Professional Writing in Personal Spaces

Professional Writing in Personal Spaces

In this episode of Social Quarantine, Danielle phones Zachary Lis to talk about how our workspaces and the objects within them influence and inspire professional and personal writing, especially during the COVID-19 crisis. Zach is an account manager and content creator at Account One Advertising. In his role, he frequently works with national retailers, such as Dick’s Sporting Goods, GNC and Garden of Life.

Today's conversation is inspired by a collection of essays called Rhetoric, Through Everyday Things, which was edited by Scott Barnett and Casey Boyle. Each essay in this book discusses and reflects upon the rhetorical meaning of objects and the power they possess. One essay that stands out in this collection is called “The Material Culture of Writing: Objects, Habitats, and Identities in Practice” by Cydney Alexis. In this piece, Alexis explores the meaning of the everyday objects in our writing spaces, and how these objects and materials have an impact on the way we work and our identity as writers.
