IDP Nation #201 Safety Training Camp Battles

IDP Nation #201 Safety Training Camp Battles

This week the guys take a look at some potential SAF Training Camp Battles that everyone should be paying close attention to.

IDP Nation EP #201

  • DT Chris Jones of the Kansas City Chiefs didn’t report to camp and begins holdout. The last report is negotiations are far apart

  • SAF Budda Baker of the Arizona Cardinals is expected to report to camp despite contract negotiations

  • Green Bay Packers placed EDGE Rashan Gary on the PUP list. The organization has until cutdowns to remove him or he’ll miss the first four weeks of the season

  • Free Agent CB Marcus Peters signed with the Las Vegas Raiders

  • Free agent LB Kyle Van Noy is visiting the Baltimore Ravens this week

  • The Jacksonville Jaguars are signing veteran DT Duwanne Smoot to a

  • one-year deal

  • The Tennessee Titans & SAF Kevin Byard agreed to a restructured contract

  • Detroit Lions Safety CJ Gardner-Johnson was carted off after a non-contact knee injury. Update: No structural damage and is considered day-to-day.

  • San Francisco 49ers DE Nick Bosa is not expected to attend training camp until contract negotiations  get done

  • Minnesota Viking DE  Danielle Hunter is at camp but is not expected to practice until his contract is resolved

  • The Seattle Seahawks signed OLB Uchenna Nwosu to a 3-year $59m deal

  • Miami Dolphins CB Jalen Ramsey suffers a meniscus injury during practice and will undergo surgery. Expected to miss 6-8 weeks.

Training Camp Battles (SAF’s)

  • Kansas City Chiefs (Bryan Cook or Mike Edwards)

  • New York Jets (Ashtyn Davis or Adrian Amos) lost Chuck Clark for the season due to an injury

  • Los Angeles Rams (Russ Yeast or Jason Taylor II or Quentin Lake)

  • New England Patriots (Adrian Phillips & Kyle Dugger are starters) with (Jabril Peppers & Jalen Mills as backups)

  • Green Bay (Rudy Ford or Jonathan Owens)

  • Cincinnati Bengals (Nick Scott or Jordan Battle)

  • Detroit Lions (CJ Gardner-Johnson, Brian Branch, Tracy Walker, or Kerby Joseph)

  • Los Angeles Chargers (Alohi Gilman or JT Woods)

  • Carolina Panthers (Jeremy Chinn, Vonn Bell, Xavier Woods, Eric Rowe)

  • Reddit u/RandomPhillyGuy

  • Which Detroit Lions SAF would you want for this season?

  • Reddit u/Maximum-Examination1

  • I think it's too early to see the 3rd thru 5 round rookies that beat out incumbent starters. I like NE Marte Mapu. Brian Branch of the Lions' 1st safety is probably high. Jammie Robinson if Jeremy Chinn is more big Nickel or both see the field. Chris Smith LVR. Antonio Johnson if he can beat Rashawn Jennings and love Andre Cisco. Sydney Brown Eagles lost the secondary player's 2nd safety was probably high. Camarillo Cornee on KC if good news teams got to play catchup. Brandon Hill if he wins Texans suck. It's more about reading camp news. Looking for nickel safety players to see the field?

  • Facebook u/Andrew

  • I'm curious about whether you should be getting any New York Giants linebackers not named Bobby Okereke. I believe that because the Giants are investing so little into the inside linebacker position and they might give Xavier McKinney the green dot, he's one of the top safeties to pick up. I'll take your thoughts on that.

  • I'd love to hear your take on the linebacking situation in Chicago. Sanborn came from nowhere last year, but now Edmunds and Edwards have joined the team and muddied the waters. What can owners of each of the three players expect for the coming season? Thanks!

  • Reddit u/powerbrows

  • I'd be curious how people are approaching Micah Parsons this season. Last year, he lined up almost exclusively as an Edge rusher and his overall numbers took a hit with the lack of tackles. Where are people ranking him this season?

  • Reddit u/SternFlamingo

  • I'd like some insight into what's happening in Houston. A great defensive coach now runs things and they saw an infusion of young talent. But they also hired a bunch of veterans who have turned in both good seasons and bad, at least from a fantasy perspective.

  • Can Denzel Perryman and Cory Littleton return to form?

  • Does Henry To'o To'o have a chance to follow in the path of fellow Bama alumni DeMeco Ryans?

  • Does their secondary have a chance to become elite?

  • And how long will it take for Will Anderson to start putting up numbers?

  • Reddit u/Astralnaut

  • Would love to hear about rookie prospects, who to be on the lookout for, and any fliers to target. Additionally, any thoughts on Anderson and Campbell, do you look for proven talent over premium prospects?

