Maria Provenzano - EVERYDAY CELEBRATIONS FROM SCRATCH Season 7 Episiode 15
Bio: I’m a lover of all things crafty and am obsessed with cooking and feeding those around me. I’m self-taught...and mom-taught. My creativity was sparked at a young age by the most imaginative, organized, detail-oriented person I know…my mom. I grew up a “maker” creating EVERYTHING from scratch. My parents instilled in me to treat all of life’s moments, even the little ones, as memorable and unique, and that is what’s at the heart of From Scratch. My hope is to inspire others to be hands-on in your life. In this digital age that we live in, it can be hard to step away from our electronics and truly connect with those around us. That’s what From Scratch is about -helping you be present in the everyday moments and giving you the inspiration and tools to create something that is unique to you. I guarantee, if you start to cook, craft, and create your happiness will increase, and so will the happiness of those around you. When I’m not crafting, you can find me in Los Angeles with my husband and two beautiful (and crazy) boys, with my gal pals, doing yoga or drinking coffee. Fair warning — 99.9% of the time I am covered in flour, paint, or glitter! Follow along this incredibly fun journey as we create something wonderful together. Rose Levy Beranbaum (The Cookie Bible/The Cake Bible) ENCORE PRESENTATION The Well Seasoned Librarian Season 7 Episode 11
"Rose Levy Beranbaum is an American baker, cookbook author and blogger. She pioneered the reverse creaming technique of cake-making. In this process, the fat and flour are mixed first before adding the remaining ingredients. By coating the flour in fat, gluten development is inhibited, helping to prevent toughness Rose has been called the “Diva of Desserts” and “the most meticulous cook who ever lived.” And add this recent accolade—-“If ever there was a cookbook author who could place her hands on top of yours, putting you through the proper motions, helping you arrive at just the right touch, Beranbaum is the one.” Rose’s first book, The Cake Bible, was the 1988 winner of the IACP/Seagram Book of the Year and the NASFT Showcase Award for the cookbook that has contributed most to educating the consumer about specialty foods. A culinary best-seller, The Cake Bible is currently in its 38th printing. Rose’s Christmas Cookies, was the 1990 winner of the James Beard Best Book in the Dessert and Baking Category. The Pie and Pastry Bible, published in 1998, received many kudos including: Food & Wine Books “Best of the Best: The Best Recipes from the Best Cookbooks of the Year” and Coffee & Cuisine “Best Cookbook” award. Rose's newest and most comprehensive book, The Bread Bible, was the 2003 winner of the Gourmand World Cookbook Awards in the Best Bread Book Category. It was listed by Publisher's Weekly and Food & Wine as one of the top ten books of 2003, and by Fine Cooking as one of the top 12. From quick breads, such as muffins, biscuits, and scones, to yeast breads, such as seeded wheat breads, Jewish rye, baguette, and brioche, this is a collection of her favorites, with innovative techniques that will guarantee making a successful bread baker of anyone who so desires. Steadfast in the world of food writing, Rose is a Contributing Editor to Food Arts Magazine where “Rose’s Sugar Bible” (April 2000) received two prestigious awards: The Association of Food Journalists Award for the Best Food Feature in a Magazine and The Jacob’s Creek World Food Award for Best Food Article. Neil Buttery (A Dark History of Sugar) Well Seasoned Librarian Podcast Season 7 Episode 9
Neil Buttery Bio "I have been writing about British food for over ten years, I began with a blog about Jane Grigson’s book English Food, as a hobby. Bitten by the food history bug, I started a second blog, British Food: A History. After inadvertently teaching myself to cook and write on the subject, I began producing food for an artisan food stall, which then developed into a pop-up restaurant, and then into a restaurant, 'The Buttery', where I was director and head chef. More recently, I have focused on writing and media. My first book 'A Dark History of Sugar' in currently in press with Pen & Sword History, and I have just started my second, a biography of the great Elizabeth Raffald. Interest in the blogs has brought work with The Telegraph and the BBC. Most recently I was the resident food historian on Channel 5’s 'Wonderful World of Cakes'. I also write and present my own podcast ('The British Food History Podcast'), which has just finished [at the time of writing] its second season. I’m interested in almost every aspect of food and cookery: previous careers have included secondary school teacher and evolutionary biologist (specializing in social behavior), and it’s wonderful to use the skills gained in those professions today." Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month Encore Episode: Michelle Tam (Nom Nom Paleo Let's Go 3/Nom Nom Paleo) The Well Seasoned Librarian Season 7 Episode 4
