214. Step-kids, triplets and a wonderful surprise! How in heck has she and her hubby raised such great kids? Helene Slutsky’s stories are funny and inspiring.

First off, Helene chooses to call her step-kids her 'chosen kids' - major distinction. Helene and Jeff Slusky have been featured in a previous podcast #204 about their courtship and marriage - it's hysterical. We brought Helen back to talk about how great kids come from great parents - it's no magic - it's, well, listen to Helene and you'll see, well, you'll actually will hear it, but you can easily envision it by Helene's great story telling.

211. “Laughter on Call” is a very creative and heartfelt business that brings humor and laughter to people in need.

In 2018, after noticing that her mother had become depressed facing Alzheimer’s, Dani Klein Modisett had the idea to hire a professional comedian to cheer her up. And it worked! The quality of the end of her mother’s life was transformed, thanks to the connection that was created through laughter. Her mother started eating again, joining in with her community, even singing. Dani sensed that this breakthrough would serve others. She wrote an article about the experience for AARP, and received hundreds of requests to connect comedians to loved ones around the world who were feeling isolated by Alzheimer’s. This inspired her to launch Laughter On Call, initially pairing comedians with Alzheimer’s patients and quickly expanding to training for healthcare workers and families in simple comedian’s tools to help mitigate feelings of isolation. Then COVID-19 hit and the whole world became isolated. Dani once again, had another light-bulb moment. Using the comedy prompts and Improv skills they relied on, she and her team developed virtual programming to give people around the world the comic relief they were craving. Laughter on Call programs are run by a diverse group of professional comedians who make the distinction between “laughing with” and “laughing at.” They use affiliative humor, proven to bring people together, lend perspective, and introduce levity to any situation. As the “sensitive” comedy company, they don’t exploit vulnerability or engage with sarcasm. They are committed to boosting morale and fostering inclusive environments, helping people create a strong and healthy foundation for freeing creativity and increasing productivity.

207. George Toma is the BEST of the BEST Groundskeepers who has ever lived. At 93 years old he explains his great success philosophy as simply, “You gotta work, and them some!”

Every sports fan in Kansas City knows who George Toma is. Most serious sports fans in the United States know who George Toma is. He is a living institution, not just for Kansas City sports but in the history of the National Football League. He is simply the greatest groundskeeper in the history of American Sports. Over the years, George has been given a handful of colorful nicknames. There’s the classic “Sodfather”. Nitty-gritty dirt man, the God of sod and Sultan of sod.

George officially retired from full-time work in 1999. He continues to work as a consultant for sports facilities and their groundskeepers around the United States. He was honored by the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2001 as the recipient of the Ralph Hay Pioneer Award. Toma was inducted into the Major League Baseball Groundskeepers Hall of Fame on January 8, 2012, as one of its charter members. In October of 2012, the K.C. Royals inducted Toma into the club’s Hall of Fame.

He has maintained the fields at numerous stadiums used by Major League Baseball and the National Football League teams. For much of his career, Toma was the head groundskeeper for the Truman Sports Complex in Kansas City, Missouri; which includes the Kansas City Royals' Kauffman Stadium, and the Kansas City Chiefs' Arrowhead Stadium. He was also contracted by the NFL to prepare the field for every Super Bowl for 56 years. In addition, Toma was called upon to supervise the grounds crews during the 1984 and 1996 Olympic Games, and the 1994 World Cup.

206. World-Class Singer Mark Preston has great stories about being a part of the Lettermen to how to properly sing the American National Anthem and how “Cruising is Back”

Singing since he was a child, Mark Preston took every opportunity he could to sing for those who would listen and those who believed in his talent. Joining the Air Force was Mark's first stop on his way to being a top performer.  His talent earned him accolades when he was selected as the Air Force's finest vocalist of 1975, and then toured with Tops in Blue.   This elite group is made up of the Air Force's top 20, most versatile entertainers.   During his time in the Air Force, Mark was awarded the American Spirit Honor Medal as well as the Air Force Commendation Medal.
Country Music Hall of Famer Tennessee Ernie Ford so aptly put it, "Cock your pistols, there will be no stopping this young man", and there hasn't been. From his string of impressive performances at one of Los Angeles' oldest clubs, The Horn, Mark decided to make his next career move to Las Vegas.  Mark Preston became a featured performer at The Dunes, The Silverbird, The Marina and The Sahara hotels.  Preston also performed on Harrah's stage in Reno and in Lake Tahoe. Variety magazine dubbed him "one of the finest entertainers in show business".
With several appearances on the hit series Vega$, as well as being the stand-in and photo double for the show's star, Robert Urich, Mark went on to do guest appearances on several network specials.
Again, none of this went unnoticed as Mark would find himself moving again for another opportunity to expand his already growing career.  Because of his acting on television and his singing, the Indiana native was asked to co-host The Bob Braun Show, a syndicated variety show originating in Cincinnati, Ohio.  Mark proved his versatility when he joined the Braun Show.  While he was performing on the Bob Braun Show, he was asked to open for the First Lady of Comedy, Phyllis Diller.  "I love to refer to Mark Preston as my protégé", said Ms. Diller.  "He has one of the strongest, most beautiful voices I have ever heard. He really gets to an audience.  He sings, acts, emotes, is handsome...everything".
Mark's unique talent preceded him again, and he was asked to join the world famous recording group, 'The Lettermen'.  Mark accepted and he performed for a total of 11 years with the group.  During that time, the group recorded several albums and CDs. There was a campaign to put forward the group's most recent recording "New Directions 2010" with the Les Brown Jr. Orchestra, for 3 Grammy nominations.  In 2001, the Lettermen were inducted into the Vocal Group Hall Of Fame and in early 2020, the group was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame.

