The 2023 Golden Gremmies: ADDENDUM

The 2023 Golden Gremmies: ADDENDUM

After recording the regularly-scheduled Gremmies, everything somehow got even worse. So, here we are, ruminating on the impending demise of the AAA game industry, and running down Embracer Group's many and varied subsidiaries while trying to determine if they will survive or not.

What, you think that's grim? Well, tough shit, that's reality, baby, and we're all living in it! We eat the pig and together we burn!

The 2023 Golden Gremmies

Now that the good is out of the way, it's time to talk about the worst that 2023 had to offer. And, oh boy, there was a LOT of shit.

The 2023 Golden Gizmos

The 2023 Golden Gizmos

It's that time again! Time for us to run down our Top Ten Games of da Year, including the recipients of the most Prestigious award in all of video games: the Golden Gizmo! After that, we run down the currently scheduled/hopeful titles of 2024 to find out what we're looking forward to.

NOTE: I kept referring to Case of the Golden Idol as "Curse" of the Golden Idol. In my defense, that SHOULD be the name of the game, and it's a mistake I've made ever since I played it. WHAT WERE THEY THINKING?!?! George also likes to call Bomb Rush Cyberfunk "Cyberpunk" so whatever, we all have our burdens.

Ending music: "Pseudo's Theme" from Clash: Artifacts of Chaos, composed by Patricio Meneses.

If you'd like to read our full reviews of the games mentioned here, I've linked them below, in no particular order:

The 2022 Golden Gizmos and Gremmies

The 2022 Golden Gizmos and Gremmies

We're back, with our lists of the TOP FIVE best games of 2022! If you still had this subscription in your RSS feeds or whatever, uhhh, sorry! But we had to deal with this depressing-ass year and a dearth of quality content, so now it's your problem too. This year, the Gizmos and Gremmies are released as one episode because, honestly, we had a lot of overlap in the Gizmos and there wasn't a whole lot else to talk about. There were some great games this year, though, and I got to join in George's Best Old Game category.

The Gremmies begin at 1:47:17, if you want to skip the spoilers for a certain game.

NOTE: This was recorded before Justin Roiland's recent Law Problems. Doesn't really change anything, I just wanted to point out that we're right to hate him.

The 2021 Golden Gremmies

Before we get to the Golden Gizmos next week, it's time to clear out the trash... The really rapey, gross trash... The Golden Gremmies are for the worst of the year, and oh boy, there was a lot of bad stuff in 2021! So sit back and... Enjoy? As we run down the Worst Games, Worst Developer, Worst Publisher, and Biggest Shitstorm of 2021.

12/9/2021 - 007 James Bond in: Thunderpoon

With no new games out this week, I've continued my retreat into 2015's Mad Max game, and I'm gonna talk about it! Because fuck you! We also talk about Spiders-Mans (George was wrong about its release date, BY THE WAY), Stars Wars, and other assorted bull crap. The Sega Saturn version of Symphony of the Night, that's another one. Uhhhhhhh, probably something else. It don't matter. In Retro Corner it's all Mario, all the time, with Super Mario Kart, Mario RPG, and Yoshi's Story! Yoshi's Story contains no Mario, actually, so I think it's kinda bullshit that it was included in what are SUPPOSED to be Mario games. Whatever. I am airing my grievances here because George actually reads these, for reasons I cannot begin to comprehend.

11/25/2021 - Punch Gun-Dec

11/25/2021 - Punch Gun-Dec

This week, we take a brief foray into the News, because we've unfortunately willed a Chrono Cross remake into this bitch of an Earth. Betty White, meanwhile, continues to live. Anyway, I give some brief thoughts on Call of Duty: Vanguard, we get a bit deeper into Shin Megami Tensei V, and then in Retro Corner, George talks about an all-time classic: VICE: Project DOOM for the NES. Then he also talked about Sonic the Hedgehog: Pocket Adventure, for the Neo-Geo Pocket Color. That shouldn't surprise anybody.

11/18/2021 - All You Had To Do Was Make A Damn Port, CJ!

