Part 2 of 2023 Miami Hurricanes Opponent Preview Series - Texas A&M Aggies September 9, 2023

In Part 2 of the 2023 Miami Hurricanes Opponent Preview Series, I will preview the Texas A&M Aggies, our opponent at Hard Rock Stadium on September 9th at 3:30 pm ET on ABC/ESPN. You can forgive those over in College Station for panicking. The program is well-prepared for the new college football landscape. The program is not bound by anything. The head coach, Jimbo Fisher, is an excellent recruiter and a National Championship coach (winning in 2013 in Tallahassee with FSU). There should be no problems with zero opportunities and recruiting talent through the portal. All of this should be enough to become what Georgia is currently. Instead, the impressive recruiting classes of the past few years have been somewhat mediocre, some have flunked through the portal and some are just starting to emerge. And therein lies the rub in Aggieland. It's been a long time since the Aggies have had a double-digit winning season, and since Kevin Sumlin's last 11-win season in 2012, 7 other schools in the state (Houston, Rice, Texas, San Antonio, TCU, SMU, and Baylor) that have had more double-digit winning seasons than the Aggies. So it's no surprise that fans are a bit skeptical that things are going to get better for the Aggies after all the hype surrounding the 2020 season and the top-six rankings. So it's no surprise that fans are a bit skeptical that things are going to get better for the Aggies after all the hype surrounding the 2020 season and the top-six rankings The offense will be much better, but the Aggies will need a lot more out of the Defense. Yes, the Aggies were No. 1 against the pass in the nation, but that was because teams that could throw couldn’t get away from the ground assaults that ripped through the defense at will against SEC’s second-worse run defense. They lost their identity, killed time of possession, and blew the season – more on that in a second. Their defensive front, which was expected to be a formidable unit after a couple of impressive recruiting classes, must begin to pay dividends, at least from the players who remain. DT Walter Nolen was one of the star recruits who showed promise last season, while Shemar Turner and Fadil Diggs are both developing into their respective roles. While there may not be any new starters on their front six, the secondary has landed some impressive players, particularly at the Cornerback position. Tony Grimes from North Carolina and Josh DeBerry from Boston College are both projected starters in the NFL, while Sam McCall from Florida State is a highly regarded prospect who made his debut last season. The veteran of that secondary, S Demani Richardson is not the most talented player on the team, but he has made a lot of plays in his career with 245 stops and two touchdowns, leading a good group that must have made too many tackles last year. Their linebacking unit features a variety of contributors. Chris Russell is expected to remain one of the team's top tacklers, while Edgerrin Cooper excels at penetrating the opponent’s offensive line. These two will need to be at their best with several young and inexperienced players vying for playing time. From a Canes perspective, revenge will be on their minds from last year in College Station, in a game, I really believe the Canes should have won. This year at Hard Rock, this is one of the four games I have as a 50-50 toss-up. If this is the year the Canes take that next step, it needs to win this game. It’ll be close, but in the end, I’m going to say Canes in a very tight game and the defense comes up huge late to make a play to seal the win. In Part 3 of the series, I will preview the Bethune-Cookman Wildcats.

Part 1 of 2023 Miami Hurricanes Opponent Preview Series - v Miami (OH) September 1, 2023

Part 1 of 2023 Miami Hurricanes Opponent Preview Series - v Miami (OH) September 1, 2023

