazon Wellness Warrior checklist here: http://bit.ly/GuudChecklist
This week we are talking about getting toxic chemicals our of products that you put on your body or skin. Anything from shampoo and soaps to deodorants, nail polish, lotions and perfumes needs to be reevaluated.
Remember your skin is your largest organ and what ever goes on your skin is absorbed by your body.
Would you believe that the average U.S. woman puts 168 chemicals on her body every day (men aren't much better with 85) There is much room for improvement and we are going to talk this week about the biggest culprits that may be lurking in your medicine cabinet.
Remember - safe products that we love are over on our Amazon Wellness Warrior Checklist here: http://bit.ly/GuudChecklist

Functional Medicine is a complete system of medicine where together the doctor and patient look to address the root cause of disease rather than treating symptoms.
They offer testing that you won't find a regular physician's office.
For instance, if your chief complaint is extreme fatigue their course of action for you might be to test your thyroid, test your red blood cells for nutritional deficiencies, test you for your heavy metal burden. They might suggest a combination of dietary changes, nutritional IVs or supplements, and pharmaceutical drugs to get your wellness to the next level.
Patients need to be open to being very involved in their wellness. It's very powerful from a patient perspective to feel like you are working towards wellness TOGETHER towards a better state of health.

Homeopathy (homeopathic medicine) is a system of medicine founded in the early 19th century by a German physician, Dr. Samuel Christian Hahnemann (1775-1843). Remedies are given to patients when ill - however these remedies are so diluted that perhaps not a single molecule of the active compound remains in the final preparation
This makes Homeopathy one of the more controversial of alternative medical therapies.
Personally speaking our family has had great success with this form of medicine especially for our two sons. One for ear infections and ear aches and the other for sleep walking and snoring. I used it to treat some of my symptoms from Lyme Disease. We have a great homeopathist who even treats animals!

Chiropractic I a form of medicine that uses the hands to manipulate the body It is one of the most widely used forms of manual medicine that dates back to ancient systems of treatment in China, India, and Egypt.
Chiropractors concentrate on spinal manipulation as a means of relieving pain. Many also encourage patients to take herbs or supplements to aid the body.

Acupuncture is the Orient's oldest healing practice. Fine needles are shallowly inserted into specific points on the body along meridians to help to move energy through the body. Pain and disease is thought to come from energy either being stagnant or deficient in one or more areas of the body.
Finding an acupuncturist isn't difficult as it has become very popular in the United States. Your practitioner must be licensed per state laws.

