26 - Pushing Boundaries with Phoebe and Roxy from PANDR

I think you guys are going to be very excited about our guests today! This is our first interview ever with multiple guests! Today we are hearing from Phoebe and Roxy from PANDR! They create custom art installations and murals around the globe and one thing we really appreciate about them is that they are on a mission to end the starving artist stereotype. They have a plethora of resources for designers on their website and tons of helpful and fun content on their Instagram and TikTok as well. I'll link those in the show notes so have fun hopping into those rabbit holes! In this interview we talk about PANDR's origin story and how they got their start, red flags to watch out for when vetting potential clients, outreach and how important it is in landing clients, and some fun projects they have coming up! Phoebe and Roxy are fun and gracious and so generous in supporting the art community, you're going to love them!

Tag us and share your thoughts on social media if you're listening and resonate with anything we or a guest have shared lately—we LOVE seeing and connecting with you guys!

24 - UX Design 101 with Eva Chau

24 - UX Design 101 with Eva Chau

Big announcement today!! I have been working in collaboration with my lawyer Kiersty Loughmiller who I absolutely love, to bring you a custom graphic design contract template!! This template is thorough, drafted by my lawyer, used by me, peer reviewed... I literally used this template twice today for two different clients on two completely different projects and I was able to tweak it and take things out I didn't need, leave things in I needed and I felt super great about it. Yes, hiring your own lawyer is the best option, but sometimes that's just not financially possible. So this contract template is meant to be an affordable option that's a step up from scouring the internet and panic googling "what should I have in my design contract". In celebration of the launch of this contract template, I'm going to be having a huuuuge flash sale today only! If you head to designbeatpodcast.com/contract and enter in the code FLASHSALE at checkout, you're going to get the template for $25!! At that price you might as well buy now, use it later, or even just buy it to compare to your existing contract to see if there's anything you might want to add! Again that's designbeatpodcast.com/contract code: FLASHSALE and that's valid today only! Wednesday September 22, 2021.

Today we're talking with UX designer Eva Chau! Eva actually studied oil painting in college and graduated with a graphic design degree. She did some print design working on paper products, fell into web design and now she's working as a UX designer in software. Eva is our first UX designer on the podcast so she gives us a little intro into UX, what she does on a day to day basis and the challenges she faces on the job.

23 - The Joy of Starting with Jess Levitz

23 - The Joy of Starting with Jess Levitz

Today we're talking with Jess Levitz the other half of Shoppe Theory! So you guys remember Do-Hee, she was our very first interview ever on the podcast. Do-Hee is the web design partner of Shoppe Theory and Jess does more of the graphic design side so we're really excited to have her on and hear her perspective. You may know her from  The Creative Lady Collective Facebook group/ Instagram/ website formerly known as Freelance Wisdom. In this interview we talk about not being afraid to put your work out there, the perks of having a studio with a small team versus being a creative director managing a lot of people. She also  takes us on a deep dive into her branding process which you know I loved! So I do need to apologize for my audio in this episode.... I don't always point it out when my audio is bad because I feel like people wouldn't notice it a lot of the time if I didn't but this time.... it's pretty bad. I was at my parent's house and I wasn't as prepared as I thought so I had to use my AirPods which FYI are pretty much the worst thing you can record your audio on... so there you go if you find yourself wondering why I sound like I'm speaking through a Wendy's Drive-Thru speaker and Jess sounds really great that's why! So sorry guys... I'm not an audio engineer, I'm just a girl trying to share the stories of some pretty rad ladies. Ok! Here's Jess.

22 - How to Get Clients and Gain Confidence with Hayley Barry from Type Affiliated

22 - How to Get Clients and Gain Confidence with Hayley Barry from Type Affiliated

You guys... Hayley is absolutely incredible. She has been hand lettering professionally since she was in high school and has pretty much been hustling non-stop ever since. She's worked with a lot of amazing clients, if you live in Utah (specifically Provo) you've definitely seen her artwork in a store window,  a mural, a logo or even on a billboard. And you've most likely pointed it out and talked about how cool it was!

Something that we didn't discuss in the episode is that Hayley has been battling cancer on and off since she was 14 and right now she is in the hospital getting a bone marrow transplant. This involves Hayley being in the hospital for about a month, and the reason I'm sharing this with you is to ask for prayers. Hayley needs our prayers right now. Hayley is such an amazing, incredible strong person. Even before knowing the details of her cancer story I could just feel there was something special about her and Steph and I actually said to each other after this interview "Can you imagine if everyone had Hayley's confidence? And a world full of Hayley's??" What an amazing world that would be. I just feel truly blessed we were able to spend this time talking with her and learning from her. We love you Hayley!!!

