#110 Jimmy Carr - Grief, Cancellation and Religion

#110 Jimmy Carr - Grief, Cancellation and Religion

Jimmy Carr is an world-touring comedian, writer, author, TV host for shows including, ‘8 Out Of 10 Cats’, ‘Roast Battle’, and ‘Big Fat Quiz Of The Year’. He is a hero of mine.
For this episode, headed from Glasgow to London to have a conversation with the deepest thinker, hardest worker, and kindest soul in comedy.
Beyond the dark mask you've seen on stage and on TV, Jimmy's origin story is complex, and his thinking is philosophical. I was blown away by how he has turned his remarkable life story into a set of lessons for us all to take onward.
Despite how he presents himself, Jimmy’s story is one that begins as a working-class Irish immigrant in Slough and will inevitably end with him being cemented as a legend when his physical being is no longer around.
But, the path there has not always been as straightforward as it seems.
Jimmy shares with me the intimate details of grieving his mother, facing the wrath of public cancellation, and wrestling with dyslexia.
He also astounded me with novel ideas around comedy’s role in society, how to serve your future self, and the importance of experiential learning.
Filmed in the very basement where I first fell in love with stand-up, this episode is a full-circle moment. And with stunning cinematography by the talented Andres, it's a visual feast.
My sister and I used to watch Jimmy in our miserable tiny house in a council estate in Ayrshire, and now I had the opportunity to bring her to meet her hero too.
Jimmy was my gateway drug to comedy. And, as Jimmy professes, comedians are drug dealers.
But, the drug prescribed by Jimmy in this episode isn’t one of laughter (despite there being plenty) but a drug that allows you to become the future you, today.

#103 Rob Henderson - Care Crisis: Parenting and the Dark Side of Foster Homes

Rob Henderson is an Author, Cambridge PhD recipient, Yale Graduate, a US Air Force Veteran and a popular writer on Substack.

Going to school is far less important than having a parent who cares enough to make sure you get to class every day. 60% of boys in foster care are later incarcerated, while only 3 percent graduate from college. Children raised in a wealthy but unstable home are more likely to engage in harmful adult behaviors than a child raised in a low-income home yet stable home.

How a child raised in a wealthy but unstable home is more likely to engage in harmful adult behaviors than a child raised in a low-income home yet stable home

These are harrowing facts that Rob has devoted his lift to researching.

In this emotive episode, Rob unveils the stark realities of growing up in a system that often fails its most vulnerable members - the care system.

Rob Henderson's remarkable journey from foster care to elite academia is a testament to his resilience and determination.

From his turbulent childhood in foster homes to his academic achievements at elite universities, Henderson sheds light on the challenges faced by foster children, highlighting the staggering statistics that reveal the harsh realities of their outcomes. Through personal anecdotes and insightful analysis, he delves into the concept of "luxury beliefs" embraced by the upper class, exploring how these ideologies can perpetuate inequality and harm the very individuals they aim to uplift.

As Rob reflects on his own experiences and those of his peers who fell victim to the cycle of incarceration and despair, he challenges societal norms and redefines the meaning of success. With raw honesty and unwavering determination, he underscores the importance of stability and parental support in shaping one's future, emphasizing that true prosperity goes beyond external accolades.

This is a podcast episode close to my heart and I am so proud to be part of a choir of voices bringing this to light.

Scott Britton is the founder of Battle Cancer, a Nike sponsored trainer and Crossfit athlete.

Scott has raised over $4m for Cancer with his international Crossfit events and has partnered with Nike, Whoop, Nocco and more. He’s even featured on the cover of Men’s Health.

But, this is not where it started.

Born and raised in an abusive poverty ridden household, Scott began his life between Glasgow and Salford. He recognised that he needed to improve his chances of a better quality life so joined the police force after studying.

He worked his way to senior detective roles often working covert and anonymously on some of the UK’s most heinous crimes including child sexual offences.

In 2017, in a pursuit to appease his itch for fitness, common good and entrepreneurialism he founded Battle Cancer with the goal of creating a community that uses fitness to support cancer survivors, patients, and their families.

Battle Cancer is an organization that harnesses the power of fitness to support those affected by cancer.

