B-Side 001 - The Last of Us (HBO)

B-Side 001 - The Last of Us (HBO)

In Episode 023, we covered "The Last of Us" and what a phenomenal game/soundtrack that was. Between that episode and today, we received "The Last of Us" as a television show, and despite the Deep Bass Podcast being generally music focused, we HAD to cover this. Unfortunately, we couldn't get Cody on the show due to some scheduling conflicts, however, we found someone who is substantially better anyway... my wife! That's right, Amanda has joined me on this adventure, and coming from someone who doesn't particularly play video games, but loved the absolute heck out of "The Last of Us" (both the game and the show), she brought with her some fantastic insight.

Join us as we talk about the show as a whole, how it compares the game it was adapted from, and tidbits in between (with music present, of course)! If you're interested in talking to us more about the show, this episode, or anything else, feel free to head on over to our Discord: https://deepbasspodcast.com/ If you enjoyed this or any other episode, please don't forget to follow and review us -- only takes a few more minutes after the podcast is over, and helps us out tremendously.

B-Sides is a spin off set of episodes that fill in some game adjacent topics we want to cover that may not be specific to just video game music itself. It's our catch all for important topics in games without being completely restrictive. Welcome to the premier episode, and thank you, as always for listening!

Episode 026 - Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

Episode 026 - Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

Peter and Cody really cannot wrap their heads around it, but it has been one whole year since the Deep Bass Podcast recorded it's first episode, and what a journey it has been. What better way to celebrate than to cover a game with the largest soundtrack they could find? At over 1,000 songs, this was the biggest soundtrack they've listened to, and at over two hours and 15 minutes, the longest podcast they've ever recorded. Not too bad to cap off the first season!

In this episode, Peter and Cody talk about the last year, including some of the best and worst moments of the podcast. Then they dive into SSBU, talking about their history and (reluctantly) picking their five favorite songs. This was incredibly challenging, given that every track on the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate soundtrack is legitimately a gem! There are a few other hidden gems that make this their most content filled episode to date. You won't want to miss it!

Question of the Episode: If you had to pick five tracks from the SSBU soundtrack, what would they be? Tell us over on Twitter @DeepBassPodcast, or stop by the Discord and hang out: https://discord.deepbasspodcast.com/

Also, to celebrate this milestone, we've released shirts and hoodies! You can pick one up right here: https://merch.deepbasspodcast.com/

And as always, thanks for listening, and we'll see you next season!

Episode 025 - Hades

Episode 025 - Hades

Escaping the underworld can be hard. But at least if you're going to do it, you should have the composure and good looks of best boi Zagreus! In this week's episode, we talk about the music from yet another beloved title from the minds at Supergiant Games: Hades! Composed entirely by Darren Korb, we are presented with a soundtrack unlike any other in games that we've covered, and it does Hades much justice. Roguelikes are certainly not Cody's forte, but Peter tries his best to convince him that if he plays only one roguelike ever in his life, Hades should be that game. Does he succeed? Take a listen and find out!

Question of the Episode: Which Olympian gives you your favorite ability to use in Hades? Tweet us @DeepBassPodcast, or join the conversation over on Discord: https://discord.deepbasspodcast.com/

Buy the soundtrack on Bandcamp: https://supergiantgames.bandcamp.com/album/hades-original-soundtrack

Episode 024 - Pokémon Black and White Version 2

Episode 024 - Pokémon Black and White Version 2

Unova is in danger again and instead of Team Plasma it's... Neo Team Plasma? Ooookay then. Peter and Cody sit down to talk about Pokémon Black and White Version 2 which neither have played, and both are highly confused about it's existence. Their personal opinions aside, they dig into over 120 tracks to find their top five and talk about their history and experience with Pokémon, as well as Peter's completely healthy and normal obsession over Pokémon Go. Composed by Go Ichinose, Hitomi Sato, and Teruo Taniguchi, does the Pokémon Black and White Version 2 OST hold a candle to the flame of the past four generations? Take a listen and find out!

