Episode #77: Ashley Harwood // Founder of Move Over Extroverts // Being Unapologetically an Introvert

This week’s episode is really exciting and an expertise we didn’t even realize existed!

This week, we have Ashley Harwood on the pod.

Ashley Harwood is a fierce advocate for introvert entrepreneurs. She is passionate about empowering introverts to be as successful as they choose to be, while still enjoying their lives, every day. She is the creator of The Quiet Success Workshop, The Quiet Success Programs, and founder of The Quiet Success Retreat. Ashley teaches introvert entrepreneurs how their energy affects their bank account. She has taught hundreds of entrepreneurs throughout the country and loves showing business owners alternative ways to grow their businesses. When she is not spreading the Move Over Extroverts word around the world, she loves cooking, doing yoga, and swimming in the ocean.

Through her own experience as an introverted Realtor, Ashley discovered that much of what worked for others in her office did not work for her. The year she realized she was actually an introvert, her business quadrupled over the previous year, and her life dramatically improved. This is what led her to found Move Over Extroverts in 2019, to shorten the learning curve for other entrepreneurs and help them do business in a way that doesn’t burn them out.

Beck and Meg both identify as introverts, so this episode was right up our alley and we dive into all things about being an introvert vs. extrovert.

Episode #74: Dr. Jessica Moy // Female Embodiment + Making Space for Yourself and Your Feelings

WE’RE BACK FOR SEASON 3! In the words of Jonathan Van Ness, Can you believe?!

There’s no one better to be coming back with than one of our good podcast friends, Dr. Jessica Moy.

You know when you just instantly click with someone and feel comfortable / boosted by being around them? That’s Jess for us.

Jess has an awesome story (and one that many of us can relate to)! At the age of 25, she had gotten her doctorate degree in physical therapy. She was making good money, had gotten married, and was exactly where she had envisioned herself, but…things weren’t working. She found herself exhausted all the time. She wasn’t able to fully help people heal in the healthcare environment she was in and she found herself taking on everyone’s energy. She was working her “dream job” and while it felt really good helping people, she would leave feeling exhausted and terrified. She was already feeling burnt out, how was she going to last another 50 years here?

We won’t give away any spoilers, but Jess figured out a different path that is much more sustainable and inspiring for her in the long-term. We absolutely loved this conversation with her! If you’re in Boston, check out her classes at North End Yoga and EveryBodyFights and at the link below!

Episode #69: Caroline Rasmussen // Founder of Antara // Surviving Wall Street & Growing Your Brain

Episode #69: Caroline Rasmussen // Founder of Antara // Surviving Wall Street & Growing Your Brain

Founder Caroline Rasmussen's journey to creating Antara is truly inspiring; after her father's heartbreaking diagnosis of early-onset dementia and Parkinson’s, she was moved to quit her toxic Wall Street job and revisit her journey. After relying for years on cigarettes, coffee, and other crutches to get through a cloud of anxiety and fatigue, Caroline set out to do everything she could to maintain her brain and cognitive function for the long term. This lead to her training in herbal medicine and meditation, and she later began to delve into the science of neurological health and degeneration.

Through this research, she learned about the damaging effects of inflammation and stress on the brain - it turns out her burnout had not only been emotionally unpleasant, but had been actively undermining her brain function. Caroline sought out clinicians and experts in neuroscience and epigenetics to find out how to reverse the damage. This journey ultimately lead to the launch of
Antara: products that marry both Western and Eastern philosophies in order to support brain health in a truly holistic and effective way. The formulas use centuries-old plant medicines known to enhance the health of the mind, and then amplify their effects with modern bioavailability technology.

Along with this week’s amazing episode, we have a discount code so that you can check out the Antara products yourself! Use code DCXANTARA for 15% your purchase!

We’ll also be giving away a few of our favorite Antara products this week, so stay tuned for that on our Instagram feed!