14 - The Ins and Outs of Surface Pattern Design with Lauren Lesley

14 - The Ins and Outs of Surface Pattern Design with Lauren Lesley

Today we're talking to a fellow Lauren who is ALSO a surface pattern designer! Lauren Lesley is an independent artist and licensed textile designer. If you are at all interested in getting into the surface pattern design world this episode is going to be a reeeally amazing resource for you. And for those of you wondering what surface pattern design is, it's basically the artwork that goes on surfaces that are mass-manufactured. So think patterns that go on blankets, clothing, curtains, pillows.... remember we talked to Michelle Parascandolo who had designed a pattern for shoelaces...pretty much anything you can put a repeatable pattern on. So Lauren goes into detail about what it's like working in the industry, her opinions on getting a college degree in this field, pros and cons of working with an agent vs. presenting at trade shows. Lauren has had years and years of experience in the textile and surface pattern design industry, she's had a rug she designed sold in Target, and she doesn't hold anything back in this episode or in her courses she teaches. Your gonna love it!

13 - Learning to be Salesy with Shelley Easter from Launch Party

Today we are talking with Shelley Easter from Launch Party! Launch party is a strategy and design studio for product based businesses. She offers custom websites and two day intensives where you'll get a website in two days!!! Which kind of blows my mind. I met Shelley during Morgan Rapp's Design Biz Mastery program and I've always just been so inspired by the way she runs her business. It was really fun catching up with her and getting into the nitty gritty of her business!

12 - Practicing Design Daily with Olivia Herrick

12 - Practicing Design Daily with Olivia Herrick

Can you believe we convinced Olivia Herrick to come on our podcast? If you're a graphic designer you probably already know who Olivia is, but if you don't Olivia is a graphic designer based in the Twin Cities of Minnesota, best known for her playful, vibrant, and positive artwork. Though you will often find her glued to her computer at her studio, Olivia finds her greatest inspiration in the great outdoors. We had suuuch a good conversation with Olivia, she is SO well spoken! I always take notes when I'm editing to keep track of points I want to mention in the intro and I had such a long list after editing this episode! We talked about her goal to run the most stress-free studio that she possibly can, the importance of having a daily design practice to get the juices flowing, giving yourself permission to do what feels right for you as opposed to what people on Instagram are telling you you should be doing, being open-minded to change in your business, knowing when to hire help, and at the end she even encourages us not to follow her on Instagram(more on that later)! - Although sorry Olivia I am going to send them to your Instagram because it is a gold mine of inspiration! Obviously this episode is jam-packed with goodness, you're going to love it!

11 - Trusting Yourself to Be Yourself with Holly Robinson

This week we’re sharing our energetic discussion with local designer Holly Robinson, you might know her on Instagram as @whittonandwhite. She’s a self-taught creative with no intention of becoming a graphic designer currently working as an environmental graphic designer for Deseret Book and designing fun products for her own shop. She’s a big lover of pop culture and media and you can usually find her on Instagram sharing her current crushes of the week and her hot takes on tv shows and movies.

If you’ve ever wanted to sell your products in a maker’s market, this is a great episode to listen to because we go in depth about how to start and what the steps are to entering and selling at a market. We also talk about how trusting yourself to be yourself is the best way to create authenticity, both in art and business and in growing a community of people who are there for YOU, among all the other things we get to chatting about.

7 - Amy Stellhorn pt. 2: Lessons Learned from a Female Founder

If you're just tuning in, this is the second half of our interview with Amy. Part 1 is called "Once Upon a Time in Silicon Valley". Amy is the Founder & CEO of Big Monocle, an award-winning creative agency that was recently named International Small Agency of the Year by the DMA Echo Awards. Big Monocle works with Fortune 500 brands and startups on branding, marketing and brand experiences. The logo they did for the Women’s March has created an identity for a global movement in support of women everywhere. She's also the Co-founder of the Sego Awards™, and the YEC Women Entrepreneurs Chair! This interview was actually the first time we had spoken since she babysat me about 20 years ago! At the beginning you'll hear me showing Amy a photo of us I found in a scrapbook! My parents ran into her on a flight a few years ago while I was studying design, so I starting following her and was so happy when she agreed to chat with us! She is such a great storyteller and just one of those people who is warm and  instantly makes you feel like you're best friends. I decided to split this interview into part one and part two. So in today's episode we get to hear all about how Amy got started, her amazing life working as a graphic designer in Silicon Valley and then next week we'll hear about founding her agency, Big Monocle and the ups and downs that come with running an agency, and also all the different causes Amy is a part of in supporting women. Don't forget to subscribe so you don't miss it, and you know we always love those reviews!!