Question of the Episode: If you were introducing someone brand new to the franchise of Pokémon, which game would you start them off with? Answer this and previous episode questions on Twitter @DeepBassPodcast, or stop by the Discord and let's break that 240 character limit: https://discord.deepbasspodcast.com/

Episode 023 - The Last of Us

Episode 023 - The Last of Us

If your country was ravaged by an infection that destroyed most of the nation, turning major cities into barely livable encampments, and where the militia will kill you for stepping foot into areas without proper certification, how would you survive? In The Last of Us, Joel and Ellie survive on hope, their growing friendship, and really, really bad jokes. But they're totally worth listening to! The Last of Us was a major hit on the PS3, and saw a remaster on the PS4, but while you'll hear a lot about the story, gameplay, and graphics, one thing we don't hear much about is the music. Composed almost entirely by Gustavo Santaolalla, we are presented with an outstanding score that would knock most cinematic full length films out of the park. Outstanding from beginning to end, this is one episode you are not going to want to pass up on.

Question of the Episode: If you could take one video game or video game series and turn it into a movie/TV series, what would it be? Answer this by tweeting @DeepBassPodcast, or stop by our Discord and hang out: https://discord.deepbasspodcast.com/

Episode 022 - Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble

Episode 022 - Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble

Rounding out the beloved Donkey Kong Country trilogy, Peter and Cody sit down and talk about Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble, which brings with it a very new sound that compliments this game. This is to be expected though, when David Wise took a back seat to allow Eveline Fischer a chance to compose most of the tracks herself. But does this late SNES era game hold a candle to the monumental titles that were DKC and DKC2? You'll have to listen to find out what we thought!

Question of the Episode: In DKC3 (or any game, really) what were your favorite and worst stages you have ever played? Answer this and talk about the episode over on Twitter @DeepBassPodcast, or come hang out with us on Discord: https://discord.deepbasspodcast.com/

Episode 021 - Luigi's Mansion

Episode 021 - Luigi's Mansion

Okay so it may not be spooky season, but after our discussions about Luigi's Mansion, do you really need an excuse to play such a charming game? We think not! In this episode, we bring on James Fluker, a fellow streamer and co-host of the Elbow Rocket podcast as we talk about a game that Peter hasn't played before. After listening to the soundtrack, he regrets that decision immensely! Composed by Kazumi Totaka and Shinobu Tanaka, we are pleasantly surprised that this game doesn't take the typical approach to a "horror" game and finds a way to bring us funky, fresh, and all together fun tracks to listen to. Take a listen as we talk about our experiences (or lack thereof) of this game, and share with you our top five favorite tracks from the OST.

Question of the Episode: What game OST has caught you by surprise after you listened to it for the first time? Answer this and chat with us on Twitter @DeepBassPodcast, or join us on the Discord: https://discord.deepbasspodcast.com/

You can find more of James over on Twitter as well: https://twitter.com/Elb0wR0cket

Episode 020 - Harvest Moon 64

Episode 020 - Harvest Moon 64

Peter and Cody had a pretty crazy week during the last episode, so they decided to switch gears and slow things down with a game that is near and dear to both of them: Harvest Moon 64! Special guest Anna Marie Privitere joins them as she shares her vast knowledge of the series, as well as her top five favorite songs from this game. Composed by Tsuyoshi Tanaka, The HM64 soundtrack blends many different instrument sounds together to create a vibrant, on brand soundtrack fitting for a farming life simulation that isn't quite captured in any other style of game. From banjos, to tambourines, to flutes and accordions, there's a wide variety of tracks you will not want to miss on this episode.

Question of the Episode: What was the first Harvest Moon game that you started with? You can answer this and talk about Harvest Moon 64 with us by tweeting us @DeepBassPodcast, or dropping by the Discord server where we are always talking about games: https://discord.deepbasspodcast.com/

If you want to talk with Anna Marie more about Harvest Moon, or just games in general, you can find her over on RPGamer (https://rpgamer.com/) or you can say hello on Twitter @amprivitere.