Episode #66: Katie Demo // Co-Founder of Brass Clothing // Building a Sustainable Fashion Brand

Brass Clothing is one of our favorite Boston-based clothing brands and today we have Katie Demo on the podcast!

Brass Clothing was founded 3.5 years ago, when Katie and her co-founder Jay Adams were frustrated with their wardrobes. Years of shopping sales and fast fashion left them with closets full of clothes that never fit quite right or felt like good quality.

They knew they needed better options, and they set out to provide women with higher quality clothing with a more reasonable price tag.

They didn’t know it at the time, but they would spend the next 3.5 years talking to women about their wardrobes and the impact they have on our lives.

In this episode we talk about…

-Working a full time job while also nurturing your side hustle;

-Building trust in your team to manage the business and take steps back;

-Sustainability and the difference between Brass and fast fashion brands;

-The ups and downs of entrepreneurship.

We know you’ll love this episode just as much as we do. We’d love to continue the conversation with you on our secret Facebook page, so head to www.detoxandchillpodcast.com/join to join us!

Episode #57: Erin Claire Jones // Human Design Guide & Leadership Coach // Human Design: 101

Episode #57: Erin Claire Jones // Human Design Guide & Leadership Coach // Human Design: 101

This week we dove into a new topic that we’re SO excited to share with you!

A little background…human design is basically the manual to YOU. Founded by media executive and art enthusiast, Ra Uru Hu, the ancient-meets-modern-science is a synthesis of spiritual studies including, but not limited to: astrology, the I Ching, the Chakras, and the Kabbalah. Hu first found the system in 1987 in the heart of Ibiza, but it is studied worldwide today (thank you Erin and Forbes article for this background!).

Human design gives us insight into how we are all uniquely wired, and there are four types - generators (70% of the population), projectors (20% of the population), manifestors (9% of the population) and reflectors (1% of the population). Look up your human design HERE!

We dive into so many topics in this episode, but we cover…

-Background on human design and how it affects how we show up in the world;

-Why it’s something that companies should look into when building their teams;

-How to understand and work with others who have different designs than we do;

-Our personal human designs (strengths and weaknesses);

-How our human designs work together on the podcast!

Find Erin on Instagram HERE and her website HERE.

We are so proud and excited about this episode and are so excited to hear what you think - let’s start normalizing these conversations together. Hi Friends!

We’re really excited for this week’s episode because we cover some topics that have been on our minds for a long time!

This week with have the amazing Candice Peak on the podcast! Each and every one of our guests manages to do it all, and Candice is no exception. With a full-time corporate job and career in fitness teaching at both the Handle Bar and Barry’s Bootcamp, she is basically a super woman.

We chatted all things fitness and sustainability with Candice and covered things like…

- How she transitioned from being a college athlete to a full-time job,

- What sparked her interest in group fitness and teaching,

- How she winds down (or at least tries to take some time for herself during the week),

- Social media and how it isn’t necessarily the most energy-giving option,

- ALL things sustainability like what clothing brands are good options and what small changes you can make that have a big impact on the environment. We’ve been wanting to dive into this topic for a long time and were so excited to pick her brain!

Episode #55: Emily & Caleb // Co-Owners of Cambridge Naturals // Taking Over a Family Business & Maintaining a Legacy Brand

We are back with an episode we’ve been so excited to record for SO long!

Cambridge Naturals was founded in 1974 by Michael Kanter and Elizabeth Stagl (then 24 years old). Their mission is to provide the best choices in natural wellness products (nutritional supplements, clean body care, organic foods, and healthy lifestyle supplies) and offer an amazing customer experience to the local community. They are committed to sourcing products locally, organically, and ethically via fair trade and direct trade channels, and to donating a portion of our profits to social and environmental organizations that impact our community. As part of their vision for a more just, equitable and sustainable world, they strive to partner with businesses owned by women and under-served individuals. They offer a curated selection of wonderful products (we are obsessed with so many of the brands that they carry)!