God, it's been a long week. Last time we recorded, the freakin Grand Theft Auto Definitive Trilogy wasn't out yet. What a mess. But you know what else is out, and... Mostly not a mess? Shin Megami Tensei V! It's finally here! Then in Retro Corner, George briefly talks about Revenge of Shinobi and Shinobi 3, but instead we mostly sort out the release timeline of the Shinobi series. It's a mess.

11/11/2021 - Jizz Jizz Bizarre Adventure

This week, we're basically both waiting for Shin Megami Tensei V to come out, but in the meantime, I've been playing Forza Horizon 5, and I finished The Forgotten City. George finished Metroid Dread and Far Cry 6, and in his Retro Corner, he's gonna take you back to the past: the years Chrono Trigger and Ocarina of Time came out, to be specific. Are these shitty games that suck ass? Y-- no? Well. Look, I have my own views on OoT... Chrono Trigger, though, that's a game. There's a frogman in it!

11/4/2021 - Union Busting Makes Me Feel Good

We're back from a week off, with the return of the NEWS SEGMENT, apparently! I was not consulted on this, but here it is! Is it simply filling time because George did not plan a Retro Corner? Possibly! But at least I played some games, like Guardians of the Galaxy and Marvel's The Forgotten City. George also manages to squeeze out a Retro Corner, about Sunset Riders and Wild Guns, which we've possibly talked about before, but neither of us can remember because we're old men with brain damage.

10/21/2021 - Samus Aran is a Genetic Freak, and She's Not Normal

Once again, video games are BACK, and I'm here to tell you about The Good Life, Back 4 Blood (again), and Metroid: Dread! George instead wants to talk about Nintendo's garbage online pass or whatever, so I humor him. Then we have a little bit more about Far Cry 6, before it's on to RETRO CORNER: MORE TROIDS! All the Troids are here! Well... Metroid 1, Super Metroid, Zero Mission, and Fusion, actually, that's not all of them. But it's a good chunk! It's the ones that matter.

10/14/2021 - Starring John Carlo Espadido

Video games are BACK!!! We're here to talk about Far Cry 6 and Metroid Dread, though it's mostly Far Cry. I also relay some information about the current state of Switch emulation, which is completely unrelated, by the way. Totally. We also have a quick aside on the 2021 film Malignant, which everyone should watch, and in Retro Corner, it's Lunacy, for, you guessed it, the Sega Saturn! More Sega Saturn games! It's what everyone's been asking for! Well... Actually, one person did ask for this game specifically. Don't know what's wrong with his brain.

10/7/2021 - Gosh Darn These Vampires

This week, we head back into The Gabagool Zone to discuss the Sopranos prequel movie The Many Saints of Newark. Then, it's time for some spooOoOoky sitcoms as we talk about two episodes of Family Matters: Stevil and Stevil 2. Then, in Retro Corner, George played D for the Sega Saturn. What does the D stand for? The answer might surprise you! Eh, probably not, actually.

9/30/2021 - Slumdonk Millionaire

This week, we learn more about Predators, the Sega Saturn, Nintendo's various failings, bad remakes, ice hockey manga and anime, and George's difficulties in pronouncing Japanese titles. In Retro Corner, the subject is Ninja Gaiden 1-3. The NES ones.

Theme song by David Cassel

9/23/2021 - Tony Hawk's Hungarian Nimrod

9/23/2021 - Tony Hawk's Hungarian Nimrod

Not a lot going on this week, as I'm still plugging away at Deathloop, and George is still in his insane Sega Saturn phase, but I did watch Predator 2, so... There's that. There's also the promise of NINTENDO NEWS on the horizon, and we unravel the mystery of Goonies 2 for the NES. But that's not Retro Corner. Retro Corner is, in fact, about JACKAL for the NES, and WRATH OF THE BLACK MANTA, which is definitely a video game you can play. Technically. Thanks to @buffaloser on twitter for recommending this, even though George never told me to contact him about being on the show for this. Sorry, Dale.

