The Flaming Sword

The Flaming Sword

By Darin and Joel

Apologetics is the defense of the Christian faith. We discuss anything from why we believe what we believe, to Biblical Eschatology (study of end times), and more. The bible is the "Sword of the Spirit", so we're armed and ready!

Join us (and our occasional guest) for a fun (we love humor), enlightening Podcast, where we give the basics and also point you to deeper studies and resources. We
take God and His Word seriously; ourselves, not so much!

Ep. 24- Colossians 3:5-17 Put off, put on, rinse, repeat!

Moving on in our study, we cover Colossians Chap 3:5-17, which is famous for its "put offs" and "put ons", making it an easy to remember and applicable discipline to the Christian life. Darin and Joel had fun with this one (of course when don't we have fun), hitting each point in our faced paced format and leading us up to our final Podcast next which includes "submission"-oh my!

Ep. 22 - Colossians continued; baptism saves? nailed to the cross?, Darin needs coffee...?

After a week off, we pick up where we left off in Colossians Chap 2:6. We discuss many things including baptism, law, exactly what was nailed to the cross, and reiterate our emphasis on Christ alone! Fun and interesting, with a touch of humor as usual. God-bless

Ep. 21 - Colossians continued, woo hoo! Suffering, nations without hope, and all wisdom and knowledge are in Christ. Amen to that!

We pick up where we left off in Colossians, starting in Chap. 1 verse 24. Joel tells a slightly politically incorrect joke, but Darin gets on him for a different reason (way to cover his buddy). We discuss suffering and how the nations were without hope, but in Christ, everyone is offered salvation. Everything is in Christ, all wisdom and knowledge.  Join us for a fun, fast paced, and thought provoking bible study!

Ep. 20 - The Star of Bethlehem; natural event? miracle? Carmine Hetrick presents a real doozy!

We interrupted our Bible Study in Colossians for a special Christmas time treat. Carmine Hetrick was back and this was a very thought provoking and interesting presentation on what the star of Bethlehem may have been.  This is one of those episodes we could have went on and on in discussion.  While no one but God knows for sure what the actual star was, this plausible and exiting theory is well worth the listen.

Ep. 19 - Colossians week 3; kingdom now, that bloody religion, and Christ IS God. Woo-hoo!

We start with a little kingdom talk taking up with verse 13 from last time, then we discuss "that bloody religion" with verse 14, followed by the heart of the matter with verses 15-19 of Chap. 1. These passages are deep, exciting, rich with Christ, and even hard to contemplate as they picture Christ as co-equal with God the Father. We close out with verse 23, for another great Podcast with a lot of fun, but also a serious message. God-bless!

Ep. 18 - Colossians continued-faith, works, the simple gospel, and more...we're all over the place!

After a fun but haphazard start, we continue our study in Colossians re-reading Chap. 1 vrs-4-5, then getting down to business with verse. 6. We manage to get to verse 14 before closing, but cover faith + works, the simple gospel, kingdom now, and why chastisement is a key way to tell whether you are in the faith or not. Good times, but serious message, all in one Podcast. Enjoy!

Ep. 17 - Colossians it is! Our first attempt at a bible study...Calvinism? Trinity? Yep, we go there...

Joel and Darin begin a series in Colossians and barely a few verses in, we run into the doctrine of election and the Trinity. Joel's joke pushes the limits, but hey, that's what we do. It was a blast to shoot; we love the Word of God and in our usual fast paced, but fun delivery, we get this series started off flying!

Ep. 15 - S.A.D. but bittersweet goings ons in Christian Apologetics- Say what?

Joel and Darin are on their own this week, but wow, lots to discuss in the Christian Apologetics world and how they are sad and or worrisome, but maybe have a sweet silver lining-or maybe not. We start with science, then move to church affiliation, and finally biblical interpretive methods used by some Apologist, which to be honest, have us a bit worried. In our usual but fast paced format and of course with a touch of humor, we introduce these issues and give you some links below to further study and decide for yourself what you think.

Ep. 14 - Jesus did what in AD 70? Seriously? Wow, just wow, with returning guest Carmine Hetrick!

