Searching for Solid Evidence of UAPs - Dr. Massimo Teodorani, Galileo Project
Dr. Massimo Teodorani is an astrophysicist, musician, and UAP skeptic. He has recently signed onto Avi Loeb's Galileo project, where he is in charge of an effort to take high-resolution images of UAP's from around the world. Using pan-tilt camers with precision spectroscopic tools, Teodorani and colleagues are hoping to create an incontrovertible dataset that gets us closer to understanding what people are seeing in the skies in places like Marfa, Phoenix, and Hessdalen. In addition to the science, we talk mind control, statecraft, covert military action, and electronic music.  Support the scientific revolution by joining our Patreon: https://bit.ly/3lcAasB  As always, let us know what you think in the comments! Fundamental Motions of the Universe - David de Hilster, Dissident Science
David de Hilster is the creator of the Dissident Science YT channel and president of the John Chappell Natural Philosophy Society, and he's got a bone to pick with fundamental physics. Fields as the foundational organizing principle don't make any sense. In his view "push" is the only force that makes sense and is produced by four fundamental motions. Consciousness Physics - Dr. Bernardo Kastrup, Essentia Foundation
Bernardo Kastrup has a PhD in philosophy and another in computer science, and is interested in a theory of consciousness that by necessity emerges from quantum physics. Which, in short, suggests that reality isn't real. What we interact with is just a dashboard,  a simulacrum of what's actually going on. We try to understand limits of what matters, try on alternative interpretations for quantum spookiness, and try to make sense of why the world looks and acts the way that it does.    Steer the scientific revolution by joining our Patreon: https://bit.ly/3lcAasB   Or by getting one of Bernardo Kastrup's books: Decoding Jung's Metaphysics: https://amzn.to/3HmaWUBWhy Materialism is Baloney: https://amzn.to/3kA1bJC Decoding Schopenhauer's Metaphysics: https://amzn.to/3WmHe6c The Idea of the World: https://amzn.to/3XMsLBD More than Allegory: https://amzn.to/3WqUE16 Dreamed Up Reality: https://amzn.to/3WsjxcAScience Ideated: https://amzn.to/3kwGXAu Meaning in Absurdity: https://amzn.to/3ZMex5D Rationalist Spirituality: https://amzn.to/3GQHlB2 Brief Peeks Beyond: https://amzn.to/3HnCOYDPandeism: https://amzn.to/3knBXOk Strange Dimensions: https://amzn.to/3QT9z2U  #physics #consciousness #psychology                         Check our short-films channel, @DemystifySci:  https://www.youtube.com/c/DemystifyingScience   AND our material science investigations of atomics,  @MaterialAtomics  https://www.youtube.com/@MaterialAtomics Join our mailing list https://bit.ly/3v3kz2S      PODCAST INFO:  Anastasia completed her PhD studying bioelectricity at Columbia University. Authority, Violent AI, & Myth of Self - Dr. Thomas Metzinger, J. Gutenberg University of Mainz
Dr. Thomas Metzinger is a renowned philosopher and professor of theoretical philosophy at the Johannes Gutenberg University of Mainz. He also serves as a member of the European Commission’s High-Level Expert Group on Artificial Intelligence. Our eye-opening conversation with Dr. Metzinger explored a range of favorite topics all centered on the question: what does it mean to be a human in the post-modern landscape of for-profit healthscare, algorithmic decision-making, and endless war. We also discuss how the brightest future might result from the tiniest changes at the level of the individual, despite the self's inevitable recession into the increasingly totalitarian, yet inevitably unstable, global industrial-state machinery.   Support the scientific revolution with a monthly donation: https://bit.ly/3lcAasB    Or pick up Dr. Metzinger's book:  https://amzn.to/3H5HBO5 As always, let us know what you think in the comments!    #self #consciousness #selfcare                          Check our short-films channel, @DemystifySci:  https://www.youtube.com/c/DemystifyingScience   AND our material science investigations of atomics,  @MaterialAtomics  https://www.youtube.com/@MaterialAtomics Join our mailing list https://bit.ly/3v3kz2S      PODCAST INFO:  Anastasia completed her PhD studying bioelectricity at Columbia University. Death, Drugs, & Corruption at the FDA - Dr. Mikkael Sekeres, University of Miami
What happens when the FDA approves a drug that doesn't work? Say it gets accelerated approval from the regulatory body, but further clinical trials demonstrate a lack of efficacy. Normally, the agency requests that the company take their drug off the market, the company does so, and so the wheel turns. But when post-approval clinical trials showed that Genentech's blockbuster breast cancer drug Avastin was killing women, the company broke with more than a century of tradition, and declined to take their drug off the market. We talk with Miami University's Mikkael Sekeres about his experience sitting on the jury for the trial that denied Genentech's right to keep selling Avastin to breast cancer patients, regulatory capture, care for the dying, gamesmanship at the FDA and much, much more. Climate or Corruption? - Spencer Roberts, The Intercept
Climate or Corruption? - Spencer Roberts, The Intercept
What happens when corrupt incentive structures and incorrect ecological assumptions crash into each other? A billion crabs vanish, and everyone blames it on the nebulous effects of a changing climate. Everyone, that is, except for Spencer Roberts - freelance journalist with bylines at the Intercept, Jacobin, Nautlius, and The New Republic. Roberts started looking into the hyperbolic headlines and discovered a predictable mess of corrupt incentive structures, questionable ecological practices, and a bottomless appetite for exploiting ever-deeper, colder waters. Consciousness First Universe - Dr. Jude Currivan, Cosmological Archeologist
Consciousness First Universe - Dr. Jude Currivan, Cosmological Archeologist
Could the universe be shaped by consciousness, rather than the other way around? Most researchers working under the classical paradigm would say no - awareness is something that emerges from space time. But a new generation of cognitive neuroscientists, philosophers, and physicists has rebelled against the stalemate at the heart of consciousness research by asserting that clearly, obviously, inexorably... awareness must come first. This conversation with Dr. Jude Currivan, cosmological archaeologist with  Masters in Physics from Oxford university, is our second attempt to understand how the physical world can spring from an abstraction. We talk about the mythmaking powers of science, the nature of reality, the holographic principle, and how it is not enough to consider things themselves - any robust theory of reality that attempts to understand awareness itself must explore the network itself. Ancestors of the Americas - Dr. David Carballo, Archeologist, Boston University
