Dr Robert Bradley (Eating Peru) Well Seasoned Librarian Season 13 Episode 18

A Gastronomic Journey by Robert Bradley (released fall 2023). Bob Bradley started out as a wine merchant for New York City’s most acclaimed restaurants. A trip to Central America put him on the path to studying Mesoamerican art history and archaeology at Columbia University. He is now an associate professor in the School of Art and Design at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. His meticulously researched Eating Peru is the product of twenty-five years of exquisite digressions from what Bradley might call his “real job”—the culmination of decades of his personal discoveries about the food of Peru and the history that led to its current culinary status. Bradley can share his fascinating experience sampling food lore, Andean anthropology, history, linguistics, and the pleasures and perils of travel within Peru.

Jenny Gomes (Perfectly Preserved/The Domestic Wildflower/Pressure Canning Cookbook) Well Seasoned Librarian Season 13 Episode 14

Jenny co-hosts the popular podcast "Perfectly Preserved" and shares her canning wisdom and love for all things homemade on her blog, "The Domestic Wildflower." Join us as we chat with Jenny about the art of preserving, the joy of feeding your family with seasonal bounty, and maybe even a few kitchen mishaps and lessons learned along the way.

Vanessa Baca (Food in Books Podcast) Well Seasoned Librarian Podcast) Season 13 Episode 5

Vanessa Baca (Food in Books Podcast) Well Seasoned Librarian Podcast) Season 13 Episode 5

Bio: I’m Vanessa, and welcome to my blog. If you’re a fellow bookworm and foodie, you’ve come to the right place.

I really feel that cooking is an act of love, and as I have progressed with this blog, I’ve come to know myself in a way I hadn’t previously. I’ve opened my home, and heart, to many people in the process of cooking and writing, and it’s made me a better person for it.

As well, reading is something that is in my blood. I can’t imagine a world without books. Books have saved me so many times, have helped me travel, have expanded my worldview, and have often been a source of therapy and comfort.

Combining my two great loves of cooking and reading has inspired me to expand my own horizons, in both the books I read and the food I cook. I’m happy you’ve stopped by, and please check back each week to see the latest book and food combination. And feel free to send me your suggestions about books and the food described in them, and I’ll try them out!

michelle auerbach, nicole civita(Feeding Each Other: Shaping Change in Food Systems through Relationship: Resetting Our Future) Season 12 Episode 18

Bios

Michelle Auerbach: Michelle Auerbach is in the business of saving lives and increasing bravery. When things fall apart, Michelle is the world builder and a community maker who uses all her geeky skills to transform what we’ve got to work with into a more just and loving place where more people get taken care of better. She holds an MFA in prose writing from Naropa University and is completing her PhD in Transformational Leadership with her dissertation on story as a technology for trauma aware change for individuals, organizations, and communities. She has published two novels, The Third Kind of Horse about life during the AIDS crisis in NYC in the 1980’s and Alice Modern which deals with Nazi era Vienna and the desire to break free of old worlds that no longer serve. Both books are lenses through which to see the crucible of redemption and transformation. Her first nonfiction book is Resilience: The Life Saving Skill of Story. She writes for the New York Times, the London Guardian, and Sunset Magazine as well as editing and ghost writing for several publishers and publications.

Nicole Civita is a human, mother, partner, and friend who is preoccupied with the possible and works like hell to bring its most beautiful bits into being. She’s a shapeshifter who has, over the course of her career, taken form as an educator, pracademic, ethicist, attorney, administrator, mentor, author, advocate, and consultant.

Often, though not always, she’s focused her work on shaping change in and through the food system. Nicole’s efforts propelled multi-year projects to drastically reduce food waste, revitalize regional food systems, seek justice for agricultural and food workers, explore ethical dilemmas across the food chain,

and develop systems-aware, equity-enhancing laws and policies.

studies, many experts urge examination of the food system from farm-to-fork. Nicole has always preferred to think about the food system from ecosystem-through-farm-to-community. Even more conceptually, she imagines a path guided by ethics that leads to relationship.