Chatting with Emily and Caleb about taking the reigns with Cambridge Naturals and managing day-in and day-out operations was absolutely enlightening. These two have so much passion behind what they are doing and are so energetic and engaging. We talk about

- How they met and decided to move back to Boston to take on roles at Cambridge Naturals

-What it was like taking the reigns in the stores

-How they balance work life / family life when working with their significant others

-Their vision for the future of CN’s and what’s coming up soon for them

We know you guys will absolutely LOVE this episode!

Episode #54: Billy Bosch // Founder of Iconic Protein // The Importance of Protein & How He Raised $8 Million in Capital

Hi beautiful friends and welcome back to the podcast this week!

This week we have an amazing founder and brand back on the podcast - Billy Bosch of Iconic Protein.

Billy learned first hand that food can be both the problem and solution to better health and vitality. He has a great story as he created Iconic Protein when discovering that all the protein brands on the market were filled with sugar and preservatives, which were harming him and impacting his performance and daily functions. He was determined to lean into health and create a better beverage in a category that was filled with unhealthy options. Billy is highly proficient in discussing how protein impacts our health, particularly dairy vs. plant protein and how protein deficiency should not be taken lightly.

Billy took Iconic Protein from a small startup to raising $8M in funding over the course of a few short years. He shares some AMAZING advice for aspiring entrepreneurs in this episode and also gets into the nitty gritty of his failures along the way.

We also talk a lot about the company structure and what his hiring process has been like…it’s absolutely fascinating.

Find Iconic protein HERE and their Instagram HERE and use code 'DetoxChill15' for 15% off your order!

Seriously, can’t wait for you guys to hear this one and what our reading told us about the podcast moving forward (spoiler alert - we’re super inspired!)

Episode #52: Live Event ft. Tara Foley // Founder & CEO of Follain // Saying Goodbye to Toxicity

Episode #52: Live Event ft. Tara Foley // Founder & CEO of Follain // Saying Goodbye to Toxicity

To everyone who was able to stop by our event at the Follain storefront in Beacon Hill, THANK YOU! For anyone who didn’t make it…good news! We have the live recording here for you to listen.

Tara is someone who we look up to SO much as we build this podcast and make decisions for growth. If you listened to the first episode featuring Tara, we covered some new and different topics in this one. We talked about…

->You gotta do the work and make the connections. Set up coffee meetings to learn more what other people do.

->It’s OK as an entrepreneur to have a safety net (a job that pays the bills, etc.) taking CALCULATED risks is what pays off big time.

-> Fundraising is getting BETTER (slowly) for women. Tara had to answer a lot of questions about having kids when she was raising money for @follain...which def wouldn’t have happened if she was a dude.

-> Follain’s own line is amazing and expanding! We loveeee the essential oils for our diffuser.

-> It’s our responsibility to figure out how to distill wellness to other non-coast areas, everyone deserves access to this information!

-> Her non-negotiable products…like the Follain hand soap that she brings with her everywhere! This was honestly a lightbulb moment…a lot of the products available to us at work aren’t clean or nontoxic.

We also had some INCREDIBLE questions, so stay tuned to hear those and Tara’s answers!

We hope you enjoyed and would love to hear what you thought.

Episode #51: SOLO Episode // Taking Credit For and Owning Your Successes + Learning How to Say No

Episode #51: SOLO Episode // Taking Credit For and Owning Your Successes + Learning How to Say No

This week we’re back with a SOLO episode about a topic that’s been on our minds a lot lately -- taking credit for, and owning successes.

We cannot believe we’ve released 50 EPISODES, and we’ll be honest…it was a little bit uncomfortable to shout it from the rooftops and give ourselves a pat on the back. That’s what inspired this episode!

For anyone out there who’s side-hustling, working and pursuing their passions, or just making it through their day, here’s your permission to celebrate it and share your successes with others. We don’t do this nearly enough (especially as women!) and it’s SO important.