Episode 019 - Red Faction: Guerrilla

Episode 019 - Red Faction: Guerrilla

In this episode, Peter invites a long time friend of his, Duran a.k.a. Intr3pid, onto the show to talk about a game that is near and dear to him: Red Faction: Guerrilla! Little did we know that we would be covering a game that both Cody and Peter have never played before! We are marching through new territory here, but it was fairly easy to do given that this soundtrack, composed by Timothy Michael Wynn, Jake Kaufman, George Oldziey, Dan Wentz, and Raison Varner, was absolutely stunning in so many ways. We also have a first here at the Deep Bass Podcast: 15 songs picked and not a single one overlaps another! Join us in another musical journey as Peter, Cody, and Duran talk about their history with Red Faction as a series, and share their top five favorite songs from the Red Faction: Guerrilla soundtrack!

Question of the Episode: If you have played this game before, would you recommend this to anyone who plays games, or just to fans of the Red Faction franchise? For those who haven't played, was this episode enough to get you interested in the series? Answer this and talk about the episode with us further on Twitter @DeepBassPodcast, or join us on the Discord server: https://discord.deepbasspodcast.com/

Episode 018 - Final Fantasy XIII

Episode 018 - Final Fantasy XIII

Being branded a l'Cie means being purged from your friends, families, and loved ones. But what happens when six adventurers band together, all branded as well, to try and put a stop to the purges and rescue those they have lost? Final Fantasy XIII is born! Composed by Masashi Hamauzu, FFXIII marks the first mainline Final Fantasy game to not feature the work and oversight of Nobuo Uematsu. But does Hamauzu have what it takes to fill the massive shoes that Uematsu has left? Join Peter and Cody as they welcome Corbin Rogers, a long time fan of the Final Fantasy franchise and superfan of the XIII trilogy, discussing the history of Final Fantasy XIII, their memories and first exposure with the game, and of course, the music that comes with it! You may have heard mixed feelings about Final Fantasy XIII across the web, but this episode is sure to confirm that this game stands tall among the rest.

Episode 017 - Undertale

Episode 017 - Undertale

Nyeh heh heh! An indie sensation among gamers everywhere, Peter and Cody decide that their podcast wouldn't be the same without covering the wonderful Undertale... except there's one problem: Cody has never actually played Undertale! For that, we knew we needed some help with this one, so we were happy when we were able to bring Bridgette a.k.a Brooklyn from the Block on this episode with us to try and convince Cody that he needs to play this game? Were we successful? You'll just have to listen to the episode to find out!

Undertale was developed almost solely by one person, Toby Fox, and what he was able to accomplish in this game musically is mind-blowing. Travel with us to the Underground as we explore our introduction to the game, talk about what makes this game so special, and dive into our top five songs from the official soundtrack! Warning: listening to this episode will fill you with determination!

Question of the Episode: Who was your favorite character from Undertale? Answer this and chat more about this game over on Twitter @DeepBassPodcast, or drop by our Discord server: https://discord.deepbasspodcast.com/

Episode 016 - Star Fox

Star Fox team! We are creating the first game for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in 3D and need good music. Good luck! Hajime Hirasawa composes an epic space odyssey soundtrack only fitting for the Star Fox games, but does every track hold a candle to the unique, first of its kind gameplay that Star Fox brings? Find out as you join Cody and I through one of our favorite childhood games of our past, discussing many of the elements that made this title a hit for us as kids.

From insane, spider legged bosses, to the Super FX chip,  to... tiddlywinks...? What? This episode covers the gamut, and then some! Enjoy our flight through deep space as we discuss our adventures through Star Fox!

Episode 015 - Celeste

Episode 015 - Celeste

What is more therapeutic than conquering inner demons like depression and anxiety? Doing so while climbing a massive mountain! In this episode, Peter and Cody share their thoughts about the beautifully composed Celeste, some of their personal experiences both with the game and their own battles with depression and anxiety, and what this game meant to them. After a tumultuous 2020, this was just the escape they both needed to ground themselves again. Lena Raine, the composer of Celeste, has crafted a masterpiece, and that is exemplified by the fact that we couldn't even trim these songs down without losing too much detail, so we left them mostly intact! Join us on our journey through Celeste as the first episode to ever reach two hours of listening time. Trust us, we are not kidding when we say that every second is worth it.

