The Ocean Cleanup: Navigating the Waters of Environmental Innovation with Creative Florent Beauverd

Welcome to another episode of the Design Atlas Podcast! In this edition, we dive deep into the innovative realm of environmental conservation with a special focus on the groundbreaking work of Florent Beauverd. At 39 years old, Florent transitioned from his role as an environmental scientist to become the Director of Creative and Documentary Productions at the renowned Ocean Cleanup organization.

Founded in 2013 by Boyan Slat, the Ocean Cleanup is a nonprofit on a mission to combat the global crisis of plastic pollution in our oceans. Through the strategic deployment of advanced cleanup systems, including floating barriers that harness natural ocean currents, the organization aims to concentrate and capture plastic debris. By doing so, they hope to significantly diminish the presence of plastic waste in our oceans and mitigate the severe environmental consequences.

Join us as we explore the Ocean Cleanup's ambitious approach, innovative technologies, and the global impact of their efforts in the ongoing battle against marine plastic pollution. Florent Beauverd shares insights into the organization's initiatives, shedding light on the importance of creative and documentary productions in advocating for a cleaner and healthier planet. Stay tuned for an enlightening conversation that delves into the intersection of environmental science and creative solutions on this episode of the Design Atlas Podcast.

Saskia Coulson & Colin Tennant: Two Photographers Capturing Nature in Antarctica

Saskia Coulson & Colin Tennant: Two Photographers Capturing Nature in Antarctica

Photography is all about capturing the moment. From events, to landscape to scenery, wildlife and more, a photographer's goal is to always tell a story through still and moving images.

This is our 10th and final episode of season 2 on Design Atlas, and to celebrate, we’re going to take you somewhere extremely cold - and I mean really cold - and that location my friends is Antarctica. Meeting up with two professional photographers, we’ll be exploring what it’s really like to go on an expedition to one of the most sparsely populated regions of the world. Well, maybe not if you’re a penguin, but you won’t find many other humans down there. Antarctica, being the fifth largest continent of the world, is almost entirely covered in ice. In fact, only about 0.4% of the rocks have ever been exposed and studied due to the massive ice sheets covering the region.

Given the distance and remoteness, Antarctica is an untouched natural paradise for photographers. In today’s episode we’ll meet with award-winning photographers Saskia Coulson and Colin Tennant. Residing in Scotland, they’ve been to Antarctica 12 times, and each time they go they’re there for at least one third of the year. We’ll learn about the equipment they use, the precautions they need to take, and challenges they face to capture the most captivating imagery, always keeping in mind the story they are trying to tell.

Caitlyn Hoffmann: Why You Should Join AIGA

Have you ever wondered how to meet like-minded designers? Have you heard of AIGA? In this episode, we meet Caitlyn Hoffmann, a graphic designer from Appleton, Wisconsin. She has earned her design degree from the University of Wisconsin-Stout in 2018 and loves building identity systems to help small businesses reach their true potential.

Caitlyn also loves listening to podcasts and is an avid listener to Design Atlas, which is why we are so grateful to her for taking the time to speak with us. Both Megan and Jens are great friends with Caitlyn, as they all studied at the University of Wisconsin-Stout together.

Caitlyn has also been an avid AIGA leader. AIGA is the internationally known American Institute of Graphic Arts. She participated as president of the local University of Wisconsin-Stout chapter where she organised design events from speakers to design-focused field trips. In this episode, we’ll hear Caitlyn’s story and learn where she gathers her creative inspiration, and how AIGA has positively shaped her life as a designer.

Johanna Wegerich: Studying Design in Germany and England

Travel with us to Germany and England with Johanna Wegerich. Johanna is a graphic designer based in Frankfurt, Germany. We got to know each other during our time studying abroad at the Hochschule Darmstadt in Germany, and we are so extremely happy today to have her here on the show.   She currently works as the art director for Frittenlove, a hip restaurant and company in the Frankfurt area. She also manages her own freelance studio titled ‘The sun will come out.’ She is a print and editorial enthusiast and recently published her book ‘Können wir nicht zu viel besser‘ (We can't do too much better) which was listed on the Longlist Förderpreis für junge Buchgestaltung Stiftung Buchkunst in 2017.