With all of that being said, we’re so excited to share some next steps that are happening with the podcast. We have a third member joining our team! Steph (who initially introduced Beck and I) will be joining the D&C squad and helping us bring on more aligned brands and grow even more. We seriously couldn’t be more excited for what’s to come. We have a feeling it will be bigger and better things

We are so proud and excited about this episode and are so excited to hear what you think - let’s start normalizing these conversations together. We’d love to continue this conversation in our Facebook group and on Instagram. Our Facebook group is a safe space for anyone who joins, so don’t forget to check us out there. Click here to join! As always, don’t forget to follow along with us on Instagram (@detoxandchillpodcast) and join our Facebook group. We love you!

Episode #50: Jamie & Michael // Founders of Busy Beauty // Struggles and Successes as Entrepreneurs

Episode #50: Jamie & Michael // Founders of Busy Beauty // Struggles and Successes as Entrepreneurs

OMG, it’s EPISODE #50!!!! How crazy is that??

Today we have the founders of BusyBeauty on the pod — Jamie Steenbakkers & Michael Leahy. Alison (their marketing manager) also tagged along which made this recording a record for how many people participated!

BusyBeauty is a wonderful brand for women on the go (which makes so much sense for our listeners!). After meeting in college, Jamie and Michael set out to solve the problem of long and involved beauty routines (and also shaving your legs in a dorm room). They created a waterless shave gel first and have since expanded their line to include wipes and showerless shampoo. Jamie is a beauty protege — the next generation inventor, the eye for design, the creator and the visionary. While Michael is a hustler — an expert at supply chain optimization, growth hacker, people, and cash flow manager.

The team is based locally in Boston, and we get into some great topics like how to manage your finances starting out as an entrepreneur, their biggest struggles, and their biggest successes.

Find BusyBeauty HERE and on Instagram HERE.

Seriously, can’t wait for you guys to hear this one and what our reading told us about the podcast moving forward (spoiler alert - we’re super inspired!)

Let’s get into today’s episode!

To say that Emily and Kwame are changing the world would be an understatement. Our guest this week, Emily Cunningham, is the Co-Founder and Chief Operating Officer of True Moringa, and shares her story of bringing the benefits of “the miracle tree” to the U.S.

In 2011, Emily’s co-founder Kwami had his sights set on becoming a rocket scientist. Emily was in the midst of her third year of studying development economics at Harvard, frustrated by the disconnect between the academic literature and the realities of poverty on the ground.

Coming from different worlds and backgrounds, they traveled to northern Ghana together with MIT’s D-Lab. There, they were united by a desire to take on the challenges smallholder farmers face daily without access to patient capital, quality inputs, technical training, or guaranteed markets.

ENTER THE MORINGA TREE.

During their time in Ghana, Kwami and Emily were introduced to what was known locally as “the miracle tree.” The tree thrives in arid climates. It helps the crops around it grown better. It can be intercropped with subsistence crops mitigating risk to farmers.

The leaves, with more vitamin A than carrots, more protein than eggs, more calcium than milk and more iron than spinach have the potential to end malnutrition and provide a stable food source to farmers.

The oil seeds, rich in anti-oxidants and moisturizing agents produce one of nature’s finest cosmetic oils for hair and skin care.

The solution to poverty, malnutrition, and hunger was growing in their own backyards.

INTRODUCING TRUE MORINGA.

The more they learned about the harmful chemicals in synthetic cosmetics and hair relaxers, the more passionate they became about bringing conscious consumers a natural alternative that actually worked. Putting their engineering and business acumen to work, they went back to Cambridge to devise a proprietary extraction system that could be brought closer to the farmers, adding value and jobs on the ground, and producing the highest quality natural oil nature has to offer.

Today, they serve over 5,000 small farming families, they have planted over 2 million trees, and they have increased the farmer incomes by 10x.

Can you say power duo?!

Check out True Moringa here!!