Dr. David Carballo is back for another round with DemystifySci, this time all about the timeline of the peopling of the Americas. We talk about the timeline for human habitation of the Americas, where those people might have come from, and how it was that they came to organize themselves into villages, cities, and eventually empires. Is it possible to view the future before it happens? A buttoned-up academy scientist would probably say no, but Julia Mossbridge, founding executive director of the Institute for Love and Time, would say yes. She comes from a line of scientists who have been willing to dive into the very edges of what can be studied with empirical science, and has come back from the front with stories to tell. Is life inevitable? Or are we the unbelievable result of an against-all-odds game that has produced a pair of eyeballs capable of unravelling the mysteries of the universe? Nick Lane, Biochemist at the University College London, is torn. On the one hand, life seems like it has no choice but to occur. The biochemistry of metabolism is completely spontaneous, even in the absence of cells. But complexity? That's a whole different ballgame. We talk about why life on Earth is so strange, why a metabolic theory for life is so good, why Panspermia is so unsatisfying, and how some lab results imply our understanding of metabolism isn't as good as we think.    Support the scientific revolution with a monthly donation: https://bit.ly/3lcAasB   Or buy Nick Lane's books:  Transformer - https://amzn.to/3W8mDTIThe Vital Question - https://amzn.to/3V71Oqr Power, Sex, Suicide - https://amzn.to/3WtBJ5U Life Ascending - https://amzn.to/3FAuW3G #evolution #origins #physics                      Check our short-films channel, @DemystifySci:  https://www.youtube.com/c/DemystifyingScience   AND our material science investigations of atomics,  @MaterialAtomics   THE MATERIAL WORLD https://www.youtube.com/@MaterialAtomics Join our mailing list https://bit.ly/3v3kz2S      PODCAST INFO:  Anastasia completed her PhD studying bioelectricity at Columbia University. Cycles Theory of Everything - Ray Tomes, Cycles Research Institute
Cycles Theory of Everything - Ray Tomes, Cycles Research Institute
At the very bottom of all our attempts to explain nature there is a single question. Why is there anything at all? What are the forces that take an entire universe of undifferentiated matter and give it form? According to Ray Tomes of the Cycles Research Institute, the universe we occupy is shaped by the resonant pressure of cycles. The whole universe rings like a bell, with a fundamental frequency ringed by harmonic structures of decreasing intensity. In this model, the fundamental corresponds to the starting bell of the universe (big bang/big bounce/take your pick) and everything else - from galaxies to atoms - is the result of material being organized by the resultant harmonics. We get into the theory, explore implications for real life, and try to get some investment advice.    Support the scientific revolution with a monthly donation: https://bit.ly/3lcAasB    As always, let us know what you think in the comments!   Closing Remarks  #vibration #resonance #physics                      Check our short-films channel, @DemystifySci:  https://www.youtube.com/c/DemystifyingScience    AND our material science investigations of atomics,  @MaterialAtomics   THE MATERIAL WORLD https://www.youtube.com/@MaterialAtomics Join our mailing list https://bit.ly/3v3kz2S      PODCAST INFO:  Anastasia completed her PhD studying bioelectricity at Columbia University. Resonant Structures of the Mind - Dr. Joseph Arpaia & Dr. Lobsang Rapgay
Fundamentally, this is a conversation about applied consciousness. We talk about the way that the "self" emerges from the resonant "structures" of the mind. These antennae decide the way that external stimuli are processed and integrated into experience, and so serve as the roots from which conscious experience springs. We talk about what happens when the antennae are tuned to a destructive resonance, the meditation industrial complex, the radical act of changing your mind, and much, much more. Cosmic Rays, Electric Weather, & Stellar Anomalies - Dr. Nir Shaviv, Astrophysicist
These days, spring comes at strange times, winter barely arrives, and summer seems like it will never end. Conventional wisdom points to a single molecular cause - the rising tide of CO2 from increasing human activity. But that's an incomplete story, says Astrophysicist Nir Shaviv. It treats the Earth like it floats unmolested through the black night of the universe. But the full story is bigger, and weirder, and much more cosmic. Dr. Karl Friston is the most widely-cited neuroscientist in the world, known for his development of parametric mapping, a method for comparing brain scans between different patients that basically enabled the whole field of functional neuroscience. To follow up his insights into the human brain, Dr. Friston has turned his mathematical mind to other questions of life and consciousness, such as the distinction between living and not-living, the simplest division imaginable between things, and the great challenge of encoding emotional states. New Light in an Old Universe - Dr. Brian Keating, Cosmologist, UCSD
Science is the source of modern myths, and cosmology - the study of the cosmos and our place in them - is the foundation on which the house of science is built. But we know that these myths, about the location of the Earth in the universe, about the verdant surface of Mars, about the firmament above a flat earth studded with glowing orbs, about the formation of the solar system - all these myths can suddenly change. We sit down with Brian Keating to discuss the nature of mythmaking in science, the golden calf of prizes, the ego, the will to power, and the search for the fingerprints of inflation.    Support the scientific revolution with a monthly donation: https://bit.ly/3lcAasB    Or support both us and Dr. Keating by buying his books:  Losing the Nobel Prize: https://amzn.to/3TPWpDF Into the Impossible: https://amzn.to/3XkZFtx   As always, let us know what you think in the comments!     #physics #cosmology #experiment                        Check our short-films channel, @DemystifySci:  https://www.youtube.com/c/DemystifyingScience  Join our mailing list https://bit.ly/3v3kz2S      PODCAST INFO:  Anastasia completed her PhD studying bioelectricity at Columbia University. AIRWAVES #4 - Mastering Mainstream Cosmology - Dr. Ethan Siegel, Starts with a Bang!
