Danny Chats Ep40 Film Review - 'The other side'; Special guest Luke Alexander.

In this episode I talk to Luke about the short film he has made called 'The Other Side' which you can watch on YouTube - https://youtu.be/qBWLfXlRxO4

This film is based around three families that have all been through the transplant process. The film focuses on how the parents felt during that time and what they did as family to get through.

It also gives an in site into what life can be like after a transplant for young people and how their life can dramatically improve.  Luke has done an absolutely amazing job of producing and filming The Other Side and I highly recommend people go and watch it and possibly share it with friends.

Find it here on YouTube - https://youtu.be/qBWLfXlRxO4 Luke has also had a transplant himself, so we talk a bit about his journey and how we meet at the transplant games in Leeds 2022.

Luke is a great guy and if anyone would like to connect with him, his Instagram link is here - https://www.instagram.com/lukeisthele...

Danny Chats Ep33 Wilson's Disease; Special Guest Margaret Elizabeth

Danny Chats Ep33 features special guest Margaret Elizabeth.

In this episode, Margaret tells us how in her early twenties, Wilson's Disease left her fighting for her life.

Over a very short period, Margaret became so ill she could barely walk, write or feed herself. As you can imagine, this was a hugely worrying time for her and her family.

Once the doctors had diagnosed Margaret with Wilson's Disease, she recalls how she had to dig deep and find her inner strength and determination to get her life back.

With the proper medication, lots of support from her family and medical team, plus a huge effort both physically and mentally on her part, Margate is now living a quality of life some of her doctors said she might never achieve.

Margaret is a very proud Mum to a beautiful baby boy, and in this chat, she talks me through her pregnancy and how her doctors managed her medication throughout the whole process.

Wilson's Disease really can be a complex disease to deal with, and even now, Margate still has some bad days, although she says the good days definitely out way the bad.

Danny Chats Ep 30 Wilson's Disease; Special Guest Jaskaran Singh

Danny Chats Episode 30 features special guest Jaskaran Singh.

Jaskaran was diagnosed with Wilson's Disease in March 2017 but before that his Doctors had miss diagnosed him with Bipolar.  Its very common for WD patients to be miss diagnosed at first as the symptoms also match up with many other diseases and illnesses.

Once on the medication, Jakarans copper levels started to drop but he still has many of the neurological effects.

Jakaran is a hugely positive and inspirational person who has been making videos on his Youtube, giving other people tips on how he manages the neurological effects of his WD.

I also have a little chat to Jakarans parents who have been doing there best to support him, they also have some tips on keeping track of medication and how a change in dose may affect a person.

Danny Chats Ep 27 Kidney Transplant, Lyrics For Life, Transplant Games Jeff & Ryan - The Kidney Boyz

Danny Chats episode 27 features special guests Jeff and Ryan aka The Kidney Boyz

In this episode Jeff and Ryan tell me about their transplant experience and how that has lad them to join in at the Transplant Games and at Lyrics For Life.

After meeting each other at hospital and then learning that they both lived in the same area Jeff and Ryan began making music together and this where  The Kidney Boyz was born.

The Kidney Boyz wrote original songs based around being transplant patients and performed these songs at Lyrics For Life and also at The Transplant Games in America.

Its the first time I had heard about Lyrics For Life so the guys explained more about that too me.

It's such a cool idea that loads of transplant patients get together and perform songs of their choice in an X Factor style competition.

You can find The Kidney Boyz music on most streaming platforms or by clicking this link.  https://linktr.ee/TheKidneyBoyz

They also have a Youtube channel - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCdO-g1JJu4O2gPzUJxFUIcQ

Danny Chats Ep 24 Heart Transplant; Special Guest Hannah Sharma.

Danny Chats Episode 24 features special guest Hannah Sharma and we are talking about heart transplants.

Up until 2019 Hannah had had no real bad health issues in her words she was living her life.

