EPISODE 3: The impact of our food on climate change

EPISODE 3: The impact of our food on climate change

with 7 billion people on planet earth, we need to produce and eat a lot of food. The impact this has on our planet is huge and so making changes to the food cycle is a hugely important part of the climate change movement.

In this episode I interview, Michelle Marks, a Carbon Literacy tutor who delivers various courses on the subject but has a focus on the impact of food production, food consumption and food waste on climate change. Michelle shares three very simple areas of food choices and actions that people can take to help with the climate change challenge.

During the Podcast, we also discussed some useful resources and I'm delighted to have linked these in these notes too.

  1. A link to a website that looks at the carbon footprint of various different foods. Link is here
  2. A league table that reveals how various countries from around the world are performing versus their climate change objectives. Link is here
  3. Some of the different green accreditations that are credible. This link includes some that help support food choices.  Link is here
  4. A link to a food recipe site that lists some tasty climate-friendly recipes. Link is here
  5. A link to the Frankly Delicious Chocolate website. Remember this is the small business that makes climate-friendly chocolate. Link is here
  6. The water Refill App. Remember this is the app that allows you to see which establishments will allow you to fill your water bottle for free. Link is here
  7. The video with a talk about climate considerate farming from Carbon Zero Harrogate. Link is here
  8. And finally, a link to the type of water bottle that you can buy to filter your water removing harmful bacteria. The bottle can filter up to 1500 litres of water and is less than £26. Imagine the savings versus bottled water. Link is here
  9. A link to Michelle's website is here and her food training course is here

EPISODE 2: What is climate change? How bad is it and what can we do about it?

The host of the Your Children's Legacy Podcast, David Lilley, starts the modular process of supporting Carbon Literacy (i.e. helping people to understand the subject) and in doing so takes a holistic look at the subject of climate change.

As well as asking people to consider the impact on their children future bloodline generations, the podcast includes a simple explanation of the following areas of the subject:

  1. What global warming is
  2. What has caused climate change
  3. How and why we know this is a real challenge
  4. The impact of climate change
  5. What we can do about it

The Podcast refers to a 'carbon food calculator tool' on a website from the BBC. David promises to share the kink. This link is here