DemystifySci is a show of opposites, and in the court of Science it is vital that we present both sides of any debate. To balance our tendency to favor arguments that undermine consensus, we have a conversation with Dr. Ethan Siegel, blogger, professor, podcaster, and high priest of the big bang and inflation cosmology. This is a primer of the foundations of thought in mainstream physics, and so constitutes mandatory listening for those interested in finding a new way forward because, despite the ways in which we disagree, Siegel is right about one thing. Threshold Model of Light - Eric Reiter, Experimental Physicist
Threshold Model of Light - Eric Reiter, Experimental Physicist
Photons don't exist, and the experimental results that got Clauser and Aspect a Nobel prize are a result of an incorrect interpretation of the data. So says experimental Physicist Eric Reiter, who has reproduced the famous experiments that show violations of Bell’s inequality and come out the other side with a much less spooky interpretation of quantum weirdness. According to Reiter’s Threshold Model, atoms are resonant structures that can absorb different amounts of energy based on their unknown baseline state, and entanglement is simply a misunderstanding of what is happening on the atomic level. AIRWAVES#3 Unified Growth Theory - Dr. Oded Galor, Brown University Economics
AIRWAVES#3 Unified Growth Theory - Dr. Oded Galor, Brown University Economics
Most economic theories are what one would call "bounded," which is to say that they are based on a narrow window of human activity, be that time, or place, or category. This limitation produces ideas with middling real-world efficacy, as they cannot be widely applied to, say, the whole of humankind. But, what if an economic theory of everything, a decoder ring for why the condition of our species is the way it is, was possible? What would it look like? How could one idea help us understand the arc of human development all the way from stagnation, to growth, to inequality? Unified Growth Theory, laid out by Oded Galor in his new book, The Journey of Humanity, attempts to answer all of those questions. By studying the arc of human development from the earliest settlements of the fertile crescent to modern day socioeconomics, Galor purports to have solved the mystery of development. What we do with this knowledge, though, is still up to us. Civilizations in Collapse: Lost City of Teotihuacan - Dr. David Carballo, Archeologist
Living at the end of an era, what are the historical lessons can we learn from civilizations in collapse? We speak with David Carballo, Boston University archaeologist and anthropologist about the lost city of Teotihuacan which, at the start of the Common Era, was one of the largest cities in the world, boasting a population of more than 100,000 inhabitants from all corners of Mesoamerica. But all things end, and the capital city of the Teotihuacanos was no exception. Climate change, the collapse of social trust, and rising inequality meant that a few centuries later the builders of the city were buried by history. Studying what remains of the art and artifacts can shed some light on changes we can make in our own time stave off crisis.      Support the scientific revolution with a monthly donation: https://bit.ly/3lcAasB   AND by picking up one of Dr. Carballo's books:  Collision of Worlds: https://amzn.to/3U8BsF3 Obsidian Reflections: https://amzn.to/3Ug08eU Check our short-films channel, @DemystifySci:  https://www.youtube.com/c/DemystifyingScience   Join our mailing list https://bit.ly/3v3kz2S      PODCAST INFO:  Anastasia completed her PhD studying bioelectricity at Columbia University. AIRWAVES#2 How the Left Brain Kidnapped Civilization - Dr. Iain McGilchrist
AIRWAVES#2 How the Left Brain Kidnapped Civilization - Dr. Iain McGilchrist
Why are you the way that you are? Why do you hurry, or focus on the technical details, or let your mind drive up anxiety and worry? Do you know? Or, do you, like most people, simply take for granted that your internal state is inevitable and largely unchangeable? That you're just a happenstance combination of genetics, upbringing, scarring social moments, and the civilizational frame you've been brought up in? Neuroscientist, philosopher, psychiatrist, and author Iain McGilchrist (The Matter with Things, The Master and His Emissary) proposes that the essence of your *you*-ness isn't an external phenomenon, and isn't even encoded in your genetics. It's a byproduct of the way your brain is organized, where the left hemisphere - that cataloguing and exacting nag - has effectively taken over not just your cognition, and our cognition, but that of the entire species. Left hemisphere dominance is the reason that capitalism is so corrosive, why our jobs suck and our lives lack meaning, why the singing of birds and the sighing of the wind have lost their luster. It is the key to understanding ourselves, our society, our civilization... and maybe, even, our future. PS A small note: we had some gnarly issues with lag in this recording, and so the conversation is a little stilted in parts. However, we thought it still warranted sharing, and hope you'll forgive us for the issues and will let us know what you thought of the ideas anyhow.  Support the scientific revolution with a monthly donation: https://bit.ly/3lcAasB AND by picking up Dr. McGilchrist's books: https://amzn.to/3UnDIrv https://amzn.to/3h9GNxh   #psychology #polarization #neuroscience                      Check our short-films channel, @DemystifySci:  https://www.youtube.com/c/DemystifyingScience   Join our mailing list https://bit.ly/3v3kz2S     PODCAST INFO:  Anastasia completed her PhD studying bioelectricity at Columbia University. How Bell's Theorem got the Photon Wrong - Dr. Carver Mead, Caltech Physicist