Mark has performed on over 110 different cruise ship and his a continued headline for all of the premier cruise lines and lets us know how cruising is back.

192. Bonsai Expert Glen Hilton explains the history and care for raising Bonsai

As many of you may know, I have love and passion for raising Bonsai. It began when I met Glen Hilton when he worked for another nursery in Miami. Now, he has his own Bonsai nursery called Miami Bonsai Specialist. Along with Lourdes Arnaez, Glenn and Lourdes have a total of 27 years of experience when it comes to bonsai. In the beginning of their journey they saw the world of bonsai as a hobby. They have learned and worked with other masters from all over North America. Over the years they have had working experiences with bonsai.  Giving the experience and expertise to enjoy the art of bonsai so much that they decided to start a bonsai nursery.

I sat down with Glenn after spending hours watching him conduct a workshop at Miami Bonsai Specialist nursery in Miami. We had to wait until he carefully took care of each participant to begin the podcast. Just as we began the podcast a thunderstorm began to move through the area dropping the temperature 25 degrees. You will be able the hear wind as we talked through it. If you are interested in Bonsai this a fantastic introduction to the passionate world of raising and maintaining Bonsai.

The picture below is a Bonsai Glenn started with a cutting the size of his little finger. 27 years later, this is what Glenn nurtured and grew.

184. In Part 2 with Gary Jenkins he tells the true story of the River Quay and how the movie Casino was about the Kansas City Mafia.

Former Intelligence Unit detective with the Kansas City Police Department, Gary Jenkins tells the stories about the Kansas City F.B.I. and the Kansas City Police Intelligence Unit, investigated into how the Midwest La Cosa Nostra families used Teamster’s pension fund money to finance the straw owner of Las Vegas casinos. The price for casino owners to obtain loan approvals was high. Chicago, Cleveland, Chicago, and Kansas City mob bosses ordered “strawman” casino owner, Allan Glick to give casino jobs to mob pawns. These mob underlings skimmed cash from the counting rooms and sent it back to the Midwest mob bosses.

Gary tells the real feud that blew up the River Quay, literally. Then he explains while law enforcement is listening to the Civella’s feud with the Spero brothers by surveillance, they discover the Civella’s scamming money from the Casinos in Las Vegas. Again this the real stuff folks, it’s not a movie. The movie Casino was based on the KC Mob.

Listen to Gary’s Podcast called "Gangland Wire." He has well over 400 podcasts about true stories of Organized crime all across the United States.

179. Trish & Gary Walker have been through drug/alcohol addiction, cancer and suicide. Yet it was ‘Monkey Brain Art’ that turned it all around to heal others help others and themselves. What a story!

Gary Walker suffered a severe back injury in the Military. After years of attempting to heal his chronic pain he got addicted to pain killers and alcohol. It was a call from Gary’s mother that got him stop his planned suicide attempt because she asked him to paint her a picture. While all of this is was going on, Trish was running their janitorial service, then got breast cancer, then covid. Their story how they have stayed together and are helping vets, first responders and nurses deal with their PTS is wonderful. Their mission is to help calm the unsettled minds of Veterans and First Responders through art, meditation and mindfulness. What a beautiful story of love, commitment and faith.

173. A podcast about a guy in the Pod business, the storage kind. Bill Munholland is fun, lively and quite the entrepreneur.

Bill Munholland is in the Pod business. He is responsible for those white storage units taking over the storage business. Before that he had his own Ad agencies in Florida, Detroit and LA. His major client was General Motors. He explains what it was really like to deal with such a massive client, and this wasn’t any cute little episode from Mad Men – this was the real deal.

Bill is an entrepreneur. He started as a kid and has never stopped. As you listen to this podcast you can hear how much fun we both were having and how his failures led him to greater successes. And wait, there’s more. After we stopped the first podcast was over, we kept talking and laughing so much we had to make a part two.

I hope you enjoy Bill Munholland as much as I did talking with him.