9/16/2021 - Morbius Drinking A 40 In A Death-Basket

This week, I've played a liiiiittle bit of Deathloop (more on it next week) and I've also been deep in the 4 vs 1 mines, playing both Predator: Hunting Grounds and Dead By Daylight. God, I miss Evolve... Anyway, George watched The Phantom and played Albert Odyssey and Final Fantasy Tactics, which shouldn't be surprising to anybody. Also not surprising: more Star Track garbage.

9/9/2021 - Visitor M

This week, I talk about Psychonauts 2 and No More Heroes 3, and George is into some REAL psycho shit with regards to the Sega Saturn. Then, in Retro Corner, it's really more of a mental exercise to see how much two old men remember about Kingdom Hearts 2. You'd never guess this, but the answer is: not much!

We've reached the end of our journey, and we bid farewell to the DS9 crew by picking our top 5 favorite episodes. The results may surprise you!! Probably not though. Maybe. I don't know. None of the Lwaxana Troi episodes are in here, I can tell you that.

8/26/2021 - Indie Games in the Time of Chris-Chan

Oh boy. Strap in, folks, because I have to share the absolutely terrible insanity that is Twelve Minutes. Speaking of insanity, George is still on his Souls shit, trying to platinum Dark Souls 2, because he never learns. He's like the rat that keeps trying to eat the electrified cheese over and over. Probably best to just put him down. That's no kind of life. Anyway, in Retro Corner, he also wanted to talk about Final Fantasy 6 and 7. See my point?

8/19/2021 - Orpheus Drinkin a 40 in a Death Basket

After multiple attempts at recording that were thwarted by George's bad internet and other assorted tomfooleries, we had a successful session! Hooray! It was important that we get this episode to you, the loyal listener, so you can hear discussions about Dark Souls 2: Scholar of the First Sin and Hades, followed by a Retro Corner featuring X-Men arcade, The Simpsons arcade, and... After Burner II. Alright, whatever. I feel like his theming of Retro Corners has been pretty suspect as of late.

8/12/2021 - Divatox Stan Account

We all make poor decisions in life, some poorer than others, and this week we get to commiserate about our mistakes. For example, I watched Turbo: A Power Rangers Movie AND The Suicide Squad, neither of which was enjoyable. I also played the Back 4 Blood beta, which is... Fine. But of course George is also deep in the early 90s, in a non-Power Ranger-related fashion, because Retro Corner is about the Vectormans One and Two, plus Comix Zone. Anyway, I wish for death to take me.

8/5/2021 - SoBek Life Water

Heads up, this episode is frankensteined together from multiple recordings over a couple of days. George was having Computer Problems, so whaddya gonna do. But that's fine, because there wasn't a whole lot to talk about this week anyway. I played Atomicrops, and that's basically it, so most of this ep is a Retro Corner about Shin Megami Tensei 1, 2, and If..., so buckle in for that, I suppose.

That's right, it's time again. After some obligatory discussion about the Steam Deck and a bit about George's Yakuza: Like a Dragon experience, the rest of this episode is ALL STAR TRACK! Specifically, the subject at hand is Star Track IV: The Voyage Home, though, as you might expect, it kinda goes all over the place. No Retro Corner, because who freakin' needs it??? Old games SUCK!!!!!

7/15/2021 - You Can't Do That On Smash Bros

7/15/2021 - You Can't Do That On Smash Bros

This week, I vent about Mario Golf: Super Rush and its various fuckups, get deep into the mechanics of UFC 4, and then we bring back the most accursed segment... News... Because there's more Persona stuff happening, and also some weird shit with Judgment, and a Nickelodeon Smash Bros, which is what we spend most of the time talking about. Do you want to hear two millennials wax nostalgic about Ahhh! Real Monsters and Rocko's Modern Life? If you're still listening to this show I guess you do!

Anyway, in the middle of this episode George also decided to regale me with a tale of his encounter with an Entity and I don't know how the fuck I was supposed to respond to that, but he thought it seemed like a good idea. You know what also wasn't a good idea? Playing Strider and Journey from Darkness: Strider Returns (not to be confused with Strider 2 for the PS1), which are part of this week's Retro Corner. The other part is Hagane: The Final Conflict, a much better game, and another entry point into the second-most-accursed segment, How Much Does This Shit Cost On Ebay? Pretty soon George and I are going to end up killing each other.