Episode 014 - Animal Crossing: New Horizons

Episode 014 - Animal Crossing: New Horizons

Welcome to Animal Crossing! Population: Growing! Peter and Cody sit down with special guest Carly Ritchie as they discuss their island life... both in real life and in Animal Crossing: New Horizons! Debuting in March at the start of the quarantine due to COVID-19, the three have found various ways to enjoy their time on their new islands, discovering ways to share moments with their friends despite practicing social distancing. With that, came a love for the soundtrack that featured a host of new hourly jams that they enjoyed while picking fruit, digging up fossils, and developing their island. Take a listen as they share memories of past games, as well as discussing their top songs from ACNH. With over 200 tracks composed by Yasuaki Iwata, Yumi Takahashi, Shinobu Nagata, Sayako Doi, and Masato Ohashi, they found it quite the challenge to narrow it down to just five songs each. We hope you enjoy the music and memories relived from Animal Crossing: New Horizons!

Question of the Week: Who is your favorite villager of all time? Tweet us @DeepBassPodcast, and don't forget to subscribe to us wherever you listen to your podcasts!

Our guest, Carly, can be found on Twitter, Instagram, and really anything with a handle by searching for @coyo_kaleido.

Thanks for listening, and from Peter and Cody at the Deep Bass Podcast, we hope you have a wonderful and safe holiday season!

For the first time ever, we introduce our first guest to the Deep Bass Podcast who chose this game for our episode: William Pattison (BeardedCorvus)! Just in time for the holidays, one of the biggest titles ever to hit consoles, and the video game world as a whole, we have arrived at The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time! Come along with Peter Thomas and Cody Haltom as we explore another Koji Kondo composition. Graced with beautiful music, we discuss this iconic game and several features that turned The Legend of Zelda series on its head in the best ways possible! Stay tuned through the episode to find out what our top five picks are, and, as always, enjoy the immersive tracks that brought Hyrule to a whole new dimension.

Question of the Episode: What was your favorite weapon or sub-weapon to use in Ocarina of Time?

You can find Will on Twitch and Twitter under his handle: @BeardedCorvus. As always, thank you so much for listening and we hope you enjoy the episode.

*Editor's Note:* During the episode, I mistakenly call the "Ben Drowned" videos "Ben Died" and reference it as an Ocarina of Time source, when in actuality, it was from Majora's Mask. Sorry about that!

Episode 012 - Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest

Episode 012 - Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest

Another title beautifully composed by David Wise, Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest is hands down the best in the series. If you enjoyed Episode 2, you're going to love this one because it is packed full of more amazing music. Peter and Cody try their hardest not to pick their favorite children, but how can you not have a favorite when there is one that is clearly the better of the three? As always, we discuss our history with DKC2, talk about our top five favorite tracks, and wrap up with some interesting tidbits we've discovered about the game. We hope you enjoy the episode!

**Editor's Note** I apologize about the intermittent word skips happening throughout the episode. Something didn't save quite right with the audio file, so a few words get cut off in a few sentences. Thank you for your understanding.

Episode 011 - Sonic the Hedgehog 2

Are you ready to go Sonic fast? Because we've sped up this episode to 2x the speed! Just kidding, but we are running very fast through the stages and music of Sonic the Hedgehog 2! Sega's mascot on the Genesis gets a facelift from his Sega Master System days on their new 16-bit system to be faster, more vibrant, and have plenty of attitude. Peter and Cody discuss what made the Sega Genesis so unique, and how that impacted the compositions created by Masato Nakamura as he utilized not one but two sound chips!

As promised in the episode, here's a breakdown of Green Hill Zone from Sonic the Hedgehog and how those two chips worked side by side: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r_JYEdwvemk

Question of the Episode: Which sound chip did you prefer more, the SNES or the Sega Genesis? Make sure you answer this and any of our previous questions on Twitter @DeepBassPodcast. It's that time of the year again where we bust out our spooky games and play them to get ourselves into the holiday... spirit. Peter and Cody have decided that their game of choice this year was going to be Resident Evil 4. Loved by fans of the series, and many who weren't, Resident Evil 4 was the first game in the franchise to introduce several new game mechanics that earned this beloved title so many awards and accolades: over the shoulder cameras, a fully manual aiming system, and a QTE event system that kept you on your toes! Join us as we explore the hauntingly beautiful soundtrack that accompanied this fantastic game, composed by Misao Senbongi.

