A cassette recording, made by Robert's grandfather Nelson Kerr in July of 1990, was recently discovered in safety deposit box in a bank in Mexico City. Join us in learning the harrowing criminal deed he claims to have committed in order to save the world. 

To decipher the Rite of Annihilation, Robert Kerr enlists the help of Santiago "Chano" Taboada, his former graduate assistant ... and former lover. Chano is able to crack the code, but as the two men reconnect intimately and work their way through the dangerous ritual, dark forces pull at their minds and souls.

As the wind howls and his house creaks, Robert Kerr explores the contents of the codex recorded in his grandfather's second journal. He is interrupted by a stern visitor who makes him a tantalizing offer.

As a cold front brings thunder and rain to Austin, Robert Kerr studies the first volume of the journals, in which his grandfather charted his three-decade search for the codex. An ominous phone call interrupts his late-night musings. Other dark hints also intrude. 

Back in Austin, Dr. Robert Kerr investigates the existence of the mysterious codex, uncovering a connection with a graduate student who went missing in 1975. As he digs deeper, he not only uncovers more inexplicable tragedy, he also reveals his own regrets and abuses of power. When he leasts expects it, a package arrives. 

When anthropologist Dr. Robert Kerr is visited by a strange old monk at his grandmother's wake in Mexico, he begins recording field notes about the mystery that unfolds around his grandfather's missing journals, which apparently contain a transcription of an ancient and somehow dangerous Mesoamerican codex. Along the way, he reveals the deep grief and selfishness that have alienated him from the few remaining members of his family. 

In this brief clip from "The Monks"—episode 1 of THE OBSIDIAN CODEX—we join Dr. Robert Kerr as he narrates the events of the previous night, which he spent in a funeral home in Mexico, performing a wake for his recently deceased grandmother. A dark dream and an unexpected visitor complicate his grieving.
