Episode 21 - The South Fork Dam Failure!
Welcome back! This week we are discussing the South Fork Dam Failure and subsequent flooding of Johnstown, Pennsylvania. At the time of this disaster, it was the deadliest with over 2,000 lives lost. Damage in some areas was total with the only thing left being bedrock. This disaster spurred change and led to the creation of the American Red Cross, now one of the largest multi-national volunteer disaster response agencies in the world.

This week we discuss county Emergency Management agencies restructuring to combat future disasters and a series of tornadoes that swept through Iowa, leaving seven dead. Finally, in honor of National Women's Month, Destination Disaster wanted to dedicate the final portion of the episode to Avagene Moore. With her recent passing, we at Destination Disaster want to ensure her legacy is known and continues to live on. A trailblazer in her own right, Avagene helped advance the importance of Emergency Management and Homeland Security at both the state and Federal level. Current Events Episode 7
On this week of Current Events, we discuss the fluid situation evolving in Ukraine and in honor of Black History Month, we take a look at Lieutenant General Julius W. Episode 7: Racial Disparities in Disaster Response
This week, we take a look at a fundamental problem plaguing local, state, and federal emergency response agencies. For decades, minority communities have been forced to face the brunt of disaster impacts with little to no assistance from the agencies that all of us rely on for emergency assistance. This episode takes a look at the racial disparities that minorities and at-risk communities face on a daily basis. Disasters of the past and future will continue to affect minority communities far more than richer communities and will be expected to recover with little to no outside assistance.
