Teaching white school children that they shouldn't feel uneasy because white people once abused, even bought and sold black people as property, is an initial exercise in dulling a conscience. Of course, they should feel uncomfortable--at leastuncomfortable enough to be parts of movements that ensure such horrors as slavery can never happen again.

It should be obvious that a Black American is as much of an American as a White American; we shouldn’t need to have a clarifier with the word “American.” African-Americans cannot be distinguished from Americans.

Jesus of Nazareth affirmed the quarantine approach to preserving communal health; he affirmed concerned and loving parents who sought healing for their sick children; and he refused to turn opportunities for healing into political and/or theological debate or justification for seeing the sick die.

The relentless Senate efforts to restrict voting rights are both power plays and displays of white hatred of non-whites–not that these (mostly) Republicans riding orange elephants care about the freedoms and well-being of all white people either. Racism, right back out in the open again–often arm in arm with clerics and congregants from the religious right who teach their kids to sing at summer “Christian” camps: “They will know we are Christians by our love,” believing all the while that, “They will know we are Christians by our embrace of white supremacy.”

A new class of people has appeared in response to the evolving Covid pandemic:  the StubBOREbornites.  Once mask promoters, now they are vaxxed and boosted; and they are the new I'd-rather-be-dead-than-masked types--regardless of new Covid dangers and super-spreading.  

The archaeological confirmation that the Clotilda, the last known slave ship to bring Africans to the United States, has been found mostly intact in a river near Mobile, Alabama, is a staggering, ghostly reminder of the evil of slavery and the racism underlying it.  

Divine love, described by the ancient Greeks with their word, agape, referred to acting in the best interest of someone or some group regardless of emotions. Humans can try to love as God loves.  It is possible, even necessary, to love those whom we do not like--that is, to act in their best interest.  This ensures justice, and justice is the primary foundation of authentic spirituality.