How Bell's Theorem got the Photon Wrong - Dr. Carver Mead, Caltech Physicist
What if we're wrong about entanglement? This is the question that's been driving Carver Mead, Caltech Physicist and veteran of the semiconductor industry, and at this point, he's pretty sure that Bell's Theorem is wrong. This is a bold claim! After all, Clauser, Aspect and Zeilinger just won Nobel, the biggest prize in the world, for their work on painstaking experiments that seem to prove the spooky paradox - some information can travel faster than light! Not so fast, says Carver Mead. There's no problem with the experimental design, or the observation that the photons are "entangled." The problem lies upstream of the experiment, at the threshhold of understanding. What is a photon? What are the atoms doing when they're generating the signal that's being measured, and how does a physical understanding of the wave function change the spookiness of quantum mechanics?     Support the scientific revolution with a monthly donation: https://bit.ly/3lcAasB AND by picking up Dr. Mead's book: https://amzn.to/3sJPoJi As always, let us know what you think in the comments!   #physics #quantum #atomic                      Check our short-films channel, @DemystifySci:  https://www.youtube.com/c/DemystifyingScience   Join our mailing list https://bit.ly/3v3kz2S      PODCAST INFO:  Anastasia completed her PhD studying bioelectricity at Columbia University. Creating Aliens in a Lab - Dr. Lee Cronin, University of Glasglow
Creating Aliens in a Lab - Dr. Lee Cronin, University of Glasglow
Professor Lee Cronin is an organic chemist, but he isn't just interested in the usual research path of describing new chemicals, though he does do that - he's interested in understanding the fundamental principles of chemistry, and how they can be used for the search for life on other planets... and for the creation of life, de novo, on our own.    And that's tricky, because the origin of life is one of those contentious theories where the truth of what happened here on Earth will never be fully known. Instead, people like Lee Cronin are going to have to build devices in the laboratory that allow them to create organisms capable of undergoing generational selection... but even then, will we have truly answered the question of what happened way back when?   Likely not, but as the conversation with Professor Cronin shows, we'll at least have a stellar definition of life from the process that can be used consistently to search the cosmos.     Support the scientific revolution with a monthly donation: https://bit.ly/3lcAasB L #origins #aliens #chemistry                      Check our short-films channel, @DemystifySci:  https://www.youtube.com/c/DemystifyingScience   Join our mailing list https://bit.ly/3v3kz2S      PODCAST INFO:  Anastasia completed her PhD studying microbial communication at Columbia University. Intragalactic Geology - Dr. Chris Kirkland, Geologist, Curtin University
Intragalactic Geology - Dr. Chris Kirkland, Geologist, Curtin University
Is Earth's crustal formation influenced by its position in the galaxy? And how would we know? It's obvious there are many celestial cycles, from the earthly ones that Milankovitch described to the orbit of the solar system through the galaxy, but how can we tie those to geological planetary cycles, like the 800 m.y. resonance of the core, the 500-300 m.y. supercontinent cycle, and the ~ 30 m.y. impact cycle?  Professor Chris Kirkland and team from Australia's Curtin University have developed a zircon-based approach that they say can tease apart the cyclic secrets of crust formation. We talk radiometric dating, limits and benefits of the technique, asymptotic time horizons, and the difficulties of doing geology on a galactic scale.    Support the scientific revolution with a monthly donation: https://bit.ly/3lcAasB  #geology #astronomy #physics                     Check our short-films channel, @DemystifySci:  https://www.youtube.com/c/DemystifyingScience   Join our mailing list https://bit.ly/3v3kz2S      PODCAST INFO:  Anastasia completed her PhD studying microbial communication at Columbia University. Underworld Economy & Wall Street Create Tent Cities - Sam Quinones, The Least of Us
Underworld Economy & Wall Street Create Tent Cities - Sam Quinones, The Least of Us
Untold numbers of people across North America have been caught up in the wake of the opioid crisis - loved ones lost, lives interrupted, cities overrun with addicts. This tableau has unfolded in countless cities, against the faraway backdrop of an underworld drug empire that terrorizes the people of Mexico. Author Sam Quinones has spent the last decade of his life on both sides of the border, reporting from the front lines. He's traced the origin of the crisis, detailed the toll it took on the government of Mexico, the people living there, and how unlimited quantities magic pain pills erased an entire generation, with no regard for social or class lines. What makes this conversation unique is that, despite the darkness he's seen, Quinones has finally found a glimmer of hope among the wreckage. We talk destruction, absolution, and rebirth. We talk of the drug wars, of the way that wall street colluded to make the crisis, and how we all played a role. But more than that, we talk about the way that we can pull ourselves out of this mess, by taking a lesson from the cities where the crisis really started.    Support the scientific revolution with a monthly donation: https://bit.ly/3lcAasB Support both Sam and DemystifySci when you buy his books:    The Least of Us: https://amzn.to/3RFQC2s Dreamland: https://amzn.to/3fTLBpC True Tales from Another Mexico: https://amzn.to/3ejVTz1 L  #warondrugs #drugs #homeless                    Check our short-films channel, @DemystifySci:  https://www.youtube.com/c/DemystifyingScience  Join our mailing list https://bit.ly/3v3kz2S      PODCAST INFO:  Anastasia completed her PhD studying microbial communication at Columbia University. Seeing the Most Distant Galaxies - Dr. Steven Finkelstein, Astronomer, U.T. Austin
