Deathcakes Podcast - No Jibba-Jabba FM Network

Deathcakes re-establishes its presence in 2020 by going back to one of the pillars of its past: cartoons!   By the mid-90s though, Saturday morning blocks were all but gone, partly due to the inception of Turner Broadcasting's new cable offering known as Cartoon Network.  Jay and illy are back to guide you through their memory of its beginnings, to its eventual, indelible mark on American pop culture.

When Jay, illy and Ghost (then known as Rokmore, in a special guest spot) linked up in an early episode of Deathcakes to talk Wu-Tang, they had no idea at the time that the Keepers of the Funk podcast and the advent of No Jibba-Jabba FM were on the horizon.  They certainly didn't predict Wu-Tang: An American Saga to hit Hulu!  Now that all three scenarios have come to pass, the three hosts join up yet again in search of some Shaolin graffiti and to weigh in on the docu-drama (spoiler alert: they LOVE it!)

After several weeks touring as a roadie for Joe Public on the chitlin circuit, Jay returns to the network and he and illy hop right back to where they left off in last episode's Marvel/MCU conversation. They also look at the current state of Warner/DC flicks and hypothesize potential game changers in that particular cinematic landscape.

On the fiftieth episode of Deathcakes, which just so happens to land shortly beyond the one year anniversary of the death of Prince, Jay & illy throw back a few and pay tribute(...?) to the fallen icon by watching 1990's "Graffiti Bridge", the oft-maligned and probably better off forgotten sequel to the cult classic that was "Purple Rain". Prince fan and friend of the Network, Ryan Warnberg (Minneapolis native and host of Bodega Box Office), lays down his funky weapon, joins them on the pod and adds his brand of film enthusiasm and a bit of hometown spin to the discussion!

Having already named his favorite entrance themes from the late 80s/early 90s in a past episode (see Deathcakes, Episode 20.5), illy adds several more from the late 90s and modern-day to round out his list, while Jay listens. illy then releases some World Wrestling Ventilation regarding the SummerSlam PPV and some of the mishaps of WWE creative he's witnessed over the past few months, praises NXT, and ultimately invites anyone who's been away from wrestling to come back and give the current product a shot. Words from a born-again wrestling fan, in the finale of DCP Rasslin!

illy finally reveals his top five wrestlers list and names a handful of current day favorites... but not before being joined by his daughters, to react to their viewing of NXT Takeover that same night, rattle off their predictions for the matches at SummerSlam, and name their OWN favorite wrestlers and entrance themes.  It's a wild ride, folks!

Voltron, a childhood favorite of Jay's and illy's, has seen a couple disappointing reboot attempts over the years (Voltron Force, or Third Dimension, anyone?) but by the grace of God, Dreamworks and Netflix have finally gotten it right with Voltron: Legendary Defender!

Jay, who has been away for five episodes, drops down outta the rafters and returns to his hosting seat on Deathcakes Podcast! As a "fairweather fan" during the 80s and most of the 90s, he's got a few random WWF memories to touch on, but by 1996 til the end of the decade, he was a regular full-time viewer of WCW programming during the red hot Monday Night Wars. You'll also hear all about his top five wrestlers, his favorite entrance music (plus a hilarious story linked to one of them) and who just might be his most HATED wrestling personality of all time!

illy's brother Nelson jumps into the fray and covers many of his '90s wrestling (majority, Attitude Era WWF) memories, the snacking rituals he ushered in for Monday night viewing (shouts out to Old Vienna, St. Louis' hometown snacks!), his lifelong wrestling fan grandfather, and his own, real-life, Shane McMahon-esque high spot fail! *roffle*

#DCPRasslin and the MWO chapter continue, this time with Ghost (Keepers of the Funk) in the guest chair!  Late 80's and early 90's NWA/WCW programming, how it compared to that of the WWF's at the turn of said decade and how Ghost converted illy into a WCW fan are the emphasis, but they also dig through memorable moments across both major companies, wrestling toys (just what in the world was the JWA??) and of course, you'll get Ghost's favorite entrance themes and top five favorite wrestlers!

Pro Wrestling.  An integral part of illy's childhood and teen years, the topic has been a glaring omission in Deathcakes Podcast history. That ends NOW, with the premiere of the #DCPRasslin block! illy's sister takes the guest host spot in this episode, and before giving a list of her favorite wrestlers and entrance themes, the two pseudo-twins run the gamut of WWF and WCW talk, reliving their early fandom in the 80s, straight through to its apex in the mid to late 90s!

The DCP crew converses with illy’s friend Iris, who shares her past experiences pulling double duty as a recording artist and record label CEO, to her current endeavors as an assistant director to several upcoming web series. All that, plus the usual Deathcakes-certified throwback conversation!