In Part 1 of the 2023 Miami Hurricanes Opponent Preview Series, I will preview the Miami (OH) Redhawks, our opponent at Hard Rock Stadium on September 1st (Friday Night). Chuck Martin, head coach of the Miami (OH) Redhawks, continues to produce at a high level. The goal is to make it to the MAC championship game, which he has done twice in nine seasons, most recently in 2019, but to take the program to three bowls in four seasons, with the 2020 campaign being the exception, is historic. The Redhawks went to three consecutive bowl games from 1973-1975, winning all three. This year's team is expected to make it the school's second consecutive three-in-a-row and the first time in five seasons that it has gone to four in a row. While the RedHawks have not been very good offensively, the same cannot be said on the defensive side of the ball and they should be even better on both sides of the ball this year partly due to their offense returning its star QB, Brett Gabbert (Brother of Blaine Gabbert), who coming off a 2021 season with 26 touchdowns and just six INTs. Gabbert started the 2022 season with four TD passes with no INTs before being sidelined by a shoulder injury. Gabbert is the veteran star, but Aveon Smith brings more of a running element to the offense. Smith rushed for 553 yards last season. Their leading receiver, Mac Hippenhammer, is gone after a couple of great seasons. The RedHawks have a relatively small receiving corps coming back, with Miles Marshall, Kevin Davis, and Nate Muersch. Muersch is a 6-5 215-pound hybrid tight end/wide receiver. However, their Offensive line continues to not be able to get out of its own way. After losing several key players to graduation and through the transfer portal, Their O-line will be relatively intact this year. The addition of OT Sam Vaughan, who missed most of last year with an injury, is a great sign. The running backs will have to step up to fill the void left by Miami’s stagnant ground game. Although Kenny Tracy is a step up in size, Keyon Mozee has been effective enough to be Miami’s top running back with 471 yards per game. The offense may have some concerns, but there’s little to worry about with a loaded defense coming off a MAC conference leading finish in scoring defense vs the run. Although, their pass rush hasn’t been great in recent years, but that’s about to change with almost all the starters back on their front six. The best pass rushers in the MAC are Brian Ugwu (3.5 sacks) and Corey Suttle (2.5 sacks), and they’ll be rotating together to form one of the MAC’s best fronts. LB Matt Salopek can do it all. He's not that big, but he's held up incredibly well against the run (second on the team in tackles for loss) and he can play behind the line of scrimmage. It's likely going to be up to redshirt freshman Camden Rogers to take over for Ryan McWood, who lead the team with a team-high 135 tackles. The secondary plays a big role in this D, with five of the eight leading tacklers coming from the back end of their Defense, specifically in their secondary. Their top corner John Saunders has moved on to Ole Miss, but the rest of their starters are back, including tackling phenom Michael Dowell. Safety Jacquez Warren is also back, and there are some potential all-MAC players in this group. The thing Miami (OH) has to do this year is put the ball in the hands of their backs. If this feels like a broken record about rushing the ball, that's because it probably does. The Redhawks rushed for a season-low 3.8 yards a carry and did not reach 2,000 yards. But when they ran the ball, they won. To emphasize this point, they went 5-1 when they ran for 120 or more yards and 0-6 when they did not. Since 2018, they have gone 16-0 when they ran for 185+ yards. My season prediction for the RedHawks is 7-5. From a Canes perspective, We cannot look ahead to A&M, it will need to and I believe will be able to handle business. In Part 2, I will talk about the Texas A&M Aggies.

My conversation with Alyssa Hertel of Des Moines Register (not recorded unfortunately).

My conversation with Alyssa Hertel of Des Moines Register (not recorded unfortunately).

Unfortunately, I was not able to gett the conversation recorded with Alyssa Hertel today. However, I was able to learn some things about Drake.

  1. They don't beat themselves like we do.
  2. This is a veteran team (3rd oldest in College Basketball)
  3. She thinks Darien DeVries could step onto the National Stage in this tournament.
  4. We mentioned how dominant Drake was v Bradley in the Conference title game.
  5. Also talked about Drake's 6'10" player Darnell Brodie. If Norchad can't go, that could be a matchup nightmare. Brodie against more physical players is prone to get into foul trouble. With no Norchad, Jordan and AJ would have to step up and neutralize Brodie down low.
  6. We also talked about how Darien DeVries got the job at Northern Iowa.

Bottom line, we have to show up in this game. If Norchad goes, that's a boost in the interior. If not, then Zay, Pac-Man, AJ, Jordan, Wooga are all going to have to really step up big time and try to shut down a very good Drake Team.