Astronomer, Dr. Steven Finkelstein, joins us for the third week of astro/cosmo discussions centered around the new James Webb (JWST) data. Dr. Finkelstein captured some of the first images of our most distant known galaxies. In this episode we discuss how the data is compiled and processed and how small changes in these pipelines can alter distance estimates by orders of magnitude. We also discuss tired light and the usual explorations of paradigm shifts in science. Modified Physics v. No Big Bang - Dr. John Moffat, Theoretical Physicist
This is the second installment of three episodes this month in the astro/cosmo department at DemystifySci. This is John Moffat, Cambridge cosmologist and out-of-the-box mathematical physicist. Dr. Moffat is working on various modified gravity regimes to make sense of the latest James Webb data, which suggests Galaxies were fully formed just a couple hundred million years after the Bang. We discuss the possibility that we are witnessing modern renditions of the classical Ptolemaic epicycles as mathematicians scramble to patch up the standard models.   Support the scientific revolution with a monthly donation: https://bit.ly/3lcAasB #cosmology #jameswebbspacetelescope #physics                   Check our short-films channel, @DemystifySci:  https://www.youtube.com/c/DemystifyingScience   Join our mailing list https://bit.ly/3v3kz2S      PODCAST INFO:  Anastasia completed her PhD studying microbial communication at Columbia University. Many Roads to New Planets - Dr. Konstantin Batygin, Caltech Planetary Institute
A rockin' conversation with Professor Batygin about his perspectives on modern cosmology, how paradigms shift, and what the field looks like at the very horizon. We want to know - what are the roads to forming new planets? What about stars? What about heavy elements? This is another piece of the "why is this happening" puzzle, where we attempt to understand how and why certain ideas in science appear unchallengeable, in service of slowly helping the paradigm shift.   A HUGE thanks to all our new patrons this month, and for everyone that's been with us since the very beginning. Lost Electric Tech of the Ancients - Cliff Dunning, Earth Ancients Radio
Why are there electric anomalies at so many ancient structures? Why do structures built outside the classical periods of complex civilizations fail to display the same anomalies? Why do seeds taken to the top of a Mayan pyramid germinate faster than those left behind in the hotel room? Why are so many ancient buildings built with telluric currents and ley lines in mind? These are just some of the questions that Cliff Dunning of Earth Ancients Radio helps us deal with in our attempt to understand a simple question: are modern humans really the first technologically advanced civilization to grace the face of the Earth?    Support Cliff and the Podcast by buying his latest book: https://amzn.to/3RCapRd Support the scientific revolution with a monthly donation: https://bit.ly/3lcAasB  #ancienthistory #electricuniverse #archeology                  Check our short-films channel, @DemystifySci:  https://www.youtube.com/c/DemystifyingScience   Join our mailing list https://bit.ly/3v3kz2S      PODCAST INFO:  Anastasia completed her PhD studying microbial communication at Columbia University. The Shocking Origins of Epidemiology - Dr. Jim Downs, Gettysburg College
The Shocking Origins of Epidemiology - Dr. Jim Downs, Gettysburg College
We take for granted today that public health systems around the world have the capacity to trace the progression of outbreaks, to determine how cancer clusters are linked to environmental effects, how dirty water causes outbreaks of transmissible illnesses... but where did all this knowledge come from? Contrary to popular belief, it wasn't from John Snow's identifying the origin of the Cholera epidemic as the pump on Broad Street. No, John Snow was using techniques that were passed to him fully formed. The real source of epidemiological tools lies in the brutal and bloody arc of the trans-Atlantic slave trade, a finding that shocked Gettysburg College history professor Jim Downs when he found it buried in the dusty archives from which his research is sourced. Did True Polar Wander Cause the Ice Ages? - Lance Weaver, Utah Geology
