In this week's episode we begin a deep dive into Herbert Schlossberg's 1983 classic, Idols for Destruction: The Conflict of Christian Faith and American Culture.

In this eighth part of the series "Eschatology 101," we examine the second and fifth trumpets of Revelation 8 and 9 in more detail, and discuss the importance of having a Biblically-informed understanding of Revelation, as opposed to the kind of "newspaper exegesis" that is often done in popular studies of eschatology.

There are a lot of "sevens" in the book of Revelation, and this is the seventh episode in this series on Biblical eschatology! In this episode we look at the 144,000 and the "great multitude" in Revelation 7, and give a quick overview of chapter 8.

The identity of the four horsemen of the apocalypse has led to a great deal of speculation. In this episode, we focus on the horsemen and what they represent, as we continue to work through the first chapters of the book of Revelation.

This week we continue where we left off last week, with a look at Revelation 4 and 5. John is welcomed into the heavenly throne room, where we are introduced to the scroll with seven seals, and the Lamb who is found worthy to open it.

In this episode, we'll look at the historical context of the Revelation of Jesus Christ to John, and the situation of the seven churches in Asia Minor that first read this book in their congregations. We see how the message of Revelation was meant for these churches in their historical situations, and look at an example from the book of Acts about the challenges that the first generation of Christians had to face.

In Revelation 1:1, we're told that the revelation of Jesus Christ was given "to show to his servants the things that must soon take place." In this episode, we look at the time indicators in the book of Revelation, and ask the question: Does "soon" mean "soon"?

This is the second part of a series on eschatology, the Biblical doctrine of the last things. In this episode, we'll look at a couple of Old Testament passages that will help us to understand the significance of the kind of "cosmic" language that is often used in the book of Revelation, as well as the covenant blessings and curses listed in the book of Leviticus.

How did we become a society that proclaims "tolerance" to be the greatest good, while still being so intolerant toward certain points of view? In this week's episode, we explore this question, looking at the influential 1965 essay by Herbert Marcuse, "Repressive Tolerance," and considering its lasting and destructive influence.

In this week's episode I discuss Dr. Mark McDonald's 2021 book The United States of Fear: How America Fell Victim To A Mass Delusional Psychosis. McDonald argues that America suffered two pandemics: a viral one, and a psychological one, with the "pandemic of fear" being far more dangerous and damaging. His thesis, that this "fear pandemic" is rooted in the natural anxieties of women on behalf of their children and families, worsened by the way in which feminized men failed their women, inflamed and amplified by sensationalistic media, and driven over the top by authoritarian measures, remains important to consider even outside of the "pandemic" context.

In today's episode, I go through the introduction of Mark Milke's 2021 book The Victim Cult: How the Grievance Culture Hurts Everyone and Wrecks Civilzations, and address what Milke has to say about this "grievance culture" in the context of the previous two episodes on "Truth and Reconciliation."