Then during 2019 she had a bout of Norovirus and that was getting worse and worse but the GP's kept giving her antibiotics and that's all.   Hannah became so ill she had to move back to her parents house and from there she ended up in A&E and then admitted to hospital.

Hannah had in ICU fitted shortly after being admitted to hospital and that was in until she was given a heart transplant.

All of this came as a huge shock to Hannah and her family but she describes being put on the transplant list as a relief and was looking forward to getting her life back after transplant.

When in hospital Hannah found some blogs written by other transplant patients and this gave her the idea to start her own blog, Travels Tea & Transplants. https://www.travels-tea-transplants.com/

Hannah is very keen to travel and has done a lot in the past so we talk about travel pre transplant and post transplant and the possibilities of living abroad in the future.

I hope you find this chat interesting, I really enjoyed talking to Hannah about her transplant and travel experience.

Danny Chats Ep 23 Lung Transplant; Special Guest Rachel McGrorry

Danny Chats Ep 23 Lung Transplant; Special Guest Rachel McGrorry

Danny Chats Episode 23 features special guest Rachel McGrorry and we are talking all things Lung Transplant.

Rachels medical story starts when she was just 4 years old and she was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis.

The doctors did not think this would be an issue for Rachels organs but in 2011 Rachel got pneumonia and from then on she started to develop problems with her lungs and the doctors started to do more testing.

After having a lung biopsy it was evident that Rachel would need a lung transplant.

Luckily for Rachel she wasn't on the transplant list for very long before she got the transplant she needed.

This transplant changed Rachels life, it meant she could leave the oxygen tanks behind and she had a new freedom in life again.

I think this is an incredible story and the fact the doctors are able to perform such an operation still amazes me.

Danny Chats Ep 22, Wilsons Disease; Special Guest Linda Schwebke

Danny Chats Ep 22, Wilsons Disease; Special Guest Linda Schwebke

Danny Chats Episode 22 features special guest Linda Schwebke who is possible the oldest surviving Wilsons Disease Patient.

Linda's Wilson's Disease diagnosis came in 1974 after they had run many other tests on her due to being ill.

The diagnosis came after Linda was sent for an eye test and the optometrist  noticed the Kayser-Fleischer rings (copper rings) in her eyes.

At this time there had been very few patients diagnosed with Wilson's Disease so as you could imagine Linda was the talk of the town for all the medical professionals.

Linda remembers having server tremors at the time of her diagnosis and this took a few years to go back to normal after she was put on medication.

The medication has helped Linda loads though and since being on it her life has continued to be great and even at the age of 72 she continues to be active and is able to travel around and enjoy her life to the full.

Linda is a really happy, inspiring person to chat to and I think we can all hope to be as active and enthusiastic about life as she is when we get older.

This video is also great for people wondering how their life may be after being diagnosed with Wilson's Disease.

Big thanks to Linda for taking the time to chat with me.

Danny Chats Ep 21, Double Liver and Kidney Transplant; Special Guest Aaron Jackson.

Danny Chats Ep 21, Double Liver and Kidney Transplant; Special Guest Aaron Jackson.

Danny Chats Episode 21 features special guest Aaron Jackson.

Aaron was born with Biliary Atresia which is a disease that affects the bile ducts and in 2017 he started to become ill, forcing him out of work.   Then on Nov 10th 2019 Aaron ended up in ICU with 5%  liver function and he doesn't remember going to hospital, he was put to sleep and woke up on Nov 19th very confused as you would imagine.

Aaron was sedated again over Thanks Giving and he received his first liver transplant on December 9th but unfortunately that liver started to fail around December 15th. Aaron was then put back to sleep until January 16th.

Because the first liver started to fail Aarons doctors told him that he would also need a new Kidney as well as a new Liver. He was very lucky to receive both of these from the same donor on December 12th 2019.

Aaron remembers that his vision became very bad while he was in hospital due to the steroids he was on but once the medication was reduced his eyesight came back to him. The steroids can have a lot of side affects, hallucinations and poor vison are part of that but not everyone that takes them will have this.