Support the scientific revolution with a monthly donation: https://bit.ly/3lcAasB We've all heard the popular theories explaining the clockwork cycle of glaciations that generally boil down to a series of overlapping eccentricities in the Earths' solar exposure. These Milankovitch cycles still don't entirely satisfy our need to explain the bistability of the system: what causes the Earth to regularly jump from glacial to interglacial over the course of a few tens to hundreds of years? Lance Weaver from Utah State Geology suggests the hypothesis that a true polar wander would neatly fill in the blanks, whereby some variety of mass imbalance would cause a true pole shift event that snapped the axis of the Earth between two stable barycenters. It would certainly explain why the periodic glaciers seem to be centered directly over Greenland instead of the North Pole. #poleshift #geology #iceage    Check our short-films channel, @DemystifySci:  https://www.youtube.com/c/DemystifyingScience  Join our mailing list https://bit.ly/3v3kz2S      PODCAST INFO:  Anastasia completed her PhD studying microbial communication at Columbia University. An Electrical Path to Grand Unification - Wallace Thornhill, Electric Universe
Wal Thornhill, the Chief Advisor for the Thunderbolts Project, has spent his life working on an electrical solution to the problem of grand unification. What is the place from which his ideas spring? We start with how the work of Immanuel Velikovsky inspired him as a young man, get him to sketch out the foundational concepts for how everything can be described through the lens of electricity, and talk about resistance in the sciences to truly radical ideas. Mathematical Proof for Consciousness - Dr. Donald Hoffman, Cognitive Neuroscientist UC Irvine
Mathematical Proof for Consciousness - Dr. Donald Hoffman, Cognitive Neuroscientist UC Irvine
What does the emergence of consciousnesses have to do with the fact that spacetime is doomed? Well, even after decades of experimentation, no one had managed to boot up consciousness from inanimate objects. Donald Hoffman, professor of cognitive neuroscience at UC Irvine, thinks this is because the very premise upon which most consciousness research is based, that the material world comes first and consciousness emerges from it later, is flawed. Instead, he takes a mathematical approach inspired by the work of people like Nima Arkhani-Hamed to show that consciousness had to come first. That is, awareness does not emerge from the material world. Instead, it comes from beyond the world we know. #consciousness #conscious #neuroscience         Support the scientific revolution with a monthly donation: https://bit.ly/3lcAasB  Or by buying one of the books we mentioned: Order Donald Hoffman's Books The Case Against Reality (2020): https://amzn.to/3IpRhCd Visual Intelligence: How We Create What We See (2000): https://amzn.to/3ItfabN Observer Mechanics: A Formal Theory of Perception (2014): https://amzn.to/3Pglbe9Donald Check our short-films channel, @DemystifySci:  https://www.youtube.com/c/DemystifyingScience   Join our mailing list https://bit.ly/3v3kz2S      PODCAST INFO:   Anastasia completed her PhD studying microbial communication at Columbia University. Element Transmutation, Electric Sun, and Biophotons - Dr. Michael Clarage, Safire Project
Dr. Michael Clarage is a founding member of the SAFIRE project who has recently turned his attention to the nascent field of biophotonics, which has him wondering - are we underestimating the effects of electromagnetic radiation on the human body? Is it possible to assemble a DNA sequence with nothing but sound? Is there such a thing as a morphogenic field? This week, Dr. Clarage takes us on a walk through the very edges of science to see if we can figure out what will change about the models that we hold so dear today, gives us an update on the Safire project, and sheds some light on the cosmic horizon. Electric Harmonics of Consciousness - Andrés Gómez Emilsson, Qualia Research Institute
Electric Harmonics of Consciousness - Andrés Gómez Emilsson, Qualia Research Institute
What is the dividing line between the feeling of sitting in a fluorescently lit cubicle vs flying down the Gold Coast, sea foam in your hair and music in your ears? Obviously almost everything, but where is the root of the subjective emotional experience, the qualia, come from? Andrés Gómez Emilsson, director of research at the Qualia Research Institute, suggests that it lives in the harmonic patterns of the brain. Enjoyable experiences can be understood as consonant resonances, negative ones as dissonant, disorganized ones. He and his colleagues are working on a mathematical model of experience - both the mundane and the transcendent, as they are informed in their work by the hyperbolic geometry of DMT and other psychedelic substances. The goal, at the end of the day, is to create a functional map of human experience so complete that it can help eliminate unnecessary suffering.    Support the scientific revolution: https://bit.ly/3lcAasB #consciousness #consciousplanet #neuroscience Check our short-films channel, @DemystifySci:  https://www.youtube.com/c/DemystifyingScience   Join our mailing list https://bit.ly/3v3kz2S      PODCAST INFO:  Anastasia completed her PhD studying microbial communication at Columbia University. The Crumbling Line Between Planets and Stars - Dr. Gibor Basri, Astrophysicist U.C. Berkeley