Recurring guest Carmine Hetrick is back and wow, this one is interesting.  After our usual intro and Joel's lame joke lol, we get right into our topic. We have to admit, we're kind of all over the place a bit, but the main thing we want everyone to see is something big happened in AD 70 and guess what? Jesus said it would happen...really, seriously, not joking! In our usual fast paced, but fun way, Carmine discusses with us this amazing prophecy!

Ep. 13 - Intro to Church History (wow, the Pope did what?) and the 5 SOLAS with returning guest James Wagley

James Wagley returns with a brief introduction to Church history, explaining to us what happened in 1054 AD,  how the church operated to the best of its ability for hundreds of years before a lot of corruption came in,  and what the Catholic church did to insight a much needed change. This Reformation led to the  5 SOLAS that James goes through briefly at the end, capping yet another exciting Podcast. Ep. 12 - What is the New Covenant (hint: We're not under the Mosaic law... oh my) with guest David Cooper (Bible Scribe)

Darin and Joel welcome first time guest David Cooper (aka Bible Scribe) and we get right into our conversation as David has done a lot of work in this area. He  sheds some excellent light and understanding on why we are to lean into the New Covenant through Christ and how we are not under the Old Covenant Law, but we are to seek to be Holy.  Exciting Podcast with some humor (some unplanned like Joel disappearing for a while), but also a very serious and thought provoking lesson on this controversial topic.

We try to make sure our programming only consists of those who support the essential position of salvation through Christ alone. Ep. 9 - Fulfilled prophecies about Christ with guest Carmine Hetrick

Ep. 9 - Fulfilled prophecies about Christ with guest Carmine Hetrick

Darin and Joel welcome Carmine Hetrick back to discuss fulfilled prophecies in Christ. This was a crazy episode, as we had some major technical difficulties, but in the final edit, it all worked out nicely.  All of us struggled to say what we wanted at times, Darin calls Carmine out for his Elvis hair, and much more. Enjoy this humor filled, but great learning experience, as Carmine discusses 3 major prophecies concerning Christ, that were given hundreds of years prior to His advent.

Ep. 8 - Is Jesus Lord, liar, or lunatic with guest James Wagley

Ep. 8 - Is Jesus Lord, liar, or lunatic with guest James Wagley

Darin discusses Gary Habermas's (Christian scholar specializing in the resurrection of Jesus) 5000 page magnum opus, then Joel steals the only input Darin was going to add to the Podcast (not on purpose of course lol). We then get right into our discussion with James Wagley on the Deity of Christ, which ultimately answers our question of who Jesus not only claimed to be, but is.  Again, a lot of fun packed into a short get to the point format, but with a great message of hope that Jesus is part of the triune God!

Ep. 7- The resurrection of Jesus Christ; an awesome fact!

Darin and Joel discuss the evidence for the resurrection of Christ, but start with a super swell Forrest Gump joke and even a bit of music.  We also learn Joel can sing a bit.  Join us for another fun, but also serious podcast that once again shows our faith is backed by solid evidence!

Ep. 6- Intelligent Design with guest Carmine Hetrick

We have Carmine Hetrick back with us to discuss Intelligent Design in a great back and forth discussion, what it is, how it competes with Darwin's theory (joke) called evolution, how many scientist are starting to see the light, plus lots of other good info, and of course a few laughs.

Ep. 5- A confused atheist, then manuscript evidence-yep, its overwhelming!

Darin and Joel talk about the origins of "super Swell", listen to an audio of an atheist who says a "computer" created everything (you can't make this stuff up), then dive into manuscript evidence that supports the bible for the remainder of the show.

Ep. 4 - Scientific evidence from scripture with our guest, Carmine Hetrick

Ep. 4 - Scientific evidence from scripture with our guest, Carmine Hetrick

Joel and Darin have their first guest, Carmine Hetrick, who takes us through 6 points where the bible agrees with science. We get our first and second phone calls...well, not really, but its funny. Darin tries to be a philosopher as he explains how we are a tiny speck in an infinite universe and either fails miserably, or was successful- you decide.  Serious talk with a little bit of fun-enjoy!