This week we will recap what we have been learning over the past 8 weeks.
Today's podcast has a new intro thanks to Jim McCarthy Voiceovers. He rocks.
Today is a good day to recommit to living a lower carb lifestyle. Omitting the breads, pastas, baked goods and saying yes to more good fats and fresh vegetables. Give that pantry a good cleaning and hit the market to stock up on fruits and vegetables. It's asparagus season and soon strawberries will be filling market stalls. As it gets warmer I find it much easier to choose lighter, fresher foods. Give it a try.
Today, make some time to contemplate activities in your life where you are in the zone. Fully present in each and every moment. For me that is when I play tennis. For some it is golf, or fishing or hot yoga. Movement that doesn't feel like work where you are focused. It feels great.
If you have been struggling this week to really relax and sink into meditation or mindfulness looking into Halotherapy.
Halotherapy addresses a wide range of needs, from skin and breathing disorders to stress management and relaxation. the antibacterial and antimicrobial qualities of the salt create a pure, salt-infused balm in the air, while the negative ions induce a positive reaction in the body's nervous and lymphatic systems. During your visit, you remain dressed (minus your shoes) while pure medical grade salt is infused into the air. Sometimes music is played other times its quiet. But it is the perfect place to go, to sit and relax and quiet the mind. Give it a try. Google "salt cave" along with your zip code and see if there is one near you. If not, slip into a hot epsom salt bath for a similar effect.
My favorite local haunt: https://www.saulthaus.com/
Today give this a try. Your third eye, or mind's eye, is thought of as a gate that leads to inner realms and spaces of higher consciousness. It is source of energy and considered a Chakra. Focus your attention here while you sit quietly either by looking towards the center of your eyebrows with eyes closed or with relaxed, closed eyes focus on opening that third eye and letting energy flood your body.
This a sure-to-be feel good week. Being mindful helps to slow the anxieties of daily living...breathing, being in the moment. Want even more? Check out these YouTube videos on mindfulness: http://bit.ly/2HXfZOp
How do you make space and time for movement in your life. Make dates with yourself and keep them as you would an appointment for a haircut or a massage. Whether it is a Spring hike with your dog on a Saturday morning or a weekly yoga class - make time, make the commitment. Remember your wellness is your responsibility. It is not selfish to take care of you!!
Any time you can incorporate more movement in your day to day is to multitask. A easy way to make brushing your teeth a more active process is to do squats while brushing. In the two minutes you spend brushing your teeth (both morning and night) you can probably do between 25-50 squats. That is really working the quadriceps and the glutes. Over time, these moments of wellness will lead to a stronger you!
Simply getting more steps in can really amp up the number of calories you are burning in a day. An easy way to ensure this is to always park your car in the back of the parking lot. It will take you only an extra minute or two and remember those healthy minutes are cumulative. Over time you will notice a difference in the way you feel when you either make changes to habits or start to incorporate these moments of wellness into your lifestyle.
You are probably unaware of how long your stretches of sitting last. An easy way to reconcile this is to simply set a timer. Use your phone as a timer and set it for 30 minutes. When it goes off make yourself stand up and either stretch or walk about for 2 minutes. Then resume sitting if you must. Take a few deep breaths before starting back to your activity for 5 extra points!
This week we are on a mission for movement. We are going to recognize how long we spend sitting and literally get off our butts. Today's tip for an easy way to move more is simply to take the stairs when they are presented to us. 2 flights here or 3 minutes there OVER TIME can have a big impact. Hey, you don't have to change over night. Pairing this tip with a past one, like, lower carb eating is a great one-two punch. Now, when you see the stairs, think of us like a red little beet sitting on your shoulder cheering you on! You got this.
Hey, just a reminder that our wellness tip in no way constitutes medical advice. If you have a question or a particular concern about your health please see your medical doctor. We offer you simple wellness tips.
Deer ticks are carried by deer but more commonly by the white-footed mouse. Reduce the amount of ticks a mouse is carrying and reduce the chance of having one bite you.
Using the same chemical Permethrin, make tick tubes. You will need toilet paper or paper towel tubes (cut long ones in half), cotton balls and Permethrin spray.
Wearing gloves in a well-ventilated area spray cotton balls with Permethrin on both sides and let dry. Stick approx. 10 cotton balls in each tube. Leave these tubes in areas where you have seen or suspect mice activity. Corners in your garage, near wood piles or under shrubs. The mice will take the cotton balls back to their nests and the chemical will drive the ticks from the nest reducing the number of ticks a mouse can carry. Voila! No harm to the mice and less ticks in your yard.
Permethrin spray here: http://a.co/bTVcHjo
Tick Tubes Video: http://bit.ly/2JokddY
Having designated clothing for outdoor play, gardening or hiking is a great idea. Treating these pieces of clothing with a spray containing the chemical Permethrin repels bugs and insects keeping you safe.
The one we like is on our Wellness Warrior Checklist here: http://a.co/bTVcHjo
Make sure to use it in a well ventilated area and don't breathe in the spray. Let the clothing dry for a few hours before wearing and never spray directly onto skin.
As always, tick check when coming inside, throw those clothes into the washer and hop in the shower. Remember the clothes sprayed with Permethrin will protect you for up to 6 washes.
If you are knowingly headed out to the garden, the woods, on a hike or even the golf course you should consider using a chemical agent on your skin. Along with wearing light colors, long sleeves and long pants and a hat, consider treating your skin with an insect repellent containing no more than 30% DEET.
Tick check as always and be sure to check your pets whenever they have been outside.
Not all labs are created alike. I have a few negative LabCorp ELISA Lyme Tests. Shoot for a Western Blot from one of the following labs:

Vitamin D is actually a hormone that can be synthesized in the body. Eating enough of these food sources, such as fatty fish and flax seeds along with daily exposure to sunlight can sometimes provide adequate levels of D in the body but it's very easy to supplement. A quality product that contains Vitamin D3 along with K2 (as MK7) is what you need. Our Wellness Warrior Checklist on Amazon has our favorite. http://a.co.bTVcHjo
A really easy way to work on wellness is to incorporate a multivitamin into your daily routine. We like to keep ours next to our toothbrush so we don't forget. Our pick is on the Wellness Warrior Checklist on Amazon. http://a.co/bTVcHjo is the link.
Melissa's favorite supplement that multi mineral! Minerals are so important for the body's everyday processes and our soil in bad shape providing less minerals to our plants than we need. One a day. Anything with TRICHLOSAN needs to go in the garbage. This anti-microbial is overkill and killing us. Also, fluoride. Get it out of your water and your toothpaste. It had been declared a neurotoxin and still our government lets this toxic waste by-product into our water supply. Dumbing us all down. Raise your IQ - avoid Fluoride.
"Fragrance" is a very dirty word. Hiding tons of chemicals in our products under cover of a simple word. Not regulated by the FDA. People, stop using products with added fragrance. Avoid Febreeze, Bounce and Tide at all costs.
In the midst of a rough week? Then it's more important than ever to nourish yourself through this. Cultivate your wellness and know you can control how well you take care of yourself. Slow it down. Easy does it.
