Sustainability, Curiosity, and Entrepreneurship with Luca Pandolfi, Founder of Eterna Green Energy

Sustainability, Curiosity, and Entrepreneurship with Luca Pandolfi, Founder of Eterna Green Energy

In this episode, I talk to Luca Pandolfi, Founder of Eterna Green Energy. He's a clean tech entrepreneur. He's also creating a transition to sustainability by working with forests, biofuels, and local economic development.

Luca shares how Eterna Green Energy originated when he was in college while studying environmental science. In his studies, he noticed, from a business perspective, "that a bunch of businesses that had linear supply chains were not recapturing their finished product in any way and just either turning it into trash or releasing it in the atmosphere." Then he realized that if there’s a way to create an efficient cyclical system, it would be more profitable and environmentally sustainable.

Luca then ended up doing a year of personal research with one of the professors to answer some questions specifically around the fossil fuel industry and whether they could create a cyclical system for creating transportation fuels.

He also relates that the reason why he focused on fossil fuels was because it was “egregiously destroying the environment”. He wanted to create a more efficient, environmentally-friendly process. He details the process and the history of how, with the help of his engineer friend, they were able to create a renewable gasoline.

Listen to the full episode to learn more about this journey, and the many challenges that Luca Pandolfi encountered in his pursuit of doing his part to help save the environment, and also provide jobs to other people.

Flexible Living, Impact, and Passive Income with Cam Woodsum

Flexible Living, Impact, and Passive Income with Cam Woodsum

Was there ever a point in your life when a traumatic experience changed the trajectory of things and made you focus on creating impact and changing the world? This episode is for you.

I talk to Cam Woodsum, a social impact founder, a serial founder, and venture creator who has created eight startups through his studio Nomad Impact Ventures, from beaches all around the world. He shares about making money online, passive income, going abroad to live cheaply and getting hooked on the wandering life in Bali and the island life in Barbados.

Further, he talks about how his depression in high school, and feeling invisible, made him hunger for something more in life, despite going to college, and working on startups like Doordash. He also emphasized his awareness that life is short, and what we do in this lifetime matters. In Cam’s words, he states, “I do think acting with urgency is one of the most important things in my life where just thinking about how short life is.”

Cam also reveals how he made money online by selling Allbirds shoes on eBay, the rise and fall of his Instagram venture when the algorithm changed, and how he was able to have sustainable income in content writing.

Financing Regenerative Agriculture with Robyn O'Brien

Financing Regenerative Agriculture with Robyn O'Brien

I talk to Robyn O’Brien, a serial food founder, speaker, systems thinker, and an insightful builder of a more regenerative and just food system and we discuss systemic change, the importance of farming and farmers being at the front and center of development and financial security, and the impact of food to the health of the next generation.

She also shares that the food in the 21st century is making people sick and so she has advocated for real food and has become a Real Food evangelist.

Robyn also delves into the problem that farmers face, which she happened to share in her TEDx Talk in 2011. She talks about farmers “taking out an increasingly high level of debt, to finance the purchase of genetically-engineered seeds and finance the purchase of the chemicals required to grow them.”

Further, she focuses on the multinational companies who have the power to coordinate with farmers and create sustainable plans and develop practices that benefit the farmers, the multinational companies, and the consumers.

Designing Regenerative Solutions with Communities FT Bill Reed

Designing Regenerative Solutions with Communities FT Bill Reed

In this episode, I sit down with Bill Reed, a regenerative rebel, an accomplished architect, and a visionary in the community transformation area. He’s led and assisted on regenerative design projects over the last decade.

We talk about taking risks, how he has changed the attitude of communities in Bill’s past projects, regeneration and reconstructing our relationship with the world, the benefits of his projects to communities, and connection between self-transformation and the so-called controlled cultivation of a community group.

In addition, we discuss movements that people can connect to, place as a unit of design, working on our places in order to save the world, climate change, and feeding the world in our backyards. We also touch on potential, our most important role in the planet, and what one can do in one’s communities to be an illumination for the people around.

This episode is replete with ideologies and suggestions on how we can help change and save the world in our own little way—even by starting with self-love first.