7/8/2021 - THERAPIST: Wide Brendan Fraser Can't Hurt You

Of course, the big thing this week is the OLED Switch. For once, news broke early on a Tuesday morning so we could talk about it. Apart from that, George just wanted to talk about more ffffffffffffffffucking Star Track movies so I took the opportunity to talk about No Sudden Move, the newest film from Stevie Soddenburg. After that's all done, in Retro Corner we catch a case of Kong Madness, and talk about Donkey Kong Countries 1-3 AND Diddy Kong Racing. Now we have ALL teh bananas!!! Yes, yes, I know that doesn't make sense to anyone reading this because it's just a long-running joke between George and I. Do you think I care? We don't do this for the viewers, and yes I know they're not viewers. We do this for the love of the game.

6/24/2021 - I NEED THE DOUK!!!

6/24/2021 - I NEED THE DOUK!!!

I am now freed from the Crafting of Wars all day every, and that's cool, but George has finally gotten his hands on Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart as well! And then... More Star Track. But THEN, we get to a topic that's been continually postponed for a couple of months: the 1988 classic Midnight Run, starring Robert De Niro and the late Charles Grodin. We also take a detour into Oingo Boingo's discography, but that's just a normal thing for this podcast.

In Retro Corner, George burns through a lot of games: Wave Race 64, Michael Jackson's Moonwalker (Genesis), and Shock Troopers 1 & 2, to be specific. Do these games have anything in common? Not really!

LIVE, From The Electronic Three 2021: Our Deaths!

Well, E3 happened. Or maybe it didn't, depending on who you ask... It's me, I'm the one who would say it didn't happen. E3 2021 isn't real. Can you look at that shitshow and really tell me that was an EXPO? Gimme a freakin' break...

Anyway, new Metroid. So that's something, I guess. In Retro Corner George talks about, uhhhh... Aliens Vs Predator? No. No, it wasn't that, it was something that SUCKED, just like E3 SUCKED!!!! Oh right, Robocop Vs Terminator and Battletoads & Double Dragon: The Ultimate Team. What a fucking mess. Here's to next year. Maybe some video games will come out in 2022.

6/10/2021 - #ReleaseTheMortonJankelCut

6/10/2021 - #ReleaseTheMortonJankelCut

With no new games coming out this week, we turn to our old standbys: the Mario Movie and Star Track! That's right, we both watched the newly-available, restored "Morton/Jankel Cut" of Super Mario Bros (1993), and give our thoughts on this extended version. Then, because of his poor life decisions and even worse propensity for gambling, George relays his experience of watching the first season of Star Track: The Next Generation. This is gonna shock you, but it's bad! After that, we have our regularly-scheduled Retro Corner, about Pilotwings 64. Fun!

NOTE: After recording this episode, the @smbarchive Twitter account replied to me, clarifying that the music and sound effects from the game were NOT intended by the film's creators, and apparently the editor just went ahead and put those in despite the Archive Overlord's wishes... Weird stuff. Dissent in the ranks.

6/3/2021 - He Look Like A Dang Biomutant

**THE THOUGHTS AND OPINIONS OF GEORGE BRUNDLE DO NOT REFLECT MY OWN OR THIS PODCAST. HIS REMARKS ARE LEFT UNEDITED THIS TIME BECAUSE IT WOULD HAVE RENDERED MOST OF THE EPISODE INCOMPREHENSIBLE. LISTEN AT YOUR OWN RISK**

I played Biomutant for about 30 minutes, and this week I'm here to tell you that you shouldn't even play that much of it! Other than that, once George is finished saying slurs, he talks about Persona 5 Strikers, Shin Megami Tensei 3: Nocturne HD, and then in Retro Corner, Beyond Oasis! I don't remember what that is, so I'm going to assume it's a documentary about those wacky Gallagher boys. No, not the one that smashes watermelons with a hammer, the other ones. NO, not the one with the eyebrows who was in Sex, Lies, and Videotape!!! Ugh, fuck this

Theme song by David Cassel

Outro music: "Almost Ready" by Dinosaur Jr, from the album "Beyond"... Get it? Like Beyond Oasis. Look, I couldn't think of anything non-offensive that would fit this episode. I wasn't about to use that one Black Eyed Peas song, that's for damn sure. Not even the Simlish version.

