EP50: Purpose or No Purpose?

I recorded this episode on my thirtieth birthday. I started my podcast because I wanted and still want to help people. I'm not sure why, but I do. I recently listened to my first episode and I asserted that I intended to teach and I'm not sure that I've done a very good job at that or if that is still my intention. However, my intention with this episode is to continue something I started that I thought I would be good at and was not as good as I thought I would be but want to get better at. Also, it's a shift from intending to teach to intend to provoke deep thought in you. As I type this description it's a little past the middle of Lent 2022. I recently listened to a talk by Fulton Sheen on the Fulton Sheen App that I purchased some years ago and the title of his talk is "Philosophy of Life" so I thought it appropriate to listen to it since that is what my podcast is supposed to be about. I listened to it to improve my spirituality since it is lent (as I'm typing this). In this episode, I'm not summarizing what Fulton Sheen said in his talk but instead what it made me think about and my hope is that what I say will make you think about your own philosophy of life and whether you believe that there is an objective purpose for your life or not. And if there isn't an objective purpose for your life are you creating a subjective purpose or what are you doing about a purposeless life? Think about it. And please don't forget to subscribe, share the podcast, and leave a review to help someone out there find this podcast. God love you, Dani.

EP49: Salon Founder/Owner and Cradle Catholic Janelle Renee

EP49: Salon Founder/Owner and Cradle Catholic Janelle Renee

Janelle Renee, Founder/Owner of Elle Salon,
joins me on the Dani Flo Podcast Video to discuss:
Her faith as a cradle Catholic, a mother, and a business owner,
How she handled the lockdowns/shutdowns as a result of covid-19,
And her business and prayer plans for 2021.

This is what she originally wrote on the Instagram post that caught my attention:

“Dreams of becoming a heroic saint for the sake of bringing souls to the Heart of Jesus are often what keep us all going every day. But heroism and martyrdom don’t always happen as bluntly as being burned at the stake! The greatest challenge is to live in this currently half insane world, meet souls here, and show them God’s love. The test is every single day. When Christ asks Peter 3 times ‘Do you love me?’ The requirement for Peter to prove his love is through action not words. - My life is very ordinary. I am a mother of one, I am divorced, I own a business- a hair salon with 40 young women as my employees and coworkers- and I, like you, have to balance living a faith life, close to the Lord, while existing in a society that is not often filled with sights of Heaven. But every normal, imperfect moment on this earth is a chance and a challenge to know, love, and serve God through others. The world craves to know God. It is up to us to show them who He is.”

  1. (3:05) What made you want to post on Catholic Millennials (Instagram)?
  2. (6:08) Why is “wearing your faith on your sleeve” important to you?
  3. (9:48) How does your mom feel about you being close to your faith?
  4. (12:19) How did you handle Mass not being available during the shutdown?
  5. (15:52) How did you handle running a business during the shutdown?
  6. (20:36) What were some of your employees' concerns?
  7. (28:24) Why do you think you have traditional values but a modern style?
  8. (38:27) How did you know you liked hair and beauty?
  9. (40:50) What’s your favorite kind of hair/makeup to do?
  10. (41:40) The Office (US) nerd out [and a lil’ Mean Girls]
  11. (53:58) What do you think is the biggest challenge of being a mom right now?
  12. (1:00:11) What are your plans for 2021 for your business/staying open/faith?
  13. (1:03:01) Have you always been a big reader?
  14. (1:03:33) Are you more of a verbal prayer or more mental?
  15. (1:08:58) Which of the Rosary mysteries are your favorite?
  16. (1:09:50) Which individual mystery is your favorite?
  17. (1:12:19) Have you ever read Fulton Sheen’s autobiography?
  18. (1:14:09) Why do you like Fulton Sheen?

You’re going to enjoy this episode if you’re interested in learning how Janelle handles her Catholic Faith, motherhood, and being a business owner.

You’re especially going to enjoy this episode if you like the Catholic Faith and learning about other Catholics, you’re curious about Catholic motherhood, and you’re curious how a Catholic business owner handled the first covid-19 lockdown/shutdown.

Please listen, subscribe to the podcast, turn on notifications, and share this episode or your favorite episode with everyone you know.

Thank you to Janelle for nerding out about the Office and Mean Girls, and sharing her perspective on faith, motherhood, and business.

