89. Avoidance = Denial
“What do you mean I’m avoiding? I’m facing everything head on.” I hear this frequently and sometimes catch myself in a state of avoidance. It takes a lot of self-reflection and awareness to notice this. Avoidance can be a natural built-in protective tendency in our body’s nervous system. We might not even realize when our bodies are keeping us from processing, cleaning out and re-writing the script. In this episode, we delve into the concept of avoidance and its detrimental effects on us and how it can keep us stuck in toxic or unhealthy relationships. The discussion covers the nature of avoidance, its origins as a protective mechanism, and the ways it perpetuates anxiety and physical tension. By avoiding negative emotions, we hinder our healing process and allow manipulative individuals to undermine our self-confidence and self-worth. The episode explores strategies to overcome avoidance, emphasizing self-awareness, self-compassion, and the importance of rebuilding social networks. Practical steps, such as journaling, setting boundaries, and gradually facing uncomfortable emotions, are highlighted to foster personal growth and emotional resilience.

81. The Reality of Gaslighting Gaslighting and Self-Perception: Insights from Anil Seth’s Theory of Consciousness
In this episode, we go further into the concept of gaslighting, building on the foundation laid in a previous episode. We look at how gaslighting manipulates your internal reality, and how it can cause long term effects, as explored through Anil Seth's theory of consciousness and controlled hallucinations. The question of ‘Who Am I’, is examined, because after being in a toxic relationship, your sense of self changes. You begin to loose confidence as your reality gets twisted and manipulated. The episode breaks down Seth’s ideas of identity and reality, conceptualized through his explanation of self-continuity, change blindness, and predictive processing. This concept applies to understanding how gaslighting influences our perception of ourselves and reality. Practical advice on recognizing and responding to gaslighting behavior is also provided, empowering you to trust your reality and protect your psychological well-being. When you can trust your reality, you can regain your sense of self, and therefore, your confidence.

76. Breaking the Generational Curse
Curse or Schema? Either way, in this episode I’m talking about overcoming inherited traumas.
What is a generational curse? And are you plagued with it? We look closley at the negative behavior patterns passed down through families. These patterns, often referred to as 'isms' such as alcoholism, gambling, abuse, and mental illness, can have severe impacts on various life aspects including health, relationships, and finances. Let’s look at generational curses through the lens of modern psychology. Are what we refer to as ‘curses’ really DNA-encoded or learned behavior patterns known as schemas?
This episode highlights the difficulties and immense effort required to break these curses or cycles, particularly for those in toxic environments. We look at the role that self-awareness plays in emotional resilience, and setting boundaries. The discussion also covers the specific schemas developed by family members of narcissists and also those of narcissists themselves. Ways of overcoming these deeply ingrained patterns are explored in our efforts to break the ‘generaltional curse’.