UC Berkeley professor Gibor Basri studies brown dwarves - cool objects that are not quite planets, not quite stars. But before we could get to the strange phenomena of these deuterium and lithium fusers, we had to cover some basics. How do you tell the difference between a planet and a star? Is it thier formation, their location, or something else entirely? The answer is fuzzier than you would expect - and requires us to take a trip into the dark, cool reaches of our galaxy, where stars and planets alike are being formed in the safety of the nebular nurseries hidden in the dark arms of our pinwheel Milky Way. There we discover that star formation, often spoken of as an exclusively gravitational process, is midwifed by chemistry, electricity, and magnetism. Come explore what happens in the dark, cold reaches of space, and how the darkness gives rise to light.    #astronomy #astrophysics #paradigmshift Support the scientific revolution: https://bit.ly/3lcAasB Paper mentioned by Christopoulos: 111 years of magic are enough: let us return to science now https://www.researchgate.net/publication/309576615_111_years_of_Magic_are_enough_Let_us_return_to_Science_now Check our short-films channel, @DemystifySci:  https://www.youtube.com/c/DemystifyingScience  Join our mailing list https://bit.ly/3v3kz2S    PODCAST INFO:  Anastasia completed her PhD studying microbial communication at Columbia University. Layout of Ancient Cities Evidence of a Wandering North Pole? - Mario Buildreps, Antiquity Reborn
Layout of Ancient Cities Evidence of a Wandering North Pole? - Mario Buildreps, Antiquity Reborn
What do ice ages, geology, crust shifts and super ancient civilizations have to do with each other? Well, when taken together, they tell the story of much, much longer timeline of technologically advanced humans. Our episode this week is with engineer and archeological researcher Mario Buildreps, who after years of research into the architecture of ancient cities, found something very strange. No matter where he looked, the northern face of ancient buildings was pointed towards Greenland. As he looked deeper and deeper into his dataset of great circle orientations, he realized something even weirder - the intersections of these structures clustered into five nodes. By correlating his findings with data from the Vostok ice sheet, the age of the ocean floor, and the layout of tectonic boundaries, he stumbled on an extraordinary theory. Not only were these structures much older than we realized - maybe ten times as old - but they told a completely new story of the geologic history of the Earth. #ancientcivilizations #poleshift #paradigmshift Send a donation to the scientific revolution: https://bit.ly/3lcAasB Check out Mario Buildreps' work: https://www.mariobuildreps.com/ Check out Mario Buildreps' YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/c/MarioBuildreps/ Check our short-films channel, @DemystifySci: https://youtu.be/1OCL5Lq8m6s Join our mailing list https://bit.ly/3v3kz2S PODCAST INFO: Anastasia completed her PhD studying microbial communication at Columbia University. Impossibly Old Artifacts - Michael Cremo, Forbidden Archaeology
How do you explain a gold chain pulled from a 300 million year old lump of coal, a perfectly crafted brass bell pulled from a mine in the Appalachians, delicately inscribed stone obelisks found deep in gold mines, hammers embedded in impossibly ancient rock? Archaeology can't... which is why most researchers disregard these findings in order to maintain a 300,000-year-old timeline for modern humans. NASA Scientist Reveals Planets Are Powerful Beings - Dr. David Grinspoon, Astrobiologist
We normally think of planets as inanimate balls of nickel and silicon, animated by the molten rumbling of the inner core. How does our world change when someone like NASA’s David Grinspoon reveals that planets are actually powerful beings? It requires zooming out from our own experience, lived in the narrow corridors of the human scale. It requires us to think on the galactic scale, to entertain ideas of living beings that operate in ways we can barely imagine. But imagine we do! We talk about the ways in which the wild creatures Earth live and breathe as a single organism, the role of humans in this interconnected world, and how Earth - and maybe all planets - come to be powerful, intelligent beings. This conversation is based on work that Grinspoon did with Dr. Sarah Walker and Dr. Adam Frank on Planetary Intelligence, check out their paper here: https://www.cambridge.org/core/journals/international-journal-of-astrobiology/article/intelligence-as-a-planetary-scale-process/5077C784D7FAC55F96072F7A7772C5E5 Support us by becoming a patron of the sciences: https://bit.ly/3lcAasB   And when you buy David's book, Earth in Human Hands: https://amzn.to/3NoAcJS Follow David on Twitter: https://twitter.com/DrFunkySpoon And by checking out David's work ªº¬˚∆≤≥≤≥ https://ssed.gsfc.nasa.gov/davinci/ ≤≥≤≥∆˚¬ºª ªº¬˚∆≤≥≤≥ https://funkyscience.net/ ≤≥≤≥∆˚¬ºª   #PlanetaryIntelligence #Gaia #NASA   Check our short-films channel, @DemystifySci:  https://youtu.be/1OCL5Lq8m6s ªº¬˚∆≤≥   ≤≥ Join the mailing list https://bit.ly/3v3kz2S ≤≥≤≥∆˚¬ºª    PODCAST INFO:  Anastasia completed her PhD studying microbial communication at Columbia University. The Crisis of Mass Formation Psychosis - Dr. Mattias Desmet, Ghent University
There are three steps to mass formation psychosis, and signs point to the fact that we are living through the very last stage. In this week's conversation, Ghent University's Dr. Mattias Desmet, lays out his psychological theory of how entire societies go insane and fall prey to totalitarianism. What are the conditions that bind people into collectives rather than communities? What causes a woman to hang her own child? Decompressing Earth vs. Plate Tectonics - Dr. Marvin Herndon, Geochemist
Decompressing Earth vs. Plate Tectonics - Dr. Marvin Herndon, Geochemist