The organization has since grown into a global movement that hosts events and fundraisers across the world, all with the aim of raising awareness and funds for cancer research and support. Battle Cancer now partners with NIKE, Whoop and Nocco all because of Scott’s tenacity.

Scott is now a sought-after speaker and educator, known for his infectious enthusiasm and unwavering commitment to his cause. He has been featured in numerous publications and media outlets, including Men's Health, Women's Health, and the BBC.

Whether he's coaching clients one-on-one, organizing a Battle Cancer event, or speaking to a packed audience, Scott's mission remains the same: to inspire and empower individuals to take control of their health and their lives, and to show that with the right mindset, anything is possible.

#77 Steven Beattie - Overcoming Europe's Most Dangerous Prison for Young Offenders and Becoming a Doctor

#77 Steven Beattie - Overcoming Europe's Most Dangerous Prison for Young Offenders and Becoming a Doctor

This week my guest is Steven Beattie. A medicine student at University of Dundee and a Personal Trainer. This introduction might sound typical or “out of the box” but trust me it is not.

Steven’s story is the most unique, electric and traumatic I have ever heard on The Development by David Podcast

Born into deprivation and addiction, Steven's life has been full of challenges, including growing up in gang culture, caring for parents with serious illnesses, serving time in Europe's most dangerous prison, surviving multiple near-death experiences including multiple stabbings and a 70mph drunk crash. Despite these obstacles and experiences, Steven has been able to turn his life around, studying physiology at The University of Glasgow and now becoming a doctor. Steven has also trained for the marines, learned fluent spanish and became the fastest sprinter in Universities across Scotland.

This podcast is not just about one man's journey, but about the potential of all young people who are struggling to find their way. It's a message of hope and inspiration for anyone who has faced adversity and felt like giving up

In this podcast, Steven shares his journey for the first time. Steven's story is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and a source of inspiration for anyone looking to overcome obstacles and achieve their goals. He shares the important lesson that where you come from doesn't define where you can go, and that with determination and hard work, anything is possible.

I have and will never release a podcast like this.

Natalie Burrows is a Nutritional Therapist & Functional Medicine Health Coach. She is also the Founder of Integral Wellness

After a decade of working in a highly pressured corporate environment where the effects of poor nutrition, lack of sleep, high stress and an overreliance on sugar, caffeine and alcohol were very apparent Natalie embarked on a journey to help people through food.

As a nation, more and more medications are being prescribed – but no one is getting any better!

To add to that, we’re surrounded by dominating food industry and very confusing wellness industry. The need for convenience as we race from one day to the next has detached us from the connection between food, lifestyle and health.

This is why your gut and it's health matters.

Learn in this episode how your gut, how you treat it and what you put in it really effects how you think and feel!

#63 Paul Shields - A Therapist's Life of Sex, Drugs and Rock & Roll

#63 Paul Shields - A Therapist's Life of Sex, Drugs and Rock & Roll

This week my guest is Paul Shields. A Stanford student, therapist, podcast producer, podcast host and previously gigging rock and roll artist.  ** Explicit Language and Topics Used**

This podcast is an account of growing up in the roughest part of Glasgow. During the 80s and 90s Paul was surrounded by working class culture, violence, drugs, mental health struggles and poverty. We speak about about how that shaped Paul and how he pulled strength from these circumstances but also the counterbalancing effects it had on him him later in life. Learn how the fear from his Dad mustered aggression in him and how he became hyper normalised to violence through gang fights and scheme wars.

Paul discovered drugs, guitar and his creative side which let him to parking his academic career for a decade. He toured the country playing in the some of the most renown stages in the UK supporting some of the craziest bands. Paul uncovers the reality of being a touring musician but also how his earlier childhood dictated his persona in the band - a persona he had to unwind later in therapy.

Paul lost his dad at 21. Learn about the promise Paul made to his dad to continue playing and pursuing music and how this led him to gigging in the same same week as as his Dad's funeral.

Paul then struggled with a porn addiction that led to erectile dysfunction at an alarmingly young age. Paul sought help from a therapist who unlocked in him the power of self-help through the works of world renown therapist David Burns.

Paul has went on to study to become a therapist over a decade after initially joining university and has become a practitioner in Glasgow whilst running a successful podcast studio.

Thanks Paul for such a raw story!