5/27/2021 - All The Young Girls Love Valis

Yeah I'm reusing a joke from the previous episode, what the fuck are you gonna do about it? Go ahead and put me out of my misery, because I played the New Pokemon Snap, and I'm gonna tell you about it! George has been playing Persona 5 Strikers, and then he wanted to talk about this year's Electronic Three, a fake event that isn't really happening, as far as I'm concerned. We make predictions, some of which will be confirmed or busted the very day this episode goes up! Hooray!

In Retro Corner, George talks about the Valis series, at least the ones before it became a porno. I bet he probably played that one too and just won't admit it.

5/13/2021 - Shake, Shake, Señora

This week it's all about Returnal and Resident Evil: Village! Spoilers for up to House Beneviento are at the end of the episode, and we'll probably go full spoilers for everything next week. But in Retro Corner, George played a great game, Mischief Makers, for the N64! He also played The Lion King for the Sega Genesis, and that... I mean, there's nothing anyone can do about that. He's got a problem, and I really wish he'd seek professional help for it.

It's another week where we're neck-deep in gabagool, because George just finished season 3 of The Sopranos! So you've got that to look forward to! After that we talk about Pokemon games, which is far less fun. Pokemon Blue, Pokemon Puzzle League, and Pokemon Snap, to be specific. Two of them are pretty good! Come for the gabagool, stay for Pervert Oak.

This week, on a leaner, more focused show (hehehe, shyeah, right) the main topics of discussion are the new Mortal Kombat movie and the Star Fox Trilogy. You know, Star Fox, Star Fox 2, and Star Fox 64. There aren't any other Star Foxes. That's it, that's all 3 of them.

4/22/2021 - I Must Be Loyle To My Capo

NEWS! Things are HAPPENING! PS3 and Vita stores? NOT SHUTTING DOWN (yet)! We did it, by the way, this was entirely thanks to us. PSP store is still screwed, but hey, whaddya gonna do. There's also something about a Playstation Movie Pass, whatever that is, who cares, it don't matter. With neither of us playing anything new this week, we go back to that gabagool, as George has finished Season Deux of The Tony Soprano Show. He's almost into The Good Stuff!

Finally, in Retro Corner, George played both Persona 2 games, Innocent Sin and Eternal Punishment. Talk about freakin Eternal Punishment, that's me having to produce this podcast every week. Jeezus. A freakin albatross around my neck, this thing is...

4/15/2021 - Pussy Jr.

This week, we discuss the dire fate of Yuji Naka's last stand, Balan Wonderworld. Then, we've continued to play Oddworld: Soulstorm and Outriders, to varying levels of success. The Gabagool Summer continues, and in Retro Corner, George played Talespin (for the Genesis) and Shinji Mikami's Goof Troop (SNES).

4/8/2021 - Ys X: Monsterverse Nox

Topics this week include Godzilla Vs Kong, the obsolescence of movie theaters, more Evil Genius 2, Outriders (briefly), and of course, Oddworld: Soulstorm. In Retro Corner, George has completed a whole slew of Star War games, despite not even understanding how to play at least one of them. Quite an accomplishment.

4/1/2021 - Did I Eat My Drink? I Thought Milk Was Pink!

This week, I've been playing Genesis Noir and Evil Genius 2, while George has been playing Persona 2: Innocent Sin, though that's a subject for another time. Because this week is all about things that I, Larry Davis, enjoy. First up, it's gonna be a GABAGOOL SUMMAH, as George has finally decided to start watching The Sopranos. Then, in Retro Corner, he played two games I enjoy a lot, one of which is in my All Time Top 3: Demon's Crest and Um Jammer Lammy. This was a nice gesture after last week's interminable Sonic horseshit.