We discus tactics to keep your mind and body healthy pre transplant and Aaron has some great advice for everyone. I also share my tips on having my medication stashed at friends houses and my car for the times that I forget to take them in the morning.

For someone who has recently been through so many medical procedures Aaron has a very positive mindset and I would highly recommend finding him on Instagram - @a_jacks_vibe

Danny Chats Ep 20, Liver Transplants & The Transplant Games; Special Guest Jillian Best

Danny Chats Ep 20, Liver Transplants & The Transplant Games; Special Guest Jillian Best

Danny Chats Episode 20 features special guest Jillian Best.

Jillian joins us from Canada and like all transplant patients she has an incredible story to tell.

Not only has Jillian had a liver transplant her mother has also had two liver transplants in her lifetime.

Jillian has not let having a transplant slow her down at all, since having her operation she has got back into swimming again. Jillian has now competed in a couple of the World Transplant Games and in the last games that she competed in she won 5 Gold medals and set 5 world records which to me is a huge achievement.

Jillian tells me about how she has been training recently and how Covid has affected her life so far.

Just recently Jillian and some friends have set up a charity called Move For Life Foundation and they will be using this to raise awareness and funds  around organ transplants to help other people currently on the waiting list.

Find them:

Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/move.for.lif...

Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/move.for.li...

Like many people Jillian has found sports a great way to recover from her operation and also to provide focus and gaols to achieve as she goes forward in life.

Its not often I am speechless but Jillian told me about the first fundraising task she has set her self and its definitely not a stroll in the park.

On August 3rd 2021 Jillian is going to attempt to swim across Lake Ontario which is 52km (33miles) and she predicts it will take about 18hrs. This is a huge task for anyone let alone a transplant patient and it goes to show that your goals can be almost limitless after your operation. Life is not over its just beginning.

Again I would like to encourage you to go and follow their page Move For Life or add Jillian Best on social media to keep up to date with all that they have going on.

Danny Chats Ep 19, Liver Transplant & The Transplant Games; Special Guest Thomas Stokes

Danny Chats Ep 19, Liver Transplant & The Transplant Games; Special Guest Thomas Stokes

Danny Chats Episode 19 features special guest Thomas Stokes.

Thomas contracted hepatitis C which caused liver damage and eventually lead to his liver developing a Cancerous tumour.  Thomas then needed a Liver transplant to save his life in 2017.

Thomas was a keen runner before his operation and kept up the training through his transplant process, he makes a good point in saying the fitter you are before the operation the better and faster your recovery will be after the liver transplant.

Thomas was soon back on his feet after his operation and began training for the American Transplant Games where he competed in a virtual Triathlon. He then flew over to England to compete in the World Transplant Games where he competed in track and field events before doing some site seeing in the UK.

For Thomas he said the main concern for him pre transplant was what would his lifestyle be like after the operation so being able to travel the world still and compete in sporting events shows there is lots of life to be had.

Its been great learning more about the games and the inspirational people that take part, the games are open to everyone that has had a transplant and its a great way to celebrate together the extra life we have been given.

We also talk about writing to the donor as it seems everyone has their own view on this and how it should be done.

Thank you for watching, if you would like to join me on an episode or have any questions please feel free to find me on Facebook or Instagram. I have also added a link to my blog where I talk more about my life with Wilson's Diseases and where that has lead me today.

Danny Chats Ep18, Liver Transplant & Transplant Games; Special Guest Nick Stonehouse

Danny Chats Ep18, Liver Transplant & Transplant Games; Special Guest Nick Stonehouse

Danny Chats Episode 18 features special guest Nick Stonehouse.

Nick's liver failure came on extremely fast and unexpected during a time that was already very hard for him and his family. Luckily Nick got a transplant in time and he is able to tell me his story.

During this chat we talk about writing to the donors family and Nick tells me how he has meet his donors family at a Transplant Games event, as you could imagine that was a very emotional day all round.