What if plate tectonics isn't settled science? Consensus suggests  Earth's crust has been going through relatively constant supercontinent cycles for as long as there has been a solid crust. There are all kinds of measurements and experiments that seem to confirm this observation - but there are whose who insist that the ancient history of the Earth is not what it seems. Rather than being formed as a molten ball of naked space goo, condensed from the sun's protoplanetary disk, it's possible that the Earth formed hot and gassy - like Jupiter, or the sizzling gas giants that Kepler is regularly finding in close solar orbits.    If that's possible - and our recent conversation with NASA's Don Pettit suggests there is a solid line of evidence here - how does that change our understanding of the Earth? Enter Dr. J. Marvin Herndon, who proposes the history of our planet is a history of decompression. In this episode of the DemystifySci podcast, he takes us through his theory and, along the way, explains everything from the composition of the inner core, to the generation of the magnetic field, to the reason that the surface of the Earth looks the way it does.    Support the podcast by becoming a Patron @DemystifySci ªº¬˚∆≤≥≤≥ https://www.patreon.com/demystifysci ≤≥≤≥∆˚¬ºª Support the podcast by building your library with Dr. Herndon's book Paradigm Shifts:  ªº¬˚∆≤≥≤≥ https://amzn.to/3NXOHFR ≤≥≤≥∆˚¬ºª   #ExpandingEarth #MarvinHerndon #ParadigmShifts Check our short-films channel, @DemystifySci:  https://youtu.be/1OCL5Lq8m6s ªº¬˚∆≤≥≤≥ Join the mailing list https://bit.ly/3v3kz2S ≤≥≤≥∆˚¬ºª   PODCAST INFO:  Anastasia completed her PhD studying microbial communication at Columbia University. First Hand Food - Tamar Haspel, The Washington Post
First Hand Food - Tamar Haspel, The Washington Post
Supply chain collapse and food shortages are on everyone's mind these days. Is the answer to homestead, to prep, to drop out? Most likely not - it's nearly impossible to grow enough food in a small garden to sustain a family. But don't let the garden grow over quite yet - there's more to growing and getting your own food than survival.  Tamar Haspel moved from NYC to the woods and was surprised to find that growing, gathering, and hunting brought her a lot more than food. We discuss how bringing our lives closer to the foods isn't about opting out - it's about community, integration, and growth. More details in her new book, To Boldly Grow. A Universe Beyond Time - Dr. Julian Barbour, Theoretical Physicist
Julian Barbour's latest book, The Janus Point: A New Theory of Time takes us on a wild hallucinatory ride through the story of everything ever, all at once. Such are the questions of mathematical cosmologists, who look toward the perfection of numbers in search of an origin story for this thing we call existence... Thinning Atmosphere Explains Flying Dinos - Dr. Donald Pettit, NASA Astronaut
Thinning Atmosphere Explains Flying Dinos - Dr. Donald Pettit, NASA Astronaut
Astronaut Donald Pettit champions a theory he developed while studying under Octave Levenspiel at Oregon State University. In short, it is apparent that large winged dinosaurs could not fly under today's atmospheric conditions. Pettit suggests that the solution to dino-flight is that the Earth's atmosphere was much thicker in the past, lending buoyancy to the giant animals while maintaining today's ratios of elemental composition. If this trend is extended long before the dinosaurs we end up with a hypothetical atmosphere as thick as Venus or even more. The theory then raises the question: what events caused the atmosphere to disappear?   Support the podcast by becoming a Patron @DemystifySci  ªº¬˚∆≤≥≤≥ https://www.patreon.com/demystifysci ≤≥≤≥∆˚¬ºª   #ThickAtmosphereTheory #Pterosaurs #NASA Levenspiel Thick Atmosphere Theory:  http://levenspiel.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/DinosaurW.pdf Esker Thick Atmosphere Theory:  https://www.dinosaurtheory.com/big_dinosaur.html Check our short-films channel, @DemystifyingScience:  https://youtu.be/1OCL5Lq8m6s ªº¬˚∆≤≥≤≥ Join the mailing list https://bit.ly/3v3kz2S ≤≥≤≥∆˚¬ºª   PODCAST INFO:  Anastasia completed her PhD studying microbial communication at Columbia University. Natural Selection Isn’t the Whole Story - Dr. Richard Watson, University of Southampton
Natural Selection Isn’t the Whole Story - Dr. Richard Watson, University of Southampton
Is competition really all there is? If you take the word of those who insist that natural selection is solely responsible for all of life on earth, then yes. The story goes that competition drives fitness, that maximizing fitness ensures survival, and that survival ensures your traits become fixed in the population. But that's not the whole story. On the other side of the competitive evolutionary coin, there is natural induction, a cooperative process that balances the competitive aspects of natural selection.  On this week's episode, Dr. Richard Watson uses the language of machine learning and artificial intelligence to make a compelling about how our understanding of evolution has misunderstood a key point: The success of individuals and groups depends on cooperation as much as it does on competition.  Support the podcast by becoming a Patron @DemystifySci  ªº¬˚∆≤≥≤≥ https://www.patreon.com/demystifysci ≤≥≤≥∆˚¬ºª   #Evolution #Intelligence #Induction  Dr. Richard Watson: https://www.richardawatson.com/  Check our short-films @DemystifyingScience:  https://youtu.be/1OCL5Lq8m6s  ªº¬˚∆≤≥≤≥ Join the mailing list https://bit.ly/3v3kz2S ≤≥≤≥∆˚¬ºª   PODCAST INFO:   Anastasia completed her PhD studying microbial communication at Columbia University.