3/25/2021 - I'm A Grown Man And You're Making Me Angry About Sonic (with Dylan)

Hoo boy. This sure is An Episode, in many respects. That 3 hour runtime is justified, unlike some other interminable epics...

First, we have to contend with the force of nature that is The Snyder Cut. After that, I have a Retro Corner for Splinter Cell 1-3 (during which both other people on the podcast are almost entirely silent), and then it's the Main Event: a knock-down, drag-out confrontation over god damn Sonic Adventure 1 and 2. What a fucking nightmare. I regret everything about this episode. I hope you have a good time listening to it, so my suffering might not be for naught.

First off, the audio levels still aren't quite right. Trying to dial this back in. Everything was great until George nuked his goddamn computer like an idiot.

Anyway, this week we talk about Klute, podracing, WandaVision, and some sort of new Switch model, if you're the kinda freak who cares about that. This week's Retro Corner concerns Burning Force, a game that I have been assured is real, and Perfect Dark, which is a good game if you play it on a machine that doesn't run at single-digit framerates. George did not do that.

3/4/2021 - Hotel Yorda

3/4/2021 - Hotel Yorda

It's a JAM-PACKED, EXTRA-SIZED episode this week, because after the Usual Bull Shit (terrible-looking Pokemon games, Persona 5 Strikers, etc) we discuss Lupin III: The First, the new CGI moviefilm starring everyone's favorite gentlemen thief. Then, in Retro Corner, it's a double whammy, because George played Ico and Shadow of the Colossus. I love one of those games! Which one? Listen to find out, you dumb fucker!

Finally, because nobody demanded it, Comics Corner returns, discussing Black Hammer, Joker: Killer Smile, and Wonder Woman: Dead Earth. If you don't like it, don't listen to it! I don't give a Shit!

2/25/2021 - Butthole Doors & Art Bell

This week, we discuss Jim Ryan's GQ interview about the state of PlayStation, the demise of Daft Punk, last week's Nintendo Direct, and water levels. I hate them. Just the worst. If you're making a video game, and you think, "Hey, we should add a water level," here's some advice: fucking don't, you maniac. Stop it. You need to be stopped, by force if need be.

Then, in Retro Corner, it's Ristar.

2/18/2021 - Some Kind of Monstrum

2/18/2021 - Some Kind of Monstrum

Low-energy episode this week, as I'm snowed in, but hey, George finished Control! I started Ys IX: Monstrum Nox! There was some news on the horizon when this was recorded, so we attempted to predict what it would be. It was, uhhh... Depressingly accurate, it turns out. Then, in Retro Corner, George played some Mickey Mouse games for Children. Magical Quest, The Great Circus Mystery, and Mickey Mania, to be specific. You know, David Jaffe worked on Mickey Mania. That was before he went on to greener pastures, creating such beloved franchises as Twisted Metal, God of War, Calling All Cars, and Drawn to Death. I don't know what he's up to now. He doesn't return my calls.

2/11/2021 - What Straight-Edge Does to a MF

This week: I finished Resident Evil 7, plus (most of) its DLC. George is finally playing Control. I revisited Mortal Kombat 11. George also played the FORBIDDEN XBLA GoldenEye leak. We consider the legend of the Cum Punk. Then, in Retro Corner, George gives his thoughts on Mega Man Legends, and I have to confront him with some uncomfortable truths about Tiesel Bonne...

Friend Of The Show Dylan (@gruel_dylan on twitter) joins us for a special episode this week, because I finally played Resident Evil 7! There's also some horseshit about Hitman 3, The Medium, Far Cry 2, and, uhhh... About an hour of Gex Chat. This is the nation's hottest Gex Line. Hot geckos are waiting for YOU!

1/28/2021 - A World of Pure Assassination

A lot of news happened this week, in complete inverse of the usual routine. Xbox Live's price hike (and backtracking), Konami doing Thangs, Gamestop stock insanity, and more! We also talk about Donut County and... Sonic 2006... Before getting to the main topic of the week: Hitman 3! Spoiler alert: We like it a whole lot.