EP48: A Conversion to the Catholic Faith with Earthly Lynx

EP48: A Conversion to the Catholic Faith with Earthly Lynx

I met Edwin on Instagram because we follow similar accounts. After reviewing his content, I judged that we were like-minded so I messaged him and asked him if he would be interested in doing topical Instagram lives on the Catholic faith and he agreed. We ended up doing about 5-ish Instagram lives (one of them is on my feed if you’d like to check it out). I invited him on your boy’s pod, the Dani Flo Podcast, to tell us the story of his conversion to the faith because: who doesn’t love a conversion story? If you do, then this is the episode for you. Please subscribe if you’re not subscribed, and share the episode so that the community can grow. The Dani Flo Podcast is a ”two-man” operation: my lovely wife and I. So, your shares are how we get the word out and how the community grows. Thanks and enjoy!

From Edwin’s YouTube Channel:

“Earthly Lynx is a page that delves into aspects of the Catholic faith.

Some consist of going out into the world and capturing moments that are unique to the faith. We capture all of this through Vlogs, videos on the faith and your ever occasional music video. This channel will present the beauty of the Catholic faith from a different perspective.

NYC is arguably the biggest city in the world and the faith is here too.

I hope you all enjoy it.

Stay Blessed, God Bless”

EP43: Has Pragmatism Ruined Christianity? With Bill Doherty

Have you ever heard of pragmatism? Do you know what pragmatism is? Do you like it? Do you agree with it? Do you want to learn more about it? Have you wondered whether you are pragmatic? Should everyone be pragmatic? Or no one? What about Christians? Should Christians be pragmatists? Or not? Or can Christians pick and choose what to be pragmatists about? My friend Bill Doherty joins me on the Dani Flo Podcast Episode to discuss the problem of pragmatism in Christian education. Bill was introduced to this problem during his studies in a Phd program and has focused on this question for years and graciously agreed to share his insights with us.

Bill discusses and answers the following questions:

  • What made you interested in pragmatism?
  • How long after you left your Phd program did you start focusing on the problem of pragmatism?
  • If something had gone different, would you have eventually ran into the problem of pragmatism?
  • What is pragmatism?
  • Is pragmatism defined as “what works”?
  • What are some examples of areas we are pragmatists in?
  • How did pragmatism make its way into Christianity?
  • Do most Christian educators see pragmatism as a problem?
  • What are the major issues with using pragmatism in Christianity?
  • How should Christians be educated?
  • How does a person recognize when they’re being pragmatic about something important?
  • What are the proper reasons Christians should want to go to church?

If learning about philosophy and the different philosophies that are out there interest you or if pragmatism and Christian education interest you like it interest Bill and me; then thank God (and YouTube) you found this podcast episode. EP42: Why Do We Need a New Conservative Party? With JMJCat3

EP42: Why Do We Need a New Conservative Party? With JMJCat3

Is the Republican party fighting for conservative values? Is the Republican party too confident conservatives will vote for them? Has the Republican party been corrupted by career politicians? Is it time for new conservatives to replace career politicians? Or is it time for a new conservative party?

My friend Sergio from JMJCat3 Catholic Head Gear joins me on the Dani Flo Podcast to discuss his reversion to the Catholic Faith and why he thinks it’s time for a new conservative party or time for Republican politicians to actually fight for conservative values.

Sergio answers and discusses:

- Were you raised Catholic?
- What influenced you to start your Catholic clothing company?
- Why did you stop being liberal democrat?
- Does it take time to fully switch one’s personal-political ideology?
- Why are you unhappy with the GOP (Grand Old Party)/Republican Party?
- Should the Republicans support Trump? Or should Trump support the Republicans?
- What would a new conservative party do differently than the GOP?
- Are you concerned that Nancy Pelosi can single handedly hold up the stimulus bill?
- If a new Conservative party were available, what would you like to see from it?
- Do you think it’s possible for a new party to emerge at the state level?
- Are you unhappy with the lack of Republicans in office fighting to keep small businesses open during the pandemic?
- Does a party erode when it’s in power too long?
Do career politicians erode when they’re in office too long?
- Why did you try to protect church property over the summer?
- Are people like yourself unhappy with the GOP because it doesn’t seem like they’re fighting to conserve your values?
- If the second amendment goes, will freedom of religion go too?
- If the second amendment is abolished, do you think states will acknowledge the right to bear arms at the state level?
- Do strict gun laws reduce gun violence?
- Why do you think young Hispanics are attracted to AOC’s (Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez) ideas?
- What would you say to a career politician about your concerns?
What would you say to a politician that wants to start a new conservative party?