Paul Fehribach (Big Jones Cookbook/Midwestern Food) Well Seasoned Librarian Podcast Season 12 Episode 17

Bio: Paul FehribachBig Jones

Born and raised in Jasper, Indiana, Paul Fehribach's small-town upbringing instilled in him a passion for heritage recipes. His summers were filled with fishing, hunting, foraging for mushrooms and helping in the garden at his grandparents' farmhouse. Fond memories of working alongside his mother in the kitchen and cooking from family heirloom recipes resulted in an appreciation for fresh, seasonal ingredients and a love for traditional cooking. As the executive chef and co-owner of Big Jones in Chicago, he showcases his homespun-style of cooking and commitment to finding and preserving historic foods of the American South.

Chef Paul is a graduate of Indiana University's Jacob School of Music in Bloomington, Indiana. Following graduation, he served as the executive chef at Chapman's Restaurant & Bar where he further explored cooking with local and organic ingredients and heirloom seeds. In the early 1990s, he joined the opening group of Laughing Planet Café in downtown Bloomington before moving to Chicago in 1996. He transitioned to the front of house while working at restaurants Hi Ricky Asian Noodle Shop in Deerfield, Ill. and finally Schubas Tavern & Harmony Grill.

By 2008, Paul was ready to return to the kitchen. He branched out on his own with the opening of his restaurant Big Jones. His regionally-inspired fare with Cajun, Creole, Lowcountry and Appalachia influences has garnered both local and national acclaim, including Best New Restaurant by Chicago Magazine. With a focus on utilizing seasonal heirloom crops, he actively supports co-ops, small farmers and frequents Chicago's Green City Market. When not hard at work in the kitchen, Paul volunteers for the Healthy Schools Campaign aMnd Chicago Public Schools' "Go for the Gold" campaign to promote healthy eating in schools and combat childhood obesity.

Grace Lin (Chinese Menu: The History, Myths, and Legends Behind Your Favorite Foods) Well Seasoned Librarian Podcast Season 12 Episode 16

Grace Lin (Chinese Menu: The History, Myths, and Legends Behind Your Favorite Foods) Well Seasoned Librarian Podcast Season 12 Episode 16

I grew up in Upstate NY with my parents and 2 sisters, whom are featured in many of my books, including "Dim Sum For Everyone!" and my novels, "The Year of the Dog" and "The Year of the Rat." My mother and I were the star characters in my first book, "The Ugly Vegetables"--I cut both my sisters out of that story! They were quite upset with me and made me promise never to cut them out again. And since then, I haven't...yet.

While many of my books highlight my family, not all of them do. My Newbery Honor-winning novel "Where the Mountain Meets the Moon," is an Asian inspired fantasy that some people call a Chinese 'Wizard of Oz,' and my early reader "Ling & Ting" is inspired by the old 'Flicka, Dicka & Ricka' books I read when I was young.

I hope you enjoy my books. Please visit my website: www.gracelin.com for more info about them (behind the scene stories and pictures) as well as other amusing anecdotes!

Cheryl Leutjen (Love Earth Now) Well Seasoned Librarian Podcast Season 11 Episode 1

Cheryl Leutjen (Love Earth Now) Well Seasoned Librarian Podcast Season 11 Episode 1

Bio:

Cheryl Leutjen’s deep love of Earth, as well as her hope for a bright future for her children, fuel her passion for responding to the challenges of our time with heart, hope, humor, and spiritual practice. Cheryl writes and speaks to share her experiences on the razor’s edge between Earth-mindfulness and eco-madness, not because she’s got it all figured out, but in solidarity with anyone else who’s fumbling along the path of more conscientious living.

She draws from her experience as a geologist, attorney, small business owner, spiritual practitioner, wife and mother to claw her way out of the abyss of eco-despair. She seeks solace from the sages in Nature who reveal the wisdom she needs to navigate a more Earth-loving path.

Cheryl credits the Modern Day Priestess training with Reverend Kate Rodger, steeping in ancient wisdom ways for practical use in the modern world, for inspiring the spiritual growth that now guides her “Love Earth” work.

She resides in Los Angeles, where she takes copious yoga classes, digs up the yard and throws a lot of darts as therapy. She facilitates the Natural Muse Meetup for Earth-loving writers. She serves as Vice-President of the Board of Directors of the North East Trees nonprofit organization, “bringing Nature back” to nature-poor communities around Los Angeles County.

Her book, Love Earth Now, won a 2018 Silver Nautilus Book Award. You can buy it here https://amzn.to/3qBl3Pr

She lives with her husband (aka her Sanity Supervisor), two children, her muse Atlas Cedar, and three cats who care not one whit about any of her credentials.