Bill is an internationally recognized planning consultant, design process facilitator, lecturer, teacher, and author in sustainability and regeneration. He is a principal of Regenesis, Inc. – a regenerative design, living systems integrator, and education organization. His work centers on creating the framework for and managing an integrative, whole and living system design process. This work is known as Regenerative Development.

33. Finding cloud nine happiness FT Jordan Gross, happiness coach, 3x founder, 2x book writer, and entrepreneur

In this Episode, I chat with Jordan Gross about how to integrate a cloud nine moment into your day.

Jordan is a Northwestern and Kellogg School of Management graduate, a writer, a leadership coach, a speaker, and a self-proclaimed multipotentialite, having experienced positions in large banks like Merrill Lynch to small startup companies like Chowbus.

He's also a best-selling author of a book called Getting COMFY: Your Morning Guide to Daily Happiness, a TEDx Speaker, and founder of multiple companies and organizations.

We discussed ways to create a morning routing that kicks happiness into high gear through calming, openness, movement, funny, and YOU. We discuss taking control of your life and how to understand if something is just passion or your true life purpose. This episode was an incredible window inside the mind of an individual who's life's purpose it is to cultivate happiness within himself and everyone who he comes across.

We also discuss external motivations vs internal motivations. External motivations are ones that are shaped by forces around you, and internal motivations are ones that are cultivated through you chasing your purpose. Jordan and I talk about how to structure your life around internal motivations in order to facilitate greater happiness and life satisfaction. Internal motivations relate to the things you can actually control, and how you can use your unique skills to improve your happiness and life prospects.

31. Deep dive into cognitive bias

31. Deep dive into cognitive bias

Bias.

As human beings, we all experience this phenomenon. If we didn't have these biases, or mental shortcuts, to process the incredible amount of information that we intake through our senses, we'd be overwhelmed with sensation and information and unable to make any decisions.

However, these mental shortcuts can have many negative effects when proliferated across a society and imbued into our power structures and societal narratives. For example, confirmation bias and it's tendency to re-enforce opinions when presented with evidence leads to the disagreement that many have around some of the foremost issues of our time.

In this episode, I wanted to give a practical overview of significant biases we all posses and how to control/rise above them to see the world objectively.

I dive into a few types of bias that are very influential in our inner perceptions as well as our society

- Confirmation bias

- Self-serving bias

- Ingroup bias

- Anchoring/First impression bias.

I discuss how these biases work and give illuminating examples of how they could impact a conversation around an important topic. It was a fun episode with many nuggets of information!

28. Using fear as a compass towards your fullest potential

28. Using fear as a compass towards your fullest potential

Fear. Most say that this emotion is the opposite of love. It's one of the central causes to racism, hate, war, and dehumanization.

But what if I told you that instead, it's the flame that keeps your striving to become greater?

It all depends on what you're scared of. Are you scared failure? Or are you scared of not reaching your full potential?

In my newest episode, I talk about a few examples of how James Altucher leans into the fear of being comfortable to reach new heights. I give a few key steps to take when confronted with fear:

- Confront and accept the fear. Don't run away from it.
- After confronting the fear, ask WHY to uncover hidden excuses.
- Nullify these excuses by asking yourself what you're missing out on if you let fear stop you.

After going through these three steps, you'll most likely realize that your excuses were an illusion, and you're more scared of missing out on opportunity.

What are some stories of how you've dealt with fear?

26. How to use failure as rocket fuel for your success

26. How to use failure as rocket fuel for your success

You just failed.

Now what? How do you react? What are some methods you can use to learn from the experience?

In this episode, I'm going to tie together some stories of people who learned from failure to launch themselves to success. I'm going to break down the factors at work, and how we all can use the valuable lessons we get from failure in order to blast off to a whole other level.

I'll also discuss my own failure as a co-founder of a startup, and how I try to implement the lessons I see in hindsight in my work now.

What were the actions I took that allowed me to build that template? What are some methods that allowed me to catch things that would otherwise fall through the cracks?