Episode 009 - Fable

Episode 009 - Fable

Welcome to the world of Albion, where bandits roam the land and the hero is... out kicking chickens? Wait, did I read that correctly? Regardless of the hero's questionable life choices, Fable has inspired awe and wonder by building a massive world to explore that feels as though it is living and breathing the same as our own. But whether you are good or evil, choose the sword, the bow, or a bit of magic to fell your foes, Danny Elfman and Russell Shaw have composed one of the most magical and gorgeous soundtracks we have ever listened to. Peter and Cody dive right in and discuss some of their best (and worst) memories of Fable.

Question of the Episode: During your playthrough, did you specialize in Might, Skill, or Will? Make sure you stop by and tweet us @DeepBassPodcast and let us know!

One of the few movies turned games that was actually successful (if we're being honest, were there really any others?), we talk about everything ranging from late night sleepovers to the atrocious controller weight known as the Rumble Pak. Of course, we also discuss our top five favorite tracks from the minds of Graeme Norgate, Grant Kirkhope, and Robin Beanland. As always, thank you for listening!

Episode 006 - The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past

Episode 006 - The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past

It's 2020, and we may very well be in the Dark World together. Peter and Cody are back to talk about The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past! Arguably one of the best Zelda games of all time, ALttP was composed by the great Koji Kondo, and he really rolled up his sleeves to make some of the most iconic tracks that originated here, and made their way through to almost every game after. As always, we discuss a bit of the history of The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, our personal history with this excellent game, and dig into five of our favorite tracks, which includes one of the longest tracks I've included in any episode to date: a whopping three minutes and three seconds! We hope you enjoy coming along with us during this 16-bit classic.

As much as we enjoy our episodes, we share a brief moment to give our condolences to the family and friends of Chadwick Boseman. A legend by his own right, and a hero to us all, even without the mask, he will be sorely missed.

Question of the Episode: What game would you like to see us cover in future episodes? You can respond to us over on Twitter tagging @DeepBassPodcast. If you're enjoying the show, please do us a favor and subscribe, rate, and review! We'd love to hear your feedback.

Episode 005 - Persona 5

Editor's Note: For some reason, our audio recording program went a little funky on us, so I apologize for the less than ideal quality of the podcast. We are working hard to address it and give you the best sounding podcast we can provide. Thank you for your understanding!
Don your mask, Phantom Thieves, we're about to steal your heart! Peter and Cody are here to talk about the catchy music of Persona 5 and we're willing to bet that you'll be bobbing your head or tapping your foot to at least one of these tracks. Shoji Meguro shines once again as an outstanding composer that blends various genres together to give you one of the best soundtracks Peter has ever laid ears on. Cody, however, isn't all that impressed! Find out why and more, and let us know what you think!
Question of the Episode: Who is your favorite persona to use in Persona 5? If you can't name just one, then tell us your favorite Major Arcana!

Episode 004 - Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2

Episode 004 - Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2

Have you ever tied up a pair of Vans, grabbed your skateboard, and hit a sick Kickflip McTwist off a half-pipe into a 10-second grind on a hand rail? Peter and Cody have! Well, kind of. In this episode, we discuss two classic titles that inspired kids all across the world to try their hand at being their own sk8ter boi: Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2! With a remake on the horizon, we felt it necessary to cover what might have been one of the most fun arcade skating experiences that has ever graced consoles across the world. Neversoft and Activision brought skateboarding to us in a whole new way, and with it, introduced us to some of the best (and worst) music we've ever had the pleasure (and pain) of listening to. We also ask you, the listeners, some very important questions! Be sure to respond over on Twitter!

Forewarning: the music contained in this episode contains lyrics, some that may not be appropriate for kids to listen to. Listener discretion is advised!

Episode 003 - Stardew Valley

Taking the world by storm, Stardew Valley was an indie sensational hit that has seen millions of copies sold all across the globe. Easy to see why, when it is so dang addicting! Peter and Cody talk about their addiction and recovery as they share their memories and favorite music of ConcernedApe's beloved title. The game itself is incredible, but does the music hold up to being the timeless classic stuff we'll be singing years after its time has passed? Join us on our journey as we explore and find out!