We go into more detail about how the games work in the U.K and Nick tells me what inspired him to take part.

Nick has competed in a few different events at the UK games on 3 occasions  and he has won a number of medals including 3 Golds in the discus throwing competition.

This is a great achievement and one that earned Nick a spot on the UK Transplant Team to compete in the World Transplant Games. The last world games was in Newcastle (UK) and Nick managed to win a bronze medal which again I think is an incredible achievement and what an honour to perform for your country.  Well done Nick

We also discuss coping with Covid and being in lockdown. Nick has some great words on this and essentially its all about doing what you are most comfortable with.

This chat has really inspired me to get involved with the transplant games and I hope it inspires others too.

As Nick says having the focus of the games and all the training that goes with it really helps to deal with the ups and downs and mental emotions that go with having a transplant and life in general.

You can find Nick on Instagram @tscontinental

Danny Chats Ep 17, Transplant and Transplant Games; Special Guest Tatiana Narveaz

Danny Chats Ep 17, Transplant and Transplant Games; Special Guest Tatiana Narveaz

Danny Chats Episode 17 features special guest Tatiana Narveaz.

In this episode Tatiana tells me about how she was being treated for a cancerous tumour for 2 years with Chemo before the doctors made the discovery that the tumour was  not actually cancerous.

Tatiana describes this as a huge relief as it then meant she was eligible for a Liver Transplant and luckily she did not have to wait long for the life changing operation.

After having the life saving transplant Tatiana found she had a new passion for sports and competing. This lead her to competing in the Transplant Olympics and the Latin American Transplant Games.

Tatiana is a great example of the peak physical fitness than can be achieved after transplant as she competes in one of the toughest events going, the Triathlon.   The triathlon is a mix of swimming, running and cycling and it takes more than just physical strength to complete, it is also a big test of the mental will power.

The mental willpower is possibly something lots of us transplant patients can understand as it takes a lot of PMA to get through a transplant, times when you want to give up but you don't. You dig deep and you find that extra bit of strength to keep going.

Tatian trains very hard and was good enough to win a silver medal in the World Transplant Olympics and a Gold medal in the Latin American Games which I think is an incredible achievement.

Tatian mixes her passion for sports with helping to raise awareness around Organ Donation in Columbia as at this current time there are very few registered donors.

You can find Tatiana on Instagram - @Tatiananarveaztx

It was a very inspiring chat and who knows maybe I will go to the transplant games to compete and I hope it may have inspired you to take up sport again or maybe for the first time.

Danny Chats Ep16 Liver Transplant; Special Guest Transplant Coordinator Amy Honeycutt

Danny Chats Ep16 Liver Transplant; Special Guest Transplant Coordinator Amy Honeycutt

Danny Chats Episode 16 features special guest Amy Honeycutt.

In this episode Amy tells me about needing a Liver Transplant at just 26 years old due having a bad reaction to medication she was on at that time. Her liver failed and she needed an urgent transplant.

Luckily Amy got her transplant and she recovered well. Now 10years later she is working as transplant coordinator in America which is awesome.

Amy and I discuss the transplant procedure from a transplant coordinators point of view, we talk about going through the evaluation stage and the tests people may need.

Technology is ever evolving and Amy tells me about a new Liver pump they have that keeps the transplant liver fresh and can even improve the its condition. This means they can now sometimes us a liver that would normally have been thrown away, which is brilliant.

As you can imagine Amy's favourite part is calling people to tell them they have a liver that matches, its an exciting time for everyone.

We discuss why some people get sent home after being called in for the operation and how its all about minimising risk to the patient and the new liver. I personally I know how hard that can be for someone on the waiting list to get called in then sent home, its a really emotional rollercoaster.

Amy tells me how important it is to follow the doctors advice before transplant especially when it comes to using drink and drugs.

Finally we talk about the emotional side to being given an organ and how that is a special thing but a tough time.

You can find Amy on Instagram @Lemons.and.honey.blog
