EP.21 Rebeca Lane: El Orden y el Caos [ESP]

ESP

Our guest in this conversation is Rebeca Lane (Rebeca Eunice Vargas Tamayac), a rapper devoted to feminist activism within hip-hop culture. Rebeca also uses the tools of hip-hop facilitating workshops where she shares her musical knowledge for popular and personal communication, as a way to make visible and confront what we want to fight for and transform. During the conversation, she takes us on a journey that makes a critical look at the generation of knowledge from the academy, which historically has had a tendency to be extractivist and detached from people's everyday realities. In contrast, Rebeca illustrates with her own practice within hip-hop, how she has been able to approach social reality by linking her personal history with broader social narratives. At the end of the journey, we talk about chaos as an emergent form of organization and how order is a human effort to control the uncontrollable, which is why it is obsolete.

In this episode, Pablo Montaño, a political scientist and climate activist, talks with us about the importance of being able to create new narratives as one of the responses to promote the necessary changes, as well as the demand for those, to counteract the current climate crisis. Since nothing escapes climate change, Pablo stressed the importance of communicating the current climate crisis and all the issues associated with it. He told us how when communicating the current challenges (water, food, energy, etc.), he does so with an optimistic outlook, highlighting the interconnection of the local and global scale, the active existing struggles to defend the territories and, above all, by presenting the people who they resist them and the visions of futures desired on their part. He finally calls us designers to, as part of our work, contribute to the materialization of these visions for desirable futures in an inspiring, attractive and convincing manner.

During the 3rd North American PhD by Design symposium, hosted online between the 5th and 10th of April, 2021, the Design in Transition team  hosted a Conversation with different doctoral and master's students from across the globe. The discussion took interesting turns as we discussed  different approaches on how to define design, bridging the academy and industry, how to develop practice-based research and how to do so in  environments or places that do nor align with the Anglo-European design classroom. How can a PhD in Design shape the way we practice design and the way industry approaches design? Is our academic research actually  having an impact in "the real world"?

Along the southern border of the US and Europe, a long and racist history are perpetuating inhumane violence. Author and Professor from University of Hawaii, Reece Jones, shares some of the history of the United States progression of exclusiomary imigration policies -  equipping our listners with historical contexts and foder for interventions towards systems level change. Iason Apotoloupolos a Alfred Landecker Democracy Fellow and rescuer with Mediterannea recounts the atrocities facing migrants coming from Libya to Europe and the inhumane policies enacted by the EU. He leaves us with the proposition that the threat to any state is not refugees but the mindset that believes they are a threat - how we treat refugees is a measure of our humanity. What this all means for design is for our listners to reflect.

EP.13 Terry Irwin and Gideon Kossoff: Transition Design Today [ENG]

ENG: To kick off season 2 of the Design in Transition podcast, we had a conversation with Terry Irwin and Gideon Kossoff, director and associate director, respectively, of the Transition Design Institute. Terry and Gideon along with Cameron Tonkinwise developed the building blocks of the initial Transition Design framework and integrated it into the CMU School of Design programs and curricula in 2014, including the Transition Design PhD program.

This conversation was a round table with several of this podcast collaborators for this season: Silvana Juri, Marysol Ortega Pallanez, Erica Dorn, Sofía Bosch Gómez and Alex Polzin. In this round table we touched on topics such as how we conceive Transition Design today; in what ways it has evolved since its inception, including a look at the research, contexts and approaches of each of us as PhD researchers in the Transition Design program at Carnegie Mellon University. We also talked about those aspects that we see must be part of a transition designer. Finally, we asked Terry and Gideon what new ideas they are pursuing right now.

Bonus Episode [ENG]: Sound experiments à la exquisite corpse: sensing/thinking the pluriverse and making worlds

Second year MDes Candidates and First year PhD Researchers from Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) created audios in an exquisite corpse fashion (a technique used by surrealists painters where they would draw on a sheet of paper, fold it to conceal part of the drawing, and then pass it to the next painter to build on the previous contribution).

These audios are a reflective and exploratory exercise in the intersection of the Pluriverse and Design based on the texts of Marisol de la Cadena and Mario Blaser introduction of the book "A World of Many Worlds" where each team member recorded a 1 min reflection about what it means for them or what are the implications of designing in and for the pluriverse.

This work was done during the seminar in Design Theory and Practice / Advanced Interaction and Service Design Concepts, Fall 2020 in CMU taught by Marysol Ortega Pallanez and Dr. Dan Lockton.

Audio production by June Seo (Thomas) Youn. Marysol Ortega, Alex Polzin, and Nandini Nair crafted the English commentary.