We hope you enjoy this episode!! Let us know what you think by leaving a review on iTunes, Stitcher, or whever you listen to your favorite podcasts.

WE LOVE YOU!

Episode #45: Kelli Tennant // Founder of The Platform // Choosing Yourself

This week we have an absolutely AMAZING guest on the podcast. Kelli Tennant is a former TV host for the Lakers and Dodgers. Kelli recently launched her OWN podcast, The Platform Podcast, to have critical conversations that dive deep into the harsh realities of chronic illness, the inspiring stories of entrepreneurs and the powerful women supporting women movement.

In 2007, Kelli was diagnosed with multiple autoimmune disorders, which led her to the discovery of a non-toxic, holistic lifestyle. As her own advocate for over 10 years battling countless illnesses, she has become one of the leading voices in the health and wellness community, educating women on the latest healing modalities, ways to clean up their daily routine, and how to support and empower other women.

We dive deep in this episode and chat about…

-Managing a chronic illness while working full time,

-Letting go of the “people pleasing” mindset and doing what is best for YOU,

-Being a woman in a primarily male-dominated field,

-How time off of work shaped her mindset,

-How we can best support other women in our fields.

We’ll both definitely be listening to this one back – it was that good.

Episode #44: Suzie Welsh // Founder & CEO of BINTO // The Importance of Better Healthcare for Women

Episode #44: Suzie Welsh // Founder & CEO of BINTO // The Importance of Better Healthcare for Women

Hi friends! We’re back at it again this week with an amazing female founder for Women’s History month, Suzie Welsh!

Suzie is a BEAST at everything she does. She holds a BSN from the University of Virginia and a Master’s Degree in Nursing for health leadership from the University of Pennsylvania. Suzie is also an adjunct professor at Villanova University's School of Nursing, and a 200 hour certified yoga instructor. We mean…COME ON!

BINTO is the culmination of Suzie’s lifelong commitment to women’s health. Working in an IVF clinic for several years, she’s seen the fertility journey for what it can be: long, frustrating, overwhelming, expensive. She’s also seen her patients bloom with renewed purpose. When you’re on that journey, it’s hard to know where to turn or whom you can trust.

Suzie believes that there’s no magical formula for getting pregnant. There’s no pill you can swallow that’ll give you a guarantee. But you can get your body as healthy as possible, and be ready if and when you get pregnant. Suzie can help you with that—and that’s why she started BINTO (which, fun fact, stands for bun in the oven!).

What inspires Suzie is that there’s hope for women and couples on this journey. Each month, BINTO sends you a box filled with everything you need. The care they put into picking these products with their team of experts is absolutely next level.

We’re so excite to share this brand with you! Find BINTO here and follow them on Instagram here.

Episode #43: Alfred & Cam // Founders of VitalFit Nutrition // Fighting Inflammation with Tart Cherry & The Grind of Entrepreneurship

Episode #43: Alfred & Cam // Founders of VitalFit Nutrition // Fighting Inflammation with Tart Cherry & The Grind of Entrepreneurship

This week, we have an amazing powerhouse duo on the pod - Cameron and Alfred of VitalFit.

Cameron and Alfred started VitalFit as a part of their grad school thesis project at Babson. What was a gripe with commissioned sales clerks, flashy marketing, and lack of industry accountability turned into their full-time venture. It was ultimately a back injury from playing basketball that actually led us to their first product.

Sick of taking ibuprofen and having no luck finding a natural alternative they felt like something was missing. Eventually, they came across tart cherry juice, which was surprisingly effective and began working on the way to best deliver its effects and apply it to the health and wellness space.

At the same time, they noticed a gap between performance and lifestyle products. There were tons of products for athletes and tons more for general wellness, but few that were meeting in the middle for a fitness-conscious, working professional. All of these events contributed to Alfred and Cameron moving forward with VitalFit.

Our conversation was fascinating and we are so excited to share it with you as well. Find VitalFit here, and follow them on Instagram here.