This is an Encore Presentation of the Well Seasoned Librarian Podcast to honor Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month. Asian American food writing has persisted and come into its own, and pays tribute to a variety of voices within an vast and diverse community. Here is a representation of one out of many Asian American food writers you can read and follow. To Find out more about Asian American and Pacific islander Heritage Month go to the below website, there are some great links there. https://asianpacificheritage.gov/  Bio "I’ve always loved the sights and smells of the kitchen. My mother was (and is) an excellent cook, and as a kid, I was her little shadow as she prepared supper each night. From her, I gained a deep, abiding love for magically transforming pantry items into mouth-watering family meals. I wanted to be a flavor scientist, But I also had a long and torrid affair with chemically-enhanced, laboratory-concocted “foods” that continued into my college years. At Berkeley, I majored in Nutrition & Food Science because I wanted to become a flavor scientist and create lab-concocted “Frankenfoods” for a living. (Not kidding.) At the time, the faculty was packed with world-class biochemists and food researchers — all of whom were strong advocates of the low-fat dogma. Like a sponge, I soaked it all in, and modified my diet accordingly. Steak and eggs were out; bagels and crackers were in. In the summer of 2010, I made the decision to go Paleo—and when I decide to do something, I commit all the way. I immediately cut out all grains, legumes, sugar, and processed food from my diet, and read everything I could about the science behind the Paleo diet. I quit doing all the crazy cardio and starting doing CrossFit. I was all-in. And you know what? I feel great! After working graveyard shifts for more than a decade, I’d been mentally and physically lagging—but once I changed my diet, I found that my energy levels improved significantly, and my moods were sunnier, too. I was a nicer mommy. Paleo’s the only approach that’s managed to improve my body composition and fuel me with enough energy to wrangle two small boys, hold down a full-time night shift job(I recently quit after 12 years of working graveyard shifts at the hospital!), cook for a houseful of hungry cavepeople, lift heavy(ish) stuff in the gym, and maintain a food blog. A half-year after switching to a Paleo approach to nutrition, I started Nom Nom Paleo to chronicle my culinary adventures. Since the fall of 2010, I’ve been regularly posting recipes and writing about how to stay Paleo when eating out. I offer kitchen tips and review my favorite cooking gadgets. Sophie Minchilli ( Sweetness of Doing Nothing) The Well Seasoned Librarian Podcast Season 7 Episode 3
Bio" I am Sophie Minchilli, half American, half Italian, born and raised in Rome. I have lived here all my life except for my time at university in London. While I loved my experience there, all I could think about was Italy, Italian food, Italian people and Italian markets. I finally realized that although my body was in the UK, my heart and soul were in Italy. I think that while Italy is a country with many challenges, once you experience Italian lifestyle, it’s hard to adapt to anything else. So as soon as I graduated, I moved back to Rome. I decided to entirely dedicate my life to food, in any way possible. Soon after, I started working with my mother (now business partner), leading food tours and cooking classes in Rome, Puglia and Umbria. I’ve recently written a book, The Sweetness of Doing Nothing: Live Life the Italian Way with Dolce Far Niente (Harper Collins April 2022) The book pulls together so much of the Italy I love to share. There are chapters on Family, Friends and Leisure and of course some of my favorite recipes. But it’s mostly a very sweet book about how to incorporate the concept of Dolce Far Niente – taking the time to enjoy life – into your own routines." Chetna Makan (The Great British Bakeoff,Chetna's Healthy Indian,)The Well Seasoned Librarian- Season 7 Episode 1