  • Reddit u/Deep-Court-2755

  • Is Campbell a taxi candidate this year or will he be a candidate to start in start 2 LB IDP leagues?

  • Reddit u/deleeeeeeeeeted

  • Should I/we get out from under Shaq Leonard or have faith he'll return to form? His first year was his best year, and with all the injuries, I'm thinking I should try and sell now while there's still hope. Thanks, guys.

News and Notes

  • Vikings released LB Eric Kendricks. Kendricks was in the final season of a five-year extension, but the Vikings opted to move on from the 31-year-old.
  • Rams released LB Bobby Wagner, Wagner's release will free up at least $5 million in cap savings.
  • The Titans released LB Zach Cunningham. Cunningham's release saves Tennessee $8.9 million while incurring a $4.5 million dead cap hit. They also released EDGE Bud Dupree
  • ESPN's Adam Schefter reports the Chiefs are expected to release EDGE Frank Clark.
  • The Rams are expected to release EDGE Leonard Floyd. Per ESPN's Field Yates, releasing Floyd would clear $3 million in cap space if done now. However, with a post-June 1 designation, they could spread out his dead money over two seasons and create $15 million in 2023 cap space. The Rams will reportedly look to trade Floyd if possible, but his time with the team appears to have come to an end.
  • Commanders released DB Bobby McCain. McCain's release saves the team $4.42 million, with ESPN's Adam Schefter reporting that McCain was the "odd man out" with the Commanders having young talent in the secondary.
  • The Athletic's Jeff Howe reports a trade of Rams CB Jalen Ramsey to Dallas is "picking up steam in league circles."
  • The Athletic's Nate Taylor writes Chiefs DT Chris Jones wants an extension "that will make him at least the second-highest player at his position."
  • As expected, the Commanders assigned the franchise tag to DL Daron Payne.
  • The Athletic's Joe Buscaglia writes he expects the Bills to "put their best foot forward" to retain LB Tremaine Edmunds.
  • The Score's Jordan Schultz reports Colts LB Bobby Okereke "has a significant market" and could sign a deal "in the $12-14M range, per season."
  • The Athletic's Daniel Popper writes it is "unlikely" the Chargers will exercise Kenneth Murray's fifth-year option.
  • Big Shoutout to MFL for the move towards true position with the IDP position designations.

League Openings

We have one opening in an IDP-only league with a $55 buy-in. We draft before the NFL Draft and currently entering season three of this dynasty league. If you are interested or want more details please reach out to me (@HollywoodTitan) or @KBellf54.

We also have an opening in one of our listener leagues. It's free but a very competitive league. Offense & defense dynasty league looking for a good owner.

News and Notes

Two Eagles have flown away as former Philadelphia OC Shane Steichen was recently hired as the Colts' new Head Coach while former DC Jonathan Gannon was hired as the Cardinals' Head Coach.

NFL Network's Mike Garafolo reports the Eagles are expected to "make a big push" to keep S Chauncey Gardner-Johnson this offseason.

The leader for the Denver Broncos' open DC job is Rex Ryan, followed by Vance Joseph and Kris Richard.

49ers EDGE Nick Bosa has been named the Associated Press 2022 Defensive Player of the Year. Bosa produced 51 tackles (41 solos), 19 TFL, a league-leading 18.5 sacks, and 48 QB hits this season.

Jets CB Ahmad “Sauce” Gardner has been named the Associated Press Defensive Rookie of the Year. Gardner had a stellar rookie season compiling 75 tackles (51 solos), 3 TFLs, a league-leading 20 passes defended, and 2 interceptions.

ESPN's Rich Cimini expects the Jets to release DE Carl Lawson. The Jets have $37 million tied up in Lawson ($15M) and LB C.J. Mosley ($22M). Releasing Lawson would clear his entire $15 million salary while Mosley could be asked to restructure.

Washington coach Ron Rivera said the team has opened contract talks with DT Daron Payne. The Commanders didn't extend Payne last offseason, letting Payne play out his fifth-year option. Payne went on to produce career-highs in tackles (64), sacks (11.5), TFL (18), QB hits (20), and passes defended (5).

The Athletic's Zac Jackson writes "it feels like" John Johnson won't be back with the Browns in 2023. Johnson had a down season and is one of Cleveland's best avenues to clear cap space this offseason. He's got a $13.5 million cap number and the Browns can save $12.6 million by cutting him.

The Athletic's Matt Barrows writes the 49ers are "unlikely" to pick up Javon Kinlaw's fifth-year option in May. Ravens DE Calais Campbell announced he would return for a 16th season in 2023.