1. Acceptance. I didn't hate myself for failing. I actually was satisfied on what I managed to create in the circumstances.
2. Consistent reflection. Ask why you failed. Then ask why again a few days later. Then again after a few weeks. It takes a little while for some insights to percolate in your brain. Give it time and don't try to dump all at once.
3. Keep the artifacts. I still have all my design files from BuildingBlox. There are hundreds of screens, and a design system that I made from scratch! It serves as a good reminder that while the ultimate goal of building a successful company didn't come to fruition, the process was something to be cherished and kept for future reference.

While there's ways to learn from professional failure, learning from personal failure is more important.

One of my friends, Jason Lloye has reached self-described rock bottom. He failed in his personal life and failed in loving and caring for himself. Here's a clip of the conversation I've had with him:
So what can we learn from Jason?

There were a few main things for me.

1. Love yourself through whatever personal speed bumps you hit throughout life. That foundation of self-love sets the tone for continued progress and striving.
2. Be OK with rawness! With nuance undefined life circumstances! Sometimes people think they have control of everything, but that's far from the truth. A plan is good, but flexibility when the plan falls a part is even better.
3. Find what led to your rock bottom. Reminiscing can be very painful, but can lead to exponential growth when put into the context of learning.

24. Bites of Awareness - Productive and Fulfilling Social Media Use

24. Bites of Awareness - Productive and Fulfilling Social Media Use

How do you use social media as a tool to spread your message and positivity in stead of a time suck?

In this bite of awareness, I discuss some methods I use.

The key is to prevent mindless scrolling!

- Positive Engagement driven social media use. Use social media to learn new things, meet new people, and reconnect with old friends

- Cultivate your bubble mindfully. Every added friend or follow means a certain type of content. Will you learn something new from this content or will it simply reinforce your current worldview

- Value Driven Content. Shift your mindset from "how can I benefit from posting?" to "how can others benefit from my posts?

- Scheduled social time: I'm always struggling with this - preventing social media from creeping into my productive time. Set aside time to truly engage with the people on your social media so you're not just mindlessly scrolling.

- Recently, I've started to ask myself when I pull out my phone or pop open a tab of social media - Why am I doing this? It really helps me to either be productive on social media or not use it.

How do you engage with social media? Do you do any of the things I discussed? What works and what doesn't work? Let me know :D

6. Knowing Your Food: The Industry

6. Knowing Your Food: The Industry

In this episode, I’ll be doing a deep dive into the food industry in America. How did it get to where it is now? What forces shaped the industry? What effects is it having on our society, environment, and economy? All of these questions will be answered. I describe how the post WWII military industry machine absorbed the food production industry. I talk about how policy changes in the 1970’s shifted our system towards producing huge surpluses of crops through mechanization and monocropping, and how subsides enable the reliance the food industry has on fossil fuels to function. I then talk about the hidden costs of our food, and how the industry has made a fortune by exploiting the misaligned incentive structures shaped by market forces. This exploitation has caused a lot of disease, economic backlash from the healthcare sector, and a collective disconnection from our food as a society. I reveal some shocking statistics that illustrate the negative effects of these occurences.

Patience’s Book

Patience on LinkedIN

In this episode, the second and final one of this mental health series (expect more on the topic), Asu Student, Entrepreneur, and Author Patience Dorman and I have a candid discussion about the inner workings of mental health issues. We talk about the hidden, deceptive nature of mental health issues and how people with them come in all shapes and sizes. We also discuss the significant role of vulnerability in creating positive momentum and personal strength. Patience is very self-aware about her own struggles and has a lot of wisdom for people who may be dealing with similar issues.

4. Mental Health in Society FT Colton Lish

4. Mental Health in Society FT Colton Lish

On this episode, my guest Colton Lish and I discuss mental health in the social context of America. We discuss how the education system and how the focus on learning numbers and stats as opposed to social awareness might be a factor in the 44 million adults with mental health issues. We discuss the very significant links between mental health and gun violence, and how different cultures treat mental illness. We also discuss ways you can help our society be friendlier to people struggling with their mental health. Even though we discuss serious issues, there’s a lot of lighthearted fun in this episode as well, with discussion of Ted Cruz as the posterboy for America’s institutional inability to educate people on how to become adept social beings. It was an insightful and entertaining conversation with a deep thinker and really intelligent person in Colton.