You're going to enjoy this episode if the topics of the Catholic Faith and conservative politics interests you as much as it interests Sergio and me . Please listen, follow/subscribe to the podcast, and most importantly: share this episode with everyone you know!

EP41: Dormant Family Values & Philosophy With Dr. Matt Flamm

EP41: Dormant Family Values & Philosophy With Dr. Matt Flamm

What are family values? Are they dormant? What has changed about family values over the years? What has changed about fatherhood? Is there a crisis of family values and fatherhood? Can philosophy help? What is philosophy? And what is philosophy good for? Dr. Matthew C. Flamm, professor and Department Chair of philosophy at Rockford University, joins me on the Dani Flo Podcast Video to discuss what has changed about family values and fatherhood in his lifetime and what philosophy is and what its good for.

Dr. Flamm answers and discusses:

- What’s it like being a father of a daughter for sixteen years?
- What is the difference for a father, between having a boy or a girl?
[Dr. Flamm asks me]
- What has changed about being a father in the last sixteen years?
- Did more men want to be fathers sixteen years ago versus today?
- Have family values gone to the wayside? Or have family values been re-defined?
What is the new definition?
- Is there a difference between the Religious right at a macro level versus the personal level?
- Is there a chance that family values are devolving?
- What is philosophy? What has philosophy said about parenthood?
- Why can’t science tell us how to be a good parent?
- Why can’t the soft sciences tell us how to be a good parent (i.e. psychology)?
- Is it possible to not know what philosophy is and still use it? Are philosophical questions not as important as what science and psychology can tell us?
- How do we know psychology or science can’t tell us what love is?
- Is it closed minded to think science can’t ever tell us what love is?
- Can philosophy be defined as: the wise way to do the things we care about?
- What advice do you have for young men that agree that family values are dormant?
- Why is philosophy worthwhile?
- Why is philosophy worth studying at the academic level?

You're going to enjoy this episode if the topics of: family values, fatherhood, and philosophy interest you as much as it interests Dr. Flamm and me . Please listen, subscribe/follow, and most importantly: share this episode with everyone you know!

What is an agnostic? What makes someone become an agnostic? What about atheism? What’s the difference between an agnostic and an atheist? And what about a theist? Does it only take faith to be a theist? Or does it take faith to be an atheist as well? My friend Ryan Hayes joins me on the Dani Flo Podcast to discuss how he became an agnostic and why he’s been living the majority of his life as an agnostic. Ryan answers and discusses:

- Is “Does God exist?” a philosophical question? Or a scientific question?
- How did we discover the method of science?
- How did you realize you are an agnostic?
- What is agnosticism?
- What kind of agnostic are you?
- Why did you go from a Christian to an Agnostic?
- What is the best argument for agnosticism?
- Does it take faith or knowledge to be an atheist?
- What would it take for you to move from Agnosticism to Atheism?
- What would it take for you to move from Agnosticism to Theism?
- What is the best argument for atheism?
- Do most people even care about Agnosticism? Atheism? Theism?
- Should more people care about Agnosticism? Atheism? Theism?
- What’s your advice for people that care about Agnosticism? Atheism? Theism?
- How do we encourage people to care about Agnosticism? Atheism? Theism?

You're going to enjoy this episode if the topics of: agnosticism, atheism, and theism interest you as they interests Ryan and myself. Please listen, follow/subscribe to the podcast, and most importantly: share this episode with everyone you know!

EP34: The Second Hispanic-Conservative Value

EP34: The Second Hispanic-Conservative Value

I talk about the second Hispanic-conservative value: starting and raising a family. Conservatives conserve things. It's in the name. The second thing we want to conserve as Hispanics is starting and raising a family as we see fit with limited government intervention except in very rare cases. I tie this value with the first and provide my reasons why I think this value is worth conserving. Please listen, leave a review, and share it with someone you know. Thanks my guys and my girls.