Bio: "I was born and brought up in a small town in Central India called Jabalpur. I then moved to Mumbai to train as a Fashion Designer in NIFT. After my college, I worked in Mumbai for a few years before moving to the U.K. in 2004. I have always been interested in food and cooking and have been greatly inspired by my mum’s cooking who has taught me everything I know about flavours. After having my 2 children I found my interest in baking grow, it was a perfect way for me to relax and found it very relaxing. I am a creative yet meticulous baker and find baking a perfect outlet for my creativity. Trying out new techniques and challenging myself is what keeps me going. Being on Great British Bake Off 2014 has been an amazing journey and has given me the confidence to try new combinations of flavours. I will always cherish this experience and the time I spent in the tent with my fellow bakers. Soon after the show, I started work on my first book which is all about Indian flavours in some very western bakes. The book is called ‘The Cardamom Trail’ and was published in 2016. After that, I went on to write my second book called ‘Chai, Chaat and Chutney’ which is all about Indian street food from the 4 corners of India. I wrote this book after intensive research into the 4 cities of India to find some of the most delicious street food. This book was published in 2017. My third book ‘Chetna’s Healthy Indian’ is all about the food I cook at home for my family. It is the quick, delicious and healthy recipes we enjoy to balance out all the cakes I bake. Raquel Sharp (Charlie Cart) Well Seasoned Librarian Podcast Season 6 Episode 19
About Charlie Cart: Food education anytime, anywhere. The Charlie Cart Project was founded in 2015 by the former Director of the Edible Schoolyard Project and a team of educators and designers. They set out to create an affordable and comprehensive food education program, giving kids the power to make healthy choices for life. The result is an all-in-one program—a kitchen on wheels and a full curriculum with classroom-tested recipes—connecting the dots between food, health and the environment. Food education gets to the heart of our most pressing issues. Health, climate, and economy, all are intrinsically linked to our food system. If we expect the next generation to make choices that support their health and the health of the planet, we have to provide basic education about food and its connections to the world we live in. Food education is critical to improved health outcomes. Today, 1 in 6 kids in the U.S. will go hungry. 1 in 3 will develop Type 2 diabetes in their lifetime. Food security and healthy eating require two things: access to fresh, healthy food; and basic skills to prepare that food. It’s simple. Food education is essential for lifelong health. (From Website) Raquel Sharp Bio  Raquel started her food education career with the Edible Schoolyard in Berkeley, CA and went on to become a founding staff member of the Edible Schoolyard at Grimmway Charter Schools, where she designed and built a food education program from the ground up. Raquel has more than 10 years classroom experience as a food educator and holds a masters in Health Education from Teachers College, Columbia University. Jonathan Kauffman (Hippy Food) Season Six Episode 12
Bio: "I grew up in a liberal Mennonite family that had ditched headcheese, dumplings, and sauerkraut in favor of lentil casseroles and tofu stir-fries. After college, I cooked professionally for several years in San Francisco before leaving the kitchen for the supposedly lucrative world of journalism. I reviewed restaurants in the Bay Area and Seattle for 11 years as the staff critic at the East Bay Express, the Seattle Weekly, and SF Weekly. From 2014 to 2019, I was a features writer at the San Francisco Chronicle, where I covered the intersection of food and culture, with a particular focus on small and immigrant-owned restaurants — labor abuses in Taquerias, 50-year-old-neighborhood favorites ignored by the press, independent restaurants struggling with rampant gentrification. I have contributed to the Wall Street Journal, Eating well, New Yorker, Bon Appetit, Hazlitt, Los Angeles Times,  San Francisco magazine, Eater, Men’s Health, Wine & Spirits, and Lucky Peach (RIP). My first book, Hippie Food, came out in 2018. My reporting and criticism have won awards from the James Beard Foundation, the International Association of Culinary Professionals, the Association of Food Journalists, and the California Newspaper Publishers Association, and my articles have been anthologized in several editions of Best Food Writing."
