10 Hard Truths for Strength and Conditioning Coaches

10 Hard Truths for Strength and Conditioning Coaches

In this episode of the Decoding Excellence Show, I'm discussing my recent article 10 Hard Truths for Coaching in the World of Athletics. This was an article I wrote off the backend of several conversations with young strength and conditioning interns. This show narrates the article while adding some author commentary.

As a reminder, our Random Shows shows are a quick 30 minute episode where I typically discuss current industry trends, research reads, current events, and occasionally offer my insights into the training process that we're undertaking each week. Mini-Episode: Updates from Colorful Colorado

In this episode of the Decoding Excellence Show, I'm discussing some of the new things we're doing around University of Colorado Boulder. We talk about some of the new technologies we're utilizing within our athletic department, some of the new pre-participation athlete benchmarking we're conducting, and a general run-down of our summer staff. It was a fun show where I break out the microphone and headphones and get rapping about what's on my mind. Science of Sport Vs. Artistry of Coaching

Science of Sport Vs. Artistry of Coaching

‌In this episode of the Decoding Excellence Show, I'm discussing the all too common debate between sport science and performance coaching. To be fair, it is a common debate I hear often between the pure academic sport scientists and strength and conditioning coaches "in the field". In this Random Episode, I dive into this debate between an evidence-led, sport science, data-driven decision model versus the applied nature of strength and conditioning or sport coaching. This was a fun episode to record because I get on a roll talking about this material.

As a reminder, our Random Shows shows are a quick 15-25 minute episode where I typically discuss current industry trends, research reads, current events, and occasionally offer my insights into the training process that we're undertaking each week. This episode ran longer because sport science and it's applied usage is an area I'm incredibly passionate about. i go into these random shows without notes but full of passion, insights, and opinions. I believe with conviction, you'll take away something interesting from this show and I hope it delivers you a little bit of value in your day.

Sport Science != Smoke and Mirrors: Using Data Within Coaching

‌In this episode of the Decoding Excellence Show, I'm discussing an issue I hear too often regarding sport science and it's applied nature within high performance sport. This was a fun episode to record because I get on a roll talking about this material.

Dan Howells - High Performance Coaching

Dan Howells - High Performance Coaching

In this episode of the Decoding Excellence Show, I'm speaking with Industry Veteran and High Performance Practitioner, Dan Howells. Dan has experience at US Ski & Snowboard, the English Institute of Sport (EIS), Rugby Union and Rugby 7s, and most recently, in the Major League Baseball (MLB) Houston Astros organization. You do not want to miss this show!

Dan recently formed Collaborate Sports during the initial lockdowns through COVID as a means of connecting developing coaches and practitioners through a personal development focus. Since then, he has reached over 400 hundred practitioners from varying countries using the personal development platform he has created. He provides opportunities to others through Bespoke Coaching/Mentoring, Monthly Interactive Webinars with guest presenters, and the Interactive Personal Development (IPD) Programme.

The IPD was the main focus of building a platform to network other coaches together in a learning environment and make mentorship more affordable for younger and developing coaches. The IPD allows 10-12 coaches to partake in a 6-month course, focusing on specific content dependent on the Technical or Non Technical nature of the programmes.

Live attendance means interaction is central to the programme where attendees can take the information shared and navigate how to apply it to their own world through the help of Dan and others in the programme. The costs are more affordable due to the group nature of the programme, and the online platform provided to allow coaches to communicate between monthly meet ups means that attendees get to coach and help each other daily as required.

Currently, the S&C Technical IPD is open for enrollment with spaces still available for the commencement on January 31st 2021. The programmes reach coaches on all time zones based on running 2 cohorts at any one time. If interested in learning more about the course, you can visit http://collaboratesports.com for more info, or email Dan direct at info@collaboratesports.com to ask questions or arrange an informal discussion about the opportunities Collaborate Sports aims to provide.

Dan can be found on twitter as @howellsdan and on Instagram with @collaborate_sports

Making Sense of Sleep Duration Monitoring

Making Sense of Sleep Duration Monitoring

In this episode of the Adam Ringler Show, I'm discussing a recent tweet of mine sharing a snippet of "Why We Sleep: Unlocking the Power of Sleep and Dreams" by Dr. Matthew Walker. Are we, sport scientists, actively monitoring sleep durations and qualities in our student-athletes to only measure it or should we actually derive meaningful and actionable information from the subjective recall? I believe the later but recognize that sleep is an unbelievably challenging element to actively control.

Who is the author of this book? Matthew Walker is a British scientist and professor of neuroscience and psychology at the University of California, Berkeley. His research focuses on the impact of sleep on human health and disease.

As a reminder, our shows are typically brief episodes where I discuss current industry trends, research reads, current events, and occasionally offer my insights into the strength and conditioning and sport-science services that we're undertaking each week. I believe with conviction, you'll take away something interesting from this show and I hope it delivers you a little bit of value in your day.

Volleyball Roundtable with RJ Abella and Eduardo Fiallos

Volleyball Roundtable with RJ Abella and Eduardo Fiallos

In this episode of the Decoding Excellence Show, I'm hosting a volleyball roundtable special featuring two of my good friends and fellow volleyball coaches, University of South Carolina's Beach Volleyball Assistant Coach RJ Abella and University of Colorado's Volleyball Technical Coordinator, Eduardo Fiallos.

RJ Abella enters his sixth season as assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for the Gamecocks, working with the program since its inception.  Abella came to Carolina in the spring of 2013 as assistant coach for both the indoor and sand volleyball programs and made the transition to full-time beach volleyball assistant in the spring of 2015. He was named to the American Volleyball Coaches Association's "30 Under 30" list in 2014, recognizing 30 rising coaching stars at all levels of volleyball who are under 30 years old.

Eduardo joined the Buffs after spending four seasons at the University of Denver. In 2016, he served as the director of operations and from 2013-16, he was a volunteer assistant coach. Eduardo, who coached three seasons at Denver, was part of three straight Summit League Championship teams and three consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances for the Pioneers. Eduardo has been a coach at the collegiate level since 1997, spending time at five different universities. Eduardo was at Arizona (1997), Cal State-Dominguez Hills (1997-98), Louisiana-Lafayette (1998-99), North Carolina State (2006) and Denver (2013-16).

I had a blast recording this show and I know you'll take away a few GREAT things from it!
